For a quick session, use Terraria’s Multiplayer → Host & Play. For a world that must remain available after the player who started it leaves, run the vanilla dedicated server on a computer or use a compatible hosted server. For modded play, use tModLoader and make every player match the server’s enabled mods, versions, and load order.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Terraria servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
This guide covers the PC-oriented setup choices in 2026. Direct home hosting commonly requires an operating-system firewall rule and router port forwarding for TCP port 7777. If forwarding is unavailable, a VPN-based connection or a rented server/VPS may be more practical. Terraria’s September 2026 update notes discuss continuing crossplay work and fixes around version 1.4.5.8, but they do not establish universal cross-platform compatibility, so verify the current platform and version support before inviting players from another device family.

Choose the hosting method that matches your session
There is no single “Terraria server” setup that suits every group. The important decision is whether the world is temporary or persistent, whether it is vanilla or modded, and who will maintain the computer, network, updates, and backups.
| Method | Best for | What happens when the host leaves? | Administration and network work | Mod support | Cost information available here |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Host & Play | A small group that plays while one person is in the game | The session depends on the host’s game session; it is not an independent always-on world. | Lowest setup effort. Friends can join through Steam or by IP, depending on the setup. | Use the tModLoader Host & Play path for modded games. | No provider price is established; it uses the host’s existing game installation and computer. |
| Vanilla dedicated server | A shared, unmodified world that should run independently of a player’s game session | The world can remain available while the server program and host computer continue running. | You choose the world, player limit, port, and password, then maintain firewall access, router forwarding when needed, updates, and backups. | Not the route for gameplay mods; use tModLoader instead. | No hardware or provider price is established by the available documentation. |
| tModLoader Host & Play or dedicated server | A group that wants gameplay mods | Host & Play ends with the host’s session; a dedicated tModLoader process can provide persistent availability. | More coordination: every player needs the same enabled mods, versions, and load order. Dedicated operation adds normal firewall and network administration. | Designed for tModLoader mods, subject to each mod’s compatibility. | No current provider price is established. |
| Rented game server or VPS | Players who want an always-on world or cannot manage home-router access | Usually independent of a player’s personal game session, subject to the provider’s service. | The provider handles some infrastructure, but you still need to check its Terraria version, mod support, access method, backups, and terms. | Only if the service explicitly supports the tModLoader version and mods you intend to use. | Current prices are not established here; compare providers separately rather than relying on an unverified figure. |
Pick Host & Play for a one-evening world
Host & Play is the fastest answer to “how do I host a Terraria server?” Open the multiplayer menu, choose Host & Play, select or create a world, and invite the people who are playing with you. The host’s Terraria session is the server in practical terms, so closing the game or ending the session removes the world from play. This is usually the right trade-off when everyone plays at the same time and nobody needs to enter the world while the host is away.

Pick a dedicated server for an independent vanilla world
A dedicated server is a separate server process rather than a multiplayer session inside the host’s normal game. It is the better fit for a group that wants a shared world to stay online while the owner is doing something else. The machine running the process must remain powered on and connected, and someone must administer the world and configuration.
Pick a hosted server or VPS when home networking is the obstacle
A rented game server or VPS moves the always-on process to a provider’s infrastructure. This can avoid configuring a home router, but it does not remove the need to verify compatibility. Before paying, confirm the current Terraria version, whether vanilla and tModLoader are supported separately, how you upload or back up worlds, who can access the console, and what happens during an update. The available material does not establish current provider prices, uptime figures, or a particular service to recommend.
Decide between vanilla Terraria and tModLoader first
Make this choice before installing anything. The standard Terraria dedicated-server program is the vanilla route. A modded world needs the tModLoader server path; launching a vanilla server and expecting it to load gameplay mods will not produce the same environment.

Vanilla path
Use the official Terraria server software associated with the current PC release. A Windows Terraria installation includes a dedicated-server executable, and an official server download path is also available. Use the current official download rather than copying an old version-specific walkthrough. During setup, the server prompts you for the world, player count, port, and password.
tModLoader path
Install the current tModLoader release and use its multiplayer or dedicated-server documentation. Every participant must run the same enabled mods and matching versions. The tModLoader multiplayer guidance also calls out matching load order, so a list with the same names is not enough if the order differs. A Workshop collection or a shared mod list can make coordination easier, but each player still needs to confirm that the installed versions and enabled state match the server.

- Install the current server software. Use the dedicated-server executable supplied with the current Windows Terraria installation or the official server download route. Keep the server files in a folder you can back up and administer. Do not mix files from an unrelated or older release.
- Start the server program. The initial setup asks which world to use or create, how many players it should allow, which port to listen on, and whether to require a password. Record the values you select; players will need the correct world and connection details.
- Keep the process and host computer running. A dedicated server is only available while its process is running and the machine is connected. Closing the console, shutting down the computer, or losing the network connection takes the world offline.
- Allow the server through the operating-system firewall. When the firewall presents a permission prompt, allow the server application on the network profile you actually use. If you denied the prompt earlier, create or edit the appropriate inbound rule in the firewall settings. The exact screens differ by operating system and security software.
- Use the documented default port unless you have a reason to change it. Terraria’s commonly documented default is TCP 7777. If you choose another port in the server configuration, the router rule and the port players use must match that choice.
- Forward the port on your router for internet players. Sign in to the router, create a port-forwarding rule for TCP 7777, and direct it to the local network address of the computer running the server. Reserve that computer’s local address if your router supports address reservation so the rule does not silently point to a different device later. Router menus vary by manufacturer, and not every ISP or network permits inbound forwarding.
- Give players the right address. People on the same local network may be able to connect using the host computer’s local address. Players outside the home network generally need the home connection’s public address and the configured port. Do not publish a private local address as if it were reachable from the internet.
- Test with one player before opening the invitation widely. Confirm that the server accepts a connection, that the password works, and that the expected world loads. Testing first makes it easier to tell whether a later failure is a network problem or a player-version problem.
What the setup prompts mean
- World: Select an existing world or create one. Treat the world file as valuable data and keep an independent copy before major changes.
- Player count: This is the server’s configured limit, not a promise that every computer or connection can handle any number of players. The reviewed material does not establish an official hardware, bandwidth, or player-count benchmark.
- Port: TCP 7777 is the documented default. A non-default port is valid only when the server, firewall, router, and players all use the same value.
- Password: A password prevents casual access to a publicly reachable world. Share it privately and change it if you believe it has been exposed.
How to host a modded Terraria server with tModLoader
Modded multiplayer fails most often because players are not running the same environment, not because the world file is damaged. Treat the server’s mod list as a configuration that every client must reproduce.
- Install the same tModLoader release family. Confirm the server and every client are on the version required by the mods. A Terraria game update does not automatically mean that every mod or tModLoader build is ready for it.
- Choose Host & Play or a dedicated tModLoader process. Host & Play is convenient for a group that starts and ends together. Use the dedicated-server documentation and utilities when the world must remain available without the owner actively playing.
- Create one authoritative mod list. Record every enabled mod and its version. A Workshop collection can distribute the list, but each player should compare the actual enabled set after installation.
- Match load order. The tModLoader multiplayer guidance emphasizes load-order matching. If the server and a client have the same mods in a different order, treat that as a mismatch and correct it before troubleshooting the network.
- Copy compatible configuration files carefully. Server utilities and sample server-configuration files can provide settings such as automatic forwarding or Steam-lobby behavior, but examples are version-specific and community-maintained. Check the current upstream documentation and sample files before adopting a setting.
- Start the server and test with a second, fully synchronized client. Have one player connect before everyone joins. If the first connection reports a missing or different mod, stop and synchronize the mod set rather than repeatedly changing router settings.
Share a mod list without creating a second source of truth
Choose one person to maintain the list and announce changes before applying them to the live world. When a mod is added, removed, or updated, have every player make the same change, verify the load order, and only then restart the server. Keep a backup of the world and configuration before the change so you can restore the previous state if a mod update causes a problem.
Network access: firewall, port forwarding, and alternatives
Why local play can work while internet play fails
A server can be running correctly and still be unreachable from outside the home. Local players use the host computer’s private network address; internet players must pass through the router and any upstream ISP restrictions. The server must be listening on the selected port, the operating-system firewall must permit it, and the router must forward that port to the correct computer.

Use TCP 7777 consistently
The documented default is TCP 7777, not an arbitrary “Terraria port” that can be forwarded without checking the server configuration. If you change the port, update the firewall rule, router forwarding rule, and the connection instructions together. A mismatch in any one of those places can look like a dead server.

The Terraria server guide describes VPN services as an alternative. Every player must install and use the VPN software, and the group then connects through the virtual network rather than exposing the home server directly. This is a different connection model, so follow the selected VPN’s current instructions and do not assume that a local address from one VPN is reachable through another.
A hosted game server or VPS is another option when you cannot control the router, the ISP blocks inbound connections, or you do not want a home computer running continuously. Check the provider’s current Terraria and tModLoader support before purchasing; no universal compatibility or current price can be inferred from the general category.

Version matching and crossplay in 2026
Keep server and clients on the same game version
Before troubleshooting anything else, write down the game version, server build, tModLoader version if applicable, and enabled mod versions. Update the server and clients as a coordinated change. A server that has moved to a newer release can reject an older client, while a client with a newer mod set can fail even when the base Terraria version appears correct.
Do not promise universal cross-platform joining
The official Terraria State of the Game update for September 2026 describes ongoing work on crossplay Phase One and remaining fixes related to version 1.4.5.8. That status does not establish that every PC, console, and mobile platform can join every server today. The dedicated-server procedure described here is PC-oriented and should not be presented as a universal console or mobile recipe.

If the announcement does not explicitly cover the combination, describe it as unverified rather than promising that it works.
Backups and routine administration
A persistent world needs an owner and a recovery plan. Keep copies of the world and server configuration before Terraria updates, tModLoader updates, mod changes, or major building sessions. The available documentation supports server configuration and utilities but does not establish a tested backup schedule, retention policy, or restore procedure, so choose a schedule appropriate to how much progress your group can afford to lose and test that your copies can actually be opened or restored.
Quick Recap
- Before an update: stop the server cleanly, copy the world and relevant configuration, then update one component at a time.
- After an update: start the server privately and check that the world loads before announcing the new version to everyone.
- Before a mod change: save a known-good mod list and load order alongside the world backup.
- During normal operation: monitor whether the server process is still running and keep the connection details and password restricted to the intended group.
Troubleshooting checklist
| Symptom | Most likely area to check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Players on the same home network can join, but outside players cannot. | Router forwarding, firewall, or ISP/network restrictions | Confirm the server is listening on TCP 7777 (or your chosen port), allow it through the host firewall, and verify that the router forwards to the correct local computer. If inbound access is unavailable, consider the VPN or hosted-server path. |
| No one can join, including local players. | Server process, address, port, or password | Check that the server is running, that players are using the configured port and correct address, and that the password has no typing error. |
| A player is refused after a Terraria update. | Version mismatch | Compare the exact game and server versions, then bring the server and all clients to a compatible release before changing network settings. |
| A tModLoader player sees missing or different mods. | Enabled set, versions, or load order | Compare the authoritative mod list, install the same versions, enable the same entries, and reproduce the server’s load order. |
| The world disappears when the host quits. | Session-based hosting choice | That is expected for Host & Play. Move the world to a dedicated vanilla or tModLoader server, or a compatible hosted service, if it must remain online independently. |
| A cross-platform player cannot connect. | Unconfirmed platform support | Check the latest official crossplay announcement for the exact platforms and versions. Do not assume that ongoing Phase One work means universal support. |
A practical decision path
- Playing together for a short session? Start with Host & Play.
- Need the world available while the owner is offline? Use a vanilla dedicated server for unmodded play, or a dedicated tModLoader server for modded play.
- Cannot configure the home router or keep a computer online? Investigate a VPN arrangement or a hosted server/VPS, checking current support and terms first.
- Using mods? Make tModLoader, the enabled mods, versions, and load order identical for every participant.
- Inviting another platform? Verify current, platform-specific support instead of relying on a blanket crossplay claim.
