For a short session, use Multiplayer → Host & Play. Your world is available while you remain in the game, and friends can join through Steam or by IP, depending on the setup. If the world must remain online after you leave, run Terraria’s dedicated server on a computer or choose a compatible hosted server.
Use the vanilla server for unmodded Terraria. Use the tModLoader server path for mods, with every player on the same enabled mod list, versions and load order. Direct home hosting usually requires an operating-system firewall rule and router forwarding for TCP port 7777. Terraria’s 2026 crossplay work is still changing, so verify current platform and version support before promising that console, mobile and PC players can join the same server.

Choose the right Terraria hosting method
The best method depends on whether the world needs to outlive the host’s game session, whether you are using mods, and whether you can configure the home network.

There is no substantiated official hardware minimum, player-count benchmark or bandwidth figure to quote for a universal server. Existing hardware may be sufficient, but actual capacity depends on the world, players, mods and host system.

Decide between vanilla and modded play first
Vanilla Terraria
Use the standard Terraria dedicated-server program or Host & Play. The dedicated server is the appropriate route when the world should run without a player keeping the game open.
tModLoader
Install and launch tModLoader rather than the standard Terraria server when the world uses gameplay mods. All players must have the same enabled mods and compatible versions. Matching the load order is also important; a different order can produce missing-content errors, world-load failures or divergent gameplay.
Decide this before creating the world. A vanilla world and a modded world are different operating paths, and changing the mod set later can affect world safety and player inventories.
Fastest option: Host & Play
Host & Play is designed for a session in which the host is actively playing. It is the lowest-effort answer to “How do I make a Terraria server?” when you do not need a persistent process.
- Start the correct game: Terraria for an unmodded session, or tModLoader for a modded session.
- Open Multiplayer and choose Host & Play.
- Select the character and world. Set a password when you do not want the session open to everyone who can discover it.
- Invite friends through the platform’s supported join flow. Depending on the setup, they may join through Steam or by entering the host’s address.
- Keep the host’s game session running while friends play. Save and exit deliberately rather than terminating the process, especially after building or changing the world.
Host & Play avoids the separate server installation and administration required by a dedicated process. Its limitation is availability: it is tied to the host’s active session, so it is not a good fit for a world people should visit while the host is offline.

Set up a vanilla dedicated server
1. Install the current server software
Use the current official Terraria server download or the dedicated-server executable included with a Windows Terraria installation. The exact files and prompts can change with game releases, so follow the instructions that accompany the current build instead of copying an old version-specific walkthrough.
During first-run configuration, select the world, maximum player count, port and password when prompted. Keep the world file and configuration in a location that is included in your backup plan.

Start the server and confirm that it reaches its listening or ready state. Join from the same computer or local network first. A local test separates a server-installation problem from an internet-routing problem.
3. Allow the process through the host firewall
Your operating system may block incoming connections even when the server is running. In Windows, use the Firewall and network protection controls to allow the Terraria server application, or create an inbound rule for its listening port. Select the network profiles you actually use and avoid opening unrelated applications.
4. Forward the default port on the router
The documented default is TCP 7777. In the router’s port-forwarding page, create a rule that sends external TCP port 7777 to port 7777 on the server computer’s local-network address. Router labels differ, so look for Port Forwarding, NAT, Virtual Server or a similar section.

Give the server computer a stable local address, such as a DHCP reservation, so the forwarding rule does not point to the wrong device after a reboot. Do not assume forwarding will work on every internet connection: carrier-grade NAT, restrictive ISP policies, double-NAT layouts and managed networks can prevent unsolicited inbound traffic.
5. Give players the correct address
Players outside your home network normally need the home network’s public address and the forwarded port. Players on the same LAN may use the server computer’s local address. Share the password separately and only with the people who should enter the world.
If local joining works but internet joining fails, check the firewall and router rule first. If the router has no usable public address or the ISP blocks inbound connections, changing Terraria settings alone will not solve the problem.
What to do when port forwarding is impossible
Use a VPN-based virtual LAN
The Terraria server guide describes VPN services as one alternative to direct forwarding. Every player must install and join the same VPN network, and the server address is the virtual network address rather than the ordinary public address. A VPN adds another application and trust boundary, so use a service your group understands and keep its client versions compatible.
Move the server to a hosted machine
A rented game server or VPS avoids exposing a home router and can keep the process online when nobody is playing locally. Before purchasing, verify all of the following with the provider:

- The currently supported Terraria game and server version
- Whether vanilla and the current tModLoader release are supported separately
- How worlds, configuration files and mod files are uploaded and retrieved
- Whether automated backups exist, how long they are retained and how restoration works
- Console access or another way to restart the process and inspect logs
- Network, player-slot and storage limits, plus any restrictions on mods
- Where the server is hosted and how support handles version updates

Prepare every player identically
- Install the same current tModLoader release on the server and every client.
- Make a definitive mod list. A Workshop collection or exported list can reduce transcription errors.
- Enable exactly the same mods and versions for every player.
- Match the mod load order, not just the names. Resolve dependency prompts in the same way on each installation.
- Launch tModLoader and verify that each client reaches the menu without a missing-mod or version warning before attempting to join.
Do not begin connectivity troubleshooting until the mod lists match. A player who can launch a world locally can still fail to join because one mod is disabled, outdated or loaded in a different order.
Choose tModLoader Host & Play or a dedicated process
For an occasional group session, tModLoader Host & Play is the simplest route. For a world that should remain available, run the tModLoader dedicated server using the current tModLoader documentation and server utilities. Community server-utility and Docker documentation can help with automation, but it is version-specific; confirm that the instructions match the release you installed.

If you change the port, every joining player must use the new value and the router rule must match it.

Change mods cautiously
Back up the world and configuration before adding, removing or upgrading mods. A mod update can alter world data or player items, and reverting is much easier when the prior files are preserved. Treat backups as an operational safeguard, not as a guarantee that every mod change is reversible.
Keep the world available and recoverable
Run the server independently
A dedicated server must remain running on the host computer or remote machine. Configure the computer so it does not enter sleep mode during planned play, and keep the server process separate from the game client when the world needs to stay online after the owner logs out.
Back up before updates
Copy the world file and server configuration before Terraria, tModLoader or major mods are upgraded. Keep at least one copy outside the live server directory. Also back up before changing the mod list, moving the world to another machine or experimenting with configuration settings.
Use passwords and controlled access
Set a server password and share it only with intended players. If an unexpected player can connect, rotate the password and check that the router forwards only the intended port. Do not publish a home public address more widely than necessary.
Troubleshoot the failures that matter most

Crossplay and platform limits in 2026
This guide describes PC-oriented setup. A Windows dedicated-server procedure should not be presented as a universal method for every console or mobile edition.
The Terraria community’s September 2026 State of the Game discusses ongoing crossplay Phase One work and fixes associated with version 1.4.5.8. That status does not establish that every platform can join every server today. Before inviting players from another platform, verify the latest official announcement for the exact game edition, server build and platform pair. If compatibility is not explicitly confirmed, plan for all players to use the same supported platform path.
