Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Hytale servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
To move a Hytale singleplayer character to a server, stop the destination server, back up its current universe, and copy the matching UUID-named player file from the singleplayer save’s universe/players folder into the server’s corresponding folder. Restart the server and verify the character’s inventory, location, and progression. If you also need the singleplayer world and dimensions, transfer the complete universe instead of only one player file. The procedure works best when both saves use the same Hytale build; the official manual does not publish a cross-version migration guarantee, so keep a rollback copy before changing anything.
What exactly must be moved from singleplayer to a Hytale server?
Hytale stores world and player saves below a universe directory. A player-only migration moves the UUID-named file in universe/players; a world migration moves the complete universe, which includes player data plus all worlds and dimensions. An individual world folder does not contain the complete player-data set.

That distinction determines how disruptive the import will be:
| Transfer | What it carries | When to choose it | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Player-only | The selected character’s file from universe/players |
You want an existing multiplayer universe to keep its worlds and other players unchanged | Only the matching identity is transferred; the singleplayer world itself stays behind |
| Whole universe | All player data, worlds, and dimensions in the source universe | You want the server to become a continuation of the singleplayer save | It can replace more server content than intended |
Hytale.game documentation also describes a world-level playerdata/ area for inventories, saved positions, and statistics. Folder layouts can therefore vary by version or implementation. Use the source save’s actual structure rather than assuming every installation exposes identical directories.

Before copying anything, decide whether the destination is an established community universe or an empty server intended to reproduce the singleplayer game. On an established server, a whole-universe replacement can remove or hide worlds and other players’ data. On a new server, copying only one player file can leave the character in a world that does not contain the terrain or dimensions associated with its saved position.

Use this path when the destination server already has the correct world and you only need your inventory, position, and progression. Keep both saves untouched until the server has been checked after restart.
- Back up the destination universe. Stop before editing anything and copy or archive the server’s current
universedirectory. Store the archive outside the live server directory with a date in its name. Keep the original singleplayer save as a second recovery copy. A player-only rollback normally needs the original destination UUID file, while a whole-universe rollback needs the complete archived directory. - Stop the destination server completely. Use the host panel’s Stop control, or stop the process on a self-hosted machine. Do not replace files while Hytale is running: the server may write a save over your copied file or leave a partially updated file.
- Open the singleplayer save from Hytale. Launch Hytale, select Worlds, right-click the world containing the character you want, and choose Open Folder. This opens the save that Hytale is actually using rather than an arbitrarily selected directory.
- Open the player directory. In the folder that opens, go to
universe/players. Current provider instructions describe the player save as a JSON file whose filename is the player’s Hytale UUID. - Match the identity. Compare the source filename with the UUID used by the account on the destination server. Do not select a file merely because it is the newest or has a familiar display name; the UUID is the identity key. If the server has already created a fresh file for that account, download or copy it to your backup before replacing it.
- Copy the matching file. Upload or copy the source UUID file into the destination server’s
universe/playersdirectory. Keep the original filename and extension. Replace the server-generated file for that same UUID only after confirming that the backup contains it. - Start the server and verify. Restart the server, join with the same account, and check inventory, position, and character progression. A successful import should show the expected state rather than a newly initialized character.
On a managed host, the upload may be a drag-and-drop action in the file manager. On a self-hosted server, use the local filesystem or SFTP. The visible path can differ between installations, so navigate to the server’s own universe/players rather than inventing a provider-specific absolute path.
When should I upload the whole universe instead?
Upload the complete source universe when the worlds and dimensions must move with the character. The universe is the unit that contains all player data and all worlds/dimensions; copying only a world folder can leave player information behind.
Use a whole-universe transfer when
- The server is new or disposable and should continue the singleplayer save as-is.
- You need the source world’s blocks, dimensions, entities, and associated player progress together.
- You are moving the entire save between machines rather than joining an established community universe.
- The character’s saved position depends on terrain or a dimension that does not exist in the destination.
Avoid a whole-universe replacement when
- The destination contains worlds or other players that must remain available.
- You only need one character’s inventory and progression.
- You have not made a restorable backup of the destination universe.
- You are unsure which server instance or universe the panel currently loads.
Stop the server, archive the destination universe, and then upload the source universe through the host panel or copy it by filesystem/SFTP. Preserve the directory hierarchy so that the destination still contains universe/players and the world directories at the expected level. Start the server only after the upload has completed. A whole-universe upload is not an additive merge: treat it as replacing the destination save unless the host’s documented file tool explicitly provides a different operation.
Where is the Hytale UUID player file?
For the workflow documented by current Hytale hosting guides, the file is under the save’s universe/players directory and is named with the player’s Hytale UUID, usually as a JSON file. The UUID filename is more reliable than a character name because names can change or be displayed differently by a panel.
How to identify the right UUID
- Compare the source filename with the UUID associated with the account that will connect.
- Look for a destination file created when that account first connected, and preserve it before replacement.
- If several UUID files exist, do not merge their contents or rename them. Copy only the file belonging to the intended account.
- Use the account that will actually join after the restart. A file for a different account can be valid JSON yet still produce a fresh character for the connecting player.
Player data is tied to the universe in which it was created. Uploading a valid file to a different destination universe, or placing it one directory too high or too low, can make the server create a fresh character instead.

How do I upload the file through a hosting panel or SFTP?
The transfer method changes the interface, not the save-selection rules. In both cases, the server must be stopped and the destination universe must be backed up first.
Managed hosting panel
- Open the server’s file manager and stop the server from the control panel.
- Navigate to the server’s
universe/playersdirectory. - Download the existing destination UUID file before replacing it.
- Upload the source UUID-named player file, confirming replacement only after the backup is complete.
- Wait for the panel to report a completed upload before starting the server.
Nodecraft, Shockbyte, and exaroton publish Hytale workflows that use host-side file controls. Their button names and directory views can differ, so follow the panel’s actual folder tree rather than copying an absolute path from another provider.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Self-hosted server or SFTP
- Stop the Hytale server process and confirm that it is no longer writing saves.
- Use the local file manager or an SFTP client to open the server’s
universe/playersdirectory. - Copy the source file into that directory, preserving its exact UUID filename and extension.
- Check that ownership and permissions still allow the server process to read and write the file, then start the server.
Do not overwrite a live file while the process is running. A panel may show an upload as finished even though the server is still active; the stop state is a prerequisite, not an optional precaution.
What does the migration method cost?
The documented procedure is a file copy; it does not require a physical USB device or a separate migration product. A self-hosted administrator uses the existing machine’s filesystem or SFTP. A managed host uses its control panel and whatever storage and service plan the provider already offers.
Nodecraft, Shockbyte, and exaroton are examples of managed hosts with published Hytale file-transfer guidance, but plan prices, storage limits, transfer policies, partner programs, and commissions are provider-specific and are not universal figures. Choose a managed plan only after checking that it exposes the universe directory and permits uploads while the server is stopped. Do not assume that a panel’s backup feature is included, restorable, or equivalent to downloading your own copy.
What should I check before starting the server?
A short preflight check catches most failed imports before they become confusing in-game symptoms.

- Correct source save: The folder was opened from the intended world in Hytale’s Worlds menu.
- Correct directory: The source and destination both point to

- Complete upload: File size and transfer status indicate that the copy finished, and the extension was not changed.
- Server stopped during editing: No running process can overwrite the replacement.
- Scope is intentional: A player-only copy will not bring the singleplayer world; a whole-universe upload can replace destination worlds.
- Builds are noted: Record the Hytale build used by each save so a failure is not confused with an identity mistake.
Why does my Hytale character start fresh after moving the save?
A fresh character usually means the server did not find usable data for the UUID that joined. Stop the server again before correcting the file.

Wrong UUID file
Recheck the account identity and compare the filename, not the display name. Restore the destination backup if necessary, then copy the source file whose UUID matches the joining account.
Wrong universe
Some hosts expose multiple universes or instance directories. Confirm that the file was uploaded to the universe loaded by the server you are joining, not to a template, backup, or unused world directory.
Incorrect folder level
The expected location is the server’s universe/players. A file placed in a world folder, a parent directory, or a similarly named backup folder will not be read by the normal player-data loader.
Recommended Free Tools
Server was still running
Stop it, restore the backed-up destination file if it was overwritten, and repeat the copy while the process is fully stopped. Hytale’s own save operation can otherwise win the race and recreate the fresh file.
Version or format mismatch
The official server manual documents universe/ as world and player save data but does not publish a cross-version player-file migration matrix. A file from an older build may not deserialize on a newer build. Keep the original files, and if the same-build transfer works while the older file does not, treat build compatibility as the likely issue rather than repeatedly overwriting the only copy.
Upload changed the filename
Some file managers can append a second extension or rename a duplicate during upload. Confirm that the destination filename still matches the UUID exactly and that it remains the expected JSON file. Do not solve a duplicate-name prompt by renaming the UUID to a display name.
Can I move a singleplayer inventory without moving the world?
Yes. Copy the matching UUID file only, provided the destination universe is the world in which that character should exist. The inventory, saved position, and progression represented by that file move with the identity; the singleplayer world’s blocks and dimensions do not.

If the character’s saved position refers to terrain that is absent on the destination, the resulting location may be unsafe or unexpected. In that case, use a whole-universe transfer or restore the destination backup and move the character by the server’s normal in-game tools after confirming the import.
What server requirements and settings matter?
The file copy itself does not require a special port or view-distance setting, but the destination must run a supported Hytale server environment. Hypixel Studios’ server manual, updated October 12, 2026, gives the following current guidance:
| Requirement or setting | Guidance | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | At least 4 GB | Hypixel Studios minimum guidance for running the server |
| Java | Java 25 | Requirement stated in the 2026 manual |
| Default network port | 5520 UDP | Default listed by Hypixel Studios |
| View distance | 12 chunks / 384 blocks recommended maximum | Manual recommendation, not a player-data migration limit |
These figures do not prove that a migrated file is compatible with every build. They describe the server environment; save-format compatibility remains a separate risk. A server can meet the memory and Java guidance and still reject a player file from an incompatible build.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow should I verify the import after restart?
Join with the same account only after the server reports that startup has completed. Check the inventory first, then the character’s position, and finally the progression or statistics you expected to preserve. If the world was moved too, visit a known landmark or dimension from the singleplayer save to confirm that the whole universe loaded.
Do not delete the backup immediately after one successful login. Keep it until you have confirmed that the server can stop and start normally and that a later save does not revert the imported state. If only the inventory transferred but the position is unexpected, compare the destination terrain and dimensions with the source rather than assuming the player file was corrupted.
How do I roll back a failed import?
Stop the server, remove the replacement, and restore the backed-up destination universe or the original destination UUID file. Start the server and confirm that the pre-import character and worlds are back. Keep failed source files in a separate archive so you can inspect or retry them without altering the known-good backup.
For a whole-universe migration, restore the entire archived universe rather than trying to reconstruct individual world folders. For a player-only migration, restoring just the original UUID file is sufficient if no other destination files were changed. If the server was left running after the failed copy, stop it first so its next save cannot overwrite the rollback.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
What is the safest migration plan?
For an established server, choose a player-only replacement: it minimizes collateral changes while preserving the source character’s state. For a new server intended to reproduce the singleplayer save, choose a whole-universe upload. In either case, the safe sequence is fixed: backup, stop, identify the UUID, copy to the correct universe, restart, verify, and retain the backup until the character has been checked in game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will achievements or statistics transfer with the player file?
The documented world-level player-data layout includes inventories, saved positions, and statistics, but the exact fields can vary by Hytale build. Preserve the original file and verify the specific progression you care about after the first login.
Can two players use the same imported Hytale player file?
Do not intentionally assign one UUID-named file to multiple accounts. Hytale uses the UUID as the identity key, so each account should retain its own file; duplicate or renamed files can produce fresh characters or overwrite the wrong identity.
Should I edit the JSON file before uploading it?
No. The supported workflow is a file transfer, not manual JSON editing. Changing keys, syntax, or encoding can make the save unreadable; use a backup and an unmodified copy unless a future official tool documents a field-level edit.
Does copying a world folder include my complete multiplayer inventory?
No. Provider documentation distinguishes an individual world from the universe, which contains all player data and dimensions. To carry the complete player set, transfer the universe or copy the relevant UUID files separately.
Do I need to move every file in the players folder?
No. For a player-only import, copy the UUID-named file belonging to the account you are moving. Copying every player file can overwrite unrelated characters; move the complete universe only when you intentionally want all player and world data together.
Can I import data while the server is online?
Do not. Nodecraft and Shockbyte both direct administrators to stop the server before replacing files because the running process can write over the copy or leave inconsistent data.
What if my singleplayer save and server use different Hytale builds?
There is no cross-version player-file migration matrix in the official manual. Keep backups, test with a same-build copy when possible, and treat a failure on a newer build as an unresolved compatibility issue rather than repeatedly replacing the only file.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Is a USB drive required for this transfer?
No. A host panel, local filesystem, or SFTP connection is sufficient. A separate physical drive can hold an optional backup, but it is not part of the documented migration workflow.
The Bottom Line
Safest path: stop the server, back up its universe, copy the matching UUID file into universe/players, restart, and verify inventory, position, and progression. Transfer the whole universe only when its worlds and dimensions must come with the character.
