In Armed Police Batrider, “rank” is the game’s hidden difficulty value, not a player ladder or medal grade. A lower total-rank value makes play harder by increasing enemy presence, durability, attack frequency, some bullet speeds and item fall speed. Medal collecting is therefore a trade-off: higher-value medals improve your score but slightly lower total rank. The safest improvement plan is to decide whether each run prioritizes score, survival or a deliberately low difficulty, then spend special power-ups and bombs with that priority in mind.
The exact numbers below come from the specialist rank-system page for Japanese B version dated 1998-02-13. Treat them as version-specific arcade mechanics, not universal values for every port or emulation.

What “rank” means in Batrider
The rank system is an internal difficulty controller. It is separate from your score, player ranking, medal denomination and the title-screen course selection. The game tracks a total-rank value and a frame-rank value. As total rank falls, the game becomes more demanding; as it rises, difficulty is relieved. The technical guide describes rank effects on enemy frequency and count, enemy durability, attack frequency, certain bullet speeds and item fall speed. These effects are why a scoring decision can change the feel of a later section even when the screen pattern is otherwise familiar.
The detailed table at the Armed Police Batrider strategy wiki’s Rank System page is explicitly based on Japanese B version, researched as of 1998-02-13. The page is community-maintained rather than an official developer manual, so use the figures as a technical reference for that revision.

Medal values: the confirmed score–difficulty trade-off
For the Japanese B version covered by the guide, each medal’s value determines how much it changes total rank when collected. The guide groups medals into three bands:
| Medal value | Total-rank change when collected | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 100–900 points | No total-rank change | Score increases without the listed medal rank effect. |
| 1,000–9,000 points | −0x100 | Higher score, with a small reduction in total rank and therefore a small increase in difficulty. |
| 10,000 points | −0x200 | Highest documented medal tier; twice the listed rank reduction of a 1,000–9,000-point medal. |
The minus sign matters. A reduction in total rank is not a reward that makes the game easier; it pushes the internal difficulty upward. The hexadecimal values are the guide’s internal deltas. They are not percentages, seconds or a universal “difficulty meter” that can be converted safely without knowing the game’s counters and update rules.
These are per-medal effects as presented by the version-specific table. A run that collects many high-denomination medals accumulates more of the small reductions than a run that leaves them behind. That is the central tension between medal score and rank stability.
What is—and is not—known about medal chains
The rank page documents medal value bands and their rank effects, but it does not provide a complete, independently verifiable chain procedure. In particular, the available material does not establish a universal drop sequence, a timing window, a missed-medal reset rule or a guaranteed route that keeps every medal at a specific denomination.
That distinction prevents a common mistake: treating a player’s route notes as if they were the game’s global chain specification. One Japanese personal guide describes a particular route in which the author ignores medals because ordinary stage progression offers few collection opportunities, and mentions attempts at 30,000 × 2 or 50,000 × 2 scoring opportunities. Those observations are route-specific and do not prove a general chain mechanic.

If you want to build a medal-chain route, use the confirmed value effects as the accounting layer and verify the actual drop behavior in your own revision with recordings or a detailed stage manual. A useful test log should record:
- Stage, enemy or event that produced the medal.
- Displayed denomination at the moment of collection.
- Whether the previous medal was collected, missed or allowed to leave the screen.
- The game revision and course setting.
- Any visible change in enemy or item behavior after a long collection sequence.
This method lets you answer “how do I chain medals?” without inventing a reset rule that the available technical source does not document. Until the sequence is verified for your setup, call it a scoring experiment rather than a guaranteed route.

Choose your run’s priority before you collect
Medal decisions become clearer when you separate three goals. None is universally best.
Score-first play
Take high-value medals when the collection is safe and the score matters more than keeping the later rank gentle. Accept that repeated 1,000–9,000-point and 10,000-point pickups lower total rank. Do not spend a life or a critical bomb merely to force a medal: the score gain is not worth losing the run’s survival resources.
Low-rank, consistency-first play
Leave high-denomination medals when collecting them would create avoidable pressure, especially in a difficult section you are still learning. The guide’s broader strategic summary recommends ignoring medals and avoiding unnecessary special power-ups when the aim is easier rank maintenance. This is a tactical option, not a rule that every score player should follow.

Balanced play
Collect low-value medals freely because the documented bands assign them no total-rank change, then take higher tiers only when the route is stable. A balanced run treats a 10,000-point medal as a deliberate difficulty purchase: take it when the score opportunity is secure, skip it when the next pattern is already at your limit.

Medal effects are only one part of the system. The guide describes a frame-rank process that continually changes total rank. Frame rank starts at 4 plus your remaining credits. Once frame rank has risen, it cannot decrease during that run. Continuing resets frame rank, which is one reason a continue can feel different from simply reaching the same point after a death.
Total rank falls by a fixed amount per frame, with the amount determined by frame rank. A higher frame rank therefore creates stronger ongoing pressure on total rank. The practical implication is simple: avoid raising frame rank casually, because you cannot later lower it through ordinary play.
| Action | Frame-rank increase | Decision implication |
|---|---|---|
| Shot special power-up | +1 | Immediate shot strength or coverage in exchange for lasting frame-rank pressure. |
| Option special power-up | +1 | Use when the extra option fire is worth the future difficulty. |
| Special extend | +2 | A large one-time increase; do not trigger it solely because it is available. |
Use a special when its immediate offensive or survival benefit is greater than the difficulty it will add over the rest of the run. Saving every special is not automatically correct: dying because you refused a needed power-up can cost more than the rank increase. The useful question is “Will this activation prevent a likely death or secure a major scoring opportunity?” rather than “Can I avoid all frame-rank increases?”
Item pickups and their rank deltas
The same version-specific table shows that ordinary item collection generally lowers total rank, but the size varies dramatically. The following examples are hexadecimal changes from that table:

| Item | Total-rank change |
|---|---|
| Small shot item | −0x100 |
| Large shot item | −0x8000 |
| Option item | −0x8000 |
| Small bomb item | −0x800 |
| Large bomb item | −0x20000 |
Comparing these values explains why “collect every power-up” is not the same as “keep rank low.” A small shot item’s listed change is tiny beside a large bomb item’s change. The values are internal game units, so do not translate them into a percentage of difficulty without a documented conversion.
Bombs, bullets, grazing and deaths
Bomb use
Ordinary bomb use has no listed total-rank penalty in the guide. That makes a normal bomb a sensible survival tool when the alternative is a death or a lost scoring position. The same table lists a −0x8000 total-rank change for a partial bomb and for a bomb used at full stock. In other words, the context of the bomb matters; “bombing” is not one single rank event.
Do not bomb constantly just to manipulate rank. A bomb should buy survival, clear an attack that would force a miss or preserve a valuable route. If the bomb is used only because the stock is full, include the listed rank reduction in your plan.
Bullet sealing and grazing
The guide says bullet sealing lowers total rank, while grazing raises it. It counts sealing by firing event, with enemy-specific exceptions, and counts grazing through score increments. In rank terms, sealing increases pressure and grazing provides relief. Grazing remains a survival risk: attempting to farm it near a dense pattern can cost a life, erase a chain opportunity or force an emergency bomb. Treat it as a side effect of confident play, not as a reason to stand in danger.

A death raises total rank, which reduces difficulty. That can make the next section less intense, but the game reference cautions that rank gained from extends can outweigh rank reduced by deaths. The practical guides therefore do not recommend intentional suicide as a normal rank-control technique. A deliberate death costs a life, interrupts your equipment and may not produce the net rank relief you expected.

Three practical plans for a full run
Plan A: learning a difficult section
- Start by identifying the section where enemy durability, attack frequency or item speed is causing failures.
- Use normal bombs for survival when needed; the guide lists no total-rank change for ordinary bomb use.
- Skip high-value medals in that section until the pattern is reliable. You can add the score later without simultaneously increasing the pressure.
- Activate a shot or option special only when it prevents a likely death or gives essential control. Record the activation so you know how much frame rank you carried into the next attempt.
- Review whether the failure came from rank pressure or from positioning. Rank management cannot replace learning the pattern.
Plan B: a score attempt
- Map which medal events are safe enough to collect and which require abandoning a bomb or a life.
- Take the higher denomination when the score gain justifies its documented total-rank reduction.
- Reserve specials for points where their extra fire secures a large scoring event or protects a long route; remember that shot and option specials add one frame-rank point and a special extend adds two.
- Use grazing only along lines you can already survive. A rank benefit is worthless if it ends the run.
- Keep a written total of high-value pickups. This makes later difficulty changes easier to correlate with your route.
Plan C: a low-rank consistency run
- Leave 1,000–9,000-point and 10,000-point medals when the next section is near your limit.
- Collect low-value medals when convenient, because the table lists no total-rank change for the 100–900 band.
- Prioritize positioning and survival over optional special activations. Every shot or option special adds one frame-rank point; a special extend adds two.
- Take large items only when their power is necessary. Their listed rank deltas are much larger than those of small items.
- Do not engineer deaths as a substitute for this plan; the reference warns that extends and other events can offset the relief.
Title rank, courses and version limits
Title-screen rank is another layer that can alter starting conditions. The rank guide describes a range from C0, the hardest state after power-on, to 00, the easiest. During attract loops, returning to the title screen lowers title rank by two per return. Title rank then contributes to course-dependent starting rank.
The guide also says the lower bound appears to be zero in Advanced course and that other courses were not fully researched. Do not assume that an Advanced-course limit, title-screen behavior or starting value applies identically to every course, operator setting or modern port.
Version B itself is historically significant: the game reference says it removed an infinite pattern found after the original release. That release history is separate from the rank table’s precise Japanese B, 1998-02-13 scope. If your copy is a different revision, verify medal and item deltas before building a route around them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA repeatable practice workflow
- Lock the environment. Record the version, course, credit setting and whether you are using original hardware, emulation or a later collection.
- Establish a baseline. Play one run without deliberately changing your medal habits. Note where difficulty rises and where you activate specials.
- Change one variable. On the next attempt, skip only the high-value medals in one section, or delay one special. Changing one factor makes the result interpretable.
- Use video review. Check the displayed medal value, item size, bomb context and frame at each event. This is especially important because the available source does not document a universal chain reset.
- Separate survival from scoring. Mark deaths caused by a pattern, by rank pressure and by a failed collection attempt. A medal route is not an improvement if it lowers your clear rate.
- Keep the route revision-specific. If you move to another version or course, repeat the baseline rather than assuming the Japanese B table carries over.
Where to play
The game reference lists Armed Police Batrider in the Astro City Mini V tabletop arcade collection, released on 2022-07-28. That confirms the collection as a documented way to play; it does not establish current stock, price or regional availability. The collection may also expose settings that differ from an arcade operator’s original configuration, so record the revision and course options when comparing results.
Bottom line for medal chains and rank
Use medals as a controlled trade-off, not as free points. In Japanese B, 100–900-point medals have no listed total-rank effect, 1,000–9,000-point medals lower total rank by 0x100, and 10,000-point medals lower it by 0x200. Special activations permanently raise frame rank during a run, while ordinary bombs have no listed rank cost and deaths reduce difficulty at the price of a life. Because the available technical material does not verify a universal medal-chain sequence, build and test your own route for the exact version you play. The strongest improvement is the one that raises your score without making the next section harder than your survival skills can support.
