Windows 11 on Arm can run many Windows games, but “works” depends on more than whether a game executable is x86 or x64. Native Arm64 builds give the cleanest path; Prism emulation can run many user-mode x86 and x64 games; kernel-level drivers, especially anti-cheat, remain the hard compatibility boundary. The most reliable approach is to verify the title, update the Windows and driver stack, remove background load, then tune resolution and effects while watching frame pacing—not just average FPS.
Use this sequence for a Steam, Epic or Xbox PC title, and switch to cloud gaming or an x86 gaming PC when the game’s driver or anti-cheat component cannot run on Arm.

How Windows on Arm runs PC games
Windows 11 on Arm supports Arm64 applications directly and can run x86 and x64 applications through built-in emulation. Microsoft describes that emulation as transparent: it makes the existing Windows software ecosystem available without requiring an application rewrite.
Native Arm64 games
A native Arm64 game contains code compiled for the processor in an Arm laptop. It avoids instruction translation, so it is the preferred route for CPU efficiency, frame-time consistency and battery-conscious play. Native support still requires the game’s graphics, launcher and peripherals to have compatible Windows 11 Arm drivers.

x86 and x64 games through Prism
Windows 11 24H2 introduced Prism, the current emulation technology for x86 software on Arm. Prism just-in-time compiles x86 instructions into Arm64 code, caches translated blocks and reuses those blocks to reduce repeated translation work. You do not install Prism separately; it is part of Windows.
Emulation applies to user-mode code. A game can therefore have an executable that launches successfully while a kernel-mode component fails. In 2025 Microsoft added AVX and AVX2 support to Prism, expanding the set of modern applications and games that can start, but that change does not make unsupported kernel drivers compatible.
The kernel-driver boundary
Windows cannot translate kernel-mode drivers in the same way it translates user-mode instructions. A kernel driver must be compiled for Arm64. Graphics, input, device and anti-cheat drivers therefore decide many borderline cases. If a title reports that its anti-cheat service is missing, incompatible or unable to initialize, changing in-game graphics settings will not solve the underlying problem.

- Search the title on WorksOnWoA.com. Treat the result as a starting point, not a permanent guarantee. Windows builds, OEM firmware, game patches and anti-cheat updates can change behavior.
- Read the publisher’s current PC requirements and launcher notes. Look for an Arm64 build, supported Windows edition and any required anti-cheat, DRM or peripheral software.
- Check anti-cheat separately. An emulatable game executable is not enough if its kernel anti-cheat driver lacks Arm64 support. Microsoft lists Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye, Denuvo and XIGNCODE3 among systems with Windows-on-Arm support or integration, but support remains specific to each game and configuration.
- Confirm the delivery path. A title may be available as a local Windows install, as a cloud stream, or only on an x86 gaming PC. Storefront availability and local-install eligibility are separate from CPU emulation.
Do this check again after a major Windows update or a game’s anti-cheat update. A compatibility entry is a snapshot, not a lifetime certification.
Use this performance-tuning sequence
1. Bring Windows, firmware and drivers up to date
Install the newest Windows 11 build offered for the laptop, with at least Windows 11 24H2 if you want the documented Prism improvements. Then install firmware, the chipset package and the graphics driver supplied by the PC manufacturer. Microsoft’s Arm guidance warns that hardware and game drivers must be designed for Windows 11 Arm; an unsupported driver can stop a game, peripheral or utility from working.

Restart after platform and graphics updates before judging performance. Test one game after the update rather than changing several variables at once, so a regression can be identified.
2. Select a native build when one exists
Check the game or publisher download options for an Arm64 release and select it instead of an x86 or x64 package. A native build removes Prism’s translation work. If the only package is x86/x64, let Prism handle it and test after updating Windows; AVX and AVX2 support added in 2025 may allow a game that previously failed to launch.

3. Remove competing workloads
For a clean test, close extra launchers, browser tabs, overlays, screen recorders, RGB utilities and other background tools. These programs consume CPU time, memory bandwidth, storage I/O or GPU scheduling capacity. Microsoft’s 2025 gaming work specifically addresses background-workload management, power and scheduling behavior, graphics-stack optimization and updated drivers.
Re-enable one overlay or utility at a time after the game is stable. If frame-time spikes return, the last item re-enabled is a useful suspect.
4. Use the laptop’s performance power mode
For demanding sessions, connect the charger and choose the laptop maker’s performance mode or Windows’ highest available power mode in Settings > System > Power & battery. Arm laptops often balance performance, heat and battery life aggressively; a battery-saving profile can reduce sustained clocks even when the first minute of play looks normal.

Allow unobstructed airflow and test a long session, not only a short benchmark. Watch for a gradual drop in clocks or frame rate, which points to sustained thermal or power limits rather than a one-time shader hitch.
5. Establish a sensible resolution baseline
Start at 1080p, or the device’s recommended native resolution, with ray tracing disabled. Record average FPS and frame pacing for the same repeatable scene. If the GPU is the limit, lower the settings that create the most work:
- Shadows and contact shadows
- Reflections and screen-space reflections
- Volumetric fog, clouds and lighting
- Ray tracing effects
Texture quality is usually less expensive than those effects when the laptop has enough video memory, so lower textures only when memory pressure, stutter or visible streaming problems indicate a need.
6. Use an in-game upscaler, and consider Auto Super Resolution
When a game offers an upscaler, render below the output resolution and let the game reconstruct the image. This can raise GPU-limited frame rates while preserving more detail than simply lowering the display resolution.
Microsoft describes Auto Super Resolution as an operating-system-level AI upscaler for DirectX games: the game renders at a lower resolution and the system produces a sharper output. Availability depends on hardware and, in Microsoft’s documented rollout, preview status. Treat it as an optional experiment, not a feature every Arm laptop supports.

7. Judge frame pacing, not only the FPS counter
A high average can hide irregular delivery. Compare one-percent lows or a frame-time graph when the game provides them, and note hitching during shader compilation, area transitions and heavy effects. If average FPS is acceptable but controls feel uneven, reduce background work, cap the frame rate to a stable value, or lower CPU-heavy settings such as crowds and simulation before lowering every visual option.
Compatibility and performance by delivery path
| Path | Where the game executes | CPU code path | Main compatibility gate | What determines smoothness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Native Arm64 install | On the Arm PC | Arm64 code without x86/x64 translation | Arm64 graphics, device and anti-cheat drivers | GPU capability, sustained power and thermals |
| Emulated Windows install | On the Arm PC | x86 or x64 code translated by Prism | Arm64 kernel drivers, including anti-cheat | Translation overhead, CPU load, GPU capability and thermals |
| Cloud gaming | On a remote gaming server | Remote hardware runs the game | Cloud service and title availability | Network bandwidth, latency and connection stability |
| x86 gaming PC | On an x86 PC | Native x86/x64 execution | The game’s normal PC requirements and drivers | That PC’s GPU, CPU, drivers, power and thermals |
A native Arm build is normally the most efficient local option. Emulation can be perfectly usable for some games, but its overhead varies by title and workload. Cloud gaming avoids local driver and anti-cheat limitations when the provider supports the game, yet adds network dependence and input latency. An x86 PC remains the broadest local fallback for games that require unsupported Arm64 kernel components.
Why anti-cheat can block a game that otherwise launches
Anti-cheat software often combines an ordinary user-mode service with a kernel component. Prism can translate the ordinary executable, but it cannot translate a kernel driver. The result is a characteristic failure: the launcher opens, then the game refuses to start, disconnects at launch, or reports that the anti-cheat service is not running.
First install the latest Windows, firmware and OEM graphics driver, then check whether the specific title’s anti-cheat vendor and game publisher document Arm support. Do not assume that a vendor’s general Windows-on-Arm integration covers every game. If the title still requires an x86-only kernel driver, the practical choices are a supported cloud session or an x86 gaming PC.
Installing Xbox PC and Game Pass titles locally
The Xbox PC app can install supported titles locally on Arm PCs. Microsoft’s 2025 Insider rollout covered supported games, including many PC Game Pass titles, but the rollout is title-specific and can change. The presence of a game in the catalog does not by itself prove that its local Arm installation is enabled.

- Open the game’s listing and look for an install option on the Arm device.
- Install only when the listing identifies the title as supported for the current rollout.
- After installation, launch once with overlays and recording tools closed, then apply the graphics sequence above.
If the app offers no local install, or the game fails at an anti-cheat or driver check, use Xbox Cloud Gaming when the title is available there. Otherwise, play it on an x86 gaming device. Cloud play is a compatibility fallback, not a way to convert every unsupported local install into an Arm-native game.
How to diagnose a failed launch
The game does not install or the launcher says the platform is unsupported
- Confirm that Windows 11 is current and that the laptop is running an Arm edition supported by the game.
- Check WorksOnWoA.com and the publisher’s requirements for a newer compatible build.
- Look for an Arm64 package; if none exists, verify that the x86/x64 launcher is allowed to run under Prism.
- Check whether the store offers a cloud version or whether an x86 PC is required.
The game launches, then closes or refuses multiplayer
- Identify the anti-cheat system and verify Arm64 support for that exact title.
- Update the OEM graphics driver and firmware; do not substitute an unapproved driver package.
- Temporarily close overlays, recorders and hardware-monitoring utilities that can interfere with launch or injection.
- If the failure names a kernel driver, graphics driver or anti-cheat service, treat it as a compatibility issue rather than an FPS-tuning issue.
The game runs but stutters
- Test with browser tabs, launchers, overlays and RGB utilities closed.
- Use plugged-in performance mode and check for heat-related clock reduction during a long session.
- Lower shadows, volumetrics, reflections and ray tracing before reducing texture quality.
- Try the game’s upscaler, then compare frame-time consistency at a capped, stable frame rate.
The frame rate is low from the first scene
- Determine whether the GPU is saturated or the CPU is busy with simulation, crowds or background work.
- Reduce the settings that match the bottleneck instead of applying a blanket low preset.
- Check whether the game is emulated and whether a native Arm64 release is available.
- Retest after Windows, firmware and graphics-driver updates.
What Microsoft’s graphics claims do—and do not—mean
Microsoft reported up to 2.3× ray-tracing performance gains for DXR 1.2 features on compatible hardware and supported scenarios in 2025. That is a DirectX feature figure, not a universal Windows-on-Arm game benchmark. It does not mean every game will double its FPS, and it does not remove the need for an Arm64-compatible driver.
Likewise, Prism’s AVX and AVX2 support broadens launch compatibility, but it does not guarantee console-level performance. Game engines differ in CPU intensity, shader behavior, anti-cheat design and graphics demands, while Arm laptops differ in cooling and power limits. Use a repeatable in-game scene on your own device to establish a realistic target.

- Native Arm64 available and anti-cheat supported: install that build, update the platform, then tune graphics for stable frame pacing.
- Only x86/x64 available, no kernel-driver block: run it through Prism on Windows 11 24H2 or later and apply the same performance sequence.
- Executable works but anti-cheat or another kernel driver is unsupported: stop local troubleshooting; choose a cloud session or an x86 PC.
- Local Game Pass installation unavailable: check whether the title is included in the current Xbox PC Arm rollout, then use cloud gaming or another device if it is not.
This approach keeps compatibility checks separate from graphics tuning. It prevents hours of changing resolution when the real blocker is a kernel driver, while still giving emulated games the best chance to deliver stable performance.
