The most effective way to improve gaming performance on the Asus ROG Ally is to combine the correct power mode with a lower internal resolution, sensible graphics settings, a stable FPS cap, and adequate cooling. Do not assume that Turbo mode, an 8 GB VRAM allocation, or frame generation will improve every game. The right setting depends on whether the game is limited by the GPU, CPU, memory, thermals, storage, or shader compilation.

For most demanding games, start with Performance mode, 900p or 720p with an appropriate upscaler, a 40- or 60-FPS cap, and the default or 6 GB VRAM allocation on the original 16 GB ROG Ally. Then change one setting at a time and test the same scene.

First, identify your ROG Ally model

Menu names and performance behavior vary between the models:

  • ROG Ally (2023, RC71L): The original model, with 16 GB of memory and a 1080p, 120 Hz display.
  • ROG Ally X (2024, RC72LA): It has different memory, battery, storage, and USB-C hardware, so its power and memory behavior are not identical to the original Ally.
  • ROG Xbox Ally models: Newer Armoury Crate interfaces may place controls under Settings > Performance instead of the original Settings > Operating Mode path.

Armoury Crate SE labels can change with the device and software version. If a path below does not match your screen, look for the equivalent Performance, Operating Mode, GPU Settings, or Command Center control. ASUS maintains current Ally software and recovery guidance in its ROG Ally support FAQ.

#1 Best Overall

Five-minute performance checklist

  1. Connect the official charger or a suitable USB-C Power Delivery charger capable of supplying the Ally’s required power.
  2. Restart the Ally.
  3. Install pending Windows updates.
  4. Open Armoury Crate and install available device, BIOS, graphics, chipset, and Armoury Crate updates.
  5. Update the game, launcher, and relevant Xbox software.
  6. Use the same game scene before and after each change.
  7. Record resolution, power mode, FPS cap, GPU and CPU usage, temperatures, and whether the Ally is plugged in.

Changing ten settings simultaneously makes it impossible to know what helped. Restart after BIOS, driver, Armoury Crate, or VRAM changes. ASUS notes that Windows, ASUS, AMD, Armoury Crate, and Xbox updates can affect Ally performance and functionality (ASUS performance guide).

Choose the right power mode

Open Armoury Crate and select the operating mode that matches the game and power source. On the original interface, the path is usually Armoury Crate SE > Settings > Operating Mode. Newer models may use Armoury Crate > Settings > Performance > Operating Mode.

  • Silent: Suitable for older games, lightweight games, emulation, and battery-focused play.
  • Performance: The best starting point for demanding games, particularly when playing on battery or when heat and noise matter.
  • Turbo: Intended to provide the highest performance, especially while connected to AC power. It also increases power consumption, fan noise, and heat.
  • Manual: An advanced option for custom wattage and fan behavior. Leave it alone until the standard profiles are working correctly.

Turbo increases the available power budget, but it does not guarantee higher FPS. A game may be CPU-limited, already capped, thermally throttled, or affected by shader stutter. A stable 40 FPS in Performance mode can feel better than a fluctuating 50 FPS in Turbo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For demanding games, test Performance first. If the Ally is plugged into a suitable charger, test Turbo afterward. Compare frame-time consistency, not only the highest number shown by an overlay. ASUS documents the behavior of Armoury Crate operating modes in its operating-mode FAQ.

Lower resolution intelligently

The Ally’s 1080p panel is demanding for its integrated Radeon graphics. Lowering the game’s internal render resolution often delivers a larger improvement than setting every graphics option to Low.

  1. Try 1280×720 for the most demanding games.
  2. If 720p is too soft, try 1600×900.
  3. Use the game’s built-in FSR, XeSS, or dynamic-resolution option when it produces a good image.
  4. If the game has no satisfactory upscaler, enable AMD Radeon Super Resolution (RSR).
  5. Do not stack multiple upscalers without testing. Use either the game’s scaler or RSR unless a particular combination is known to work well.

RSR lets the game render at a lower resolution and the AMD driver upscale the output toward 1080p. It can help when the GPU is the bottleneck, but it will not fix a CPU-limited game, shader-compilation stutter, asset-streaming problems, or a faulty driver. ASUS explains the feature in its ROG Ally FAQ.

Use sharpening conservatively. Keep textures at Medium or High if memory permits, but reduce them if the game reports memory pressure or shows texture pop-in. Turn off ray tracing before heavily reducing texture quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce the most expensive graphics settings first

Do not automatically set every option to Low. Reduce settings in this order:

Usually GPU-intensive

  • Ray tracing
  • Global illumination
  • Shadows and shadow-map resolution
  • Volumetric fog and clouds
  • Reflections and screen-space reflections
  • Ambient occlusion
  • Foliage and view distance
  • Crowd density
  • Hair or fur simulation
  • Anti-aliasing quality

Ray tracing should normally be disabled on the Ally unless the game remains comfortably playable without sacrificing the desired frame rate. Shadows, volumetrics, reflections, and foliage often provide better performance gains than reducing textures.

Usually lower-impact

  • Texture quality, provided the game is not short of VRAM
  • Anisotropic filtering
  • UI quality
  • Model detail in less demanding games

When lowering resolution does not help

Check GPU utilization while the game is running. If the GPU is close to 95–100% when FPS is low, reduce resolution and GPU-heavy effects. If GPU utilization is low while FPS remains poor, the game may be CPU-limited or affected by simulation, shader compilation, asset streaming, or engine-level frame pacing.

For CPU-limited games, reduce crowd density, simulation quality, view distance, physics, and background NPC counts. Open-world games can remain slow even at 720p because their limitation is not the GPU.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose an appropriate VRAM allocation

The Ally uses shared system memory for graphics. Armoury Crate exposes a setting for the amount reserved for the GPU. On the original Ally, look under Armoury Crate SE > Settings > Operating Mode > GPU Settings. Newer models may use Armoury Crate > Settings > Performance > GPU Settings.

On the original 16 GB Ally, start with the default setting or 6 GB. ASUS describes 6 GB as a possible balance for some games, not a universal optimum. Test 8 GB only when a particular game benefits from it or reports insufficient graphics memory.

More reserved VRAM is not automatically better. It can leave less system memory for Windows, the game, launchers, and background services. Too little can contribute to texture or launch problems in selected titles. Reboot after changing the allocation.

If a game becomes unstable, textures disappear, or Windows feels more constrained:

  1. Return to the previous VRAM allocation.
  2. Reboot.
  3. Verify the game’s graphics settings.
  4. Disable overlays and test again.
  5. Update or reinstall the official ASUS/AMD graphics driver if the problem began immediately after a driver change.

Cap FPS for better frame pacing

Higher average FPS is not always better performance. A stable cap can improve frame pacing, input consistency, heat, and battery life.

  • 30 FPS: Suitable for demanding cinematic or AAA games.
  • 40 FPS: A strong compromise on the Ally’s 120 Hz display because 120 divides evenly by 40.
  • 45 FPS: Useful when the game can sustain it but cannot hold 60.
  • 60 FPS: A good target for lighter games and many competitive titles.
  • 90 or 120 FPS: Mainly for older, lightweight, or competitive games that can sustain those rates.

Try the game’s built-in limiter first. If it is unavailable or unreliable, test Armoury Crate’s limiter, then AMD Software’s limiter. Avoid running several limiters at once unless testing proves that the combination improves frame pacing. ASUS describes the Ally’s FPS limiter and its battery benefits in its ROG Ally FAQ.

Use 120 Hz for 40, 60, or 120 FPS targets. A 40-FPS cap at 120 Hz can produce a more even cadence than 40 FPS at 60 Hz. Use 60 Hz when saving battery is more important or when a game behaves poorly at 120 Hz. Windows and Armoury Crate may expose refresh-rate controls differently by model and version.

Test AMD Radeon features carefully

Radeon Super Resolution

Use RSR when the game lacks a satisfactory built-in upscaler. It is most useful in GPU-limited games and should be compared directly with the game’s own FSR, XeSS, or dynamic-resolution implementation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Radeon Anti-Lag

Anti-Lag is primarily a responsiveness feature. It may help latency-sensitive games, but it is not a guaranteed FPS increase. Test it in the specific game and disable it if it causes compatibility problems.

AMD Fluid Motion Frames

Frame generation can increase the displayed frame rate without increasing the game’s native rendering rate by the same amount. It may introduce latency, artifacts, HUD problems, or uneven pacing, especially when the base FPS is low.

First achieve a stable native rate, ideally around 30–45 FPS, then test AFMF. Do not use frame generation to hide severe stutter. When AFMF is active, compare native frame-time behavior as well as the displayed FPS; ASUS notes that AMD’s performance overlay may be preferable for metrics in this situation (ASUS Armoury Crate FAQ).

Control heat and sustained power

If performance starts high and falls after several minutes, suspect thermal or power throttling rather than an ordinary graphics-setting problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep intake and exhaust vents unobstructed.
  • Do not play on beds, blankets, or other soft surfaces.
  • Clean visible dust from vents without forcing debris into the device.
  • Use the Ally in a reasonably cool environment.
  • Check that both fans operate normally.
  • Compare plugged-in and battery performance.
  • Watch for a sudden clock-speed or power drop after several minutes.

Disabling CPU boost is an optional troubleshooting experiment, not a universal performance tweak. Where Windows exposes the control, the path may be Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > Processor power management > Processor performance boost mode. If heat or inconsistent frame pacing is the problem, test a less aggressive setting. Restore Aggressive, Enabled, or the prior value if FPS falls or the game is CPU-limited. Windows Central has reported this as a possible heat and stutter remedy, but ASUS does not guarantee a universal benefit (Windows Central report).

Remove low-risk Windows bottlenecks

  • Turn on Windows Game Mode.
  • Enable Optimizations for windowed games for compatible borderless or windowed titles.
  • Disable unnecessary startup applications.
  • Close browsers, launchers, cloud-sync tools, RGB utilities, and recording software when they are not needed.
  • Disable overlays one at a time, including Xbox Game Bar, Steam, Discord, AMD, and Armoury Crate overlays.
  • Keep adequate free space on the internal SSD.
  • Avoid simultaneous game, Windows Store, and launcher downloads.

Avoid random gaming optimizers, registry packs, aggressive debloat scripts, indiscriminate shader-cache deletion, and disabling security services. They can break updates, drivers, Xbox services, input handling, or recovery. Do not install laptop-only AMD drivers or mix drivers from incompatible product families.

Use these starting presets

Use case Starting settings
Balanced Performance mode; 900p or 720p; built-in FSR/XeSS first, otherwise RSR; 40 or 60 FPS; ray tracing off; shadows and volumetrics Low or Medium; textures Medium or High according to memory behavior; 6 GB VRAM on the original 16 GB Ally; 120 Hz.
Battery-focused Silent or Performance mode; 720p or 900p; 30 or 40 FPS; 60 or 120 Hz according to the target; frame generation usually off; CPU boost unchanged initially.
Maximum performance Turbo mode on AC power; 900p or 1080p only when sustainable; 60 FPS or uncapped for testing; ray tracing off unless easily playable; test 6 GB and then 8 GB VRAM only if the game benefits; use an aggressive fan profile where available, then restore an FPS cap for regular play.

Diagnose common stutters and performance drops

Symptom Likely explanation First test
GPU usage is near 95–100% and FPS is low GPU limitation Lower resolution, enable upscaling, and reduce GPU-heavy effects.
GPU usage is low while FPS is poor CPU limit, shader compilation, or engine issue Reduce crowds and simulation settings; inspect frame times.
FPS starts high and falls later Thermal or power throttling Check vents, fans, charger, temperatures, and sustained clock speeds.
Textures pop in or disappear VRAM pressure or asset streaming Reduce textures and streaming-pool settings; test VRAM allocation.
Stutters occur when entering new areas Shader compilation or asset streaming Allow shaders to compile; update the game and driver.
Stutter began after an update Driver or Armoury Crate regression Restart, disable overlays, and check for a newer official update.
Battery performance is much worse than AC performance Normal power limitation Compare Performance mode on battery with Turbo mode on suitable AC power.
Reported FPS is higher but gameplay feels worse Frame-generation artifacts or poor frame pacing Disable AFMF and compare native frame times.

These are troubleshooting heuristics, not guarantees. Competitive games may prioritize latency over frame generation; open-world games may be limited by CPU or streaming; older games may conflict with modern overlays; and anti-cheat systems can interfere with third-party tools.

What to do after a driver or Armoury Crate problem

If a problem begins immediately after an update:

  1. Confirm that the issue is reproducible in the same scene.
  2. Restart the Ally.
  3. Disable overlays.
  4. Check ASUS support for a newer BIOS, graphics driver, chipset driver, or Armoury Crate update.
  5. Use Windows Device Manager rollback only when the option is available and the previous driver remains installed.
  6. Prefer the official ASUS support package for the exact Ally model.
  7. Use third-party driver-cleaning utilities only as an advanced last resort, with a recovery plan.

If Command Center, Desktop Mode, or performance controls disappear, restart first and confirm that Armoury Crate SE is running. If the problem remains, reinstall Armoury Crate SE using the official installer for the specific model, reboot, and recheck BIOS and driver versions. ASUS documents this recovery process in its support FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do chargers and docks increase FPS?

A suitable charger can allow the Ally to sustain its higher plugged-in power modes, but a dock or higher-wattage charger does not upgrade the internal GPU. A 65 W-class USB-C PD setup is relevant when you need Turbo operation, external display output, or peripherals. Verify the charger’s USB-C PD capability and the requirements of your specific model.

Storage upgrades can provide more room and help avoid a nearly full drive, but storage capacity alone does not guarantee higher FPS. Cases are protection accessories, not performance upgrades. Treat cooling accessories cautiously: reducing surface temperature does not necessarily improve sustained internal performance without controlled testing.
