Checked August 16, 2026: the Nintendo Switch family now offers far more than the current Pokémon RPGs. You can play modern adventures, remakes, photography and mystery spin-offs, free-to-start competitive games, and classic Pokémon titles through Nintendo Switch Online. Switch 2 adds the GameCube catalogue, the enhanced Pokémon Legends: Z-A Edition, and the exclusive Pokémon Pokopia.

This guide counts officially playable Pokémon software on Switch and Switch 2. It separates full releases, free-to-start games, Nintendo Classics, Switch 2 versions, and supporting apps. Availability can differ by region, language edition, storefront, and Nintendo Switch Online catalogue.

Mainline and RPG Pokémon games

Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!

These Kanto adventures remake the broad structure of Pokémon Yellow, with Pikachu or Eevee as the partner Pokémon. Their catching system is influenced by Pokémon GO, so capturing wild Pokémon is gentler and more motion-focused than in a conventional RPG.

#1 Best Overall
NAMCO MUSEUM ARCADE PAC (Nintendo Switch)
  • Save your quarters and bring the arcade home with the ultimate 13 games 'pac', "Namco Museum Arcade Pac".
  • Enjoy the nostalgic classics in "Namco Museum" and the flashy maze madness of "Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus" with friends or solo, at home or on the go for exciting arcade fun wherever you are - exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
  • Enjoy Namco classics such as:
  • Pac-Man
  • Galaga

The two versions contain different partner Pokémon and version exclusives. They are good entry points for children, newcomers, and returning players who want a familiar Kanto setting without the complexity of later games. They are not a straight replacement for a traditional Pokémon RPG.

Both games work with Poké Ball Plus. Pokémon Support also confirms that the accessory is compatible with Pokémon Sword and Shield; it is not required to play either title. See the official compatibility guidance.

Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield

Set in the Galar region, Sword and Shield retain the familiar badge-and-League progression while adding features such as the Wild Area and Dynamax battles. They are separate versions with exclusive Pokémon and other differences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Expansion Pass adds two substantial areas and additional story content. It is separate from the base game, so check the contents of any physical or digital bundle before buying. Pokémon HOME supports both games according to Nintendo’s current compatibility list.

Single-player play does not generally require Nintendo Switch Online. Online trading and battling do.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

These are Sinnoh remakes rather than new sequels. They preserve a more traditional route, gym, and League structure than Legends: Arceus or Scarlet and Violet, making them suitable for players who prefer classic Pokémon progression.

They are separate versions with exclusive Pokémon. Both connect with Pokémon HOME under Nintendo’s listed compatibility model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Legends: Arceus takes place in Hisui, an earlier version of the Sinnoh region. Exploration, research, real-time catching, and completing the Pokédex are more central than gym battles and a conventional Pokémon League.

It is the strongest Switch choice for players who want Pokémon exploration to feel more active and open-ended. It remains an RPG, but it should not be approached as another standard badge-collecting adventure. HOME connectivity is supported.

Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet

These open-world Paldea adventures let you tackle much of the region in a flexible order. They are separate versions with version-exclusive Pokémon, characters, and story differences.

Scarlet and Violet are Switch games playable on Switch 2. Switch 2 compatibility is not the same thing as a dedicated Switch 2 Edition, and performance or patch behaviour can depend on the current software version. The games support Pokémon HOME under Nintendo’s current list.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Legends: Z-A returns to the Kalos setting, with Lumiose City at its centre. It is an action-focused Pokémon adventure distinct from the traditional gym format. The Mega Dimension DLC is separate content.

There are two relevant versions:

  1. Switch version: playable on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
  2. Switch 2 Edition: playable only on Switch 2, with improved resolution and frame rate.

Owners of the Switch version can buy an Upgrade Pack instead of purchasing the complete game again. New buyers should compare the cost of the Switch version plus upgrade with the standalone Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo lists the Switch 2 Edition’s release date as October 16, 2025.

Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version

These are the Game Boy Advance remakes of the original Kanto adventures. They are important to the 30th-anniversary catalogue because they connect modern Switch players to the first-generation setting without being the original Game Boy releases.

Nintendo lists both as digital Switch releases and confirms Switch 2 compatibility. They are separate language editions, so check the regional eShop listing carefully before purchasing. Nintendo’s cited product information says Pokémon HOME compatibility is planned for the future; it should not be described as live unless the current product page confirms it.

These are not the original Pokémon Red, Blue, Green, or Yellow games.

Spin-offs and non-traditional Pokémon games

New Pokémon Snap

This sequel to the Nintendo 64 classic is a photography game rather than a catching-and-battling RPG. You travel through courses, observe Pokémon in their habitats, and build a photographic research collection. It is a strong choice for younger players and anyone who prefers exploration without traditional combat.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX

Rescue Team DX remakes the Game Boy Advance Red Rescue Team and the Nintendo DS Blue Rescue Team. It is a roguelike dungeon crawler in which Pokémon occupy the player’s role, with randomly structured dungeons, recruiting, and turn-based battles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The premium Switch remake is separate from the original Red Rescue Team, which is available through the Game Boy Advance Nintendo Classics catalogue.

Minecraft - Nintendo Switch

  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

Detective Pikachu Returns

This narrative mystery adventure follows the talking Detective Pikachu through investigations and puzzles. It does not use the standard gym-and-League structure and is better suited to players who want story and deduction than team-building combat.

Pokkén Tournament DX

Pokkén Tournament DX is an arcade-style fighting game. Its real-time Pokémon battles make it fundamentally different from both the RPGs and team-based games such as UNITE.

Pokémon Friends

Pokémon Friends is a puzzle-focused game with educational and training-oriented elements. Nintendo lists a July 22, 2025 release date on its regional product page, along with downloadable content and save-data cloud support. It is aimed at short, casual sessions rather than a full Pokémon adventure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

See Nintendo’s product page for current availability and DLC information.

Pokémon Pokopia

Pokémon Pokopia is a life-simulation and crafting game exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. You control a Ditto-like character, rebuild the world, craft, farm, decorate, and interact with Pokémon.

Nintendo lists a May 3, 2026 release date on the cited regional page. It supports local wireless play for two to four players and online play for one to four players. A paid Expansion Pass is available. Because it is Switch 2-only, it is the clearest reason to choose Nintendo’s newer console specifically for Pokémon.

Check the official product page for current regional details.

Free-to-start Pokémon games

“Free to start” does not mean that every item or feature is free. These games may contain optional purchases, ongoing content, or online requirements.

Pokémon UNITE

UNITE is a team-based multiplayer battle game. Nintendo describes it as free to start with optional in-game purchases, and an internet connection is required. Nintendo’s product information supports online matches of up to 10 players.

It is the best fit for players who want regular competitive multiplayer rather than a story-driven RPG. See Nintendo’s official listing for current account and online requirements.

Pokémon Quest

Pokémon Quest is a free-to-start action-adventure game with block-styled Pokémon and a progression system separate from the mainline RPGs. It is also available on mobile.

Pokémon Café ReMix

This free-to-start puzzle and restaurant-management game is built around short sessions, staff Pokémon, and continuing content. It is a casual option rather than a traditional Pokémon campaign.

Pokémon Champions

Pokémon Champions is a current battle-focused service for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. It links with Pokémon HOME and receives a free Switch 2 update with clearer graphics, according to Pokémon’s announcements.

Do not confuse it with Pokémon Stadium: Champions is a modern online battle game, while Stadium is a Nintendo 64 classic. Its contemporary listing describes it as free to start, but check the current eShop page for the latest monetisation terms.

Pokémon games in Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo Switch Online gives subscribers access to classic-game applications. The catalogue is region-dependent, so the Australian listings below should not be treated as a guarantee that every country has precisely the same releases.

Game Classic catalogue Hardware Required membership
Pokémon Trading Card Game Game Boy Switch and Switch 2 Nintendo Switch Online
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team Game Boy Advance Switch and Switch 2 Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
Pokémon Snap Nintendo 64 Switch and Switch 2 Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
Pokémon Puzzle League Nintendo 64 Switch and Switch 2 Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
Pokémon Stadium Nintendo 64 Switch and Switch 2 Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
Pokémon Stadium 2 Nintendo 64 Switch and Switch 2 Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness GameCube Switch 2 only Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
Pokémon Colosseum GameCube Switch 2 only Listed as upcoming in the cited catalogue

The Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo 64 applications are available on both Switch and Switch 2 where supported. The GameCube application is exclusive to Switch 2. Nintendo’s cited GameCube page lists Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness as included and Pokémon Colosseum as upcoming, so Colosseum should not be counted as playable until its catalogue listing changes.

Use Nintendo’s Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and GameCube catalogue pages to check the current regional list.

Switch 2: compatibility, editions, and exclusives

“Playable on Switch 2” can mean several different things:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. A Switch game runs through backward compatibility.
  2. A Switch game receives a free update.
  3. A Switch game has a paid upgrade pack.
  4. A separate Switch 2 Edition exists.
  5. The game is exclusive to Switch 2.

Most of the premium Pokémon catalogue falls into the first category. Buying Switch 2 does not automatically give every game a dedicated enhancement.

Best Value
Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics - Nintendo Switch
  • Experience your Favorite MARVEL vs. CAPCOM classics All in One – Enjoy 7 of your favorite classic titles that helped shaped the MARVEL vs. CAPCOM universe both single player and online.
  • Enjoy Enhanced Features Added to the Classic Collection – To enhance your playability experience, we incorporated the favorite added features from Capcom Fighting Collection including gallery mode, quick save, training mode for all fighting titles, and the high score challenge. Beginners and first timers into the franchise are also welcome to play through adjusted settings and execution of one-button specials!
  • Play with Friends Worldwide through Online Compatibility – This collection also includes rollback net code for a smooth and enjoyable experience online. Play casually or competitively through casual, ranked, or custom matches using rules of your choosing!

Legends: Z-A has both a Switch version and a dedicated Switch 2 Edition. Pokémon Pokopia is Switch 2-exclusive. Switch 2 also enables the GameCube Nintendo Classics catalogue, including Pokémon XD and the listed upcoming release of Pokémon Colosseum.

Switch 2 is the better purchase if you specifically want Pokopia, GameCube classics, or the enhanced Z-A Edition. The original Switch remains sufficient for the established premium catalogue and is the lower-cost route if those features are not priorities.

What Pokémon software is not currently on Switch?

Based on the official Switch catalogue checked for this guide, the following are not listed as playable Switch releases:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The original Pokémon Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow.
  • The original Gold, Silver, and Crystal.
  • Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald.
  • The original Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.
  • Black, White, and their sequels.
  • X and Y.
  • Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon.
  • Pokémon Bank, which is a 3DS service.

FireRed and LeafGreen are available, but they are Game Boy Advance remakes, not the original Game Boy games. This list describes the catalogue at the stated cutoff; it does not claim that these titles can never be released later.

Mobile-only software such as Pokémon GO, Pokémon Sleep, Pokémon Masters EX, and Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket is also outside the Switch catalogue. Pokémon HOME is a service, not a game.

Pokémon HOME: useful, but not a universal save-transfer system

Pokémon HOME stores and transfers compatible Pokémon between supported games. Nintendo’s current support listing includes Pokémon Champions, Legends: Z-A, Scarlet, Violet, Legends: Arceus, Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl, Sword, Shield, and both Let’s Go games.

HOME compatibility is game-specific. Transfers can be one-way or restricted by a Pokémon’s destination, game version, or available Pokédex. Moving a Pokémon can affect where it can go next, so check Nintendo’s current compatibility guidance before transferring valuable Pokémon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nintendo’s cited product pages describe HOME compatibility for FireRed and LeafGreen as planned for the future, not confirmed as operational. Do not treat those remakes as currently compatible without a newer official confirmation.

Which Pokémon game should you buy?

  • Best traditional adventure: Pokémon Sword/Shield for a conventional badge-and-League journey, or Scarlet/Violet for a more open-world structure.
  • Best introduction: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Let’s Go, Eevee! for a gentler Kanto adventure and simplified catching.
  • Best exploration: Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
  • Best newer action-focused adventure: Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Choose the Switch 2 Edition if you want its specified resolution and frame-rate improvements.
  • Best classic Kanto remake: FireRed or LeafGreen, remembering that these are digital Game Boy Advance remakes and that HOME support is listed as future compatibility.
  • Best remake with a traditional structure: Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl.
  • Best spin-off adventure: Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX for dungeon crawling, New Pokémon Snap for photography, or Detective Pikachu Returns for mystery.
  • Best competitive multiplayer: Pokémon UNITE for team battles or Pokémon Champions for Pokémon battling.
  • Best casual puzzle game: Pokémon Friends or Pokémon Café ReMix.
  • Best Switch 2 showcase: Pokémon Pokopia, with the GameCube catalogue and the enhanced Legends: Z-A Edition as additional reasons to choose the newer console.
  • Best retro collection: the Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, and—on Switch 2—GameCube Nintendo Classics, subject to regional availability and the required subscription.

Buying and subscription caveats

Physical games can be resold, lent, and collected. Digital purchases are more convenient, especially for download-only games and free-to-start titles, but remain tied to the relevant Nintendo account and storefront. Stock, regional editions, bundles, discounts, and used prices change, so compare the current physical and digital options.

DLC is not automatically included with every copy. Check separately for the Sword/Shield Expansion Pass, The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, the Legends: Z-A Mega Dimension DLC, the Pokémon Pokopia Expansion Pass, and Pokémon Friends content.

Core single-player play in the premium RPGs generally does not require Nintendo Switch Online. Online trading, battling, and multiplayer commonly do. Nintendo Switch Online plus the Expansion Pack is required for the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, and GameCube catalogues listed above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
