Stronghold 4’s published PC requirements are substantial for a strategy game. Firefly Studios’ Steam listing, checked on October 13, 2026, calls for 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 12, broadband internet and 33 GB of free storage at both specification levels. The minimum tier uses a Core i5-4670-class processor and GeForce GTX 1060 with 3 GB of VRAM; the recommended tier raises those to a Core i5-7600-class processor and GeForce RTX 2060 with 6 GB. An SSD is recommended in both tiers. Because Stronghold 4 is still pre-release, verify the live Steam listing before installing or upgrading.

How to interpret the minimum specification
Meeting the minimum list means your PC reaches Firefly’s published starting point for running the game. It does not establish a guaranteed frame rate, image quality or performance in the largest battles. The listing does not provide benchmark results, target settings or a promised number of frames per second.
“Core i5-4670 or AMD equivalent” also requires judgment: Firefly names the Intel reference processor but does not identify a single matching AMD model. A processor that is broadly equivalent in generation and performance may qualify, but a model name alone is not enough to predict results in every scenario. Check the complete CPU model, core configuration and clock behavior rather than assuming that any Core i5 or Ryzen-branded chip meets the requirement.
The same caution applies to the GTX 1060 minimum. The listing specifies 3 GB of VRAM, so a graphics card with a similar name but less memory should not be treated as an automatic match. Laptop GPUs can also perform differently from desktop versions even when their branding looks similar.
What the recommended tier tells you
The recommended tier is Firefly’s higher reference configuration, not a mandatory purchase list. If your computer already has hardware that is equal to or better than the listed CPU and GPU classes, there is no requirement to own those exact models. Equivalent hardware from another generation or manufacturer may qualify.
The jump to 6 GB of listed VRAM is important when comparing upgrade candidates. VRAM is separate from system RAM: Stronghold 4 lists 16 GB of system memory in both tiers, while the graphics cards have their own 3 GB or 6 GB memory target. Adding more system RAM does not turn a 3 GB graphics card into a 6 GB model.
No official material currently promises that the recommended tier will deliver a particular preset or resolution. Treat it as the developer’s preferred hardware baseline and wait for launch testing before drawing conclusions about ultra settings, very high resolutions or large-map performance.
Storage, SSDs and installation planning
Reserve at least 33 GB of free space for the game. That is the capacity shown on the October 13, 2026 Steam listing, not a guarantee that future patches will never require additional room. Keeping extra free capacity on the drive is sensible for downloads, updates and temporary installation files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirefly marks an SSD as recommended for both tiers. The listing does not quantify loading times or state that an SSD is required to launch. A hard-drive installation may therefore satisfy the published requirement, but it does not match the publisher’s preferred storage setup. If you are choosing where to install the game and have an SSD with enough room, use it.
Operating-system, DirectX and internet requirements
Windows edition and architecture
Both tiers require Windows 10 or Windows 11 in 64-bit form. A 32-bit Windows installation does not meet the stated requirement, even if the processor itself is capable of 64-bit operation. To check your edition and architecture, open Settings > System > About and read “System type.”
DirectX 12
DirectX 12 is listed for both configurations. Windows can contain multiple DirectX components, so seeing an older DirectX version in a legacy game does not by itself prove that your system fails this requirement. Use the Windows DirectX Diagnostic Tool by pressing Win + R, entering dxdiag, and checking the System and Display tabs. The graphics driver must also support the DirectX 12 feature set expected by the game.
Rank #2
- Memory Speed:14 Gbps.Digital Max Resolution:7680x4320
- Chipset: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060
- Video Memory: 6GB GDDR6
- Memory Interface: 192-bit

Broadband internet
The Steam listing calls for broadband internet. It does not publish a minimum download speed, latency target or an offline-play policy. Plan on an internet connection for installation, updates and whatever Steam or game services the released build requires. Do not infer from the current requirement that every mode will work offline.

- Check Windows: Open Settings > System > About. Confirm Windows 10 or 11 and a 64-bit system type.
- Check the processor and RAM: In the same page, read the processor model and installed memory. You can also open Task Manager > Performance > CPU and Memory.
- Check the graphics card: Open Task Manager > Performance > GPU or run
dxdiagand inspect the Display tab. Record the exact GPU name and dedicated VRAM. - Check DirectX: In
dxdiag, confirm the DirectX version shown on the System tab and look for driver problems on the Display tab. - Check free storage: In File Explorer, right-click the intended drive and choose Properties. Make sure substantially more than 33 GB is free so updates do not immediately fill the disk.
- Check the drive type: Windows 11 and many modern PC utilities identify whether a volume is an SSD. If Windows does not show it, consult the computer manufacturer’s specifications or the drive model.
Should you upgrade?
If you are below the minimum
Compare the shortfall component by component. A 32-bit operating system, unsupported graphics API or graphics card below the GTX 1060-class baseline is a more fundamental issue than being slightly under the processor reference. The published requirements do not say which compromises will be accepted, so do not assume that a stronger CPU can compensate for an underspecified GPU or that extra RAM fixes a graphics-card deficit.
If you meet minimum but not recommended
You are within the publisher’s baseline, but the listing provides no performance guarantee. You can wait for launch reviews and performance reports before spending money. If you do upgrade, the graphics card is the clearest listed difference between the two tiers, followed by the processor. An upgrade should be based on your complete system, power supply, case clearance and monitor resolution—not on the Stronghold 4 requirement alone.
If you are shopping for a graphics card
The RTX 2060 with 6 GB is the named recommended reference, not a compulsory model. A newer or otherwise equivalent GPU may be a better choice depending on availability and price. Verify the exact VRAM capacity, power connectors, physical dimensions and driver support before purchase. Firefly has not published a requirement for a particular manufacturer, board partner or retail model.
Release timing and what may change
Firefly’s October 8, 2026 announcement says Stronghold 4 is scheduled to release on Steam on December 7, 2026. The game is therefore still pre-release when these requirements were checked. The same announcement says a demo is available, with Free Build as the initial mode, and that Skirmish Mode is planned for Steam Next Fest beginning October 19, 2026. Demo behavior should not be treated as proof that the final game will have identical performance or requirements.
Firefly describes Stronghold 4 as a narrative prequel set in medieval England, following Penryn of Wethel. Announced content includes a 22-mission campaign and skirmish games with up to eight CPU opponents. Those features explain why CPU and GPU headroom may matter in larger scenarios, but the publisher has not supplied a benchmark that translates the content list into a specific frame rate.
Do not confuse Stronghold 4 with Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition
Another game in the series has materially different requirements. Firefly’s support information for Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition lists Windows 10/11, an Intel Core i3-6100 or equivalent, 8 GB RAM, DirectX 11 and 7 GB of storage. Those figures belong to that separate title and should not be copied into a Stronghold 4 system check.
When comparing pages, confirm that the game name is Stronghold 4, that the page is the current Steam listing, and that the publication date has not changed. Similar series names are not evidence that the games share an engine target or hardware baseline.
What to do if the game will not run
- Recheck the exact CPU and GPU model rather than relying on a family name shown by a retailer.
- Confirm that Windows is 64-bit and fully updated.
- Install current graphics drivers supplied for your GPU and restart the PC.
- Use Steam’s installed-file verification if the launcher reports missing or corrupted files.
- Make sure the installation drive has more free space than the nominal 33 GB.
- If a laptop has both integrated and discrete graphics, set Steam and the game executable to use the high-performance GPU in Windows Graphics settings.
- Record any error message, DirectX diagnostic result and GPU driver version before contacting support; those details distinguish a compatibility problem from a corrupted installation.
These steps cannot turn hardware below the published baseline into supported hardware, but they can eliminate common software and configuration causes after the minimum requirements have been met.

For a new PC purchase or upgrade, use the recommended list as the safer target: a Core i5-7600-class processor, RTX 2060-class graphics with 6 GB of VRAM, 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 12, broadband internet and 33 GB of storage on an SSD if possible. If your computer only reaches the minimum list, it meets Firefly’s stated starting point, but the company has not promised a frame rate or graphics preset. Check the live Steam page again near the December 7, 2026 release because pre-release specifications can change.
