Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo improve Xbox Cloud Gaming, first identify whether the problem is a blurry or unstable picture, delayed controls, or both. Try a wired Ethernet connection where practical; on Wi-Fi, use 5 GHz if your router and device support it. For a soft-looking image on a supported setup, Microsoft Edge’s Clarity Boost may improve visual clarity. These changes address different parts of the experience, so test them separately rather than expecting one setting to fix everything.
Tell picture problems apart from input lag
A blocky, soft, or fluctuating image points toward stream quality or network stability. Controls that respond late can involve the network, the device, the controller connection, or the display. The symptoms can overlap, but a speed-test result alone does not identify the cause of either one.

Change one thing at a time and compare in the same game, on the same device and display, and at roughly the same time of day where practical. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped the symptom you are trying to fix.
Improve the connection between your device and router
Try Ethernet first
If your cloud gaming device has an Ethernet port—or supports a compatible adapter—and a cable run is practical, connect it directly to the router and compare. Xbox recommends a wired Ethernet connection where possible. A wired connection is an option to test, not a guarantee of a particular picture quality or latency improvement. Xbox Wire’s getting-started guide also notes that capable devices can use 5 GHz Wi-Fi or 5G.

Check Wi-Fi band, signal, and congestion
If you use Wi-Fi, confirm that the device is actually connected to the router’s 5 GHz network when both the router and device support it. A router may combine bands under one network name, so check the device’s connection details or router settings rather than assuming which band it chose. Microsoft notes that 2.4 GHz wireless connections often have more latency than 5 GHz connections.
- Test from a location with a stronger signal; distance and obstructions between the device and access point can affect Wi-Fi conditions.
- Notice whether other household network use or nearby Wi-Fi congestion coincides with the problem.
- If possible, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet in the same location and during a similar play session.
These are troubleshooting checks, not promises of a specific stream result. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and home-layout guidance discusses access-point placement and wireless conditions generally.

Consider cellular 5G only on a capable device
Xbox lists 5G as another possible connection for capable devices. Whether it works well depends on the device and the connection where you play; the cited guidance does not establish that cellular 5G will outperform your home network.

On a supported setup, open Xbox Cloud Gaming in Microsoft Edge and enable Clarity Boost. Microsoft describes it as a client-side visual clarity enhancement: it can make the image look clearer on eligible setups, but it is not a service-wide resolution control. It does not fix an unstable connection or promise lower input latency. Availability can vary by device, market, and browser version. See Microsoft’s Clarity Boost in Microsoft Edge documentation for the feature details.

Check the display and input path if controls feel delayed
Reduce display delay where possible
Display latency is separate from network latency and varies by display, according to Microsoft’s game-streaming latency documentation. If you are playing on a TV, check its own settings for a gaming or low-latency mode and try it if available. This is a general display troubleshooting step; the cited Xbox guidance does not verify a result for a particular TV.
Check controller compatibility and connection
Xbox Cloud Gaming supports a range of controllers and other input methods, but compatibility depends on the device and the game. Confirm that your controller works with both before troubleshooting further. Microsoft’s getting-started guide describes supported input options.

Use a controlled troubleshooting sequence
- Describe the symptom: note whether the image is soft or blocky, the stream fluctuates, controls respond late, or more than one issue is present.
- Test a wired connection: connect by Ethernet if your device and setup allow it, then compare under similar play conditions.
- If staying on Wi-Fi, verify 5 GHz: check the actual connected band, then try a stronger-signal location and consider congestion or competing network use.
- For visual softness, test Clarity Boost: use Microsoft Edge on an eligible setup and judge picture clarity separately from control response.
- For control delay on a TV, check its low-latency settings: also verify that the controller is supported by the device and game.
- Change one factor at a time: keep the game, device, display, and approximate time consistent when comparing, where practical.
When the picture or lag still does not improve
There is no universal improvement figure established here for Ethernet, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, or Clarity Boost, and the available official guidance does not establish a current universal minimum Mbps threshold for Xbox Cloud Gaming. If the steps above do not isolate the issue, avoid treating one speed test or one unsuccessful change as proof of the cause. Record which symptom persists and which connection, device, display, and input method you used; those details make further troubleshooting more specific.
