To improve Xbox Cloud Gaming on Steam Deck, use Microsoft’s documented Microsoft Edge setup, open https://www.xbox.com/play, and troubleshoot the network first. Xbox recommends at least 20 Mbps for a stable cloud-gaming connection, wired Ethernet where practical, or 5 GHz Wi-Fi when you need a wireless connection. Those are recommendations, not guarantees: performance can still vary with your location, device, and connection conditions.
What is the most reliable way to improve Xbox Cloud Gaming on Steam Deck?
Start with the documented browser route, then make one network change at a time and test again. Xbox Cloud Gaming support on Steam Deck is listed as beta, and Steam Deck players access it through a browser at https://www.xbox.com/play, according to Xbox’s December 2025 getting-started article.

Microsoft’s Steam Deck instructions use Edge installed in Desktop mode and added to Steam. This gives you a repeatable way to open the service from Steam, but the browser setup itself cannot compensate for a weak or inconsistent internet connection. If the picture is blurry or gameplay feels delayed, first confirm you are using the intended shortcut and then check your connection.
How do I set up Microsoft Edge for Xbox Cloud Gaming?
Microsoft’s documented route is to install Edge from Discover in Desktop mode, add it to Steam, and give the Flatpak permission to read /run/udev. The following steps reflect Microsoft’s guide; menu names or behavior may change with SteamOS or Flatpak updates.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Switch to Desktop mode. Open the Steam Deck’s power menu and choose Desktop mode.
- Install Edge. Open Discover, find Microsoft Edge, and install it.
- Grant the documented device access. Open a terminal and run
flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edge. The:rosuffix grants read-only access to that path. - Add Edge to Steam. Open Steam in Desktop mode and add Microsoft Edge as a non-Steam app, so it can be launched from Steam.
- Set the launch options. In Steam’s properties for the Edge shortcut, enter the launch options below. Preserve the URL and the argument order as shown in Microsoft’s guide:
--window-size=1024,640 --force-device-scale-factor=1.25 --device-scale-factor=1.25 --kiosk "https://www.xbox.com/play" - Launch the shortcut and sign in. Open Edge through the Steam shortcut and use the Xbox Cloud Gaming page.
The window-size and scale-factor arguments set the browser’s launch presentation; the kiosk argument opens the specified page in that browser session. They are part of Microsoft’s documented setup, not a promised way to raise the cloud stream’s bitrate or cure network-related lag. If you edit the shortcut, check that the URL remains intact and that the command still contains the required arguments.
Is Edge on Steam Deck officially supported?
Microsoft says it does not actively maintain the Microsoft Edge Flatpak package and does not officially support Edge on SteamOS at this time. Treat the setup as an enthusiast configuration: SteamOS or Flatpak updates can change how it behaves, and Microsoft does not promise to troubleshoot it as an officially supported SteamOS browser.

If Edge stops opening after an update, first verify that the shortcut still points to the intended launch options and Xbox URL. If the browser itself fails, the issue may be with the Edge Flatpak or its integration with SteamOS rather than Xbox’s streaming service. Microsoft’s setup guide is the reference for the documented configuration; avoid assuming that a change to the Deck’s system software will be resolved by adjusting network settings.

Should I use Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi?
Use wired Ethernet if you can connect the Deck reliably; otherwise, use the router’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi network when the router and your location allow it. Xbox recommends wired Ethernet where possible and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for wireless play. Neither choice guarantees a particular resolution or latency.
| Connection | Stability and interference | Effort and mobility | Cost considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired Ethernet | Xbox recommends a wired connection where possible. It avoids the local wireless conditions that can affect a Wi-Fi connection. | Requires a usable wired connection at the place you play, so it is less convenient for moving around. | May require Ethernet access or an appropriate connection arrangement for the Deck. No specific hardware price is established here. |
| 5 GHz Wi-Fi | Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Results still depend on the router, distance, obstacles, and wireless conditions. | Keeps the Deck wireless, but requires a compatible router and a usable 5 GHz signal where you play. | A 5 GHz router is a relevant option if you cannot run Ethernet and your current router does not provide a suitable network. No specific purchase price is established here. |
Xbox’s recommendation is to have an internet connection speed of at least 20 Mbps for a stable cloud-gaming connection. Its FAQ also gives 20 Mbps as the best-performance recommendation for consoles, PCs, and tablets and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These figures are Xbox’s guidance, not a measured Steam Deck minimum or a promise that every connection at that speed will perform consistently.
Why is Xbox Cloud Gaming blurry or laggy on my Steam Deck?
Blurriness or lag does not point to one cause by itself. Xbox identifies internet connection, user location, device, and other factors as variables in performance, so a speed result alone cannot establish why a particular session looks or feels poor.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Confirm the route first. Check that you launched the Edge shortcut you configured and that it opens
https://www.xbox.com/play. - Check the connection against Xbox’s guidance. The recommendation is at least 20 Mbps. Treat that as a reference point, not a diagnosis or guarantee.
- Try a wired connection if practical. If Ethernet is not practical, connect to the router’s 5 GHz network rather than 2.4 GHz when available and usable at your location.
- Improve the wireless conditions. Move closer to the router, reduce obstructions between it and the Deck, and avoid congested wireless conditions where possible.
- Test again at another time or place. Xbox lists location and connection conditions among performance factors, so a change in result can help distinguish a persistent setup issue from conditions specific to one session.
- Only then consider another browser experience. Better xCloud is an optional third-party project, not the baseline required by Microsoft’s setup.
For a useful comparison, change one thing at a time: for example, keep the same browser shortcut and test once on Wi-Fi, then again on Ethernet if available. This will not provide a controlled benchmark, but it makes it easier to see whether a specific connection change helps in your own setup. Do not infer a universal improvement from one session.
Is Better xCloud a good alternative to Edge?
Better xCloud is a free, open-source third-party project that presents itself as improving the xbox.com/play experience and lists Linux and SteamOS, including Steam Deck, support. It is an optional route rather than Microsoft’s official client or a prerequisite for cloud gaming on the Deck.
| Option | Support status | Setup and update considerations | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Edge shortcut | Microsoft documents the setup, but says it does not actively maintain the Edge Flatpak or officially support Edge on SteamOS. | Requires Desktop mode, Edge from Discover, Steam integration, a Flatpak permission change, and launch options. SteamOS or Flatpak updates may affect behavior. | Use as the documented baseline when you want to follow Microsoft’s Steam Deck instructions. |
| Better xCloud | Third-party, open-source project; it lists Linux and SteamOS support. It is not Microsoft’s official client. | Its installation and current behavior are governed by the project’s own documentation; check that documentation before installing because details can change. | Consider it if you specifically want to try its additional experience, while keeping the official Edge route as a point of comparison. |
Do not install a third-party option just to test whether your connection is fast enough. First establish whether the documented Edge route works and whether Ethernet or a better-positioned 5 GHz connection changes the result. If you decide to try Better xCloud, consult the project’s current documentation rather than relying on old installation directions.

What did Xbox’s Linux streaming improvements change?
On November 3, 2022, Steam Deck HQ reported a statement from a verified Xbox employee announcing performance improvements for Xbox Cloud Gaming in browsers on Linux and ChromeOS. The employee said users could expect higher resolution and smoother streaming. This is useful historical context, but it is not a current controlled benchmark for every Steam Deck configuration and does not quantify the effect of a particular router, browser setting, or Deck setup.
There is no current controlled Steam Deck benchmark here that measures the exact gain from Ethernet versus 5 GHz Wi-Fi, Edge versus Better xCloud, or a particular launch option. Use Xbox’s network recommendations as practical guidance and judge changes in your own conditions rather than expecting a fixed resolution or latency increase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which settings should I change first?
Keep the troubleshooting order simple: verify the official browser route, check whether the connection meets Xbox’s recommendation, then improve the connection before experimenting with optional software. This keeps browser setup problems separate from network variability.

- Use Ethernet if practical; otherwise select 5 GHz Wi-Fi when available and usable.
- Reduce distance and obstacles between the Deck and router, and avoid congested wireless conditions.
- Test again at a different time or location if performance remains inconsistent.
- Consider Better xCloud only after establishing how the documented Edge route performs.
If the shortcut no longer opens correctly, revisit its launch options and the Edge setup before changing several network variables at once. If the shortcut opens but the stream remains inconsistent, focus on the connection and circumstances of the session rather than assuming the launch arguments control stream quality.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a result above 20 Mbps mean my stream will always be stable?
No. Xbox describes 20 Mbps as a recommendation, while also identifying location, device, and other connection conditions as performance factors. A speed result is one useful check, not a guarantee or a complete explanation for a poor session.
Recommended Free Tools
Do the Edge launch options force a higher cloud-stream resolution?
The documented arguments specify the browser window, display scaling, and page to open. The available guidance does not establish that changing those arguments raises the service’s stream resolution.
Is Xbox’s 2022 Linux browser announcement a performance guarantee for my Deck?
No. The November 3, 2022 report described an announced improvement for Linux and ChromeOS browsers, but it did not provide a controlled result for every Deck, location, or network setup.
