The fastest way to improve Amazon Prime Video is to match your playback device to the quality you want, then stabilize the network feeding it. A Fire TV Stick can play supported titles at up to Ultra HD with up to 5.1 surround sound or Dolby Atmos, while computer browsers top out at HD and stereo. Android devices are listed up to Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos; iPhone and iPad are listed up to HD and stereo. After choosing suitable hardware, restart and update your network equipment, use separate profiles for each viewer, enable subtitles or Dialogue Boost when needed, and evaluate the U.S. Prime Video Ultra tier if you want ad-free on-demand viewing, 4K, more streams, and more downloads. Actual quality still depends on the title, bandwidth, and device capabilities.
What makes Prime Video look and sound better?
Prime Video quality has three ceilings: the title’s available version, your internet connection, and the device or app doing the playback. A 4K television cannot create a 4K stream if the title or playback device is limited to HD, and a premium subscription cannot compensate for an unstable Wi-Fi connection.

- Bandwidth and stability: congestion, weak Wi-Fi, router faults, or a broken DNS path can force quality down or cause buffering.
- Device and operating system: Amazon’s compatibility listings set different maximums for Fire TV Stick, mobile devices, and browsers.
- Plan: in the United States, Prime Video Ultra adds features beyond the standard Prime Video benefit, but it does not turn every program into an ad-free or 4K title.
Start by fixing the lowest ceiling. If you watch mainly on a computer browser, changing browsers or buying a 4K television will not remove the browser limit described below; use a compatible streaming device or supported mobile setup instead.
Which device gives the best Prime Video quality?
For a television-based setup, a Fire TV Stick is the clearest all-around choice in Amazon’s device matrix: it supports Prime Video up to Ultra HD and up to 5.1 surround sound or Dolby Atmos, along with subtitles, audio description, live streaming, and profiles. Android devices also reach Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos in Amazon’s listing, while Apple mobile devices and computer browsers have lower maximums.

|---|---|---|---|
| Fire TV Stick | Up to Ultra HD | Up to 5.1 surround sound or Dolby Atmos | Subtitles, audio description, live streaming, and profiles |
| Android devices | Up to Ultra HD | Dolby Atmos | Exact support still depends on the model, title, and app environment |

Use the Fire TV Stick or a supported Android device when your priority is the highest listed Prime Video picture and sound. Connect the device directly to the television or receiver where possible, and verify that the television, receiver, and cable path also support the format you intend to use. The Prime Video app can only output what the entire chain accepts.
How do I get 4K or Ultra HD playback?
Use a device with an Ultra HD listing, choose a title that is offered in Ultra HD, and provide a stable connection. Fire TV Stick and supported Android devices are the relevant device classes in Amazon’s published matrix; iPhone, iPad, and computer browsers are listed below that level.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Choose compatible hardware. For a television, use a Fire TV Stick connected to a 4K display. On mobile, use an Android device whose model and app support the required format.
- Check the title’s available version. A title may be offered in HD even when your hardware and plan can handle Ultra HD. Do not assume that every episode, rental, purchase, or live program has the same formats.
- Remove network bottlenecks. Restart the modem and router, move the streaming device nearer to the access point or use a wired connection when practical, and stop competing high-bandwidth activity during playback.
- Update the software. Install current firmware on the streaming device and current operating-system updates on the phone, television, or computer.
- Check the on-screen quality indicator. If the title remains HD or repeatedly drops quality, test another known Ultra HD title. This separates title availability from a device or network problem.
Ultra HD is a maximum, not a guarantee. Amazon says quality also depends on the title, bandwidth, and device capability, so a slower or unstable connection can prevent a compatible title from staying at its highest resolution.
Why is Prime Video buffering, and how do I fix it?
Follow Amazon’s troubleshooting order rather than changing several settings at once. The sequence starts with the connected device and ends with a specific DNS check through your internet provider.
- Confirm that the playback device is online. Open another network-dependent app or the device’s network settings. If the device is offline, Prime Video cannot establish a reliable stream.
- Re-enter the Wi-Fi password. A saved but incorrect password can leave a device appearing configured while it has no usable connection.
- Restart the playback device. Fully restart the Fire TV Stick, television, phone, tablet, or computer instead of merely leaving the app.
- Restart the modem and router. Power them down, allow the restart cycle to complete, and reconnect the playback device before testing Prime Video again.
- Update firmware or the operating system. Install available updates for the streaming device, television, phone, tablet, or computer. Out-of-date software can cause compatibility and playback errors.
- Contact the internet provider about DNS traffic on port 53. Amazon specifically calls this out when the preceding checks do not resolve connection errors. Ask whether DNS requests on port 53 are being blocked, redirected, or degraded on your connection.
How can I tell whether Wi-Fi or Prime Video is at fault?
Test the same device with another online video service and test Prime Video on a second device. If every service fails on one network, investigate the router or provider. If only one title fails while other Prime Video titles play normally, the issue may be title-specific availability rather than your connection.

What should I change first when quality keeps dropping?
Change one variable at a time: restart the network, update software, then test the same title again. If the device is a computer browser, remember that Amazon lists browser playback at no more than HD and stereo on Windows and macOS, and standard definition on other operating systems; a quality drop within that ceiling is a different problem from a browser-imposed maximum.

Use a playback device and audio system that support the desired format, then select the available track during playback. Fire TV Stick is listed for up to 5.1 surround sound or Dolby Atmos, and Android devices are listed for Dolby Atmos. iPhone, iPad, and computer browsers are listed for stereo.
Turn on Dialogue Boost
On a supported title, open the captions or audio menu during playback and choose Dialogue Boost at Medium or High. Amazon says the feature can be activated during playback on the web, Amazon devices, and mobile devices. It is title- and device-dependent, so the option may not appear everywhere.
Choose an alternate audio track
Open the audio menu while the program is playing and select the available language or descriptive track. A title may include an alternate track on one device but not another. Live events currently do not have audio-description tracks, even though many on-demand titles do.
Check the whole audio path
If Atmos or surround sound does not appear, verify the receiver or soundbar input, television audio settings, and the connection between them. A device can support Atmos while the television, receiver, or cable path passes only stereo. Keep the output mode consistent while testing so you know which change made a difference.

How do I turn on subtitles or audio description?
Start playback, open the captions or audio controls, and choose the subtitle language, alternate audio track, or audio-description track that is offered. Amazon notes that availability varies by title and device, so a missing option is not necessarily a fault with your account.
- Subtitles: select the captions control and choose a listed language.
- Audio description: open the audio-track list and select the descriptive track when one is available.
- Dialogue Boost: in supported titles, choose Medium or High from the audio menu during playback.
- Live programming: do not expect audio description for live events at present.
For a household with different accessibility needs, profiles keep each viewer’s recommendations and progress separate, while the playback controls remain available on supported titles.
How can I remove Prime Video ads?
In the United States, Amazon’s 2026 announcement names the paid upgrade Prime Video Ultra and prices it at $4.99 per month. Amazon describes it as adding ad-free viewing, UHD/4K, Dolby Atmos, up to five concurrent streams, and up to 100 downloads.
| Feature | Prime Video benefit included with Prime | Prime Video Ultra in the U.S. |
|---|---|---|
| Concurrent streams | Four | Up to five |
| Downloads | 50 | Up to 100 |
| Picture and sound additions named by Amazon | Depends on title and device | UHD/4K and Dolby Atmos |
| Price | Included with the applicable Prime benefit | $4.99 per month in the U.S. |
Amazon’s help material also uses the name Ad Free for the advertising upgrade. The qualification matters: live television, sports, and selected free ad-supported programs can still contain advertising. The announcement likewise says some live, sports, and other ad-supported content may continue to show ads, so Ultra is not a promise that every Prime Video stream is commercial-free.
Recommended Free Tools
Ultra is a subscription choice, not a hardware device. It can raise the plan’s limits, but you still need a compatible playback device and a title offered in the format you want. Availability, name, and price outside the United States are not established by the U.S. announcement, so check the plan shown in your own marketplace before subscribing.

How do profiles improve a family account?
Profiles prevent one viewer’s activity from reshaping everyone else’s recommendations. Amazon says profiles separate recommendations, season progress, and Watchlists, with up to six profiles on one account.
- Open the profile selector in Prime Video.
- Choose the option to add or manage a profile.
- Create one profile for each regular viewer, using distinct names so the correct profile is easy to select.
- Switch to the appropriate profile before browsing, adding a title to a Watchlist, or continuing a season.
Set up profiles before paying for another subscription or buying another streaming device for the household. Separate recommendations and progress often solve the problem that appears to be a need for a second account.
How do downloads and simultaneous streams affect the setup?
Downloads are useful when a connection is unreliable or unavailable, while simultaneous-stream limits matter when several people watch at once. In the U.S. Ultra announcement, Amazon lists up to 100 downloads and five concurrent streams; the included Prime Video benefit is listed with 50 downloads and four streams.
- Use downloads for travel, weak hotel Wi-Fi, or a device that repeatedly loses its connection.
- Use profiles to keep downloaded and watched content organized by person.
- Do not treat the stream count as a guarantee of picture quality: five concurrent HD streams can still strain a home connection, and a single unstable stream can buffer.
- Remember that the figures are plan allowances and may differ by marketplace or future plan revision.
Which upgrade should I make first?
Choose the smallest change that addresses your actual limitation.
| Your problem | First change to try | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Computer video looks soft | Move television viewing to a Fire TV Stick or supported Android device | Amazon lists browsers at HD/stereo on Windows and macOS, and standard definition on other operating systems |
| Picture pauses or quality fluctuates | Run Amazon’s device, Wi-Fi, restart, update, and DNS-port-53 checks | These steps address the connection path before you spend money |
| Speech is difficult to hear | Try Dialogue Boost, then an alternate audio track | Medium or High Dialogue Boost is available on supported titles and devices |
| Household recommendations are mixed | Create separate profiles | Profiles separate recommendations, season progress, and Watchlists |
| You want more streams, downloads, 4K, and fewer on-demand ads in the U.S. | Compare the $4.99-per-month Ultra upgrade with your usage | Ultra lists five streams, 100 downloads, UHD/4K, Dolby Atmos, and ad-free viewing, with stated ad exceptions |
What should I check when a feature is missing?
- No 4K option: confirm the title offers Ultra HD and that you are not using an iPhone, iPad, or computer browser, which Amazon lists at HD or lower.
- No Atmos option: confirm the device, receiver, and title support it; iPhone, iPad, and browsers are listed for stereo.
- No Dialogue Boost: try another supported title and check during playback on the web, an Amazon device, or a mobile device.
- No audio description: check another title; availability varies, and live events currently lack audio-description tracks.
- Ads remain after upgrading: verify that you are in the U.S. plan described by Amazon and that the program is not live TV, sports, or another ad-supported selection excluded from ad-free treatment.
- Everyone still sees mixed recommendations: switch profiles before watching and confirm that each person is using the intended profile.
What is the practical best setup for most viewers?
For a living-room setup, use a Fire TV Stick on a capable 4K television, keep the router and device firmware current, and use a separate profile for each regular viewer. Select an Ultra HD title, choose the best available audio track, and enable Dialogue Boost or subtitles when useful. If buffering persists, follow Amazon’s full connection sequence and ask the provider about DNS traffic on port 53 before changing plans. In the U.S., consider Ultra only when its five-stream, 100-download, UHD/4K, Dolby Atmos, and ad-free-on-demand features justify $4.99 per month, remembering the live and ad-supported exceptions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Prime Video Ultra make every title 4K?
No. Ultra adds UHD/4K capability to the plan, but the individual title must also be offered in Ultra HD and your playback device must support it. Amazon still identifies title, bandwidth, and device capability as quality limits.
Can I use an iPhone or iPad for Dolby Atmos Prime Video?
Amazon’s device listing places iPhone and iPad playback at HD and stereo. For the highest listed Prime Video picture and Atmos support, use a compatible Fire TV Stick or supported Android device instead.
Why are my recommendations still wrong after I created profiles?
Profiles only separate activity when viewers select the correct profile before browsing and watching. If someone watches under another person’s profile, that viewing can affect the wrong recommendations, season progress, and Watchlist.
Will downloaded Prime Video titles play without internet?
Downloads are intended for viewing when a connection is unavailable or unreliable, but the number of downloads allowed depends on the plan. Amazon’s U.S. figures list 50 downloads with the Prime Video benefit and up to 100 with Ultra.
Why does Dialogue Boost not appear on a program?
Dialogue Boost is title- and device-dependent. Amazon says to activate it during playback on supported titles on the web, Amazon devices, and mobile devices, so the control may be absent from unsupported content or playback environments.
