Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →In the original PC release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, carry weight is called encumbrance, and your maximum is five times your Strength. The game’s console supports changing actor values, but the available references do not verify a specific original-game command for setting encumbrance directly. The reliable approach is to raise Strength; do not assume a command for Oblivion Remastered works in the original game.
How carry weight works in original Oblivion
Your maximum encumbrance is five times your Strength attribute. For example, a character with 50 Strength has a 250-point carrying limit. The original game’s PC manual uses the term “encumbrance” and displays item weight in the inventory, where you can check how much you are carrying. See the Oblivion PC manual. The formula is also documented in the community-edited Oblivion encumbrance reference.
In the original-game reference, exceeding the limit roots your character in place until you remove enough weight. Do not conflate that description with Remastered: Bethesda’s separate Remastered guidance says over-encumbrance prevents fast travel.
Can you set encumbrance directly with a PC console command?
The console command reference documents the general actor-value syntax Player.SetAV <Ability/Attribute> <#>, but that alone does not establish a working command for directly setting encumbrance in the original release. An older third-party how-to discusses a carry-weight cheat, but it is not strong verification for an exact command. Avoid copying a command from a Remastered guide or presenting unverified syntax as guaranteed.

- Radiant AI - This groundbreaking AI system gives Oblivion's characters full 24/7 schedules and the ability to make their own choices based on the world around them. Non-player characters eat, sleep, and complete goals all on their own.
- New Lands to Explore - In the Shivering Isles expansion, see a world created in Sheogorath's own image, one divided between Mania and Dementia and unlike anything you've experienced in Oblivion.
- Challenging New Foes - Battle the denizens of Shivering Isles, a land filled with hideous insects, Flesh Atronachs, skeletal Shambles, amphibeous Grummites, and many more.
If you choose to experiment with a command from another source, save first and confirm that it explicitly targets the original PC release. The general console reference is available at Oblivion console commands; it should not be treated as proof of a direct encumbrance command.
Ways to increase your carrying limit
| Approach | What it changes | What is established for the original PC game | Practical caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raise Strength | Raises the attribute that determines maximum encumbrance. | The original-game reference gives the limit as five times Strength. | Strength also affects character mechanics beyond carrying capacity. |
| Use Feather or Fortify Strength effects | Bethesda describes these as temporary ways to increase capacity in Remastered. | That support page is for Remastered; it does not establish exact spell names, availability, or steps for the original release. | Check that the effect exists and is available in your original-game setup before relying on it. |
| Set encumbrance directly through the console | Would change the limit directly if a valid command exists. | The cited general console documentation does not verify exact original-game syntax. | Do not use a Remastered command as an original-game instruction. |
Bethesda’s Remastered tips and tricks describe Strength, Feather, and Fortify Strength in that edition. Its guidance is useful for understanding the broad mechanic, not for confirming original-release spell details or console commands.

What to do when you are already over the limit
For the original PC game, remove or store enough items to bring your inventory below its encumbrance limit. The inventory’s displayed weights help identify what is contributing to the total. If your goal is a higher limit rather than a lighter inventory, raising Strength changes the governing attribute; a direct encumbrance console command should only be used if you can verify the exact syntax for the original release.
