Add more gunpowder to the firework rocket recipe. In the ordinary Java Edition recipe, one, two, or three gunpowder produces progressively longer flight duration; three is the normal crafting maximum. A firework star changes the rocket’s explosion effect, not how long it flies.
How to make a firework rocket fly longer
- Open a crafting grid.
- Place one paper and the amount of gunpowder you want to use in the grid: one, two, or three.
- Take the crafted rockets. More gunpowder gives them a longer flight duration, and three gunpowder is the ordinary recipe maximum.
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes define the rocket’s flight_duration field by the number of gunpowder used; its documented implicit default is 1. Read the Java Edition 1.20.5 notes. The recipe reference likewise describes the ordinary maximum of three gunpowder. See the firework rocket recipe.

What one, two, or three gunpowder changes
| Gunpowder in the recipe | Result |
|---|---|
| One | Shortest of these ordinary crafted durations; the documented implicit default is 1 in Java Edition. |
| Two | Longer flight duration than a rocket made with one gunpowder. |
| Three | Longest duration available from the ordinary recipe. |
The cited sources establish the relative increase, not a reliable duration in seconds for every edition and situation, so a precise seconds figure should not be assumed.
Firework stars do not increase flight time
A firework star adds an explosion effect to a rocket. It does not substitute for extra gunpowder or increase the rocket’s flight duration. A rocket crafted without a star has no explosion effect. Use gunpowder when your goal is more flight time; add a star only if you want an explosion.

Using longer-duration rockets with an Elytra
When you use a firework rocket to boost an Elytra flight, a longer-duration rocket keeps the boost going longer. Minecraft’s Java Edition 1.11.1 development notes state: “Longer flight duration on the rocket makes the boost last longer.” See the Java Edition 1.11.1 notes.
Edition scope
The version-specific official documentation cited above describes Java Edition. The ordinary recipe guidance is also documented by the community recipe reference, but the sources cited here do not establish that every edition-specific detail or edge behavior is identical in Bedrock Edition. For Bedrock, check the recipe and behavior in the edition you are playing rather than relying on Java-specific field documentation.
