There are two supported paths. Ubuntu’s package manager is the safer default for a module that exists in your Ubuntu release: it records the files, resolves operating-system dependencies, and receives updates through the normal Ubuntu workflow. CPAN is the fallback when no suitable Ubuntu package exists, or when an application needs a newer CPAN release than the Ubuntu repository carries.

The word “module” can describe a Perl namespace such as Module::Name, while Ubuntu packages and CPAN often use distribution names. Their names do not always match exactly. Search for the namespace, confirm the package’s description, and do not assume that every CPAN distribution has a Debian or Ubuntu package.
| Method | When it fits | Where it installs | Dependency and update behavior | Build-tool requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
apt |
Ubuntu supplies the required module in your release | Normally the system Perl installation | Files and dependencies are tracked by Ubuntu’s package manager; updates follow the Ubuntu release | The package is delivered through Ubuntu; you normally do not compile it locally |
cpanm (cpanminus) |
The repository lacks the module, or you need a newer CPAN release | System-wide when permitted, or a user-local Perl directory | Installs from CPAN and resolves CPAN dependencies; release freshness follows CPAN rather than the Ubuntu archive | XS modules can require make, a C compiler, and library headers |
| User-local or isolated Perl | A dependency belongs to one application or you must avoid changing system Perl | A user-owned directory or a separate Perl installation | Keeps application dependencies separate from system packages; you manage the application environment independently | The same XS build requirements apply when a dependency contains C code |
Exact package availability and package versions vary by Ubuntu release. Check the release you are actually running instead of copying a package name from an older guide.

1. Confirm that Perl is installed
Most Linux distributions provide Perl through their package manager. Check the interpreter before searching for modules:
perl -v
A successful command prints the Perl version and build information. If the shell reports that perl cannot be found, install Perl from Ubuntu’s repositories first, then repeat the check. Do not start with CPAN while the interpreter itself is missing.
Also record which executable your shell is using when more than one Perl may be present:
which perl
This matters later if you use Perlbrew, a user-local installation, a virtual environment, or another separately managed Perl. The installer and the program that loads the module must refer to the same Perl installation.
2. Search Ubuntu’s repositories
Refresh the package index before searching, particularly on a newly installed system or after changing Ubuntu releases:
sudo apt update
Search by the module namespace and by likely Debian package wording:

Ubuntu Perl packages commonly follow a Debian-style pattern such as lib<module-name>-perl, but the exact spelling, punctuation, and word order must be confirmed. Treat that pattern as a search aid, not as a package name you can safely invent. Use the package description and Ubuntu’s package index to verify that the result provides the module you need.

- Check that the package belongs to the Ubuntu release you are running.
- Read the description for the namespace or distribution you require.
- Confirm that the candidate is not merely a similarly named module.
- Notice whether the repository version satisfies your application’s minimum or maximum version requirement.
If the search returns no suitable result, that does not prove that the module is unavailable on CPAN. It means Ubuntu does not provide a matching package in the repositories you currently have enabled.
3. Install a repository package with apt
Once you have confirmed the exact package name, install it with:
sudo apt install lib<module-name>-perl
Replace the example with the package name returned by your search. sudo is needed because apt writes to system directories and updates the operating system’s package database. Apt will display the packages it plans to install and any additional dependencies; review that list before accepting.
Using apt gives Ubuntu ownership of the installed files. That makes upgrades, removal, and dependency bookkeeping predictable, and it avoids placing files from a separate CPAN installation over files managed by the operating system. For a server or workstation whose Perl programs all use the distribution Perl, this is usually the least surprising choice.
4. Verify the module with the same Perl
Do not treat a successful installer message as the final test. Ask Perl to load the namespace and print the installed version:
perl -MModule::Name -e 'print $Module::Name::VERSION, "n"'
Replace Module::Name in both places with the namespace you installed. A version number followed by a newline confirms that this Perl can locate and compile the module. Some modules do not expose a useful $VERSION; in that case, a successful load without an error still confirms that Perl found the code.
Run the verification from the same account and environment that will run your application. A module installed for one Perl executable can appear to be missing when a different executable, container, service account, or shell configuration starts the program.

5. Install cpanminus when apt has no suitable package
When Ubuntu does not provide the module you need, install cpanminus (the executable is cpanm) from Ubuntu first:
sudo apt update && sudo apt install cpanminus
Ubuntu describes cpanminus as a CPAN module installer. Its purpose is deliberately narrow: the Ubuntu manpage describes it as “a script to get, unpack, build and install modules from CPAN and does nothing else.” It can accept a module name, a distribution archive, a local path, an HTTP URL, or a Git repository.
Installing cpanminus with apt does not install the module you want; it installs the tool that will retrieve and build that module. Keep those two operations separate so that an error from cpanminus is not confused with a missing Ubuntu package.
6. Install the CPAN distribution with cpanm
Use the module namespace as the normal input:
cpanm Module::Name
cpanm resolves the distribution, downloads it, unpacks it, builds it, and installs it along with CPAN prerequisites. Read the output rather than stopping at the last line: it identifies the directory being used, the dependency that failed, and whether the failure occurred during download, configuration, compilation, testing, or installation.
A system-wide CPAN installation may need elevated privileges because system Perl directories are normally writable only by root. Before using sudo cpanm, decide whether a system-wide installation is really appropriate. It can place files outside apt’s package database, so the operating system will not manage those files as part of an Ubuntu package upgrade or removal.
For an application dependency, a user-local or isolated installation is usually safer. cpanminus documents local::lib behavior for situations in which the system Perl directories are not writable. A local::lib setup gives the account its own module directory instead of requiring root access. Perlbrew is another approach: Perl.org describes it as a way to separate a Perl installation from the system Perl, which is useful when an application needs its own interpreter and dependency set.
7. Keep project dependencies out of system Perl
System Perl is shared by the operating system and by every program that invokes it. A CPAN module installed globally can therefore affect unrelated scripts, while an apt upgrade can change the versions available to all of them. For a single application, isolate the dependency whenever practical.

Use a user-local module directory
Choose this when you can keep the system Perl executable but need modules in a directory owned by your account. cpanminus can use local::lib when system directories are not writable. Follow the installer’s output and ensure the environment used to start the application includes the local library path.

Use a separate Perl installation
Choose an isolated Perl when the application needs a different interpreter version as well as separate modules. Perlbrew is designed for this separation. After switching to the intended Perl, install the modules with cpanm and run the verification command again; otherwise you may verify one interpreter while the application uses another.
Keep one installation strategy per dependency
Do not install the same module through apt and CPAN merely because both commands are available. Decide which copy should own the dependency, record that decision with the application, and make sure perl, cpanm, and the application resolve to the same environment.
8. Fix compilation failures
Some CPAN modules contain XS code, which is Perl’s interface to C-based code. Those modules must be compiled on your machine. The CPAN installation guide warns that XS modules require a C compiler, and Ubuntu’s cpanminus package metadata recommends build tools such as make and a C compiler.
Recognize a missing toolchain
Errors mentioning a missing compiler, make, a linker, or a failed C compilation indicate a build prerequisite rather than a Perl namespace problem. Install the missing development tools through apt, then rerun the same cpanm command. A common starting point on Ubuntu is:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →sudo apt update
sudo apt install make gcc
The exact failure may also name a system library header, such as a file ending in .h. Install the Ubuntu development package that supplies that header, using the package search and description to identify it. The required header package depends on the module; do not install an unrelated development library simply because its name looks similar.
Retry after correcting prerequisites
Once the compiler, make, and required headers are present, run:

cpanm Module::Name
Read the first meaningful error in the new output. Later “failed” lines often report consequences of the original missing tool or header. If the module still fails, preserve the complete build log and identify whether the failure is now in configuration, compilation, tests, or permissions; each stage points to a different remedy.
Separate build errors from permission errors
A “permission denied” message while writing to a Perl library directory is not a compiler failure. It means the chosen installation scope is not writable by your account. Either use the documented user-local/local::lib arrangement or deliberately install into a system location with the required privileges. Do not fix a permissions problem by repeatedly reinstalling compilers.
9. Diagnose “Can’t locate” and other loading errors
If cpanm reports success but your program says it cannot locate the module, inspect the environment before reinstalling. Perl searches the directories in its @INC array. A user-local installation is invisible when that directory is not in @INC, and a different Perl executable can have a completely different search path.
Inspect the active search path
perl -e 'print join("n", @INC), "n"'
Compare the printed directories with the location shown by cpanm. Check whether PERL5LIB changes the search path for the shell, service, cron job, or deployment process that launches the application. A value set in your interactive shell may not be present for a system service.
Verify the executable and installer pair
which perl
which cpanm
These commands show which programs your shell selects. If they belong to different Perl installations, invoke cpanm from the intended environment and repeat the version test with that environment’s perl. This is especially important after using Perlbrew or any user-local setup.
Check the namespace exactly
Perl namespaces are case-sensitive, and a distribution’s name is not always the namespace you load. Use the module name documented by the application in the -M verification command. Installing a similarly named distribution will not make a different namespace available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute10. A repeatable installation checklist
- Run
perl -vand confirm which Perl executable is active. - Refresh Ubuntu’s index with

perl -MModule::Name -e 'print $Module::Name::VERSION, "n"'. - If no suitable package exists, install cpanminus using
sudo apt update && sudo apt install cpanminus. - Run
cpanm Module::Namefrom the same Perl environment your application will use. - For project-only dependencies, use a user-local/local::lib setup or an isolated Perl rather than changing system Perl unnecessarily.
- If compilation fails, install the missing
make, C compiler, or library headers, then retry. - If loading fails, compare cpanm’s destination with
@INC,PERL5LIB, and the activeperlexecutable.
Which option should you use?
Choose apt when Ubuntu has the module and the application can use the release’s packaged version. This keeps the dependency inside Ubuntu’s update and dependency system and is the most maintainable option for shared system software.
Choose cpanm when the repository lacks the module or its version is too old for your application. Prefer a user-local or isolated Perl when the dependency belongs to one project, when you need to protect system Perl, or when separate projects require different versions. Expect XS dependencies to require a local compiler toolchain and development headers regardless of whether the rest of the installation is system-wide or user-local.
