To join an SCP: Secret Laboratory server, install and launch the game through Steam, open the in-game Server Browser, review a server’s information and rules, then select Join. The browser includes Official, Favorites, History and Friends tabs, filters for availability and whitelist status, and a Direct Connect option when you already know a server’s IP address.

You can also connect through Steam’s own server list at Steam > View > Game Servers > Favorites. Add the server’s IP address and port, then choose Connect. The normal player game is Steam App ID 700330; the separate dedicated-server application, App ID 996560, is for operating a server rather than joining one.

What you need before joining
The player version of SCP: Secret Laboratory is distributed through Steam as App ID 700330. Install that game, sign in to the Steam account that owns it, and launch it from your Library. You do not need to install the separate dedicated-server application just to play; App ID 996560 is the dedicated server package used by server operators.
Most players only need the game and an internet connection. If a friend, host or community has given you a server address, keep the complete endpoint available. It may consist of an IP address alone or an IP address followed by a port, such as an address supplied in the form IP:port. Enter the port exactly when the operator provides one; do not substitute a different port.

Servers are created and maintained by third parties. Their rules, plugins, moderation standards, whitelist requirements and preferred play styles can differ substantially. Treat the server description and any linked rules as part of the joining process, not as optional reading.
Join through the in-game Server Browser
The in-game browser is the standard route when you want to discover a server rather than connect to a known address.

- Open Server Browser. Select Server Browser from the game’s main interface. Northwood’s technical documentation describes this screen as the place to find verified listings and use Direct Connect.
- Choose a discovery tab. Use Official for the official-server listing, Favorites for servers you saved, History for servers you previously joined, or Friends to find servers where your Steam friends are currently playing. The browser also provides Refresh and Rejoin functions in the current 10.0.0 interface.
- Apply filters. Hide empty servers if you want an active match, hide full servers if you need an immediate slot, and hide whitelisted servers when you do not have permission to enter them. Filters narrow the list; they do not grant access to a server that requires approval.
- Select a listing and inspect it. Read the displayed server information, including its population, region or ping indicators, operation type, plugins, whitelist status and stated rules. Open any linked rules page before committing to the connection.
- Join the server. Choose the server’s join command and wait for the connection process. If the server fills up, becomes unavailable or rejects your account because of a whitelist, return to the browser and select another listing or resolve the access requirement with that community.
Use Refresh when a listing appears stale or a server you expect to see is missing. Use Rejoin when you want to return to the last server without searching through the list again.
How to evaluate a server before connecting
A server name alone does not tell you how the session will play. Compare the information exposed by the listing and the community’s rules before joining.

The verified list is publicly available in-game and through servers.scpslgame.com. A verified listing indicates that the server appears in the verified-server system; it does not make every community rule identical or guarantee a particular play style.
Direct Connect: joining with an IP address and port
Direct Connect is the quickest method when a host has already sent you a server endpoint or when the server does not appear in your browser results.
- Launch SCP: Secret Laboratory from Steam.
- Open Server Browser from the main interface.
- Select Direct Connect.
- Enter the server’s IP address exactly as supplied by the operator.
- If the operator supplied a port, include it in the format the game accepts, normally the address followed by a colon and the port number.
- Submit the address and wait for the connection attempt. If it fails, verify every character of the address and port with the operator before trying again.
Direct Connect does not bypass a whitelist, password or community permission system. It only tells the game which endpoint to contact. You still have to satisfy the server’s access rules, and the operator must have the server running and reachable.
Connect through Steam’s Game Servers list
Steam provides a second route for a known IP address and port. This is useful when you cannot locate the listing in the in-game browser but have a complete endpoint.

- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Choose View in the top menu, then select Game Servers.
- Open the Favorites tab.
- Choose the option to add a server and enter the server’s IP address and port.
- Save the entry, select it in the Favorites list, and click Connect.
Use the same endpoint supplied by the server operator. An IP address without the required port can point Steam at the wrong service, while a mistyped port can make a working server appear unreachable. If Steam cannot connect, try the game’s Direct Connect field with the same address and ask the operator to confirm the endpoint.
How to join a friend’s server
There are two practical ways to join a friend. First, open the in-game Server Browser and check the Friends tab. It can surface servers on which your friends are playing, provided the server is discoverable to you.
If the server does not appear there, ask your friend for the exact IP address and port. Open Server Browser > Direct Connect and paste the endpoint. You can also add the same address under Steam > View > Game Servers > Favorites and connect from Steam.
A friend’s presence does not automatically provide access. The server may be full, restricted to a whitelist or governed by rules that require separate permission. In those cases, your friend or the community staff must explain how to obtain access; repeatedly retrying the connection will not remove the restriction.

Joining a hosted private server
A privately hosted server normally gives players connection information directly. The host may post the address in a community channel, send it to invited players or provide it through a hosting panel. Copy the complete IP address and port, then use Direct Connect or Steam’s Favorites list.

If the host changes the endpoint, replace the old Favorites entry rather than continuing to use a stale address.

The server is not in the browser
Refresh the browser first and check the active filters. A filter that hides empty, full or whitelisted servers can remove the listing from view. Then check the Official, Favorites, History and Friends tabs individually. If you have the endpoint, skip discovery and use Direct Connect or Steam’s Game Servers Favorites list.
The server is full
A full server cannot accept another player until a slot opens. Use the browser’s full-server filter to hide it and choose another listing, or wait and use Rejoin after a slot becomes available. Do not interpret a full listing as a wrong IP address; it confirms that the server is visible but currently has no available slot.

The server is whitelisted
A whitelist is an access control set by the server community. Hide whitelisted servers while browsing if you do not have permission, or contact the operator for the required approval. Direct Connect and Steam’s Favorites route cannot override a whitelist.

The Friends tab does not show the server
The tab is a discovery aid, not a guarantee that every friend-hosted session will appear. Ask your friend for the IP address and port and connect manually. Check that you copied both values and that your friend is still connected to the same server.
Direct Connect fails
Recheck the endpoint character by character, including punctuation and the port. Ask the operator to confirm that the server is online and that the address has not changed. Try the same endpoint through Steam’s Game Servers Favorites list. If both methods fail while other listings work, the problem is likely specific to the supplied endpoint or the server’s availability rather than the general browser.
The list looks outdated
Use Refresh and wait for the listings to repopulate. If you are returning to a server you previously joined, use Rejoin or open History. A stored Favorite can remain useful even when the server is not currently shown in a general discovery tab, but it cannot connect while the server is offline.
Official, verified and community servers
The browser distinguishes discovery categories, but the terms describe different things. The Official tab is a location for official listings. A verified server is included in the publicly available verified-server list. A community server is operated by a third party and may have its own plugins, rules, whitelist and moderation.

Read the listing and the linked rules for the specific server you intend to join. The operator’s published requirements control access and acceptable conduct.
