WordPress 7.1 is a reasonable upgrade when your hosting stack, plugins, theme, custom code, and integrations have been checked first. Do not treat the update as a one-click gamble: make and test a backup of both files and the database, rehearse the upgrade on staging when possible, then verify every critical site journey after the database upgrade.

What WordPress 7.1 is, and whether it is safe
WordPress 7.1, codenamed “Mary Lou,” was released on August 19, 2026. The official release process is available from Dashboard > Updates or through the WordPress release archive. The release records database version 61833; seeing a database-upgrade prompt after the files are installed is therefore normal.

“Safe” depends on the site around WordPress, not only on the core package. A site with current PHP, a supported database, maintained extensions, tested custom code, and a restorable backup is a good candidate. A production site running abandoned plugins, edited vendor files, an untested payment or membership integration, or an unverified backup should be staged and repaired before its core version changes.

Checks to complete before touching production
1. Record the current state
Create a short change record before you update. Record:
- Current WordPress version, PHP version, and database engine and version.
- Active theme, child theme, inactive themes, and any theme-specific configuration.
- Every active and inactive plugin, including premium or manually uploaded packages.
- Custom PHP, JavaScript, CSS, must-use plugins, snippets, cron jobs, and server-level rules.
- Caching, object-cache, CDN, firewall, image-processing, email, analytics, search, and API integrations.
- Current symptoms, known warnings, and the exact versions you intend to restore if the change fails.
This inventory gives you a baseline for deciding whether a post-update difference is new and tells a host or developer what was present before the change.

2. Back up files and the database
WordPress documentation explicitly says to back up both the database and files before upgrading. Make a fresh backup immediately before the change, retain a separate copy outside the web server, and confirm that you can actually restore it. A backup that has never been tested is only an assumption.
- Database: preserve posts, pages, users, settings, orders, comments, custom tables, and plugin data.
- Files: preserve the WordPress installation, uploads, themes, plugins, configuration, and server-managed files needed to run the site.
- Restore information: write down the pre-update WordPress, PHP, database, theme, and plugin versions and the person or host who can perform the restore.
Do not rely on a backup stored only in the same hosting account. If the account, filesystem, or database service is unavailable, that copy may be unavailable too.

3. Protect customizations from being overwritten
A core upgrade replaces files in the main WordPress installation. Direct edits to distributed theme files can also disappear when that theme is updated. Move design changes into a child theme and put maintained custom behavior in a supported custom-code mechanism rather than modifying vendor files. Keep a copy of any existing edits so you can migrate them deliberately instead of discovering their loss after the update.
4. Check PHP and database versions
The WordPress Hosting Team’s 2026 guidance recommends the following targets for new WordPress 7.1 installations:

These figures describe new-installation guidance and compatibility boundaries; they do not mean that upgrading WordPress will upgrade PHP or the database for you. Ask the host which versions actually run on the site, whether PHP can be changed per site, and how a PHP reversal would be handled during recovery.
5. Check every plugin, theme, and integration
Review the update notice and changelog for every extension. Include premium and manually installed packages whose updater may be separate from the WordPress Dashboard. Look for a release explicitly tested with WordPress 7.1, a maintainer’s compatibility statement, or a required extension update.

- Replace abandoned plugins and themes rather than carrying an unmaintained dependency into a core upgrade.
- Pay special attention to authentication, memberships, commerce, forms, SEO, multilingual features, custom post types, page builders, media processing, and REST or external API connections.
- Check custom code for deprecated functions, hard-coded version assumptions, and hooks that your theme or plugins provide.
- Confirm that licensing or account access is available if a premium extension must be downloaded again during recovery.
No compatibility label can test your exact combination of extensions and data. Treat it as a useful signal, then verify the workflows that matter to your site.
6. Test away from production
Clone the site to staging or a local environment when your hosting setup allows it. Use a copy of the production database and files, restrict access to the clone, and disable outbound email or payment actions so tests cannot affect real users.

- Log in as an administrator, editor, member, and any other important role.
- Create, edit, schedule, preview, publish, and search content.
- Upload and display images, video, downloads, embeds, and custom fields.
- Submit every important form and confirm validation, notifications, and spam controls.
- Run checkout, subscription, ticket, or membership flows in the provider’s test mode.
- Call REST or other external APIs and verify authentication, webhooks, and data mapping.
- Run scheduled events, background jobs, backups, indexing, email delivery, analytics, and cache purges.
Resolve failures on staging before scheduling the production change. Staging does not remove risk, but it turns many surprises into fixable pre-release work.

Choose an update method deliberately
There are three practical approaches. Select one based on your rollback readiness and the amount of verification you can perform, not on convenience alone.

Compare the options on five questions: how quickly you can restore, whether PHP and the database are supported and secure, how thoroughly extensions and custom code have been tested, how much staging and verification you can perform, and whether you can access logs and PHP controls or obtain competent host support.
How to upgrade WordPress 7.1
- Set a change window. Choose a period with low traffic, notify anyone publishing or administering the site, and pause unrelated deployments.
- Create and verify the final backup. Capture both files and the database, store a separate copy, and confirm that the restore procedure and responsible person are known.
- Open the updater. In the WordPress admin area, go to Dashboard > Updates. The official release page also provides the release archive for a manual installation path.
- Run the core update. WordPress unpacks and verifies the new files, installs the core version, and upgrades the database. Do not close the process or start another update while it is running.
- Complete any database prompt. Sign in again if requested and allow the database upgrade to finish before testing content or updating extensions.
- Update extensions in controlled groups. Update plugins and themes from the Dashboard when their maintainers have released compatible versions. Group related changes, check the site after each group, and keep the backup current before extension updates.
- Refresh caches only as needed. Clear application, object, CDN, and browser caches when stale output is masking the new code; avoid treating a cache purge as a substitute for fixing an error.
- Run the verification list. Test the public site, admin, forms, email, scheduled events, APIs, search, analytics, and any revenue or membership journey before declaring the change complete.
What to verify after the database upgrade
Start with a fresh private-browser session and then test while logged in. Check both the rendered result and the server-side logs.
- Administration: Dashboard, editor, media library, user roles, settings pages, Site Health, and update screens load without warnings.
- Content: Existing posts and pages open correctly; custom post types, taxonomies, blocks, menus, widgets, and metadata remain intact.
- Forms and accounts: Validation, login, password reset, registration, permissions, confirmations, and notification emails work.
- Commerce or subscriptions: Product pages, carts, checkout, payment callbacks, renewals, refunds, and order emails behave as expected in the appropriate test mode.
- Performance layers: Cached and uncached pages agree, CDN assets load, object-cache connections remain healthy, and no stale error page is being served.
- Automation: Scheduled events run, cron jobs complete, feeds and sitemaps regenerate, search indexing proceeds, and backups still execute.
- Integrations: REST endpoints, webhooks, analytics, advertising tags, email providers, identity services, and any game or community APIs continue to authenticate and exchange data.
Review PHP and web-server logs for new fatal errors, warnings, timeouts, and database errors. Record what you tested, when, and with which versions so a later incident can be correlated with this change.

If the update breaks the site
Maintenance mode never clears
If a failed update leaves the site stuck in maintenance mode, the official update documentation says to remove the .maintenance file from the WordPress directory and retry. Remove only that file, confirm the update process has stopped, and then inspect logs before attempting another change.
A fatal error appears after the core or extension update
Use the error log and the timestamp to identify the changed component. If the admin is inaccessible, use the host’s file or recovery tools to disable the suspected extension, or ask the host to do so. Do not repeatedly update unrelated plugins while the cause is unknown. Once the site is stable, obtain a compatible extension release or have the custom code corrected, then retest on staging.
The site fails after a PHP change
A WordPress core update and a PHP upgrade are separate changes. If PHP was changed as part of the maintenance window and a restore is required, the PHP guidance notes that the host may need to return the site to its prior PHP version before the backup is restored. Confirm the host’s supported reversal process before you begin.
You need to roll back WordPress
Rollback is not an automatic undo button for a major WordPress version. Preserve the pre-update backup and restore both the files and the database. Restoring only one can leave code and data out of sync—for example, newer database structures with older files or newer plugin data with older plugin code.
Document the exact WordPress, PHP, database, theme, plugin, and server configuration that produced the working backup. Keep the site in a controlled maintenance window while restoring, then verify logins, content, forms, scheduled jobs, email, search, and integrations before reopening it.
Common mistakes that make an upgrade riskier
- Updating without a usable backup: a downloaded archive is not enough unless you know where it is and how to restore it.
- Updating everything at once: simultaneous core, PHP, theme, and plugin changes make the failing component difficult to identify.
- Ignoring inactive extensions: inactive code can still be reactivated later and may be part of a deployment or migration process.
- Assuming a “compatible” badge covers custom code: your snippets, child theme, and integrations are unique to your site.
- Testing only the home page: failures often appear in publishing, forms, checkout, cron, REST calls, email, or search instead.
- Purging caches before investigating: cache clearing can hide symptoms temporarily while the underlying PHP or database error remains.
- Leaving the rollback plan to the incident: establish who controls PHP versions, databases, files, and DNS before the maintenance window starts.
Go/no-go decision for WordPress 7.1
Proceed in the current window only when all of these statements are true:
- A fresh backup contains both the database and files, is stored separately, and has a known restore path.
- The host confirms supported PHP and database versions, with a documented PHP reversal process if needed.
- Every important plugin, theme, custom-code path, and integration has been reviewed for 7.1 compatibility.
- Staging tests or a suitably small risk profile justify the chosen update method.
- You have time to complete the database upgrade and post-update checks without rushing.
- Someone can inspect logs and disable a failing extension or restore the site if the change goes wrong.
If any answer is “no,” postpone the production update long enough to close that gap. WordPress 7.1 can be installed from the Dashboard, but a controlled, reversible change—not the button click—is what makes the upgrade safe.
