To install a Technic modpack on a Minecraft server, build the server with the exact Minecraft and Forge versions used by the client pack, copy the pack’s server-compatible files, remove client-only mods, accept the EULA, and then give players the same pack version in Technic Launcher. A home server works for a small group if your computer and connection are reliable; friends outside your network also need port forwarding or a tunneling service.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
The sequence below follows Technic’s current short server guide and separates the steps that must match exactly (Minecraft version, Forge version, mods and configs) from choices that depend on your hardware, operating system and network.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat you need before installing
Prepare these items before downloading anything:
- The exact Technic pack name and release/version that everyone will use.
- The Minecraft version and Forge version listed for that release. Do not assume that two releases with similar names use the same loader.
- A computer that can remain online while people play, with enough free disk space for the world, backups and logs.
- Java installed on the server computer. Technic’s server documentation explicitly notes that “running the installer requires having Java installed.” See the official Technic server guide.
- Permission to create a folder, run programs and, if friends are connecting remotely, change your router or firewall settings.
Players need Technic Launcher on their own computers. The official Technic download page says the launcher handles the installation work; its Windows installer includes the Java runtime that Technic needs. That bundled runtime helps clients, but it does not remove the requirement for Java on the machine where you run the Forge server installer.
Confirm the pack, Minecraft and Forge versions
Version matching is the most important compatibility rule. The server’s Minecraft and Forge versions must be the same versions used by the client pack. A server built for a different Forge build can stop during startup, reject players, or report missing or incompatible mods even when the pack name appears correct.

Find the client version
- Open the pack’s page in Technic Launcher.
- Record the exact release selected for play, not merely the pack’s current title.
- Check the pack description or release notes for the Minecraft version and Forge build.
- Write those values down before creating the server folder. If the pack author supplies a server download or special installation note, treat it as authoritative for that release.
Do not update the client pack after setting up the server unless you plan and test a matching server update. A minor pack revision can change a mod, configuration file or dependency.
Choose the Java runtime from the Minecraft version
Technic’s guide gives these Java examples:
| Minecraft version | Java guidance in Technic’s server documentation |
|---|---|
| Below 1.17 | Java 8 works. |
| 1.17 | Java 16. |
| 1.18 | Java 17. |
| 1.19 | Java 17.0.3. |
| Versions after 1.13 | Newer Java versions generally work, but the pack’s documentation takes precedence. |
These are compatibility examples, not a promise that every pack accepts every Java build. Verify the pack’s own instructions, especially for older packs and custom launchers. If the server reports an “unsupported class version” or similar Java error, check the Java executable used by the start script rather than assuming the Java installed for another application is being used.

Create a dedicated server folder
Make a new folder used only by this server. A short path such as C:MinecraftServersYourPack on Windows or ~/minecraft-servers/your-pack on Linux makes scripts and backups easier. Do not install into the Technic Launcher’s private files; the launcher’s client instance and the dedicated server have different requirements.
Keep the folder easy to back up. A typical server directory will eventually contain the Forge server files, mods, config, world data, logs, eula.txt, and either a generated or custom start script. Leave several gigabytes free beyond the initial download so the world can grow and you can retain a backup.
Install Forge as a server
- Download the Forge installer that corresponds to the Minecraft and Forge versions recorded for the pack.
- Open the installer with the Java version required by that pack.
- Select Install server, choose the dedicated server folder you created, and confirm the installation.
- Wait for Forge to place the server jar and supporting files in that folder. Do not move only the jar to another directory; generated libraries and scripts may rely on the original layout.
Recent Forge installers can generate run.bat and run.sh. If they are present, use those scripts first because they contain the loader arguments expected by that Forge release. The exact filenames can differ by version, so use the script and jar actually created in your folder.
Copy the Technic pack into the server
Install or open the same pack release in Technic Launcher so you can access its files. Copy the pack’s server-relevant content into the Forge server folder, preserving subfolders.

Folders that normally matter
mods: the mod jar files required by the pack.config: configuration files that make the server behave like the client pack.- Asset folders supplied by the pack, when the pack documentation requires them.
binwhen it is part of that pack’s structure. Technic’s modpack-authoring guidance identifiesbin, modsandconfigas core pack folders.
Copy the contents rather than nesting the entire client instance inside the server directory. After copying, the server folder should contain mods and config at its top level, alongside the Forge files.
Remove client-only material
A dedicated server cannot load every file used by a graphical client. Remove mods that exist only for rendering, menus, shaders, key bindings, minimaps or other client functions, along with configuration folders that belong exclusively to those mods. If a pack author provides a server pack, use that instead of guessing.
When a startup log names a client-only class, a rendering library or a mod that refuses to run in a dedicated environment, stop the server, remove that mod from mods, and remove its corresponding client-only configuration if one exists. Do not remove gameplay mods merely because they have a client component; check the pack’s documentation or the error message first.
Keep both sides identical
Every player should use the same pack release, mod versions and relevant configuration as the server. A player with an older release may connect far enough to see a handshake error, while a newer release may attempt blocks, items or registry entries the server does not have. Record the release name in your server notes so updates are deliberate rather than accidental.
Start the server and accept the EULA
Use generated scripts when available
Double-click run.bat on Windows or execute run.sh on Linux. If the script is not executable on Linux, grant execute permission once with chmod +x run.sh, then run it from the server directory with ./run.sh. Running from the server directory ensures Forge can find its libraries, mods and configuration files.
Create a script only when necessary
If Forge did not generate a usable script, create one that calls the jar and loader arguments for your release. Technic’s example is:

java -Xmx4G forge.jar nogui
Replace forge.jar with the actual jar name and adjust the memory value for your machine and pack. The -Xmx4G value is an allocation example, not a universal requirement or a performance benchmark. Giving Java more memory than the computer can spare can make the operating system less responsive; giving it too little can cause crashes or long pauses. Follow the pack or host’s guidance and leave memory for the operating system.
Some Forge releases expect a generated script or additional arguments. If a custom command exits immediately, return to the generated run.bat/run.sh or inspect the Forge files in the folder instead of repeatedly changing random flags.

The first successful launch can take longer while Forge builds caches and the world is generated. Keep the console open until it reports that the server is ready for connections. Closing the window during this stage can leave incomplete files.
Make a local connection first
Before configuring the internet, test from the same computer or home network. Use the server computer’s local address when connecting from another device on your Wi-Fi, or the local host address when the game is running on the server machine. A successful local test proves that Forge, the pack files and the world load; it does not prove that remote routing is configured.
If the client reports missing mods during this test, stop and fix the pack mismatch before opening a public port. Compare the client’s release, Minecraft version, Forge version and mods directory with the server’s records.

Let friends connect from outside your home
Players outside your Wi-Fi cannot normally reach a private server address. Technic’s guidance says that people outside your Wi-Fi need either port forwarding or a port-tunneling service, followed by a server restart. See the Technic server instructions for the official overview.

Direct port forwarding
- Give the server computer a stable local address, using your router’s address reservation feature when available.
- In the router’s port-forwarding screen, forward the server port shown in your server configuration to that computer’s local address and the appropriate protocol.
- Allow the Java server through the computer’s firewall when prompted, limiting the rule to the required network scope where your operating system permits.
- Restart the server after applying the rule, then have a friend test using your public address and server port.
Router menus and exact rules vary by manufacturer and internet provider. Some connections use carrier-grade NAT or block inbound traffic, in which case a forwarding rule may not be sufficient. Never publish administrative credentials, and expose only the game service you intend to run.
Port tunneling
A tunneling service gives the server an externally reachable endpoint without requiring you to change the router. It can be useful when you lack router access or your provider does not offer a directly reachable address. Check the service’s current limits, latency, privacy terms and reliability before relying on it for a long-running world. The tunnel must remain online while friends play, and the connection address may change depending on the service.
| Consideration | Port forwarding | Tunneling service |
|---|---|---|
| Router access | Required; you configure the home router and firewall. | Usually not required; the tunnel client makes the outbound connection. |
| Latency and path | Often follows a direct route, but depends on your internet connection. | Depends on the tunnel provider’s relay location and load; exact performance is not stated in Technic’s guide. |
| Exposure | Your home connection exposes the forwarded game port. | The provider exposes a relay endpoint; review its privacy and access controls. |
| Limits and reliability | Bound by your upload capacity, address changes and router/ISP restrictions. | Bound by the service’s plan limits, uptime and relay capacity; current limits vary by service. |
Have every player install the same pack
- Install Technic Launcher from the official Technic download page.
- Search for the pack by name in the launcher, or paste the pack’s Platform API link when the pack author provides one.
- Select the exact release that matches the server’s recorded release.
- Launch the pack once so the client downloads its mods and creates its local files.
- Use the server address supplied by the host. Players on the same home network use the local address; remote players use the forwarded or tunneled endpoint.
Do not let one player update the pack independently while others remain on the old release. If the launcher presents several similarly named entries, compare the author, release number and Minecraft version with the server notes.
Self-hosting versus paid hosting
A home server is practical when one person has a machine that can stay on and the group is comfortable handling files and networking. Paid hosting can reduce hardware and router work, but the host still has to install the correct Forge build, upload the pack and maintain backups. Prices and hardware allocations differ by provider and are not stated in Technic’s documentation.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted at home | Paid server hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | You install Java and Forge, copy the pack, run the EULA step and configure networking. | The provider supplies a running machine or control panel, but pack and Forge setup still require verification. |
| Recurring cost | No hosting-provider charge is required; electricity, hardware and internet costs vary and are not stated here. | A recurring hosting fee is required; the amount depends on the selected plan and is not stated in the official guide. |
| File and mod control | Full access to jars, configs, scripts and backups. | Control depends on the provider’s file access, panel and policies. |
| Network exposure | You handle port forwarding or a tunnel and protect the home network. | The provider normally supplies an external address, reducing home-router work. |
| Uptime | Depends on your power, computer, internet connection and maintenance. | Depends on the provider’s infrastructure and plan; no universal uptime figure is established here. |
| Backups | You must create and test them yourself. | Backup tools may be offered, but retention and restore policies vary; confirm them before relying on the service. |
| RAM and CPU | Limited by the hardware you own and the memory you safely allocate. | Limited by the purchased plan; advertised allocations vary by provider. |
Common failures and precise fixes
The server stops immediately
- Read the final console lines and the first error, not just the last “server stopped” message.
- Confirm that the Java runtime matches the Minecraft version guidance and that the start script calls that Java executable.
- Verify that the Forge jar and its generated libraries are in the folder from which the script runs.
- Remove a recently added mod and test again if the error names a specific jar.
Players get a mod-list or registry mismatch
Stop the server and compare both sides against the same pack release. Check for a missing jar, an extra jar, a different Forge build or a configuration copied from another release. Re-copy mods and config from a clean client instance, then remove client-only files before restarting.
A client-only mod crashes the dedicated server
Look for rendering, screen, key-binding or other client-environment references in the error. Remove that mod from the server’s mods folder and its matching client-only configuration. Keep a note of the removed file so a future pack update does not silently add it back.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
The EULA message appears every time
Confirm that the file is named exactly eula.txt, contains eula=true, and is saved in the same folder as the server startup files. If the server is launched from a shortcut or service, check that it is not starting a second copy from a different directory.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Local players connect but remote friends time out
- Confirm that the server is running and listening on the configured port.
- Check the computer firewall rule.
- Verify that the router forwards the port to the server computer’s current local address.
- Give remote players the public address or tunnel endpoint, not the private 192.168.x.x or similar home address.
- If forwarding cannot work because of carrier-grade NAT or missing router access, use a suitable tunnel instead.
The server is unstable or runs out of memory
Check the console and logs for Java heap errors, then review the memory value in the start script. The documented -Xmx4G example is not a guarantee that four gigabytes is correct for your pack. Close other applications, leave memory for the operating system, and increase the allocation only when the machine has capacity and the pack’s documentation supports it.
Update a running pack without corrupting the world
- Tell every player which release will be used and schedule downtime.
- Stop the server cleanly from its console.
- Back up the world,
mods, config, scripts and server properties to a separate location. - Install the matching Forge version required by the new pack release, following that release’s instructions.
- Replace or merge the new
mods, configand required asset folders. Do not blindly preserve obsolete configuration files when the pack author says they changed. - Start the server and test with one client on the same release before inviting the whole group.
- Have every player update to that exact release before reconnecting.
Keep the old backup until the new release has loaded the world and completed a real play test. If a migration fails, stop the server and restore the backed-up world and files rather than repeatedly launching an unverified combination.
Packaging a private or custom Technic pack
If you are assembling your own pack for friends, Technic’s authoring guidance treats bin, mods and config as core folders. A custom pack distributed through Technic also requires a direct-download URL for the pack archive. Make sure the URL serves the file itself and remains reachable by every player who needs to install it; a web page that requires a click or login is not equivalent to a direct download.
Publish one clearly identified release, document the Minecraft and Forge versions, and state which files are client-only. Build the dedicated server from that same release, then test a clean client installation before sharing the server address.
