This is a destructive database reset, not an in-game administrator command. Buildings, containers, map progress, and other saved world state are removed from the new world. A dated backup—and preferably a renamed database kept outside the active save location—is the difference between a recoverable reset and an irreversible loss.

What a Conan Exiles world wipe actually does
A Conan Exiles server stores the persistent world in a database file. Wiping means replacing that file with a newly generated one. The server does not need a special “wipe” command: when it starts and cannot find the active map database, it creates an empty world.
The reset affects database-backed world state, including placed buildings, containers, map exploration and other progression saved in the world. The Linux setup guidance explicitly warns that deleting the database erases progression and saved buildings.
#1 Best Overall
- EXPLORE A VAST WORLD: Explore a giant world, from the burning desert in the south to the snow-capped mountains in the north. Discover ancient cultures, ruins, and dungeons
- SURVIVE: Stay warm, cool yourself down, drink and eat, weather scouring sandstorms, prevent your mind from being corrupted when exploring dark dungeons, and battle vicious monsters to stay alive
- BUILD: Harvest resources to craft tools and weapons, then build anything from a small home to entire cities piece by piece. Build walls, traps, elevators, and more, then deck out your creations with a wide variety of different furniture, crafting stations, and NPC guards
- DOMINATE: Wage war against your enemies, use siege weapons and explosives and see their walls crumble to dust, then unleash your savage fury in violent and brutal combat
- BUILD AN ARMY OF THRALLS: Capture NPCs, drag them back to your base, and use the Wheel of Pain to break their will. Turn them into archers, crafters, entertainers, and more for your settlements
Do not assume that characters, levels, inventories or followers will survive a private-server wipe. Funcom’s Unreal Engine 4-to-Unreal Engine 5 migration instructions describe a particular migration in which some character data could be retained while bases and placed world items did not transfer. That behavior belongs to that migration process and should not be treated as a promise for an ordinary private-server reset.

Confirm the selected map before touching a file. Renaming the wrong database can leave the world you intended to keep untouched while making troubleshooting harder. A server that appears to have “ignored” the wipe is often still using the other map’s database, or a provider has restored a backup automatically.

Back up before touching anything
Make the backup while the server is stopped. Copying a database that is still being written can produce an unusable recovery copy, so do not begin file work until the process or hosting panel reports that the server has fully stopped.
What to copy
- Copy the entire
ConanSandbox/Saveddirectory to a dated location. On a Windows dedicated server, the usual root isSteamLibrarysteamappscommonConan Exiles Dedicated ServerConanSandboxSaved. - At minimum, preserve the active database and every available
game_backup_##.dbfile. Keep the original filename and timestamps in the backup. - If the server uses mods, copy
ConanSandboxModsas well. The Linux setup guidance recommends backing up bothSavedandMods. - Record which map was active, the server’s mod list and the date and time of the backup. This makes a later rollback or clean modded start unambiguous.
A folder name such as conan-backup-2026-10-14-before-wipe is more useful than an unlabeled copy. Keep the backup outside the live Saved directory so a host cleanup, restart script or later wipe cannot mistake it for an active save.

Windows dedicated server: complete wipe procedure
- Announce the downtime. Tell players when the reset will occur and make sure nobody is connected. A player joining while files are being changed can create a new save or leave the server in an indeterminate state.
- Stop the server. Close
ConanSandboxServer.exe, or use the provider’s stop control if the server is managed through a panel. Wait until the process is gone and the panel no longer reports the server as running. - Open the save directory. Browse to
SteamLibrarysteamappscommonConan Exiles Dedicated ServerConanSandboxSaved. Windows server configuration files are underSavedConfigWindowsServer; do not confuse that configuration folder with the map database itself. - Create the backup. Copy the complete
Savedfolder to a dated backup location. Include the active database, thegame_backup_##.dbfiles and, when applicable, theConanSandboxModsfolder. - Confirm the active map. For Exiled Lands, locate
game.db. For Isle of Siptah, locatedlc_siptah.db. Check the filename before renaming it; do not rely only on a remembered map setting. - Preserve or remove the database. The safer reset is to rename the file, for example
game.db.before-wipe-2026-10-14, or move it outsideSaved. Deleting it is permanent unless a separate backup exists. - Start the server once. Launch the executable or use the host control. With the active database absent, Conan Exiles should generate a new empty file for that map.
- Verify the replacement. If you want a controlled check, stop the server again after it has generated the file and confirm that a new database exists before opening the server to players. Compare its creation or modification time with the wipe operation.
- Reapply the intended configuration. Check the server settings and mod list, then connect with an administrator account. Test spawning, map loading and any essential mod content before announcing that the fresh world is ready.
Never rename or delete a live database. The stop step is not optional: the server may still have the file open or may write the old world back during shutdown.
Linux servers
The database principle is identical on Linux. Stop the service, back up ConanSandbox/Saved and—when mods are installed—ConanSandbox/Mods, then rename or remove the active map database. Use game.db for Exiled Lands and dlc_siptah.db for Isle of Siptah.
Renaming is preferable when you are testing a reset because it leaves a clearly identifiable rollback file. If the goal is a clean modded start, do not simply reuse an old database while changing the mod set: saved references to removed or changed mods can remain in that database. Preserve the old save, set the intended mod list deliberately and let the server create a new database.
The Linux setup reference’s warning is literal: deleting the database erases progression and saved buildings. Treat the operation as a new-world deployment, not as a temporary cache clear.

Rented and hosted servers
Hosted servers expose different control panels and file managers, so there is no universal button sequence. Use the host’s stop control first, then open its file manager or ask support to perform the file operation. The documented hosted-server method is still to delete the game database; request a rename or keep a downloaded copy when you need a recoverable reset.
Hosted-server checklist
- Stop the instance in the panel and wait for a confirmed offline state.
- Download or copy the provider’s
Saveddirectory, including database backups. - Back up the mod directory if the host exposes one.
- Identify whether the active map is Exiled Lands or Isle of Siptah and select the matching filename.
- Rename or move the database if the file manager permits it; otherwise download a copy before deleting it.
- Start the instance and watch the console or log for creation of a new database.
- Check whether the provider has an automatic restore, scheduled backup or “reinstall” feature that could put the old file back.
If a panel does not expose the save files, support must perform the operation. Tell support exactly which map is active and ask them to preserve the old database rather than deleting it outright.
Rename versus delete: choose the right reset
| Approach | What happens | When it makes sense | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rename the active database | The server cannot use the old filename and creates a new database; the old file remains available. | Recommended for a planned wipe, testing, or any situation where rollback may be needed. | The renamed file can consume disk space and must not be accidentally restored as the active save. |
Move the database outside Saved |
The live save location is empty while the original is stored elsewhere. | Useful when you want a clean save directory and a separate recovery archive. | Misplacing the file can make recovery slower; label the destination clearly. |
| Delete the database | The old world is removed from the server’s save location. | Only after a verified external backup exists and permanent destruction is intended. | Recovery is impossible if the backup is missing, corrupt or overwritten. |
What players should expect after the wipe
The new database represents a new world. Buildings, bases, placed objects, containers and map progression from the old database will not appear. The server’s settings and mod files are separate from the world database, so they may still be present, but they should be reviewed before players return.
Character persistence is not guaranteed by the wipe procedure. Whether a character remains available depends on the server’s save structure and the context in which the reset occurs. Tell players to treat inventories, followers, levels and other character data as potentially lost unless you have a tested, server-specific recovery plan.

A wipe also does not automatically solve a mod problem. If an old database contains references to a mod that has been removed or updated, reusing that database can leave incompatible data behind. A clean database plus a deliberately chosen mod list is the safer route for a fresh modded season.

Keep the server stopped while restoring a save. The rollback method documented for Conan Exiles uses one of the automatic database backups, named in the form game_backup_##.db.
- Stop the server completely.
- Preserve the current
game.dbunder another name rather than overwriting it. For Isle of Siptah, preserve the currentdlc_siptah.dbinstead. - Inspect the timestamps of the available
game_backup_##.dbfiles and select a known-good point. Automatic saves are normally about five minutes apart, so the newest file is not automatically the correct one. - Rename the selected backup to the active filename:
game.dbfor Exiled Lands ordlc_siptah.dbfor Isle of Siptah. - Start the server and verify the restored world with an administrator account before allowing normal players to connect.
For a rollback from an external archive, copy the preserved database back into the correct Saved directory only after the server is stopped. Keep the failed new-world database until the recovery is confirmed; it may contain useful evidence for troubleshooting.
Troubleshooting a wipe
The old world still loads
- Check that the server was fully stopped before the file was renamed.
- Confirm that you changed the database for the active map, not the other map’s file.
- Look for a provider backup or restore task that recreated the original database automatically.
- Verify that the renamed file is outside the active filename and that no second save directory is being used by the service.
The new world will not load
- Stop the server and restore the preserved database or a known-good
game_backup_##.dbfile. - Check the server log for the first database or mod-loading error rather than repeatedly restarting.
- Confirm that the selected map database matches the map configured for the server.
- If the server is hosted, give the provider the exact filename, timestamp and log error and ask whether an automated restore ran.
The reset was meant to remove a mod
Back up the old database and the complete mod directory first. Remove or update the mod list intentionally, then use a clean database if the objective is a genuinely fresh modded world. Reusing the old database after removing a mod can preserve incompatible references.
Final pre-launch checklist
- Players were notified and no one is connected.
- The server process or hosting instance is confirmed stopped.
- The entire
Saveddirectory is stored in a dated backup. - The
Modsdirectory is backed up when mods are installed. - The active map and corresponding database filename were confirmed.
- The old database was renamed or moved, unless permanent deletion was explicitly intended.
- A new database was generated after startup.
- Settings and mods were reviewed before players returned.
- An administrator tested the fresh world.
The Bottom Line
A safe Conan Exiles wipe is a controlled database replacement: stop the server, back up Saved (and Mods when applicable), preserve the correct map database, then start the server to generate a new one. Keep the old file until the fresh world has been tested.
