Install demos from the Microsoft Store or your Xbox library, keep only the trials you are actively testing on the internal drive, and uninstall finished demos to recover space. When a removed demo is still offered for your account and region, download it again from My games & apps > Ready to install or its Store page. For a larger collection, archive titles on compatible USB storage or add an Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card.
What happens when you install an Xbox demo
An Xbox demo is installed and managed like other digital game content. The console downloads the files to its internal storage unless you select another available destination. The Store’s displayed download size is the controlling figure for that specific demo; updates can require additional working space, so the free-space number you see before installation should be treated as a minimum rather than a target.

Xbox console guidance lists either 512GB or 1TB of internal storage, with the figure depending on the console model. Microsoft’s guide was checked on October 13, 2026; its page publication date is not stated. The advertised capacity is not all available for games because the operating system and reserved data use part of it.

Check space before downloading
Open the console’s storage view
From the Games & apps area, open the console’s storage view and note the available internal capacity. Compare that number with the demo’s size on its Microsoft Store page. Leave extra room for patches, temporary installation files and other system operations; a download that appears to fit exactly can fail when an update is required.
Decide where the demo should live
- Internal storage: the default choice and the least complicated location for a short test.
- Compatible USB hard drive or SSD: useful for holding or moving less-used titles when internal space is tight.
- Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card: the dedicated added-storage option for keeping supported Series X|S titles ready to play.
If the console reports less free space than expected, review the largest installed games and apps first. Removing one large finished title can recover more capacity than deleting several small demos.
Install a demo from the Microsoft Store or your library
- Open the Microsoft Store on the Xbox console, or open your games library if the demo has already been associated with your account.
- Search for the demo and open its product page. Confirm that it is the demo edition, not a similarly named full game or add-on.
- Choose the install or download command and select the available storage location if the console offers a choice.
- Watch the download queue until the installation finishes. Do not judge success only by the icon appearing; open the demo once so any first-run update or license check can complete.
- Return to the Games & apps area and confirm the remaining free space before installing another trial.
Xbox confirms that digital games and content can be bought and downloaded directly from the console or from xbox.com. A demo’s availability, size and installation options can vary by title, account and region, so the current Store page takes precedence over an older listing or a remembered download size.

Keep an active-test list
Limit internal storage to demos you expect to launch during the current testing period. A simple rotation is to keep one or two trials installed, play them enough to make a decision, and then remove them before starting new downloads. This avoids the common pattern of downloading every interesting trial and discovering that a major game update cannot install.
Remove a finished demo
- Open My games & apps and locate the demo in the installed list.
- Open the title’s management menu and choose the uninstall or remove option.
- Confirm the removal and wait for the console to update its free-space figure.
- Check the storage view again before starting the next download.
Xbox explicitly recommends uninstalling games that you are not actively playing as one way to gain space. The same approach works for demos: once a trial has answered your question, there is little benefit in leaving its files on the internal drive.

Reinstall a removed demo later
Find it in Ready to install
On Xbox One, Microsoft Support directs users to My games & apps > Ready to install when a game or app is not currently visible on the console. The same library concept is useful when you have uninstalled a demo: open the not-installed section, locate the title and start the download.
- Open My games & apps.
- Open Ready to install (or the equivalent not-installed portion of your library on the current console interface).
- Find the demo, select it and choose install.
- If it is not listed, search the Microsoft Store while signed in to the account that originally obtained the demo.
Reinstallation is conditional. The demo must still be offered for your account and region, and the Store listing must still permit a download. A title can disappear because a publisher withdrew it, a promotion ended, regional rights changed or the account is different. Uninstalling therefore saves space, but it is not a guarantee that a delisted demo can be recovered indefinitely.
What uninstalling does to saves and settings
Do not assume that every piece of demo data survives removal. Microsoft’s technical documentation distinguishes title-specific persistent local storage from game saves: persistent local storage is tied to the title’s install lifetime, is removed when the title is uninstalled and is not automatically restored when the title is reinstalled.
That can include local options, caches or other data created by the demo. The exact behavior is title-dependent, so check the individual game’s support information if preserving settings or local progress matters.
Progress that a title supports through Xbox connected or cloud storage can behave differently from local demo data. Cloud-backed progress may return after you reinstall and sign in, while a local-only option can be gone. Treat an uninstall as potentially destructive to local demo information unless the title clearly documents another behavior.

Choose between uninstalling, USB storage and an expansion card
| Choice | Best for | What happens when you want to play | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall and reinstall | A few demos tested occasionally | Download the title again from Ready to install or its Store page, if it remains available. | Uses no extra hardware, but requires another download and depends on continued availability. |
| Compatible USB external hard drive or SSD | Low-cost archiving and moving less-used titles | Some titles can run from the USB device; Series X|S-optimized titles generally must be moved back to internal storage or a compatible expansion card before play. | More capacity at a lower complexity than replacing the console, but transfer time and play-compatibility limits apply. |
| Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card | Keeping supported Series X|S titles ready on added storage | Designed to provide ready-to-play capacity alongside the internal drive for compatible Series X|S content. | Higher hardware cost than simply uninstalling; verify the card and console compatibility before buying. |
Xbox’s console guide names all three approaches: uninstall games that are not being played, connect an external hard drive, or add a storage expansion card for Xbox Series X|S. The right choice depends on whether your priority is zero cost, inexpensive archiving or immediate play from expanded storage.
Use USB storage as an archive, not an automatic performance upgrade
Move titles you want to keep
A compatible USB drive can hold or move installed demos and games, freeing the internal drive without deleting the files. This is useful when a demo is large, still available offline and likely to be revisited, but does not need to remain ready every day.
Understand Series X|S restrictions
Storage guidance notes that Series X|S-optimized games stored on USB generally need to be moved back to the internal drive or to a compatible expansion card before they can be played. A USB device can therefore be an archive and transfer location even when it is not a playable location for that title. Check the game’s optimization label and the console’s move or copy screen before assuming that a USB installation will launch.
Keep the archive organized
- Use a clear folder or naming convention if the drive also contains non-game files.
- Leave enough free space on the console for updates when moving a title back.
- Safely stop using the drive through the console interface before disconnecting it.
- Keep the drive connected if you want the console to recognize its archived installations without reconnecting it each time.
When an expansion card makes sense
An Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card is the dedicated option when you want additional capacity that can keep supported Series X|S titles ready to play. It avoids the repeated move-back step associated with USB storage for optimized games, which matters if you rotate large demos frequently or keep several demanding titles installed.
Before purchasing, verify that the card is intended for your console generation and that its capacity suits your library. The guide establishes the expansion card as an added-storage method, but it does not establish a universal capacity, price or retailer; those details vary by model, region and date.

Troubleshoot common demo-storage problems
The download will not start
- Recheck the available internal space and compare it with the Store’s current size for the demo.
- Remove a finished game or demo, then recheck the storage view.
- Look for a paused or failed item in the download queue and resume it after freeing space.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account that can access the demo.
The demo is missing from the installed list
Open My games & apps > Ready to install. If it is absent there, search the Store while signed in to the correct account. If the Store no longer offers the title in your region, reinstallation may not be possible even though you installed it previously.
The demo is on USB but will not launch
Check whether it is Series X|S-optimized. If so, move it to the internal drive or a compatible expansion card before play. USB storage remains useful for keeping the files, but it is not necessarily a ready-to-play location for optimized content.
Progress or settings disappeared after reinstalling
Persistent local storage is removed when a title is uninstalled and is not restored automatically. Look for the title’s documented cloud-save behavior and sign in to the same Xbox account. If the demo stored data locally only, the missing settings or progress may not be recoverable.
A demo that used to be available cannot be downloaded
Check the account and region first, then open the current Store page. Availability can change when a publisher withdraws a listing or regional rights change. Ready to install is a library location, not a promise that every previously installed demo remains downloadable forever.

A practical decision framework
Choose uninstall and reinstall when
- You test only a few demos at a time.
- Your internet connection can handle another download when you want to revisit one.
- You do not need to preserve local settings or local-only progress.
Choose USB archiving when
- You want to keep several large files without paying for added console storage.
- You are comfortable moving optimized titles back before playing them.
- You want a physical archive that reduces repeated downloads.
Choose an expansion card when
- You regularly rotate large Series X|S-optimized games or demos.
- Waiting for transfers would interfere with how you play.
- You have confirmed console and card compatibility and accept the higher hardware cost.
Storage habits that prevent the next full-drive warning
- Check first: record free internal capacity before every new demo.
- Install selectively: download only titles you plan to test soon.
- Launch once: allow first-run updates and confirm the demo works before downloading another.
- Decide promptly: uninstall a finished or rejected trial rather than letting it join a permanent backlog.
- Protect important data: assume local persistent storage can disappear with the uninstall.
- Archive deliberately: move titles to compatible USB storage when you want to keep them but do not need immediate play.
- Expand for convenience: use a Series X|S expansion card when frequent transfers are more disruptive than the hardware expense.
This workflow keeps the internal drive focused on active games while preserving a clear route to reinstall a demo that remains available.
