There is no universal winner. Buying is usually cheaper when your backlog is a short, specific list that you want to keep permanently. Game Pass can cost less when several of your target games are included in the right plan and you finish them within a few billed months. The answer is an arithmetic comparison: add the current prices of the games you will actually play, then compare that total with the monthly plan price multiplied by the months you need.
This guide uses Xbox’s US prices checked October 13, 2026. Prices, catalogs, discounts, features and availability vary by country, platform, tier and time, so treat the numbers as a dated US reference rather than a worldwide quote.

What you are really comparing
A purchase gives you a license to keep using that game under the store’s terms after you stop paying for a subscription. Game Pass gives you access while your subscription is active and while each title remains available in your plan’s catalog. Those are different products, even when the same game can be obtained either way.
Recommended Free Tools
Use two totals:
- Purchase total: add the current store prices for the exact backlog games you intend to buy, after legitimate sale prices and any confirmed member discount.
- Subscription total: multiply the monthly price of the plan that actually includes those games on your platform by the number of billed months you need.
Choose the lower total only after checking access after cancellation, catalog turnover and any plan features you would genuinely use. A large catalog number is not evidence that your particular backlog is covered.

US Game Pass prices and catalog sizes
Xbox’s US plan page, checked October 13, 2026, listed these monthly prices and advertised catalog sizes:
| Plan | Monthly US price | Advertised catalog | Who should include it in the calculation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $9.99 per month | 50+ games | Players whose target titles and required features are available in Essential on their platform. |
| Premium | $14.99 per month | 200+ games | Players needing Premium’s catalog or benefits and expecting to use them during the paid months. |
| Ultimate | $22.99 per month | 500+ games | Players whose target titles or included features require Ultimate. |
| PC Game Pass | $13.99 per month | 300+ games | PC players comparing the PC catalog and PC-specific benefits with buying PC versions. |
These are current US reference prices, not global prices. Xbox states that prices, titles, features and availability can vary by region, plan, platform and time. A promotion can lower an initial charge but may renew at the then-current rate unless you cancel.
How many games make Game Pass worth it?
There is no fixed number because games have different purchase prices and take different amounts of time to finish. The useful question is: How many of my games will I complete during the months I would keep the subscription?

- Write the backlog list. Include only games you realistically expect to start and finish (or play extensively) during the comparison period.
- Check each game’s availability. Confirm the exact title, edition, platform, region and current plan. Do not count a game merely because a similarly named version appears in a catalog.
- Record purchase prices. Use today’s individual price, a legitimate sale price that is currently available, and a confirmed subscriber discount only when you can verify the offer.
- Estimate billed months. Count the months from the first charge through the month in which you expect to stop needing access. Include an extra month if your schedule is uncertain.
- Run the equation. Compare the purchase total with monthly price × billed months.
For example, suppose your checked list contains four games priced at $16, $19, $22 and $25, for a purchase total of $82. A $14.99 plan costs $14.99 for one month, $29.98 for two, $44.97 for three, $59.96 for four, $74.95 for five and $89.94 for six. In that hypothetical basket, five months of access costs less than buying all four; six months costs more. The figures illustrate the method, not an average indie-game price or a prediction about typical savings.
Use effective cost per completed game carefully
You can divide subscription cost by the number of included games you actually complete, but that metric is meaningful only after verifying catalog membership. Paying $14.99 and sampling ten games is not automatically better than buying two games you finish and keep. Count games you would have purchased or played anyway, not every item you launch for a few minutes.
Catalog matching is the first decision
Xbox advertises more than 50, 200, 500 or 300 games depending on the plan, but those totals combine many genres and can change. Microsoft’s dynamic Game Pass-filtered Xbox listing showed 481 items when it was crawled about a month before the October 13, 2026 price check. That list was not an indie-only sample and cannot establish a representative indie price or savings rate.

Make a title-by-title checklist
- Is the exact game currently in the catalog?
- Is it included in the plan you are pricing, rather than a higher tier?
- Is the catalog version available on your console or PC?
- Is your account’s region supported?
- Will the game remain available for the months you need?
- Are downloadable content, expansions or a special edition separate purchases?
Keep a screenshot or note of the inclusion and date for a volatile title. If one must-have game is missing, add its purchase price to the subscription scenario instead of pretending the plan covers the whole backlog.
Buying advantages: permanence and sale timing
You retain access after canceling
Purchased games are not tied to your continued Game Pass billing. That matters for a backlog you expect to revisit years later, for games you want to play offline under the store’s normal requirements, or for a title that may leave the catalog before you finish it. You still depend on the store account and platform rules, but you are not relying on ongoing catalog inclusion.
Sales can change the result
Compare the price available today, not an assumed “standard indie price.” A deep sale can make buying two or three games cheaper than maintaining a subscription while you play them slowly. Conversely, buying at full price while a confirmed subscriber discount is available can make the purchase calculation unnecessarily high.
Xbox says subscribers can receive exclusive discounts on select games and add-ons. Check the exact listing and expiration date; do not apply a discount to every title or assume it remains after the subscription ends.
Buying avoids a clock
With an owned game, a long completion time does not create another monthly charge. That is valuable for completionists, players with limited weekly hours, and anyone who pauses a game to play something else. The trade-off is paying the purchase price before you know whether the game will hold your interest.
Game Pass advantages: breadth and short, intensive play periods
Several included games in one billing window
Subscription economics improve when you can move through multiple included games in one or two months. The plan can replace several individual purchases during that concentrated period, provided the catalog matches your list and you do not keep paying after the backlog session ends.

Lower upfront spending
A monthly charge can be easier to budget than buying a large group of games at once. That is a cash-flow advantage, not proof of a lower lifetime cost. Set a cancellation reminder for the month after your planned play period.
Features may have value beyond the games
Some plans include benefits such as console multiplayer access, cloud gaming or other bundled features. Include those in your decision only if you would otherwise pay for them or use them. If you need a feature that is available only in a more expensive tier, compare that tier’s price rather than the cheapest plan headline.
Cloud gaming limits arriving in November 2026
Team Xbox announced on September 3, 2026 that, beginning in November 2026, plans would include monthly cloud-gaming hour allocations: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium and 5 for Essential. Xbox said the change was expected to affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers. The announcement did not provide the price for buying additional hours; Xbox said pricing and further details would be shared before the change takes effect.
If cloud gaming is central to your backlog plan, model the included hours as a usage limit rather than assuming unlimited streaming. A player who downloads games to a console or PC may not be affected in the same way, while a player relying on streaming could face a different effective cost once the allowance is exhausted. Recheck the terms after the November rollout before committing to a long subscription.
Worked scenarios
Scenario 1: a small, slow backlog
You want three games, each confirmed in the catalog, but you can play only a few hours per week and expect to need five months. At $14.99 per month, the subscription costs $74.95. If the three games are currently available for a combined $55, buying wins financially and leaves you with continuing access. If the combined purchase price is $90, the subscription is cheaper only if all three remain included and you cancel before a sixth month begins.
Scenario 2: a one-month sampler
You identify six included games and plan a dedicated vacation month. The $9.99 Essential charge may beat buying six titles, but only if Essential contains every target game on your platform. If one title requires Premium, the relevant comparison is $14.99, not $9.99.

Scenario 3: one missing must-play game
Your list contains five games, but one is not included. Price that title separately, then compare: subscription cost plus the purchase price of the missing game versus buying all five. This mixed strategy often beats upgrading to a higher tier solely for one title, but verify the higher tier’s catalog and your expected months first.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Scenario 4: a sale arrives after subscribing
You subscribe for two months, then a favorite leaves the catalog or reaches a steep sale. If you want permanent access, use the subscriber discount if it is currently offered and buy before canceling. Add that purchase to your subscription total; do not treat the discount as a reason to ignore the original monthly charges.

Game Pass is recurring unless you stop future billing. Xbox requires cancellation in your account or on the console before the next billing date to prevent another charge. In your Microsoft account’s subscription settings, open the Game Pass entry, choose the manage option and follow the cancellation command displayed; console settings provide a corresponding subscription-management path. Record the next billing date when you start.
- Promotional renewal: a discounted first month can renew at the then-current price.
- Partial-month assumptions: estimate by billed months, not by the number of days you think you will play.
- Catalog removal: a game can leave before you finish, forcing a purchase or a rushed completion.
- Tier mismatch: the cheapest plan is irrelevant if your game or required feature is in another tier.
- Platform mismatch: a console listing does not prove that the PC version is included, and vice versa.
- Add-ons: expansions and premium editions may cost extra even when the base game is included.
A practical decision worksheet
Copy this table into a note for each comparison date:
| Backlog title | Platform and edition | Included plan today? | Individual price today | Expected play months | Keep permanently? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Game 1 | Console or PC; exact edition | Yes, no, or verify | Current store price | Number of billed months | Yes or no |
| Game 2 | Console or PC; exact edition | Yes, no, or verify | Current store price | Number of billed months | Yes or no |
| Game 3 | Console or PC; exact edition | Yes, no, or verify | Current store price | Number of billed months | Yes or no |
Then calculate three totals:
- Buy-all total: sum the individual prices.
- Pass-only total: plan price × billed months, counting only games confirmed in that plan.
- Mixed total: plan price × billed months + purchases for games that are missing, leaving the catalog or worth owning permanently.
Choose the scenario that fits both your budget and your access preference. A small numerical saving may not justify losing permanent access; a large catalog may not justify paying for months in which you barely play.

What the available price evidence does—and does not—show
The Microsoft Store listing’s 481 Game Pass-filtered items and one separately listed game at $39.99 demonstrate that individual prices and catalog entries coexist in the store. They do not represent an indie-only sample, establish an average indie price or prove a typical saving. No official source supplied a universal indie-game average or a comparative savings percentage.

That is why a title-specific worksheet is more reliable than a headline such as “Game Pass saves money after X games.” Your break-even point moves whenever a game goes on sale, a title leaves the catalog, a plan price changes or your completion time changes.
Final decision rules
- Buy first when your list is short, prices are discounted, you play slowly or permanent access matters.
- Subscribe first when several must-play titles are confirmed in one plan and you can finish them within a clearly defined short window.
- Use a mixed approach when one or two games are missing, a favorite is leaving, or you want to own only the titles you will replay.
- Recalculate whenever the catalog, sale price, plan price, platform or cloud-gaming terms change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I keep Game Pass games if I cancel?
No. Game Pass access lasts while the subscription is active and the title remains included. A separately purchased game remains available under the store’s normal account and platform terms.
Is it cheaper to buy indie games on sale?
Often for a small, slow backlog, but not automatically. Compare the exact sale prices with the plan price multiplied by the months you need, and include only confirmed catalog titles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes Game Pass include every game in the Xbox store?
No. Catalog size and availability vary by plan, platform, region and time. Check each title’s current listing.
Are cloud-gaming hours unlimited?
Starting in November 2026, Xbox announced monthly allocations of 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium and 5 for Essential. The announcement did not state the price of additional hours.
