Once you have a GEDP01 image in .iso or .gcm format, the desktop build runs natively on Windows, Apple-silicon Macs running macOS 13 or later, and Linux-based systems such as Steam Deck. A separate PS5 package runs as homebrew and requires a compatible homebrew-enabled console, an FTP server, and manual file copying.

What Eternal Darkness Recomp is—and the one requirement that determines compatibility
Eternal Darkness Recomp v0.9.3 is a static recompilation of Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, the 2002 GameCube game. The project translates the game for modern hardware instead of bundling Nintendo’s original data. Your own disc image supplies the program, graphics, sound, and music.
Every supported target uses the same regional requirement:

- Required: a legally obtained European/PAL GameCube disc image with the ID
GEDP01. - Accepted formats:
.isoor.gcm. - Not supported: the USA disc image
GEDE01, plus compressed formats such as RVZ and CISO for the PS5 launcher.
The desktop launcher rejects GEDE01, and the PS5 build cannot play it. Renaming a USA file or changing its extension will not make it compatible; the disc ID is part of the image data.
Use the release that matches your hardware. The project documentation describes native Windows x64, Apple-silicon macOS 13-or-newer, and x86-64 Linux builds, as well as a separate PS5 homebrew package.

Verify the region and ID
Check that your image is from the European/PAL release and identifies as GEDP01. The American release is GEDE01 and will fail on both desktop and PS5. If you acquired a physical European disc, create your own image using hardware and software you are legally allowed to use in your jurisdiction. The recomplication project does not provide the original game data.

Use an uncompressed ISO or GCM
Save the image as a file ending in .iso or .gcm. Do not place an RVZ or CISO file in the PS5 dump directory; the PS5 README specifically reports those formats as unsupported. Keep the filename simple and avoid putting the image inside an extra nested folder.
Keep a writable installation directory
On Windows, use a location such as Documents or a dedicated Games folder rather than Program Files. The first run creates translated/generated files, so the launcher needs permission to write beside the release.
Install on Windows PC
- Download the Windows x64 release of Eternal Darkness Recomp v0.9.3 and unzip it into a writable directory, for example
Documents ernalDarknessRecompor another Games folder. - Open the extracted project folder and locate the
dumpdirectory. Copy your European/PALGEDP01image into it. The file must be an.isoor.gcm. - Double-click
play.bat. The first launch translates the game and builds the generated files from the image. Let that process finish before closing the window. - If Windows SmartScreen appears, select More info, then Run anyway after confirming that you downloaded the release from the project’s official distribution.
- Launch
play.batagain for later sessions. The generated files are reused, so subsequent starts skip the initial translation.
Windows checks when nothing starts
- Confirm that
play.batanddumpare in the same extracted project folder. - Confirm the image is directly inside
dump, not inside a second folder. - Recheck the disc ID. A valid-looking filename does not prove that the image is
GEDP01. - Move the project out of a protected directory if Windows cannot create generated files.
Install on an Apple-silicon Mac
Supported Macs and macOS versions
The packaged Mac build targets Apple-silicon Macs running macOS 13 or later. The documented package is not presented as an Intel-native build, so an Intel Mac is outside the stated support target.

- Download and unzip the Mac release.
- Move
Eternal Darkness.appto your Applications folder. - On the first launch, right-click (or Control-click) the app and choose Open. macOS will show a warning because the application is not notarised.
- Choose Open again in the confirmation dialog. This approval is normally required only for the first launch.
- Drag your
GEDP01.isoor.gcmfile onto the application window. The app translates and builds the game; the README reports roughly one or two minutes for this first process. - After the build completes, close and reopen the app normally. Later starts use the generated files and should begin immediately.
Mac file locations
The optional texture packs use a Mac-specific directory: ~/Library/Application Support/Eternal Darkness/textures. This is different from the folder used by Windows and Linux releases. If macOS continues to block the app, repeat the right-click, Open procedure instead of double-clicking it.

Install on Linux and Steam Deck
Set up in Desktop Mode
- Switch the Steam Deck to Desktop Mode. The project supplies an x86-64 Linux tarball.
- Extract the tarball. The README suggests using Ark on Steam Deck; any archive utility that preserves the folder structure is suitable.
- Open the resulting
EternalDarknessRecompdirectory and place the European/PAL image directly in that folder. - Run
play.sh. The first start translates and builds the game. The README reports about one minute on a Deck, although storage and system load can change that. - Wait for the first build to finish. Subsequent starts use the generated files and go directly into the game.
Add it to Steam Game Mode
- While still in Desktop Mode, open Steam and choose Add a Non-Steam Game.
- Browse to the extracted project and select
play.sh. - Return to Game Mode and start the new library entry. Steam launches the script, so keep the script and its neighboring project files in place.
If the non-Steam shortcut stops working after you move the folder, edit the shortcut and browse to the new location of play.sh. The disc image must remain in the project directory for the launcher to find it.
Install the PS5 homebrew build
What the PS5 route requires
The PS5 version is homebrew-only; it is not a standard retail application. The PS5 README requires a console that can run homebrew, such as one configured with etaHEN and ShadowMountPlus, plus an FTP server listening on port 2121. Homebrew availability depends on your console’s firmware and setup, which are not specified by the project documentation.
Copy the release and image
- Download the PS5 release and unzip it. Inside, locate the folder named
PPSA99314. - Connect to the PS5’s FTP server on port
2121from a computer on the same network. - Upload the complete
PPSA99314folder to/data/homebrew/PPSA99314/. Preserve the folder name and its internal files. - Copy your European/PAL
GEDP01image, in.isoor.gcmformat, into/data/homebrew/PPSA99314/dump/. - Start Eternal Darkness from the PS5 home screen. The first start reads the program from the image in roughly one or two seconds, then the launcher presents New game.
PS5 launch failures
- The title is missing from the home screen: restart ShadowMountPlus or restart the console, then check the home screen again.
- “Disc: None found” appears: verify that the image is inside
/data/homebrew/PPSA99314/dump/, that it isGEDP01, and that it is an.isoor.gcm. RVZ and CISO images are not accepted by this launcher. - The folder was copied incorrectly: check for accidental nesting such as
PPSA99314/PPSA99314/. The expected path contains onePPSA99314directory directly under/data/homebrew/.
Optional HD texture packs
The projects document two downloadable DDS texture packs. They are optional; the recomp works without them.

Download and unpack both packs. Place their unpacked folders side by side inside a directory named textures. The PAL supplement is intentionally allowed to contain overlapping files; its versions should be used where it overlaps the main pack.

Texture packs are detected at startup. If the launcher reports No pack, close the game, verify the exact directory and side-by-side folder layout, then restart. Installing files while the game is already running will not force a new scan.

The project documentation lists enhancements beyond the original GameCube presentation. These are documented capabilities rather than independently measured performance results.
Rendering and display
- Rendering at the display’s native resolution, up to 4K.
- The game’s native widescreen mode.
- Frame interpolation for displays running at 90 Hz, 120 Hz, or faster.
- Fast-forwarded cutscenes.
- Sharp baked shadows and redrawn text.
Camera and controls

- Controller-specific button prompts.
Saves and launcher behavior
- Save-anywhere slots.
- A launcher that handles the initial translation and subsequent starts.
The PS5 README additionally documents 4K output at 60 frames per second and an optional 120 Hz output mode. The desktop and PS5 documentation describe broadly similar camera, texture, control, and save features, but the published material does not provide independent frame-rate testing for individual PC or Deck configurations.

Choose Windows when you want the simplest desktop setup
Windows requires only an extracted folder, a GEDP01 image in dump, and play.bat. It is the most direct route if you already use a Windows controller and do not need Steam Game Mode integration.

Choose Mac when you have Apple silicon
The Mac package is convenient after the one-time Gatekeeper approval: drag the image onto the app, wait for the initial build, and reopen it later. Confirm that the Mac is Apple silicon and running macOS 13 or newer before troubleshooting an unsupported configuration.
Choose Steam Deck/Linux for portable play
The Deck needs a short Desktop Mode setup and a non-Steam shortcut for Game Mode, but the README reports a roughly one-minute first build and direct launches afterward. It is the natural choice when you want handheld play without a PS5 homebrew environment.
Choose PS5 only if your console already supports homebrew
The PS5 build offers the documented 4K/60 and optional 120 Hz modes, but installation is substantially more involved: homebrew, ShadowMountPlus, an FTP server, exact remote paths, and a compatible GEDP01 image are all required. It is not a plug-and-play retail installation.

Troubleshooting checklist
The launcher rejects the image
- Check the image’s disc ID: it must be
GEDP01, notGEDE01. - Check the extension: use
.isoor.gcm. - Place the image in the platform’s exact location: desktop
dump, Linux project folder, or PS5/data/homebrew/PPSA99314/dump/. - Remove extra nesting and restart the launcher.
The first build appears stuck
Do not interrupt the initial translation. Windows and Linux create generated files during this stage; the Mac README estimates one or two minutes, and the Deck README about one minute. If the process repeatedly hangs, restart once and then inspect the project’s report process below.
Mac says the app cannot be opened
Right-click the application, select Open, and select Open again in the warning dialog. A normal double-click may continue to be blocked because the package is not notarised.
Textures do not appear
Ensure both unpacked texture folders are inside the correct textures directory, with the PAL supplement beside the main pack. Confirm the platform-specific path, then restart because detection occurs at startup.
A crash or hang needs reporting
The projects ask users to provide files from saves/reports/ together with a description of what happened. Preserve the report files produced by the failing launch and include the platform, the image format, and the step at which the failure occurred.
