To install the Xbox app on Windows, first open Start and search for Xbox. Microsoft says the app is pre-installed on most Windows 11 devices, so you may only need to launch it and sign in. If it is not listed, install it through the official Xbox PC app listing or Microsoft Store, then sign in with the Microsoft account you want to use for Xbox.
You do not need a Game Pass subscription to install or open the app. Game Pass is an optional service inside the app; its catalog, cloud-gaming support, pricing and availability depend on the current plan and your region.

What you need before installing the Xbox app
The setup is normally straightforward, but a few account and device conditions determine whether the install control appears.
- A Windows PC that meets the current requirements shown on the Xbox PC app listing. Requirements and supported versions can change, so use the current Microsoft listing rather than relying on an old minimum-specification guide.
- Access to Microsoft Store, unless you install through the official Xbox PC app page that hands the installation to Windows.
- A Microsoft account for signing in to Xbox. The account used for Windows, Microsoft Store and Xbox does not have to be the same in every situation, but using the intended Xbox account avoids library, entitlement and family-setting confusion.
- An internet connection for downloading the app, updates and games. Individual games can have their own storage, connection and hardware requirements.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 gaming overview, published May 20, 2026, says the Xbox PC app is pre-installed on most Windows 11 devices. “Most” is not a guarantee for every edition, organization-managed computer or customized installation, so checking Start is the fastest first step.

How do I install the Xbox app on Windows?
1. Check whether it is already installed
- Open Start.
- Type Xbox in the search box.
- Select the Xbox app if it appears in the results.
If Xbox opens, skip the download steps and continue to signing in. You can right-click the result and choose the available pinning option if you want easier access from Start or the taskbar. The exact shortcut labels can vary by Windows build.
2. Install from the official Xbox PC app page
Open Microsoft’s official Xbox PC app page and choose its download or install control. Windows may open Microsoft Store or display a handoff prompt. Follow the on-screen instructions, then wait for the app to finish installing. Avoid third-party installer packages: they are not needed for this setup and can be outdated or modified.
3. Install through Microsoft Store
- Open Microsoft Store from Start.
- Use the Store search field and search for Xbox.
- Open the Xbox app listing published by Microsoft.
- Select the Get, Install or equivalent download control shown for your device.
- When installation finishes, select Open, or search Start for Xbox.
Microsoft’s general Store guidance also describes installing an app from My Library. If the Xbox listing is already associated with your account, open Store, go to Library or My Library (the label depends on the Store version), find Xbox and use the available install control.
Which installation route should you use?

There is no separate hardware choice required to install the app. A controller, headset or gaming PC upgrade is not a prerequisite for installation.
How to set up the Xbox app after installation
Launch Xbox and choose the correct account
- Open Start and select Xbox.
- When prompted, select Sign in.
- Enter the Microsoft account you intend to use for Xbox games, subscriptions, friends and saved entitlements.
- Complete any security verification requested by Microsoft.
Take a moment to confirm the account before downloading anything. A different Microsoft account can have a different game ownership history, subscription status, friends list and family permissions. If the app opens under the wrong account, use its account menu to sign out and sign in again with the intended one.

Explore the main areas
The Xbox PC app is a hub for discovering, downloading, launching and managing PC games. Depending on your account, region, device and current app version, you may see areas for:
- Installed games and recently played titles.
- Games available for purchase or download.
- Game Pass browsing and subscription management.
- Updates and management controls for installed games.
- Friends, messaging, party or other social and chat functions.
- Cloud gaming for supported console games where the feature is offered and your account and plan qualify.
These categories do not mean every game or feature is available to every reader. A title may be PC-only, console-only, unavailable in your country, excluded from a particular plan or subject to separate hardware requirements. Treat the availability shown in your signed-in app as the current authority.

Set practical preferences before downloading games
Browse the app’s settings and installation options before starting a large download. Depending on the current build, you may be able to choose an installation drive, review notifications or manage update behavior. The labels and options can change, so follow the controls displayed in your version rather than an older screenshot.
Check available storage in Windows first. The Xbox app can start a download, but the game itself may require substantially more space than the app. Keep additional room for updates and temporary installation files.
Do I need Game Pass to use the Xbox app?
No. Installing, opening and signing in to the Xbox app does not require a Game Pass subscription. You can use the app to discover and manage games available through your account, including titles you own or obtain separately.

Game Pass is an optional next step for people who want to browse or play the games included with a plan. Microsoft’s Xbox pages describe Game Pass browsing in the PC app and cloud gaming for supported console games, but the exact catalog, plan terms, supported devices, cloud availability and regional access can change. Review the current plan details in your region before subscribing. Do not assume that a Game Pass listing means every game can be installed on Windows or played through the cloud.

Xbox is missing from Start
- Search Start for Xbox again and check both apps and all-results views.
- Open Microsoft Store and search for the Microsoft-published Xbox listing.
- If Store search does not return a usable listing, use Microsoft’s official Xbox PC app page and follow its install control.
- Restart Windows if the computer recently installed updates, then repeat the search.
Do not download an unofficial executable simply because the app is absent from Start. A missing shortcut does not prove that Windows lacks the app, and an official Store or Xbox page is the safer recovery route.
Microsoft Store itself is missing
Search Start for Microsoft Store. Microsoft says Store may not be available when Windows is signed in with a local account, or when a work-managed device has Store disabled by an administrator.
- On a personal PC, check whether Windows is using a Microsoft account rather than only a local Windows account.
- On a work or school PC, ask the administrator whether Store access is intentionally blocked. Do not try to bypass an organization policy.
- If Store is present but search is failing, continue with the Store troubleshooting steps below.
How to fix a blocked or failed Xbox installation
Work through these checks in order. The cause is often account, policy, compatibility or Store state rather than the Xbox app package itself.
1. Confirm the Microsoft account
Make sure the account shown in Microsoft Store is authorized to install apps and is the account you expect to use in Xbox. Signing into Xbox with one account while Store is using another can make ownership, family permissions or install controls appear inconsistent.

2. Restart after Windows updates
If Windows recently downloaded or installed an update, restart the PC before trying again. A pending restart can leave Store services or app registration in an incomplete state.
3. Check region and availability
Microsoft Store availability and individual app or game listings can vary by country or region. Confirm that your Windows region, Microsoft account region and the current Store listing are consistent. Do not change region solely to obtain an item that is not offered in your market; regional terms and access can differ.
4. Check family settings
Family controls can restrict app installation, purchases or content access. If the account is part of a Microsoft family group, the family organizer may need to approve the installation or adjust the applicable restriction.
5. Check device compatibility
If the listing shows no install control, read the compatibility message instead of repeatedly selecting the page. The device, Windows edition, architecture, available storage or other requirement may not qualify. The current Microsoft listing is the source of truth for supported configurations.
6. Reset Microsoft Store with wsreset.exe
Microsoft documents Store reset as a troubleshooting step:

- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
wsreset.exe. - Select OK or press Enter.
- Wait while Windows resets the Store cache and reopens Microsoft Store.
- Search for Xbox and try the installation again.
This reset is not a guaranteed fix. It is intended to clear Store cache problems; it does not override region restrictions, administrator policies, family controls or incompatible hardware.
7. Try again from the official route
After the checks above, return to the official Xbox PC app page or Microsoft Store listing. If one route is not displaying correctly, the other may provide a clearer error message or handoff.
8. Escalate persistent failures
If Xbox still will not install, use Microsoft Support or Xbox Support and include the exact error code, Windows version, whether the PC is managed, the account type and what happened after running wsreset.exe. Those details help support distinguish an account, Store, policy or compatibility problem. Avoid unofficial installers and random command scripts offered by unrelated sites.

The Xbox app is therefore more than an installer, but it is not a guarantee of access to every Xbox title or service. The signed-in app and the current Microsoft and Xbox service pages show what your account and location can use.
