Most Minecraft Java Edition players do not need to install Java manually. The official Minecraft Launcher normally manages the runtime required by the game. You usually need a separate Java installation only when using a third-party launcher, a modpack or custom profile, an older setup, or a manually hosted server—or when an error says that Java cannot be found or the wrong version is being used.
First: do you actually need to install Java?
“Java Edition” describes the edition of Minecraft. It does not automatically mean that Java must be installed globally on your computer.

Official Minecraft Launcher
For the standard, unmodified game, start with the official launcher. Mojang’s Java 17 transition guidance says that the default launcher downloads the compatible runtime automatically. Installing or updating system Java may therefore have no effect on the runtime used by the launcher.
If the official launcher works, there is normally nothing else to install. If you manually selected a Java executable in a profile, remove that custom override or replace it with a compatible version. Launcher updates can be checked at Settings → About; updating the launcher is separate from updating system Java. See the official Minecraft downloads page.

Third-party launchers and modded Minecraft
Third-party launchers may use a system Java installation or a Java executable selected in their settings. Mod loaders and modpacks can also require a particular Java major version. Do not install the newest release automatically: an old modpack may require Java 8, another setup may require Java 17, and a newer environment may explicitly support Java 21 or another version.
Use the requirement stated by your launcher, mod loader, modpack, or error message. Mojang’s Java 17 change applied to Minecraft 1.18-era custom Java setups; it is not proof that every current or future Minecraft release universally requires Java 17. Mojang’s Java 17 announcement explains the transition.

A Minecraft server that you start yourself is different from the client in the official launcher. The server administrator must install a suitable Java runtime and choose which executable starts the server. Download server software from Minecraft’s official downloads page, then follow the server software or mod-loader documentation for its Java requirement.
Java, JRE, and JDK: what should you download?
- JRE: the runtime components needed to run Java applications.
- JDK: the runtime plus developer tools such as the Java compiler and debugging utilities.
Minecraft needs Java runtime functionality, not development tools. However, many modern vendors distribute a JDK rather than a separate JRE, and a compatible JDK is generally sufficient for Minecraft. Oracle explains the distinction in its Java SE product overview.
Which Java version does Minecraft need?
There is no single Java version that is correct for every Minecraft installation. The required major version depends on:
- the Minecraft release;
- the launcher and its runtime-selection rules;
- the mod loader;
- the modpack and individual mods; and
- the server software, if you are hosting a server.
The official launcher normally handles this itself. For a custom setup, identify the requirement before downloading anything. “Latest” does not mean “compatible.” As of August 2026, Oracle lists Java 26 as its latest Java SE release, Java 25 as its current LTS line, Java 21 as the previous LTS line, and Java 17 as an older LTS line. Those are Java-platform release facts, not Minecraft recommendations. Check Oracle’s current release list or select a required major version from Eclipse Temurin.

Check whether Java is installed
Open a new terminal or command window and run:
java -version
This reports the Java runtime selected through your system PATH. It does not prove that the official Minecraft Launcher or a third-party launcher uses the same runtime.
Find the selected executable
On Windows, use Command Prompt or PowerShell:
where java
On macOS or Linux:
which java
If several locations are listed, your PATH contains multiple Java installations. A launcher can still use a different executable selected in its own settings.
On macOS, list installed JDKs with:
/usr/libexec/java_home -V
To test a particular installed major version, replace 17 with the version you need:
/usr/libexec/java_home -v 17
How to install Java on Windows
- Identify the required Java major version from your launcher, modpack, server guide, or error message.
- Choose the correct architecture: Windows x64 for most PCs, or ARM64 for a supported Windows-on-ARM system.
- Download an installer from a trusted vendor, such as Eclipse Temurin or Oracle. Avoid unofficial “Minecraft Java” download sites.
- Prefer an installer over a compressed archive unless you specifically need a portable installation.
- Run the installer and accept the default location unless you have a reason to customize it. The documented Oracle Windows installer requires administrator privileges.
- Close any existing Command Prompt or PowerShell windows, open a new one, and verify the installation:
java -version
where java
If Windows says that java is not recognized, Java may not have been added to PATH, or the old terminal may have stale environment variables. Use the full path to java.exe in your launcher, or add the installation’s bin folder to PATH only when necessary. Oracle notes that installing its consumer JRE does not necessarily update the java -version command or PATH, so always verify rather than assuming the installer changed your active runtime.

If you have multiple JDKs, inspect them with:
/usr/libexec/java_home -V
A typical JDK executable may be located at:
/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/<jdk-folder>/Contents/Home/bin/java
Replace the placeholder with the actual folder name when selecting Java in a third-party launcher. Minecraft’s current published PC information lists macOS 12 or newer and ARM64 support; these are operating-system and architecture requirements, not a declaration that you must install a particular system JDK. See the official PC requirements.
How to install Java on Linux
Linux package names vary by distribution and Java major version, so do not copy a package command intended for a different release.

Use the distribution repository when it offers the required version:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install <package-name>
Verify the result:
java -version
which java
Fedora, RHEL, and other RPM-based systems
Use the package manager and package name appropriate to your exact distribution and required Java line. Consult that distribution’s documentation rather than assuming that a Debian package name will work.
Distribution-independent installation
You can download a compatible archive or package from Temurin or Oracle’s installation documentation, then point the launcher directly to the Java executable. A common location is:
/usr/lib/jvm/<jdk-folder>/bin/java
Temurin also documents package routes for Debian, RPM, Alpine, SLES, Homebrew, WinGet, and SDKMAN. Availability and package names can change with the distribution.
How to update Java without breaking Minecraft
Update the Java installation that your launcher or server actually uses—not merely one that appears in your operating system.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Record the current version with
java -version. - Record the selected executable with
where javaon Windows orwhich javaon macOS and Linux. - Check the Minecraft version, mod loader, modpack, or server requirement.
- Download a compatible build from the same trusted vendor or another compatible OpenJDK distribution.
- Install it without immediately deleting the old installation.
- Restart the terminal and launcher, then verify the version again.
- Test the game, modded instance, or server.
- Remove the old runtime only after confirming that every profile and server still works.
Keeping Java 8, 17, 21, or another required line installed side by side is normal for modded Minecraft. If an update breaks a working modpack, select the previous executable again and follow the modpack’s documentation.

How to select Java in a third-party launcher
Interface names differ between launchers and versions, but the workflow is usually:
- Open the launcher’s settings or the settings for the specific instance.
- Find an option named Java, Runtime, Java executable, or similar.
- Select the executable for the required Java major version.
- Save the setting and launch the instance.
- Read the launcher log if it still fails; it often identifies the Java path and version actually used.
Typical paths are examples only:
| System | Possible executable path |
|---|---|
| Windows | C:Program FilesJava<jdk-folder>binjavaw.exeC:Program FilesEclipse Adoptium<jdk-folder>binjavaw.exe |
| macOS | /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/<jdk-folder>/Contents/Home/bin/java |
| Linux | /usr/lib/jvm/<jdk-folder>/bin/java |
Do not assume that every launcher has the same menu path. If the official launcher is working with its managed runtime, changing system PATH is not the first fix.

How to start a Minecraft server with a specific Java version
When multiple Java versions are installed, use the full executable path so the server cannot accidentally select the wrong one.
Windows example:
"C:Program FilesEclipse Adoptiumjdk-21binjava.exe" -Xmx4G -Xms2G -jar server.jar nogui
macOS or Linux example:
"/path/to/jdk/bin/java" -Xmx4G -Xms2G -jar server.jar nogui
Replace the path and server.jar with your actual values. -Xmx4G sets the maximum Java heap to 4 GB, while -Xms2G sets the starting heap to 2 GB. These values are examples, not universal recommendations; follow your server software or mod-loader documentation and leave memory for the operating system.
Troubleshooting Java and Minecraft
“Java is not recognized”
- Java may not be installed.
- The terminal was open before installation; open a new one.
- Java is installed but not on PATH.
- You installed the wrong architecture.
- Your launcher uses a separate bundled or selected runtime.
Run java -version, then use the full executable path in the launcher if necessary. Do not change PATH simply because the official launcher does not expose system Java.

- [Specification] ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = Unbuffered UDIMM, CL=16, Number of Pins = 288 Pins, Voltage = 1.35V
- [Overclocking] Intel XMP 2.0 and AMD Ryzen
The launcher still uses the old Java version
The official launcher may be using its bundled runtime. Otherwise, a custom profile may still point to the old executable, or PATH may contain several Java entries. Check where java or which java, inspect the launcher’s Java setting, remove an unwanted custom override, and restart the launcher.
A newer Java version broke a modpack
The mod loader, a mod, or a native library may require an older major version. Restore the previously working Java version, select it explicitly, and keep separate runtimes for separate instances when needed. Do not uninstall every older Java installation.
Minecraft crashes after Java installation
Java may not be the cause. Also investigate graphics drivers, available RAM, unsupported hardware or operating systems, corrupt game files, mod conflicts, and incorrect JVM arguments. Mojang’s system-requirements guidance says below-minimum hardware may launch but is not guaranteed to perform correctly and may encounter future launch or rendering problems.
Installing the newest Java did not improve performance
Java version updates are not a general performance upgrade. First identify the runtime actually used, then investigate graphics settings, drivers, memory allocation, mods, and hardware. A newer Java release can also be incompatible with an older Minecraft or modded setup.
Which Java distribution should you use?
| Option | Strength | Main caution |
|---|---|---|
| Official launcher runtime | Least configuration for vanilla players | May not appear as system Java |
| Eclipse Temurin | Broad version and platform selection for launchers and servers | You must choose the correct major version |
| Oracle JDK | Oracle-maintained distribution and documentation | Check current licensing for commercial or production use |
| Operating-system package | Convenient updates integrated with the OS | Version availability and package names vary |
Final checklist
- Confirm whether you use the official launcher, a third-party launcher, or a server.
- Identify the required Java major version instead of choosing the newest one blindly.
- Match the package to your CPU architecture.
- Download only from a trusted vendor or your distribution’s package repository.
- Run
java -versionafter installation. - Check the executable path with
where javaorwhich java. - Point the relevant launcher or server to the intended executable.
- Test the game before uninstalling the older runtime.
Mojang’s published requirements, updated July 21, 2026 and reflected on its current requirements pages in August 2026, list Java Edition support for 64-bit Windows 10, Windows on ARM, macOS 12 or newer, and 64-bit Linux, with x64 and ARM64 targets. Those are Minecraft operating-system and hardware requirements—not a requirement to install a particular system JDK. See the current Minecraft Java Edition system requirements.
