Insert the Silent Hill 2 Remake PS5 disc into a PS5 with a working disc drive. The console installs the game automatically the first time you play it. After installation, select the game from the Games home screen. Keep the disc inserted whenever you play because the disc is used to verify the physical license.

Before you insert the disc
Confirm that your PS5 can read physical games
You need a PS5 model with a functioning disc drive. A Digital Edition without a compatible drive cannot accept the Silent Hill 2 Remake disc, so inserting the game is not possible on that hardware. If the drive has previously failed to read other discs, resolve that problem before troubleshooting this particular game.

The PS5 copies the playable installation to its internal storage rather than running the entire game directly from the optical disc. Check available console storage before starting. The exact installation size is not stated in the official material available for this title, and the space required can change when an update is released. Leave more free space than the initial copy appears to need so the console can stage update files safely.

Decide whether you will install offline
Sony’s disc-game guidance says the game installs automatically the first time you play it; it does not identify an internet connection as a requirement for copying the base installation from the disc. That means the disc provides the installation data. Internet access becomes important when you want patches, automatic updates, online services, or any content that must be downloaded. Initial PS5 setup, account sign-in, and system software requirements are separate from the game-disc installation and can depend on your console’s setup state.
Install Silent Hill 2 Remake from the PS5 disc
- Start the PS5. Sign in to the profile you use for games, then wait for the Games home screen.
- Insert the disc. Put the Silent Hill 2 Remake disc into the PS5’s disc slot. The game tile should appear on the home screen.
- Allow the automatic installation to begin. Sony states that a disc game installs automatically the first time you play it. The console copies the required data to storage; you do not need to find a separate installer.
- Wait for the installation to finish. Do not eject the disc or shut down the console while the copy is in progress. If the game tile shows that installation is still running, let that process complete before treating a launch problem as an update problem.
- Launch the game. When installation completes, select the game tile from Games home and start it. If the PS5 offers a system-software prompt, complete that separately from the game installation.
- Leave the disc in the drive. The physical license is checked through the disc. The installed files remain on the SSD, but the console still expects the matching disc whenever you start a play session.
What works without an internet connection?
The disc installation and the download of an update are different operations. The first is a copy from the physical media; the second retrieves newer files from PlayStation’s network. Sony’s published disc instructions establish automatic installation but do not publish a requirement that the base copy be online. If you are offline, you can begin with the version available on the disc, subject to the normal setup and licensing state of your PS5.
Without internet access, the console cannot check for or download a newer game version. You also cannot use automatic updates, because those depend on a network connection while the PS5 is in Rest Mode. Reconnect the console before attempting a manual check or expecting a queued update to finish.

Update the game manually
A manual check is the quickest way to request the newest version currently available to your console.
- On Games home, highlight the installed Silent Hill 2 Remake tile. Do not open the game yet.
- Press the controller’s Options button.
- Select Check for Update.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. If an update is offered, allow the download and installation to complete before launching the game.
Sony’s update guidance says that starting a game or app automatically updates it to the newest available version. The manual command is useful when you want to check immediately, when a download did not start in the background, or when you have just reinstalled the game.
The official information available for this title does not establish a current patch number, download size, or installation time. Do not rely on a fixed number from an undated guide: the answer can change with each release and with the console’s existing data.

Enable automatic updates in Rest Mode
Automatic updates let the PS5 download or install a newer game version while the console is not being used. They only work when the console can stay connected to the internet in Rest Mode.

- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Go to Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Open Automatic Updates.
- Turn on Auto-Download. This allows available update data to be retrieved without a manual check.
- Turn on Auto-Install in Rest Mode if you want the console to apply eligible updates while it is resting.
- In the PS5’s Rest Mode power settings, enable the option to keep the console connected to the internet. Without that connection, the automatic-update switches cannot retrieve new files.
Automatic updating does not remove the disc check. After an update has installed, insert the same disc when you want to play the physical edition.
Why a PS5 disc game may not update
The Check for Update command is missing
- Confirm that you highlighted the game tile rather than an unrelated activity card or a shortcut.
- Make sure the disc is inserted and that the initial installation has finished. A partially copied game may not present the same update controls as a completed installation.
- Restart the PS5 and try the Options menu again. A restart can clear a temporary home-screen or network state without deleting the game.
The check runs but no download starts
- Verify that the PS5 is connected to the internet and that other network activity is working.
- Check that there is enough free console storage for the update and its temporary working files. The required amount is not fixed in the published title information.
- Leave the console connected and retry Options > Check for Update. A check can report that no newer package is available, which is different from a failed download.
The update downloads but will not install
First allow the download to finish, then restart the console and run the check again. If the installation repeatedly fails, use Sony’s documented recovery action: delete the game installation and reinstall it from the Game Library or from the game disc. Deleting the application removes the installed game files; protect or synchronize saved data according to your usual PS5 backup practice before doing so.

The disc is not recognized
- Eject the disc and inspect it for fingerprints, dust, or visible damage. Wipe it gently with a soft, lint-free cloth from the center toward the edge.
- Reinsert the disc and restart the PS5. A temporary read error can prevent both installation and update checks.
- If the PS5 also rejects other known-good game discs, the console drive may need service. If only this disc fails after cleaning and restarting, the disc itself may be defective.
Rest Mode updates never arrive
- Return to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates and confirm that Auto-Download is enabled.
- Confirm that Auto-Install in Rest Mode is enabled if you expect installation to happen while resting.
- Check the power-saving settings and enable the feature that keeps the PS5 connected to the internet in Rest Mode.
- Use a manual Check for Update after waking the console. This distinguishes a settings problem from a situation where no newer version is currently offered.
Reinstall the game when an update remains broken
Reinstallation is the official recovery step when an update will not install after ordinary checks.
- Highlight Silent Hill 2 Remake on Games home.
- Press Options and choose the command to delete the installed game.
- When the application has been removed, insert the game disc again. The PS5 should begin the automatic disc installation, or you can open the title from your Game Library and choose the available install option.
- Wait for the base installation to complete.
- With the disc still inserted, highlight the game, press Options, choose Check for Update, and install any available update.
If the update still fails after a clean reinstall, Sony’s guidance is to contact PlayStation Support. Have the console model, the disc edition, the exact error message, and the point at which the process fails available when you ask for help.

Both editions ultimately use console storage and both need network access for patches. The disc edition’s main trade-off is the continuing disc check; its advantage is that the base installation data is supplied on physical media.
Regional add-ons and edition checks
If you buy downloadable content or another add-on, check that the product region matches the disc edition and the PlayStation account storefront you intend to use. A disc and an account from different regions may not share add-on entitlement even when the game title is the same. The official installation guidance does not list a universal region combination for every release, so confirm the region shown on the product packaging and in the store before buying an add-on.

There is no authoritative, permanently current patch number, download size, or installation-time figure established for this workflow. Patch packages change, storage conditions differ, and download speed depends on the network. A guide that promises one universal number will become inaccurate when the game or console software changes. Use the PS5’s own update check to determine what your installation currently needs.
The practical rule for every session
Install once from the inserted disc, update with Options > Check for Update when needed, and enable automatic downloads if the PS5 can remain online in Rest Mode. Keep the disc inserted for play. If an update repeatedly refuses to install, delete the game, reinstall it from the disc or Game Library, check again, and contact PlayStation Support if the failure continues.
