To install a Fabric modpack on a Minecraft server, make every layer agree: the exact Minecraft release, Fabric Loader version, Java runtime, mod versions, and declared dependencies. Create a clean server directory, install the matching Fabric launcher, start it once to generate the server files and EULA prompt, then place only server-compatible mod JARs and their dependencies in mods. Keep client-only files on players’ computers. If the server stops, the first dependency, version, or Java error in the log usually identifies the fix.

What must match before you install
Fabric does not make a modpack version-agnostic. A pack built for one Minecraft patch can fail on another even when the difference looks minor. Record the values from the pack manifest or its distribution page before downloading anything:

- Fabric Loader version: the loader range or precise version requested by the pack.
- Java version: the runtime required by that Minecraft release.
- Mod set and dependencies: the server-compatible JARs and the versions they require.
- Environment: whether each file is intended for a dedicated server, a client, or both.
Fabric’s current guidance recommends Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17 through 1.20.4 and Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer. Older Minecraft releases have their own Java requirements, so do not apply either recommendation to an older pack without checking its version-specific guidance.

Choose the launcher installation method
Executable Fabric Server Launcher
For most installations, use the official executable server launcher JAR for the selected Minecraft and Fabric versions. Fabric describes it as an executable JAR that downloads missing Fabric Loader and Minecraft files, then starts the game server. You normally need only the launcher, the correct Java command, and an empty directory with write permission.

This route is convenient on a local machine, a VPS, or a host that lets you select a custom JAR. The launcher creates or retrieves the server JAR and libraries it needs, so keep the launcher file when moving the installation.
Fabric Installer, Server tab
Use the Fabric Installer’s Server tab when a host requires separate server files or when you want to control the generated layout yourself. The manual method creates a Fabric launcher, a Minecraft server JAR, and a libraries directory. Upload all of those items together; uploading only one JAR can leave a remote panel unable to start the server.

The two methods produce the same kind of Fabric server. The important difference is whether one executable launcher obtains the missing files for you or whether you must retain and transfer the complete generated installation.
Step 1: Create a clean server directory
Make a new folder locally or an empty directory on the VPS or game-server host. A clean directory prevents an old Forge installation, stale loader, or unrelated mod from contaminating the test.
- Back up any existing world before changing Minecraft, loader, Java, or mod files.
- Do not point the first test at a production world. Generate a temporary world until the pack starts reliably.
- Give the account running the server read and write access to the directory.
- Keep the pack manifest and a text list of the files you installed so you can reproduce the setup.
On a remote host, the equivalent is an empty instance or a new server directory. Do not delete an established world merely to solve a loader problem; move the world aside and test the installation separately.
Step 2: Install and verify the required Java runtime
Install the Java edition required by the exact Minecraft version, then verify which executable your shell or host panel will use. A machine can have several Java versions installed; installing the right one is not enough if the start script still resolves java to an older binary.

- Check the pack’s Minecraft version and apply the matching Fabric guidance: Java 17 for 1.17–1.20.4, Java 21 for 1.20.5 and newer.
- Open a terminal or the host’s console and run
java -version. - Confirm that the reported major version is the one required by the pack.
- If the version is wrong, select the correct Java installation in the host panel or use its full executable path in your start script.
An “unsupported class version,” “class file has wrong version,” or similar message means the Java runtime and compiled game or mod code disagree. Fix Java first; replacing random mods will not correct that mismatch.
Step 3: Install Fabric and launch it once
Using the executable launcher
Place the downloaded Fabric server launcher in the clean directory. Use the command supplied for your selected versions; the common form is:
java -Xmx2G -jar <fabric-server-launcher>.jar noguiReplace the angle-bracketed filename with the actual launcher name. -Xmx2G sets a 2 GB maximum heap for an example installation; choose a value appropriate to the pack and the memory available on the machine. The command’s nogui option runs the server without a graphical window, which is normal for a VPS and most hosts.
Using the manual installer
Run the Fabric Installer, select the Server tab, choose the exact Minecraft and Loader versions, and target the clean directory. Retain the generated Fabric launcher, server JAR, and libraries folder. Start the generated launcher with the same Java command style rather than invoking the vanilla server JAR directly.
Accept the EULA after the first run
The first launch creates files and normally stops with an EULA prompt. Open eula.txt, read the linked agreement, and change eula=false to eula=true only if you accept it. Start the same command again. You should then see the server create items such as server.properties, a world directory, logs, and the mods directory (create mods yourself if that version does not generate it).
Step 4: Assemble the server-side modpack
Prefer a server pack when one is supplied
Some modpack authors publish a dedicated server bundle. It may include the Fabric launcher, server JAR, libraries, configuration directories, scripts, datapacks, and a curated mods folder. Use that bundle when available because it has already separated files that belong on a dedicated server from files intended only for a client.

After extracting it into the clean directory, compare its Minecraft and Loader versions with your notes. Do not merge two different server bundles or copy an older libraries folder over a newer installation without a documented reason.
If there is no server bundle
Build the server set from the pack’s manifest and the individual mod metadata. Put each Fabric-compatible server JAR and its required dependencies in the server’s mods directory. Fabric states that most mods also require Fabric API; place the Fabric API JAR in that same directory, using the version compatible with both your Minecraft release and loader.

Copy only directories the pack identifies as part of the server installation. A client profile’s entire .minecraft directory is not a server pack.
Check every JAR before starting
- The file is a Fabric build, not a Forge or another-loader build.
- The Minecraft version in the file metadata or download listing matches the server.
- The mod supports the Java Edition release you are running.
- Required libraries and APIs are present at compatible versions.
- You have not placed duplicate versions of the same mod in
mods.
Step 5: Keep client-only mods off the dedicated server
Fabric mod metadata distinguishes client and server environments. A mod marked client-only can be present in a player’s instance while being invalid on a dedicated server. OptiFine and OptiFabric are explicit examples: keep them on clients only and do not copy them into the server’s mods folder.
The same rule applies to visual enhancements, shader loaders, HUD and minimap interfaces, menu replacements, replay tools, and other files whose authors document no server component. When a mod offers separate client and server JARs, install the server component only where the author specifies.
Do not infer compatibility from a filename. Read the mod page or metadata for the exact Minecraft release and environment. If a supposedly client-only mod is in a published server bundle, follow the bundle’s instructions or remove it only after confirming that it is not required by a server-side feature.

Step 6: Start, read the log, and test one client
Restart with the same Java executable, memory options, launcher filename, and nogui setting used for the first run. Watch the console and logs/latest.log from the beginning of startup. Fabric Loader reports discovered mods and normally identifies the first unmet requirement before the final shutdown message.
Do not change several files at once. Record the first meaningful error, stop the server, make one targeted change, and start again. The final line may say only that the server stopped; the actionable cause is usually earlier in the stack trace.
Before inviting players, install the matching Fabric profile on one client and add the client-required files from the same pack version. Join the test server and verify that the world loads, commands work, expected content appears, and the console remains free of repeating errors. Test a backup and a clean restart before putting the address in public.
Remote host and VPS checklist
A remote installation adds file-transfer and startup concerns but does not change Fabric’s compatibility rules.
- Java selection: the panel or container must expose the required Java 17 or Java 21 runtime, or the older runtime required by an older Minecraft release.
- Startup command: the panel must invoke the Fabric launcher, not the vanilla server JAR. A server that starts vanilla will ignore Fabric mods even when every file is present.
- Complete transfer: with the manual method, upload the Fabric launcher, server JAR,
server.properties, and the entirelibrariesdirectory, in addition to the world, configs, andmods. - File access: use SFTP or the host’s file manager to verify that JARs are in the server root’s
modsfolder, not in a nested extraction folder. - Memory: leave headroom for the operating system and the pack; do not assign the machine’s entire RAM to Java.
- Backups: schedule world and configuration backups before changing loader or mod versions.
On a Minecraft-specific control panel, the Fabric launcher can often replace the vanilla server JAR in the selected installation or be named in the start script. The exact label varies, so verify the command shown by the panel rather than assuming a file upload changed the startup target.

Unsupported Java or class-version error
Check java -version from the same account and startup script that runs the server. Select Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17–1.20.4 or Java 21 for 1.20.5 and newer, unless the exact older release has different guidance. Correct the path in the panel or script, then retry before touching the mod list.

“Incompatible mod set” or missing dependency
Read the loader message and compare it with the pack manifest. Add the exact dependency version requested, or replace the mod with a build for your Minecraft and Fabric versions. Fabric Loader’s documented behavior is to fail launch when it cannot satisfy a mod’s dependencies; that is a useful safety check, not evidence that the whole installation is corrupt.
The server crashes immediately after copying a client pack
Remove client-only files first, especially OptiFine, OptiFabric, shader and visual components, and retry. If the server then starts, add only files whose metadata explicitly supports the server environment.
Mods appear to be ignored
Confirm that the files are JARs in the active server directory’s mods folder, that they are Fabric builds, and that their Minecraft version matches. Inspect the startup log for the discovered-mod list. A common cause on hosts is an extra directory level created during extraction, so the files may be in mods/modpack/mod.jar instead of directly in mods.
The remote panel starts vanilla
Check the panel’s selected server type and startup command. It must invoke the Fabric launcher. Also confirm that the launcher, server JAR, libraries, and properties files were uploaded to the directory used by that command.
A world loads but features are missing
Compare the server’s mod list with the pack manifest and check that configuration, scripts, datapacks, and content directories were transferred. A client can connect with visual mods missing on the server, but server-provided blocks, recipes, dimensions, or scripts cannot work when their server files were omitted.

- Stop the server cleanly from the console and make a dated backup of the world,
mods, configuration directories, launcher files, andserver.properties. - Write down the current Minecraft version, Loader version, Java version, and mod filenames.
- Change one compatibility layer at a time. Do not update Minecraft, Fabric Loader, Java, and every mod in a single untracked operation.
- Start in a copied test directory and read the complete startup log.
- Join with one matching client and test world loading and pack-specific features.
- If the update fails, restore the backed-up directory and world rather than trying to repair a partially upgraded production install.
Never open a newer world in an older game version without a backup. Loader and mod changes can alter registries, world data, or configuration even when the server appears to start successfully.
Final installation checklist
- The exact Minecraft release is recorded and used by the server and clients.
- The Fabric Loader version is the one required by the pack.
- Java reports the required version: 17 for 1.17–1.20.4, 21 for 1.20.5 and newer, or the documented requirement for an older release.
- The server launcher, server JAR, and (for manual installations)
librariesdirectory are present. - The EULA is accepted and
server.propertieshas been reviewed. - Fabric API and every declared dependency are in the server’s
modsdirectory. - OptiFine, OptiFabric, and other client-only files remain on clients, not on the dedicated server.
- The startup command invokes Fabric rather than vanilla.
- A clean restart completes without dependency or environment errors.
- One matching client can join and the pack’s important content works.
- Backups exist before the server is opened to other players.
Choosing a host for a Fabric modpack
If you are deciding between a local machine, a VPS, and a game-server panel, prioritize control over the installation rather than a particular brand. The service should let you select the Java version required by your Minecraft release, transfer files through SFTP or an equivalent tool, allocate enough memory for the pack, create automated backups, and set a custom Fabric launcher or start command. A panel that accepts only a fixed vanilla JAR will require a different plan or a manual VPS setup.
Estimate memory from the pack’s own guidance and leave capacity for the operating system and simultaneous players. More memory cannot repair an incompatible mod set, and reducing memory cannot fix a missing dependency; treat resource tuning as a separate step after the loader starts cleanly.
