What’s actually slowing this PC down?

In CurseForge, open My Modpacks, choose your Minecraft profile, then select Add More Content. Search for a shader pack or change the content filter from Mods to Shaders, then click Install. Launch that same profile and, in Minecraft, open Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs, select the pack, and click Apply.
Before you install: make sure the profile supports shaders
A shader pack supplies visual effects; it is not necessarily the software that adds shader settings to Minecraft. Your CurseForge profile needs a compatible shader-support mod or setup as well as the pack. CurseForge’s guide gives Iris with Sodium for Fabric and Oculus with Embeddium or Rubidium for certain NeoForge setups as examples, not universal combinations for every version or modpack. Check the Minecraft version, modloader, and pack compatibility for the profile you plan to play. CurseForge’s support documentation explains that the app uses a dedicated modding environment and that versions and modloaders must match.
If you already have a modpack, check whether it includes shader support before adding another mod. If you are creating a profile, choose the Minecraft version and modloader you intend to use, then install a compatible shader-support option before adding the pack. CurseForge lists Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt, and Vanilla as game types; availability and compatibility depend on the specific profile and files.
Install a shader pack through CurseForge
- Open the right profile. In CurseForge, select My Modpacks, then choose the Minecraft profile you intend to play.
- Open the content browser. Click Add More Content. Search for the shader pack by name, or change the content dropdown from Mods to Shaders and browse.
- Install the pack. Click Install. Check the profile’s Shaders tab to confirm that it appears there. CurseForge filters content for compatible profiles, but review the version and loader details if an item is unavailable or the profile is marked incompatible.
- Launch and activate it in Minecraft. Start the profile from CurseForge, then open Minecraft. Go to Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs, select the pack, and click Apply. Wait for the game to reload its visuals.
Install a downloaded shader ZIP manually
Use this route if you already downloaded a shader pack or cannot find it in the CurseForge browser. First launch the profile that has shader support. Open the shader-pack selection menu and, if available, click Open Shader Pack Folder. Put the shader ZIP in that folder; return to Minecraft, select the pack from the list, and apply it. The menu label and folder location can vary by loader and Minecraft version.

Iris also documents dragging a pack into the game or placing it manually in the shaderpacks folder. The Iris FAQ describes those options. Pack-specific instructions can differ: Sildur’s Vibrant Shaders and BSL Shaders describe placing the ZIP in the shaderpacks folder and selecting it in game.
A shader ZIP is not a loader mod. For example, BSL’s project instructions say to install Iris or OptiFine before placing and selecting the pack. Do not put the shader ZIP in the profile’s general mods folder.
If the shader pack does not appear
- Check the active profile. Make sure the profile you launched is the same one where you installed the pack and shader-support mod.
- Check version and loader compatibility. Minecraft version and modloader must match the profile and the relevant files. CurseForge identifies incompatible versions and loaders as reasons content may not install to a profile.
- Confirm shader support is installed. Open the shader menu provided by the active setup. For Iris specifically, the FAQ says its shader-pack selection menu can be opened with O while the game is running; that shortcut is not a general Minecraft shortcut.
- Check the ZIP’s location. If you installed it manually, verify that it is in the folder opened from the shader menu, then return to the game and select it from the list.
- Review the pack’s current instructions. Check its project page for Minecraft and loader compatibility, since these details and instructions can change.
Does this work with Bedrock Edition?
The CurseForge workflow described here is for Minecraft modding. BSL’s project page identifies that pack as exclusively for Minecraft: Java Edition, and the cited instructions do not establish that this workflow applies to Bedrock Edition. Check the edition and the specific pack’s instructions before following Java modding steps.
