Move games when you want to avoid another download, and delete them only after checking that your saves and a reinstall source are safe.
The storage decision: play, archive, or delete
Large console games create three different needs that are often confused:

- Play directly: the game stays on storage the console allows it to launch from.
- Store for later: the installation remains on an archive drive, ready to be copied back without downloading the entire game again.
- Delete and reinstall: the local installation is removed, freeing the space immediately but requiring a download or disc installation later.
That distinction matters more than simply choosing between a hard-disk drive and a solid-state drive. A fast USB SSD still follows the console’s compatibility rules. On PS5, a USB extended-storage device is archival for PS5 titles. On Xbox Series X|S, a regular USB drive generally cannot launch games optimized for the current generation.
Before changing anything, identify the title’s generation, where its saved data is stored, and whether you can download or reinstall it later. A disc is also required to launch a disc-based game after installation; deleting the files does not remove that requirement.

PlayStation support treats console storage, USB extended storage, and an added M.2 SSD as separate destinations. The M.2 option is the internal-style expansion for readers who want more playable PS5 capacity without repeatedly transferring games.
How to install large games on PS5
Install a digital game
- Open your game library or PlayStation Store and start the download.
- Before committing to a large download, open the PS5 storage settings and check the free space on the intended destination.
- Use console storage or an installed M.2 SSD when you want a PS5 game to be playable immediately. A USB extended-storage drive can hold the files, but the game must be copied to console or M.2 storage before it will launch.
- Let the download and installation finish. If the destination is full, stop and choose whether to move an existing game, add supported expansion storage, or delete an installation you no longer need.
The destination is a storage-management choice, not merely a speed choice. An ordinary external SSD does not change the PS5 rule for PS5 games: USB extended storage is for holding and transferring them, not direct play.
Install a disc game
- Insert the game disc and allow the PS5 to begin copying the installation.
- Wait for the full installation to complete before trying to play. A disc may be present while the installation is still incomplete.
- Keep the disc available. The installed files do not replace the disc license check when you start the game.
If the installation destination is full, move another title to USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD, or delete an installation after checking your saved-data requirements.
How to move PS5 games instead of deleting them
From the PS5 Game Library, highlight the game, press the Options button, and choose the command for moving games and apps. Select the source and destination shown by the console, then confirm the transfer.
Console storage to an M.2 SSD
This is the straightforward way to free console capacity while keeping a PS5 title ready to launch. Sony describes the added M.2 SSD as a location for downloading, copying, launching, moving, and managing PS5 and PS4 games.
Console storage to USB extended storage
Use this route as an archive. PS4 games can remain on the USB drive and launch from it. PS5 games can remain there to avoid a fresh download, but they must be copied back to console or M.2 storage before play.

USB extended storage back to console or M.2
Choose this transfer when an archived PS5 game is ready to play. The title becomes launchable again only after the copy finishes on console storage or the added M.2 SSD.
Disconnecting the USB drive safely
Do not pull the cable while the PS5 is using the drive. Stop activity and fully power off the console before disconnecting it, following PlayStation’s storage guidance.
How to add an M.2 SSD to a PS5
An added M.2 SSD is the PS5 expansion choice when your priority is direct play from the additional storage. Sony’s support documentation identifies it as a location for PS5 and PS4 downloads, copies, launches, moves, and management.
- Choose a drive that meets Sony’s current PS5 compatibility requirements for interface, physical dimensions, and heat management.
- Back up important data before opening the console or changing storage.
- Install the drive according to the PS5 hardware instructions, then format it when the console prompts you. Formatting prepares the SSD for game storage and removes data already on that SSD.
- After setup, use the storage settings and game-management controls to select the M.2 SSD as a destination or move existing games to it.
A USB drive and an M.2 SSD solve different problems. USB is economical archive space; M.2 is additional playable space. Buying a faster USB drive does not turn it into an M.2 installation.
How to delete games safely on PS5
Delete an installed game when you need the space now and are comfortable downloading it again or reinstalling from disc. A deletion removes the local game installation; it does not automatically mean your saved data is gone, because installed game files and saved data are separate categories in PS5 storage management.

- Check whether the highlighted item is the game installation, saved data, add-on content, or another category.
- Confirm that the digital license remains in your library or that you have the disc needed for reinstallation.
- Delete only the category you intend to remove, then confirm.
Move the title to USB or M.2 storage instead when preserving the large installation is more valuable than the space gained by deleting it.

Formatting a PS5 USB drive is not the same as deleting one game
When a USB drive is formatted as PS5 extended storage, the console erases the drive’s existing data. Sony warns that data erased through this formatting operation cannot be recovered by undoing the format. Copy any personal files or other backups elsewhere first.
Formatting is a whole-drive operation. Deleting one game is a storage-library operation. Treat them as separate decisions and verify the prompt before confirming either one.

Xbox Wire describes the supported expansion card as a direct-play location and says games can be moved or copied between local and external storage. A normal USB drive remains useful, but it does not provide the same launch compatibility for Series X|S-optimized titles.
How to install large games on Xbox Series X|S
- Start the installation from your library, the console store, or a disc.
- Review the installation location before the download or copy begins. Select internal storage or a supported Storage Expansion Card when the title must be played directly and is optimized for Series X|S.
- Use a USB HDD or SSD as the destination only when you are intentionally creating an archive or transfer copy, or when the specific older title supports USB play.
- Allow the installation to finish. If space is insufficient, move an existing title to the expansion card or USB archive, or uninstall one after checking that it can be restored.
For an older backward-compatible game, USB play may be supported. For a Series X|S-optimized game, plan on internal storage or the supported expansion card unless the title’s own requirements state otherwise.
How to move or copy Xbox games
Use the Xbox game-management controls to move or copy a title between internal storage, a supported expansion card, and a USB archive drive. The console presents the available destinations and identifies the source and target before the operation begins.
Move to a Storage Expansion Card
Choose this when you want a current-generation game to remain ready to launch while freeing internal capacity. Xbox Wire identifies the card as a direct-play location for supported games.

Move to a USB archive drive
This preserves the installation files and avoids a complete download later. A Series X|S-optimized game generally must be moved back to internal storage or a supported expansion card before it can launch.
Copy instead of move
Copy when you want the original to remain playable in its current location while creating another stored installation. Copying consumes space in both locations; moving frees the source space after completion.
Check the title’s generation
The Xbox label and game-management screen determine whether USB launch is supported. Do not assume that a USB SSD can run every game simply because its transfer speed is high.
How to delete Xbox games without losing your way back
- Open the Xbox game-management controls and select the installed title.
- Confirm whether you are removing the game installation, add-ons, or saved data.
- Check that the digital game is available in your account for redownload or that you have the disc for reinstallation.
- Uninstall only after deciding that an archive copy is not worth the storage it occupies.
Choose move or copy when the title is large, likely to be played again, or difficult to download on your connection. Choose delete when immediate capacity matters more and restoration is straightforward.

The practical comparison is direct-play compatibility, transfer requirement, capacity, console and game compatibility, and convenience. A permanent expansion costs more than reusing a USB archive but reduces repeated transfers. Archive storage costs less in many setups but adds a copy step whenever a current-generation game is ready to play.

A decision tree for freeing space
- Will you play the game soon? Keep it on PS5 console storage, a PS5 M.2 SSD, Xbox internal storage, or an Xbox Storage Expansion Card, depending on the platform.
- Do you want to keep the installation but not play it now? Move it to USB extended storage on PS5 or a USB archive drive on Xbox, accepting the return-transfer requirement for current-generation games.
- Can you restore it easily? Confirm the digital license, disc, saved-data plan, and available download before deleting.
- Is the drive being prepared for a new console format? Back up its contents first. Formatting a PS5 USB drive erases existing data.

Trying to launch a PS5 game from USB
Symptom: the game is visible on the external drive but will not start. Fix: move or copy it to console storage or the added M.2 SSD, then launch it from that location.

Expecting every Xbox game to run from USB
Symptom: a Series X|S-optimized game is stored on a USB drive but asks to be moved. Fix: transfer it to internal storage or a supported Storage Expansion Card. Older backward-compatible titles may have different USB support.
Disconnecting an active PS5 drive
Symptom: concern about corrupted or missing installations after unplugging. Fix: stop storage activity and fully power off the PS5 before disconnecting the USB drive.
Formatting instead of clearing one game
Symptom: unrelated files disappear after setting up extended storage. Fix: restore from a separate backup if one exists; formatting is a whole-drive erase, not a single-game deletion.

Deleting saved data unintentionally
Symptom: a cleanup prompt lists both the game and saved-data categories. Fix: read the category name before confirming and remove only the installed game when that is the goal.
What to look for when buying expansion storage
For PS5
- Choose a PS5-compatible M.2 SSD when direct play from expanded storage is the priority.
- Choose a USB 3.x HDD or SSD when the main goal is archiving PS5 games or playing PS4 games from the external drive.
- Verify compatibility with the exact PS5 model and Sony’s current requirements before purchase.
For Xbox Series X|S
- Choose the supported Storage Expansion Card when current-generation games must launch directly from the added storage.
- Choose a USB HDD or SSD as a lower-cost game vault and transfer drive, not as a guaranteed launch location for Series X|S-optimized titles.
- Check the title’s generation and the console’s storage-management message before moving a game permanently.
Do not buy based only on capacity or advertised transfer speed. Compatibility and direct-play support determine whether the purchase solves your problem.
