You normally do not need a separate Oculus audio-driver download. The virtual audio devices used by Quest Link and Air Link are installed with the official Meta Quest Link desktop application. Install or repair that app, connect your headset, then select the Quest audio output and microphone in Windows.

“Oculus” is the older brand name, so Windows may show the device as Oculus Virtual Audio Device, Oculus Headphones, Meta Quest Virtual Audio Device, or simply Headphones. The exact label varies by Windows version, Meta software version, language, and connection method.

What the Oculus audio driver does

The Oculus or Meta Quest audio driver is a virtual Windows audio endpoint. It routes PC game and application audio into the Quest headset and can route the headset microphone back to Windows for games, Discord, SteamVR, and other applications.

It is separate from your PC’s:

  • Realtek or other motherboard audio driver;
  • NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel HDMI/DisplayPort audio driver;
  • USB controller driver; and
  • Quest headset firmware.

Updating those unrelated drivers will not normally install the Quest virtual audio device.

  • 2+ HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Charge less, play longer and stay in the action with an improved battery that keeps up. *Based on the graphic performance of the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform vs the Meta Quest 2 platform.

Before you begin

  • A Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC that can run Meta Quest Link.
  • A compatible Meta Quest headset, such as Quest 2, Quest 3, or Quest 3S.
  • The official Meta Quest Link desktop software.
  • A reliable USB data connection for wired Link, or a functioning local network for Air Link.
  • Administrator permission to install software and drivers.
  • A charged headset and a working Windows audio system.

The audio-driver procedure is separate from the broader GPU and performance requirements for PCVR. If wired Link is unstable, use a USB cable and port capable of maintaining a reliable data connection; a cable that only charges well may still produce connection or audio symptoms.

Install the Meta Quest Link software

1. Download the official setup program

Open Meta’s official Quest setup page and download the Windows setup application. Avoid websites offering an isolated “Oculus audio driver” or “Quest audio driver” package. Meta generally distributes these virtual audio components through its PC software rather than as a separate consumer installer.

2. Run the installer

  1. Open the downloaded setup file.
  2. Approve the Windows security prompt.
  3. Follow the installation instructions.
  4. Keep the default installation settings unless you have a specific storage or enterprise requirement.
  5. Allow the installer to download and install the required Meta Quest Link components.

The audio endpoint may not appear immediately. In many cases, Windows registers it after the Meta application is installed and the headset is recognized.

3. Sign in and connect your Quest

  1. Open Meta Quest Link and sign in when prompted.
  2. For wired PCVR, connect the Quest with the Link cable.
  3. For wireless PCVR, configure and start Air Link.
  4. Put on the headset and accept any connection or data-access prompts.
  5. Wait for Meta Quest Link to recognize the headset.

Once the connection is active, Windows should register one or more virtual playback and recording devices. They may appear in Windows Sound settings, the classic Sound control panel, or Device Manager.

Select Quest audio in Windows

Windows 11 playback

  1. Open Settings → System → Sound.
  2. Under Output, select the Quest or Oculus virtual audio device.
  3. Play a Windows sound, video, or game to test it.

Look for names such as Oculus Virtual Audio Device, Meta Quest Virtual Audio Device, Oculus Headphones, or Headphones. A device does not have to contain the word “Oculus” to be the correct endpoint.

Windows 10 playback

  1. Open Settings → System → Sound.
  2. Under Choose your output device, select the Quest/Oculus device.
  3. Play audio and confirm that the Windows volume meter responds.

You can also open the classic control panel by right-clicking the speaker icon, choosing Sound settings, and opening the available playback-device options. Microsoft’s missing-audio-device guidance covers additional Windows detection steps.

Select the Quest microphone

  1. Open Settings → System → Sound.
  2. Under Input, select the Quest/Oculus virtual microphone.
  3. Speak and confirm that the input meter moves.
  4. Open the microphone settings for Discord, SteamVR, or your game and select the same device explicitly if necessary.

Changing Windows’ default microphone does not always change the microphone selected inside an individual application. Also check Windows microphone privacy permissions if the input meter does not respond.

Test audio in games, SteamVR, and Discord

If Windows audio works but a game is silent, check application-specific routing:

  • Adjustable Knuckle Straps: knuckle straps make it possible to relax your hands without dropping the controllers. High-quality PU material offers extra durability and velcro design makes it easy to adjust the strap length to different needs.
  1. Open Settings → System → Sound → Volume mixer.
  2. Find the game and check its output device.
  3. Set the output to Default or the Quest virtual audio device.
  4. Check the game’s own audio-output setting.
  5. Check SteamVR or another VR runtime’s audio settings.
  6. In Discord, select the Quest microphone and output device explicitly if automatic selection fails.

Also check whether audio is being sent to a monitor, Bluetooth headset, motherboard output, or another connected device.

Repair the Oculus or Meta Quest audio driver

If Meta Quest Link is already installed, repairing the application is the recommended first recovery step. Meta community support has recommended this workflow for Link and Air Link audio failures.

  1. Download or rerun the official installer from Meta’s Quest setup page.
  2. When the installer detects the existing installation, wait for the Already Installed screen.
  3. Choose Repair.
  4. Let the repair finish.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Open Meta Quest Link and reconnect the headset.
  7. Recheck the Windows playback and recording devices.

A repair preserves the supported installation workflow and is preferable to deleting Meta folders or manually replacing driver files. See the repair discussion in the Meta community forums for the reported repair path.

Manually refresh the virtual audio device

Use the following methods only if installation repair does not work. Device names and available options vary between Windows builds.

Remove and reinstall the device through Device Manager

  1. Disconnect the Quest headset.
  2. Open Device Manager.
  3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Also expand Audio inputs and outputs.
  5. Find the Oculus or Meta virtual audio device.
  6. Right-click it and choose Uninstall device.
  7. If Windows offers to remove the driver package, read the warning carefully before selecting that option.
  8. Restart the PC.
  9. Open Meta Quest Link.
  10. Reconnect the headset and allow the software to reinstall or register the device.

Do not remove unrelated Realtek, NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or USB-controller entries. Microsoft provides general guidance for updating and reinstalling audio drivers, but those instructions are not specific to Meta Quest.

Legacy Oculus driver utility

Some older installations include a utility in a path similar to:

C:Program FilesOculusSupportoculus-drivers

This path and utility are version-dependent. The folder may not exist in newer installations, and current versions may use different internal repair mechanisms. Do not download a replacement executable from an unofficial site. If the utility exists in your installation, follow the supported repair process and reopen the Meta/Oculus PC application afterward.

Fix common problems

The Quest audio device does not appear

  1. Confirm that Meta Quest Link came from Meta’s official setup page.
  2. Restart the PC.
  3. Close and reopen Meta Quest Link.
  4. Disconnect and reconnect the headset.
  5. Check both Audio inputs and outputs and Sound, video and game controllers in Device Manager.
  6. Open the classic Windows Sound control panel and enable the display of disabled devices.
  7. Rerun the Meta installer and choose Repair.
  8. If the device is present but corrupted, uninstall only the Oculus/Meta virtual audio device in Device Manager, restart, and reconnect.
  9. Use Microsoft’s missing or undetected audio-device troubleshooting.

If the endpoint never registers after repair and a reboot, contact Meta support rather than installing a driver from a third-party download site.

The device appears but there is no sound

  • Confirm the Quest device is selected under Windows Output.
  • Check the per-application device in Settings → System → Sound → Volume mixer.
  • Check the game’s audio-output setting.
  • Check SteamVR or another VR runtime’s audio settings.
  • Raise the Quest volume and check the headset’s active connection.
  • Make sure audio is not routed to a monitor, Bluetooth headset, or motherboard output.
  • Confirm that the headset is in an active Link or Air Link session.
  • Temporarily review third-party audio-routing software such as Nahimic or Voicemeeter.

Community reports identify incorrect output selection, Meta app repair, and third-party audio tools as recurring troubleshooting areas, but these are reported possibilities rather than universal causes. See the Meta community discussion of Quest audio failures.

The microphone does not work

  • Select the Quest virtual microphone under Windows Input.
  • Allow the relevant application to access the microphone in Windows privacy settings.
  • Check that Discord, SteamVR, or the game is not using another microphone.
  • Make sure the application is not muted.
  • Check the game’s or communication app’s own microphone setting.
  • Reconnect the headset after changing the input device.

Audio works through Link but not Air Link

This usually points to session state, routing, or network connectivity rather than a physically damaged audio device. Check that:

  • the headset and PC are on the same network;
  • Air Link is enabled and connected to the PC;
  • Windows still has the Quest virtual output selected;
  • Meta Quest Link is open and signed in;
  • the app is not stuck in a partial connection state; and
  • the headset and PC have been restarted if necessary.

Test wired Link if possible. That helps distinguish a general Quest audio problem from an Air Link networking or session problem. Reinstalling a driver will not fix poor Wi-Fi throughput, packet loss, latency, or an unstable wireless connection.

Audio stopped after a Windows or Meta update

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Restart the headset.
  3. Recheck the default playback and recording devices.
  4. Check whether Windows disabled or renamed the endpoint.
  5. Run Meta Quest Link repair.
  6. If the problem began immediately after a Windows driver update, use Windows’ supported rollback option where it is available.

Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting guide covers update, reinstall, rollback, and default-device checks.

Wired Link versus Air Link

Wired Link

Wired Link uses USB for the PCVR connection. Meta Quest Link and its virtual Windows audio devices generally handle the audio routing. Cable quality, USB-port stability, power delivery, and the USB controller can affect the overall Link session, so an unreliable cable may cause misleading audio or connection symptoms.

Air Link

Air Link uses the local network for the PCVR connection but still commonly relies on Meta Quest Link and its virtual audio endpoints on the PC. A successful headset connection does not guarantee correct Windows or application routing. Treat network troubleshooting and driver installation as separate problems.

When to contact Meta support

Contact Meta support if:

  • the official installer fails or cannot complete repair;
  • the virtual audio endpoint never appears after repair, rebooting, and reconnecting;
  • the headset cannot establish Link at all;
  • the same problem occurs across multiple Windows accounts or PCs; or
  • the symptoms suggest a headset firmware or hardware fault.

Completion checklist

You are finished when:

  • Meta Quest Link recognizes the headset;
  • a Quest/Oculus virtual output appears in Windows;
  • the Windows volume meter moves when audio plays;
  • sound is audible through the Quest speakers or connected headphones;
  • the Quest microphone produces input in Windows;
  • your game, SteamVR, or communication app uses the Quest device; and
  • audio continues working after disconnecting and reconnecting the headset.
