The Steam Deck does not have a separate graphics card. It uses a custom AMD APU with an integrated 8-compute-unit (CU) RDNA 2 GPU. In practical gaming terms, its performance is broadly comparable to older cards such as the Radeon RX 460, Radeon RX 560, or GeForce GTX 1050—especially at the Deck’s native 1280×800 resolution. That is a performance comparison, not an official hardware equivalence.

What GPU does the Steam Deck have?

The Steam Deck’s graphics processor is a custom AMD RDNA 2 GPU integrated into the same APU as its Zen 2 CPU. Valve does not identify it as a Radeon RX graphics card or assign it a conventional desktop GPU model number.

The original LCD Steam Deck’s official graphics specifications are:

  • Architecture: AMD RDNA 2
  • Compute units: 8
  • GPU clock: 1.0–1.6 GHz
  • Theoretical FP32 performance: up to 1.6 TFLOPS
  • Memory: 16 GB LPDDR5 shared by the CPU and GPU
  • APU power range: 4–15 W

Valve’s technical specifications and original specification sheet document these figures. The 1.6-TFLOPS number is theoretical FP32 arithmetic throughput; it should not be treated as a direct promise of gaming performance.

Is the Steam Deck GPU integrated or dedicated?

It is an integrated GPU, commonly called an iGPU. The graphics processor is part of the AMD APU rather than a removable PCIe graphics card.

This design means:

  • The CPU and GPU share the same APU package.
  • The GPU uses the system’s shared LPDDR5 memory instead of a separate pool of GDDR graphics memory.
  • The GPU cannot be removed or upgraded independently.
  • The entire APU operates within a very limited handheld power budget.

Calling it a “graphics card” is therefore convenient shorthand, but technically imprecise. The Deck has a GPU; it does not contain a conventional, replaceable graphics card.

What desktop GPU is equivalent to the Steam Deck?

There is no exact one-to-one equivalent. The closest useful comparison depends on the game, resolution, graphics settings, drivers, CPU, and power limit.

GPU reference How to interpret the comparison
Radeon RX 460 A useful lower-end AMD performance reference
Radeon RX 560 A reasonable broad comparison in some tests and games
GeForce GTX 1050 The most common NVIDIA performance shorthand
GeForce GTX 1050 Mobile Often a sensible comparison for power-constrained behavior
GeForce GTX 1650 Can be faster, but is not a universal equivalent
Radeon RX 6400 Shares the RDNA 2 generation but is not a direct match
Radeon RX 6600 A substantially stronger desktop GPU, not a Steam Deck equivalent

The most defensible shorthand is therefore GTX 1050-class performance on the NVIDIA side and RX 460/RX 560-class performance on the AMD side. A third-party comparison from Technical City places the GTX 1050 moderately ahead in its aggregate comparison, while another analysis discusses the Deck alongside the RX 460, RX 560, and GTX 1050. These are reference points rather than official equivalence claims.

Why the comparison changes by resolution

Resolution is one of the biggest reasons the Deck can seem competitive with older desktop GPUs despite its small, low-power design.

  • 1280×800: about 1.02 million pixels
  • 1920×1080: about 2.07 million pixels

1080p renders roughly twice as many pixels as 1280×800. The Steam Deck’s native display is 1280×800 at up to 60 Hz on the original LCD model, so its GPU usually has a much lighter rendering workload than a desktop card being tested at 1080p.

Deck games may also use dynamic resolution, AMD FSR, reduced graphics presets, or a 30- or 40-FPS cap. As a result, an older GTX 1050 or RX 460 may provide a similar experience when the Deck is running at its handheld resolution, but that does not mean the two systems will perform identically at 1080p.

A desktop card also benefits from stronger cooling, a higher sustained power limit, dedicated VRAM, and potentially a faster CPU. Conversely, the Deck’s fixed hardware target, SteamOS configuration, shader pre-caching, and game-specific profiles can help it deliver a consistent console-like experience.

Why TFLOPS cannot identify an equivalent GPU

Two GPUs with similar TFLOPS figures can produce different frame rates. Theoretical throughput does not fully describe:

  • Architecture efficiency
  • Rasterization performance
  • Memory bandwidth and cache behavior
  • Driver overhead and graphics API
  • CPU limitations
  • Resolution and image reconstruction
  • Game-engine optimization
  • Power and thermal limits

The Deck’s GPU is RDNA 2, while the RX 460 and RX 560 use older GCN-based designs and the GTX 1050 uses NVIDIA’s Pascal architecture. Architecture, clocks, memory systems, and operating conditions all differ.

How does the Steam Deck OLED GPU compare?

The Steam Deck OLED does not introduce a fundamentally faster GPU class. It retains the same basic integrated 8-CU RDNA 2 graphics design and a listed maximum of 1.6 TFLOPS.

The OLED model does improve the platform around that GPU:

  • 6 nm APU process instead of the original model’s 7 nm process
  • LPDDR5 memory rated at 6400 MT/s instead of 5500 MT/s
  • 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR OLED display
  • Refresh rate of up to 90 Hz
  • 50 Wh battery
  • Wi-Fi 6E

The newer process and faster memory can produce small efficiency or platform-level performance differences, but the OLED model should not be described as having a stronger, separate graphics card. Valve’s current technical specifications still place both models in the same fundamental GPU class.

How much VRAM does the Steam Deck have?

The Steam Deck has 16 GB of unified LPDDR5 memory, not 16 GB of dedicated VRAM.

The CPU and GPU draw from the same memory pool. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ says that 1 GB is dedicated to the GPU by default, while the GPU can access up to 8 GB depending on the workload.

This should be understood as flexible shared memory:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • It is not a permanent 1 GB VRAM limit.
  • It is not 8 GB of dedicated graphics memory.
  • The total 16 GB is shared between the operating system, CPU, and GPU.

Compared with a desktop card, unified memory saves space and can be allocated flexibly, but it does not offer the same arrangement as a discrete GPU with its own GDDR6 VRAM.

What games can the Steam Deck GPU handle?

The Deck is designed primarily for handheld gaming at 1280×800, not for maximum-quality 1080p or 1440p gaming. Many games work well with medium or low settings, a frame-rate cap, and occasional upscaling. Older games, independent games, esports titles, and well-optimized console-era releases generally fit the hardware more comfortably.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Modern, graphically demanding releases may require:

  • Lower texture and shadow settings
  • Dynamic resolution or FSR
  • A 30-FPS or 40-FPS cap
  • Reduced effects quality
  • Lower-than-native rendering resolution

There is no universal FPS figure for the Steam Deck. Performance depends on the individual game, API, preset, resolution, driver behavior, CPU load, and power configuration. Ray tracing is also a poor basis for comparing the Deck with modern dedicated GPUs because the handheld’s limited power budget makes ray-traced workloads particularly demanding.

Why an RX 6400 or RX 6600 is not a direct match

Sharing the RDNA 2 name does not make a desktop card equivalent to the Deck’s GPU. AMD’s published specifications illustrate the difference:

GPU Compute units Memory Board power
Steam Deck GPU 8 Shared LPDDR5 system memory Within a 4–15 W APU envelope
Radeon RX 6400 12 4 GB GDDR6 53 W
Radeon RX 6600 28 8 GB GDDR6 132 W

The RX 6400 has more compute units and dedicated graphics memory, while the RX 6600 is in a considerably higher performance tier. Their specifications are listed in AMD’s Radeon RX 6000 reference document.

For the same reason, the Steam Deck should not be described as having an RX 6500 XT inside. That is a discrete desktop card with more compute units, dedicated GDDR6 memory, and a much higher power target.

What this means when choosing a PC or GPU

If you want a desktop GPU with similar performance

Match the conditions, not just the model name:

  1. Compare at 1280×800 or 720p for a closer Deck-style workload.
  2. Use 1080p comparisons if you intend to play on a desktop monitor.
  3. Consider the card’s sustained power and cooling capacity.
  4. Check dedicated VRAM separately from overall system memory.
  5. Account for the desktop CPU, drivers, operating system, and game API.

A used GTX 1050, GTX 1050 Mobile system, RX 460, or RX 560 may be useful as a rough performance reference. They are not automatically ideal modern purchases, however, because age, availability, condition, and platform cost matter.

If you are choosing between a Deck and a desktop PC

The Steam Deck offers a compact integrated design, handheld controls, low power consumption, Steam integration, and a fixed hardware target. A desktop with a discrete GPU offers replaceable hardware, dedicated VRAM, stronger cooling, higher sustained power, better high-resolution performance, and greater flexibility for upgrades, recording, mods, and multitasking.

Choose the Deck for its handheld experience and efficient console-like platform—not because it contains a desktop graphics card in miniature. Choose a desktop GPU when upgradeability, 1080p or higher performance, and dedicated graphics memory matter more.

Common misconceptions

“The Steam Deck has 1.6 TFLOPS, so it equals every 1.6-TFLOPS card.”

Not necessarily. TFLOPS is only a theoretical arithmetic measure and does not account for architecture, memory, drivers, resolution, or power.

“The Steam Deck has 16 GB of VRAM.”

Incorrect. It has 16 GB of unified system memory shared by the CPU and GPU.

“The OLED model has a stronger graphics card.”

Misleading. It has a revised APU process and faster memory, but the listed GPU remains an 8-CU RDNA 2 design with up to 1.6 TFLOPS.

“A GTX 1050 always performs exactly like a Steam Deck.”

No. Results vary with the game, resolution, settings, CPU, drivers, power limit, and whether the GTX 1050 is a desktop or mobile version.

“The Steam Deck is equivalent to a GTX 1650.”

This is too broad as a default claim. Some results may place the Deck near GTX 1650 performance at a lower resolution, but a desktop GTX 1650 normally has a higher power budget and dedicated VRAM.

Bottom line

The Steam Deck uses an integrated 8-CU AMD RDNA 2 GPU inside a custom Zen 2 APU. It has no removable or dedicated graphics card, and its 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory is shared between the CPU and GPU.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a practical performance comparison, think broadly of the Radeon RX 460/RX 560 or GeForce GTX 1050 class, with the GTX 1050 Mobile sometimes being a useful power-oriented reference. The comparison is most meaningful at the Deck’s native 1280×800 resolution. The Steam Deck OLED remains in the same basic GPU class, although its newer APU process and faster memory improve the overall platform.
