The simplest way to install PowerToys on a personal Windows 10 PC is through Microsoft Store: open the official PowerToys listing and select Install. If you need to choose x64 versus ARM64, select per-user or machine-wide scope, or automate deployment, use the official GitHub executable or WinGet instead. Windows 10 must be version 2004 (build 19041) or newer, and the PC must use a 64-bit x64 or ARM64 processor. PowerToys itself is free, so there is no software purchase or physical product required.
What is PowerToys, and what do you get after installing it?
PowerToys is Microsoft’s free, open-source collection of Windows customization and productivity utilities. It is distributed as one application, with individual utilities that you can enable or disable from PowerToys Settings. Microsoft describes the project as containing more than 30 tools, with more than 135,000 GitHub stars and over 400 contributors as of 2026; those figures are rounded down and the cited Microsoft Developer page uses September 2026 repository data.

Examples of what the installed app can provide include:
- FancyZones: create custom layouts for arranging windows.
- Advanced Paste: transform clipboard content into plain text, Markdown, or JSON.
- Peek: preview files quickly without opening their full applications.
- PowerRename: rename many files in one operation.
- Keyboard Manager: remap keys and shortcuts.
- Text Extractor: copy text visible on the screen.
- ZoomIt: zoom and annotate content during presentations or demonstrations.
After setup, PowerToys opens an overview window with introductory guidance. The Home view in PowerToys Settings is where you reach the utilities and switch them on or off. You can install the application without enabling every utility; activating only the tools you need makes later troubleshooting easier.

What Windows 10 requirements must be met?
PowerToys has a hard operating-system and processor requirement. If either requirement is not met, changing the installation channel will not make the application compatible.
| Requirement | What qualifies | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Windows edition and build | Windows 10 version 2004, also called 20H1, or a later release; the minimum build is 19041 | Earlier Windows 10 builds are outside the supported requirement |
| Processor architecture | 64-bit x64 for conventional Intel or AMD PCs, or ARM64 for ARM-based Windows devices | The installer package must match the device architecture |
| Web runtime | The latest stable Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime | The PowerToys bootstrapper installs WebView2 during setup when it is needed |
To check the Windows build before downloading anything, open the Windows version information in Settings or run winver. For architecture, use the device’s Windows system information and confirm whether it reports an x64-based or ARM64-based processor. Record the build and architecture if you are preparing a deployment or diagnosing an error.
Do not download an x64 package merely because the computer has a 64-bit version of Windows. An ARM-based Windows device needs the ARM64 asset. Conversely, a conventional Intel or AMD 64-bit PC needs x64. Matching the package to the processor is especially important when an installer is being selected manually from a release page.
Does PowerToys cost anything?
PowerToys is free and open source. The official Microsoft Store listing, Microsoft’s GitHub releases, and the WinGet package are installation channels rather than separate paid editions. Chocolatey and Scoop are also package-management routes; this guide does not require buying a license, a download disc, Windows installation media, or a peripheral.
For a managed rollout, the practical costs are administrative: deciding whether every account needs the app, choosing a package source approved by your organization, and retaining logs when a deployment fails. Those considerations affect the installation method, not the PowerToys software price.
Which PowerToys installation method should you choose?
Microsoft recommends the Microsoft Store or the official GitHub releases. WinGet is the quickest terminal-based route, while Chocolatey and Scoop are community-maintained alternatives that make sense when they already fit your package-management workflow.
| Method | Best for | Architecture choice | Scope control | Automation | Source status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Store | Personal PCs and the least maintenance | Store handles the package selection | Not the method to use when you need an explicit per-user or machine-wide choice | Limited compared with an executable or package manager | Microsoft-recommended channel |
| GitHub executable | Explicit x64/ARM64 selection, local installers, or detailed setup choices | You select the matching file | Per User or Machine wide | Supports Standard Installer switches, including silent installation and logging | Microsoft-recommended channel |
| WinGet | PowerShell, repeatable workstation setup, and scripted installs | Package manager resolves the package for the device | User scope by default; machine scope can be requested | Strong command-line workflow | Microsoft-documented package source |
| Chocolatey | Organizations already using Chocolatey packages | Package manager handles it | Depends on the package-manager workflow | Strong for existing Chocolatey automation | Community method listed by Microsoft |
| Scoop | Users already managing desktop tools with Scoop | Package manager handles it | Depends on the package-manager workflow | Strong for existing Scoop automation | Community method listed by Microsoft |
For most people, choose Store. Choose GitHub when architecture or scope must be visible and controllable. Choose WinGet when the install belongs in a terminal script or repeatable setup process. Avoid mixing channels casually on the same PC: select one channel as the maintained installation so updates and troubleshooting remain predictable.
How do I install PowerToys from Microsoft Store?
The Store route is the shortest path and is presented by Microsoft as the simplest way to install PowerToys and keep it current.

- Open Microsoft Store in Windows 10.
- Open the official PowerToys listing published by Microsoft.
- Select Install.
- Wait for the Store to finish downloading and registering the application.
- Launch PowerToys, then use the Home view in PowerToys Settings to enable the utilities you want.
Use this route when you do not need to retain a local executable, choose an installer architecture manually, or select a machine-wide scope during setup. Store delivery is particularly convenient for a single personal account because updates can be managed through the same Store channel. If you are documenting an enterprise deployment, note that the Store interface does not expose the individual x64 or ARM64 executable asset in the way the GitHub release page does.
How do I install PowerToys from the official GitHub release?
The executable method gives you the clearest control over processor architecture and installation scope.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open the official Microsoft PowerToys releases page.
- Find the release you want and expand its Assets section.
- For a conventional Intel or AMD 64-bit PC, download
PowerToysSetup-0.##.#-x64.exe. For an ARM-based Windows device, downloadPowerToysSetup-0.##.#-arm64.exe. - Run the downloaded executable. Use a release asset from Microsoft’s PowerToys repository rather than an unrelated mirror.
- Read the setup prompts and select the installation scope that matches your requirement.
- Complete setup, then open PowerToys Settings and enable the utilities you need.
The 0.##.# portion represents the release version shown in the asset name; select the actual version published on the release page rather than typing the placeholder literally. Downloading the wrong architecture is a package-selection error, not something a silent switch or a later update can repair.
Should I choose Per User or Machine wide?
Select Per User when only the signed-in Windows account needs PowerToys. This normally places the application under %userprofile%AppDataLocalPrograms and avoids making it a shared installation for other accounts. It is usually the least disruptive choice on a personal computer or when users should manage their own tools.
Select Machine wide when every account on the PC should be able to use PowerToys. A machine-wide installation normally uses %ProgramFiles% and may require administrator approval during setup. Decide the scope before deploying to multiple users, because the scope determines where the application is installed and how later updates apply.
Scope is independent of architecture. A machine-wide ARM64 installation still requires the ARM64 executable, and a per-user x64 installation still requires x64. If an existing setup must move from one scope to the other, rerun the installer and select the desired scope, then remove any obsolete installation so two copies do not compete for updates.
How do I install PowerToys with WinGet?
WinGet is the fastest terminal method. Open PowerShell or another Windows terminal and run the command for the scope you want.
Install for the current user
winget install --id Microsoft.PowerToys --source winget
The standard command installs in user scope. Microsoft also documents the equivalent form below:

winget install Microsoft.PowerToys -s winget
Install for all users
winget install --scope machine Microsoft.PowerToys -s winget
Use machine scope only when the computer is managed for multiple Windows accounts and you have the permissions required by the installation policy. WinGet updates respect the scope of the existing PowerToys installation, so keep the original scope in mind when writing maintenance scripts. A script that installs per user should not later assume that a machine-scope update command is managing the same installation.
When the command finishes, launch PowerToys from Windows and confirm that its Settings window opens. If a scripted deployment fails, preserve the terminal output along with the Windows build, architecture, and requested scope; those details distinguish package-selection problems from compatibility or permission problems.
Can I install PowerToys with Chocolatey or Scoop?
Yes. Microsoft lists both as community-driven methods. They are most useful when your machine or organization already uses the corresponding package manager; they are not necessary for a normal one-off installation. Verify that your package-management policy permits these community sources before using them on a managed computer.
Chocolatey
choco install powertoys
choco upgrade powertoys
Use the first command for installation and the second for a later upgrade through Chocolatey.
Scoop
scoop bucket add extras
scoop install powertoys
scoop update powertoys
Scoop requires the Extras bucket before installing the PowerToys package. The update command keeps the package current within Scoop’s workflow.
How do I automate a PowerToys executable installation?
The GitHub executable accepts Microsoft Standard Installer options, which makes it suitable for scripted or managed deployment. Run the executable with the option that matches the behavior you need.
| Switch | Effect | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
/quiet or /q |
Performs a silent installation | Unattended deployment where no progress interface is required |
/silent or /s |
Suppresses interaction | Scripts that should not prompt the user |
/passive |
Shows progress only | Deployment where users may see status but cannot change setup choices |
/layout |
Creates a local bootstrapper image | Preparing installation files for use from a local location |
/log or /l |
Writes a log to a specified location | Auditing or diagnosing a failed deployment |
Choose the architecture-specific executable first, then apply the switch. A silent switch does not correct an x64-versus-ARM64 mismatch, an unsupported Windows build, or an incorrect installation scope. For a managed rollout, test the chosen scope and logging behavior on one device before using the command broadly.
What should I do immediately after installation?
Open PowerToys and use the overview window to understand the available utilities. In Settings, open the Home view and enable only the tools you intend to use; leaving every utility active can add shortcuts or background behavior you did not plan for.

Try one utility at a time so you can identify the shortcut or setting responsible for a change. For example, configure a FancyZones layout before changing Keyboard Manager mappings, or test Text Extractor separately from Advanced Paste. This makes it easier to reverse a setting if it conflicts with an existing application. Confirm that the utilities you need launch correctly before handing the computer to another user or sealing a deployment image.
How are PowerToys updates handled?
PowerToys can check for new versions while it is running when its automatic update checker is enabled. A manual update check is also available in PowerToys Settings. The update behavior follows the installation channel and scope you selected: Store installations are maintained through Store delivery, while WinGet updates respect the current user or machine scope.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If a managed computer must remain on an approved release, coordinate update settings with the device’s software policy rather than enabling automatic checks without review. For a personal computer, leaving the checker enabled reduces the chance of staying on an old build with missing fixes or utilities. When an update appears not to apply, first identify whether the original installation was per user or machine wide and whether a second channel has installed another copy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I check when installation fails?
Start with compatibility, then inspect the installation path and permissions. The following checklist keeps the diagnosis focused.
- Verify the Windows build: confirm Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or newer.
- Verify architecture: use the x64 executable for an Intel or AMD 64-bit PC and the ARM64 executable for an ARM-based Windows device.
- Check WebView2: the bootstrapper installs the latest stable Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime during setup; allow that part of setup to complete.
- Confirm scope and permissions: a machine-wide install may need administrator approval, while a per-user install targets the current account.
- Confirm the source: make sure a GitHub download is the official Microsoft PowerToys release, or that WinGet is using the
wingetsource shown in the command. - Look for a second installation: a prior Store, WinGet, or executable install can make it unclear which copy is being launched or updated.
- Capture deployment details: record the Windows build, processor architecture, installer source, selected scope, and any installer log before trying another method.
For an executable deployment, rerun the setup with /log or /l and a specified log location so the failure has a record. If the same package fails across channels, the Windows build, architecture, WebView2 installation, permissions, or policy restrictions are more likely causes than the choice between Store and WinGet. Do not treat switching from x64 to ARM64, or from per user to machine wide, as a substitute for meeting the minimum Windows build.
Which installation path is best for common Windows 10 situations?
- Personal PC, no special requirements: Microsoft Store.
- ARM64 laptop or tablet: GitHub executable, so you can explicitly select the ARM64 asset.
- Several accounts on one shared PC: GitHub or WinGet with machine scope.
- PowerShell-based setup script: WinGet with the scope required by the script.
- Existing Chocolatey or Scoop environment: use that package manager to keep PowerToys aligned with the rest of your workstation tools.
- Offline preparation or detailed deployment logging: the executable’s
/layoutand logging options provide more control than the Store interface.
All of these routes install the same PowerToys project; the practical differences are maintenance, architecture visibility, scope, and automation control. Choose the method that makes those four decisions clearest for your situation.

Can I change a per-user PowerToys installation to machine-wide later?
Installation scope is selected as part of setup. To change it, run the installer again and choose the desired scope, then remove the old scope if it remains listed so two installations do not compete for updates.
Does the Microsoft Store let me pick the x64 or ARM64 installer file?
The Store abstracts the individual executable assets, so it is not the clearest route when you need to document the exact architecture package. Use the official release assets when that choice must be explicit.

What information should I give an administrator when a deployment fails?
Provide the Windows 10 build, processor architecture, installation source, requested scope, and the installer log path or contents. Those details let an administrator distinguish compatibility, permissions, package selection, and runtime problems without repeating every installation attempt.
Can PowerToys run on 32-bit Windows 10?
No. The supported processor targets are 64-bit x64 and ARM64, and Windows 10 must be version 2004/build 19041 or newer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo I need to install WebView2 separately?
The PowerToys bootstrapper installs the latest stable Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime during setup when needed. Allow that step to complete; a WebView2 failure can prevent a normally compatible installation from finishing.
Which method is best for an organization deploying to every account?
Use the official GitHub executable or WinGet with machine scope. Both make the all-users decision explicit, while a per-user installation targets only the current Windows account.
Can I install PowerToys offline?
The executable’s /layout option creates a local bootstrapper image for preparing installation files at a local location. This provides more deployment control than the Store interface, but the target PC must still meet the Windows, architecture, and runtime requirements.
How do I keep PowerToys updated after installing it?
Enable its automatic update checker if that fits your policy, or use the manual update check in PowerToys Settings. Store and package-manager installations continue through their respective channels, and WinGet updates follow the existing installation scope.

The Bottom Line
For a normal Windows 10 PC, install PowerToys from Microsoft Store. Use the official GitHub x64 or ARM64 executable when you need visible architecture and scope choices, and use WinGet for repeatable terminal deployment. Before any method, confirm Windows 10 version 2004/build 19041 or later, the correct 64-bit architecture, and WebView2 support.
