How to Install SteamOS or Bazzite on an Older Handheld Gaming PC

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most older handheld gaming PCs, Bazzite is the more practical SteamOS-like replacement for Windows. It offers hardware-specific handheld images, current kernel and driver support, Desktop Mode, and an optional Steam Gaming Mode interface. Try Valve’s SteamOS recovery image when your AMD handheld is close to officially supported hardware and you want Valve’s recovery workflow, but expect limited troubleshooting help on devices Valve does not officially power.

Whichever system you choose, treat installation as a drive-management operation: back up your files, record your Windows BitLocker recovery key, verify UEFI and GPT storage, and use a USB 3.0 installer with at least 10GB free space. A clean install is simplest. Same-drive dual boot is possible, but requires shrinking Windows and manually creating or selecting an EFI partition.

SteamOS or Bazzite: which is better for an older handheld?

The right choice depends less on the brand printed on the handheld than on its GPU, firmware mode, and how closely its hardware matches Valve’s supported devices.

Choose Bazzite when hardware support is the main concern

Bazzite is designed as an alternative to Windows-based handhelds when SteamOS does not run well or lacks functions on that hardware. Its image picker lets you select the handheld hardware family, GPU family, desktop environment, and whether the image includes the -deck Steam Gaming Mode variant. That gives an older or less common handheld a better chance of receiving working controls, display handling, and driver support than a generic image.

Use Bazzite if you need newer Linux kernels or graphics drivers, want both Desktop Mode and a console-style Steam Gaming Mode, or your device is not officially supported by SteamOS. Bazzite also maintains a handheld wiki with model-specific fixes.

Choose SteamOS when the device is close to Valve-supported AMD hardware

SteamOS uses Valve’s recovery/install environment rather than a hardware image picker. It is the natural first attempt for an AMD handheld that is close to Valve-supported hardware and for readers who specifically want Valve’s official recovery workflow. On an unofficial device, however, Valve warns that troubleshooting may be limited; a successful installation does not guarantee working controls, sleep, audio, Wi-Fi, screen rotation, or performance controls.

Older GPUs need a separate reality check

Bazzite’s stated target is a graphics card capable of Vulkan 1.3 or higher. A device below that level may install but deliver poor Steam Gaming Mode or Proton results. Bazzite documents a Proton-CachyOS setup with DXVK-Sarek for some Vulkan 1.1 and 1.2 hardware, but warns against using that workaround with anti-cheat or multiplayer games. Treat it as a compatibility compromise, not an equivalent replacement for modern Vulkan support.

Hardware and firmware requirements

Check these gates before downloading an image or changing partitions:

Requirement What the published requirement means Why it matters on an older handheld
System memory 8GB RAM Below this, installation or a usable desktop may be impractical even if the installer starts.
Internal storage 50GB of free space on an internal SSD; 120GB recommended Space is needed for the operating system, shader caches, updates, and games. The 120GB figure is the recommended free capacity, not a guarantee that every game library will fit.
Graphics GPU capable of Vulkan 1.3 or higher Vulkan support affects Steam Gaming Mode, Proton translation, and game compatibility. Older Vulkan 1.1/1.2 hardware may require compromises.
Partition table Existing disks must be GPT Attempting to install Bazzite on an MBR-partitioned disk will fail.
Firmware UEFI boot UEFI is required for a modern GPT installation and for reliable boot-menu and EFI-partition handling.
Installer media USB 3.0 flash drive with at least 10GB free space Flashing erases the USB drive. USB 3.0 reduces installer load times and is the stated media expectation.

On a Windows handheld, open the firmware setup or Windows system information and confirm UEFI mode before touching partitions. If the internal disk is MBR, convert or replace it only after a verified backup and only if you understand that conversion can make Windows unbootable when done incorrectly. Do not assume that a USB can repair a firmware or partition mismatch automatically.

Back up Windows before changing anything

A clean install removes the existing operating system and can erase every partition. A dual-boot install changes the partition map and boot entries. In both cases, your first task is recovery preparation.

  1. Copy personal files to another disk. Include saved games, screenshots, emulator folders, browser data, and any device-specific control profiles. Open a few copied files from the backup so you know the copy is usable.
  2. Record the BitLocker recovery key. Several handhelds require BitLocker to be unlocked before installation. Save the recovery key somewhere you can reach without the handheld. A firmware or partition change can trigger BitLocker recovery even if Windows itself is untouched.
  3. Unlock BitLocker and decrypt the Windows volume when required by the device instructions. Do not begin partition work while the volume is locked if the handheld’s Bazzite instructions require unlocking.
  4. Disable Windows Fast Startup. Fast Startup leaves Windows volumes in a hibernation-like state and can make them unsafe to mount or resize from Linux.
  5. Do not hibernate Windows before installation. A hibernated Windows volume can contain an inconsistent filesystem state. Shut Windows down fully after Fast Startup is disabled.
  6. Make a Windows recovery drive or retain official recovery media. This is separate from your personal-file backup and gives you a way to restore the original boot environment if a dual-boot experiment fails.

Never proceed with partition deletion or resizing simply because the installer detects the drive. A detected drive is not a backup.

Prepare the bootable USB

Download the correct image

For Bazzite, use the image picker rather than guessing a download filename. Select the handheld hardware family, GPU family, KDE or GNOME desktop environment, and the -deck Steam Gaming Mode variant when your device supports it. The desktop choice affects the normal desktop session; the -deck choice supplies the console-style Steam interface.

For SteamOS, download Valve’s SteamOS recovery image. It is a recovery/install environment, not a promise that every third-party handheld will have complete driver or control support.

Flash the USB

  1. Insert a USB 3.0 flash drive with at least 10GB free space. Copy off anything you need first; flashing erases the drive.
  2. Use Fedora Media Writer, Bazzite’s preferred flasher. Rufus and Etcher are supported alternatives.
  3. Select the downloaded image and the USB drive carefully. Confirm the drive’s capacity and name before starting so you do not overwrite another disk.
  4. Start the write process and wait for verification to finish. Do not remove the USB while the writer is still checking the image.
  5. Do not use Ventoy for this installation. Bazzite says Ventoy is not recommended under any circumstance and provides no support for it.

If the writer reports a verification error, download the image again and reflash another USB drive instead of booting an unverified image.

Boot the handheld from USB

  1. Shut the handheld down completely, not into Windows hibernation.
  2. Connect the newly flashed USB drive. A USB-C hub may be necessary on devices with only one USB-C port; use a hub that can provide power while the USB is attached if the handheld’s battery is low.
  3. Power on and open the model-specific UEFI or one-time boot menu. The button combination differs by handheld, so use the device manual or support page rather than relying on a key sequence from another model.
  4. Select the USB entry in UEFI mode. If two entries are shown, choose the one explicitly marked UEFI.
  5. If the USB does not appear, check that the drive was flashed successfully, Secure Boot requirements for that image are met, and the firmware is set to UEFI rather than legacy or CSM mode.

Keep the handheld connected to power during installation. An interrupted write to the internal SSD can leave both the old system and the new bootloader unusable.

Install Bazzite or SteamOS

Clean installation: the simplest route

A clean install is appropriate when Windows is no longer needed on the internal drive or you have a separate Windows disk. It avoids the most delicate partitioning decisions.

  1. Start the installer from the USB and choose the internal SSD as the installation target.
  2. Review the partition summary. Remove old operating-system partitions only after confirming the disk model and size.
  3. Allow the installer to create the required GPT and EFI layout automatically unless the device documentation specifies a different arrangement.
  4. Confirm the erase operation. This is the point at which existing Windows partitions and their data can be destroyed.
  5. Create the Linux user account when prompted. A physical wired USB keyboard is useful, and may be required, for account entry.
  6. Wait for the installation and bootloader setup to complete, then reboot and remove the USB when the installer tells you to.

On first boot, complete the initial setup and sign in to Steam. If the handheld starts back in Windows, return to UEFI and move the new Linux boot entry above Windows Boot Manager.

Same-drive dual boot: manual partitioning is required

Dual boot preserves Windows but adds more ways to lose access to it. The reliable sequence is to shrink Windows first, then install Linux into the unallocated space.

  1. In Windows Disk Management, disable Fast Startup, shut Windows down fully, and shrink the Windows partition to create unallocated space. Keep enough room for Windows updates and the games you still intend to run there.
  2. Boot the Linux installer in UEFI mode and select manual or custom partitioning.
  3. Choose the unallocated space for the Linux installation. Do not format the Windows data partition.
  4. Use a separate EFI System Partition for the boot files as required by the installer and the device layout. Do not casually delete the existing Windows EFI partition; identify it by its EFI/System role and decide deliberately whether the installer should use it or create another one.
  5. Review every proposed format and mount point. A partition marked for formatting is erased even when it contains a familiar Windows label.
  6. Complete installation, reboot, and test both Linux and Windows entries before deleting the installer USB.

Because same-drive dual boot depends on the firmware’s EFI entries and Windows’ recovery behavior, keep the BitLocker key and Windows recovery media available for every future firmware or partition change.

First boot and handheld-specific setup

The first successful boot is not the end of the installation. Test the functions that make a handheld usable rather than assuming that a desktop login proves compatibility.

  • Steam login: sign in and confirm that the Steam client can update and launch a small game.
  • Controls: test every button, both sticks, triggers, vibration, and any rear or macro buttons.
  • Display scaling: open the desktop display settings, labelled “Display(s) [and Monitor]” in the relevant Bazzite documentation, and correct scaling if text or the Steam interface is too small or too large. Bazzite notes that scaling can be incorrect for a device’s screen after a fresh installation.
  • Orientation and resolution: verify that the display is not rotated and that the native resolution and refresh rate are available.
  • Wi-Fi and audio: connect to a network, pair or connect headphones, test speakers, and check the microphone.
  • Sleep and resume: suspend the handheld, wake it, and confirm that controls, audio, and the display return.
  • Power controls: check TDP, fan, performance, and battery reporting where the model exposes them.
  • Steam Gaming Mode: launch it from the -deck image when selected, then return to Desktop Mode to install drivers, utilities, or troubleshoot.

Use Bazzite’s handheld wiki for model-specific fixes when a control, display, wireless chip, sleep state, or performance function is missing. A generic Linux workaround can conflict with a device-specific configuration, so apply the fix for the exact handheld model.

SteamOS and Bazzite compared

Decision point SteamOS Bazzite
Official-device support Best fit for hardware close to Valve-supported AMD handhelds. Valve may provide limited troubleshooting help on unofficial devices. Built for handhelds where SteamOS is unavailable, incomplete, or missing hardware functionality.
Image selection Valve’s SteamOS recovery/install image. Image picker selects handheld hardware, GPU family, KDE or GNOME, and the optional -deck Steam Gaming Mode variant.
GPU compatibility Depends heavily on the device matching supported hardware and drivers. Targets Vulkan 1.3 or higher; documents a Vulkan 1.1/1.2 Proton-CachyOS and DXVK-Sarek workaround with anti-cheat and multiplayer limitations.
Updates Valve-controlled SteamOS recovery and system-update path. Maintained Linux distribution with current kernel and driver work intended for broader handheld hardware.
Recovery and rollback Valve recovery environment is the official reinstall path. Reinstallation uses the Bazzite image and USB workflow; preserve backups because reinstalling can erase partitions.
Dual boot Requires manual partition planning on a same-drive Windows setup. Also requires manual partitioning, GPT, UEFI, and a correctly handled EFI partition; no automatic safety net replaces a backup.
Desktop environment Valve’s recovery/install environment and SteamOS desktop experience. KDE or GNOME selection, with Desktop and handheld-focused image variants.
Handheld fixes Device support varies outside Valve-powered hardware. Handheld wiki provides model-specific fixes and configuration guidance.

Troubleshooting common installation failures

The installer says the disk is MBR

Bazzite will fail on an MBR-partitioned disk. Stop rather than forcing the installation. Confirm that the internal disk is GPT and that the installer was booted in UEFI mode. Converting a live Windows disk requires a separate recovery plan and can trigger BitLocker or boot-repair work; back up first.

The USB does not boot

Reflash the image with Fedora Media Writer, Rufus, or Etcher and verify it. Try another USB port or drive, select the UEFI USB entry in the one-time boot menu, and check the handheld’s firmware settings. Do not substitute Ventoy, which Bazzite does not support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows asks for BitLocker recovery after installation

Enter the recovery key you recorded before changing the disk or boot settings. If you do not have the key, stop making further firmware changes and use Windows account or organization recovery procedures. This is why recording the key is a prerequisite, not an optional precaution.

Steam Gaming Mode starts but the controls or display are wrong

Return to Desktop Mode, correct display scaling in “Display(s) [and Monitor],” and test controls, orientation, audio, Wi-Fi, sleep, and TDP separately. Then consult the exact model entry in the Bazzite handheld wiki. An older device may boot successfully while still lacking a working driver or control service.

Games install but run badly

Check the GPU’s Vulkan level and the game’s Proton requirements. Vulkan 1.3-capable hardware is the practical target. On Vulkan 1.1 or 1.2 hardware, the documented Proton-CachyOS with DXVK-Sarek route may improve compatibility for some games, but avoid relying on it for anti-cheat or multiplayer titles.

Dual boot launches only one operating system

Enter UEFI and inspect the boot entries. Confirm that both the Linux and Windows EFI entries exist, then select the desired default. If Windows was hibernated or Fast Startup remained enabled, boot Windows fully, disable those features, and repair the boot entry only after protecting your files and BitLocker key.

When an older handheld is not a good candidate

Installation is technically possible on more devices than provide a good experience. Reconsider the project if the handheld has no UEFI support, only an MBR disk that cannot be safely converted, less than 8GB RAM, insufficient SSD space, or a GPU below Vulkan 1.3 when the games you care about require modern Proton features. A device can reach a login screen and still fail the functions that matter on a portable system: suspend, controls, audio, wireless networking, display rotation, or power management.

For a supported AMD handheld, try SteamOS first if Valve’s recovery workflow is your priority. For an unsupported or poorly supported model, choose the matching Bazzite handheld image and use its model-specific guidance. In either case, preserve a Windows recovery path until you have tested every essential function.
