How to Install Torchlight II Community Fixes Safely and Back Up Your Saves

Install a finished Torchlight II community fix through its supported channel—usually Steam Workshop when the fix is listed there—and back up your saves before changing mods or switching branches. If you have ever played with mods, copy both the save and modsave folders somewhere outside the game’s save directory. The game keeps modded and unmodded saves separately, so a character that is not visible under one setup may still be present under the other.

What should I check before installing a Torchlight II fix?

First identify the game’s storefront and current branch, then check the fix’s own listing for its supported game version, dependencies, conflicts, and load-order instructions. Official guidance does not certify arbitrary community fixes, so a mod author’s compatibility notes—not the fact that a mod appears in Workshop—are the relevant source for that particular fix.

Make a short record of the current setup

  • Note whether your copy is from Steam or another storefront and which operating system you use.
  • Record whether the game is on its default branch or Steam’s optional public_beta branch.
  • Write down the names and versions of active mods, along with any instructions from their authors.
  • Check whether you play multiplayer. The other players’ branch and mod combination can affect whether you can play together.
  • Capture the current priority order in the launcher/mod manager, especially if several mods are already enabled.
  • Save a local copy or note of each mod’s Workshop page and author instructions. A listing can change, and the author’s stated requirements are more useful than a generic installation recipe.

This record makes it easier to undo a change if the fix conflicts with another mod or the game behaves differently afterward. It also separates a real compatibility problem from a simple mistake, such as enabling the right mod in the wrong priority position or launching the wrong branch.

Decide whether the fix is actually the right route

Prefer the supported distribution channel named by the author. When a finished fix is available in Steam Workshop, subscribing there is generally safer than using an unknown mirror because Steam handles synchronization. That does not prove the fix is current, compatible with your branch, or safe with your existing mod list. If the author lists a required dependency, a conflict, or a specific order, treat that information as part of the installation—not as optional reading.

Do not install GUTS merely because a fix is described as a mod. GUTS is an editor for creating or editing content, while a finished Workshop item can be subscribed to without opening the editor. GUTS is primarily relevant to authors and editors, and Arc support says it is Windows-only.

How do I back up Torchlight II saves?

Exit Torchlight II completely before copying anything. Back up the relevant save folders to a separate location, not another folder inside the save directory you are changing. If mods have been used, copy both save and modsave, even if only one currently appears to contain the character you want.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Documented save locations

Arc Games’ support article, last updated June 28, 2019, lists the following locations. On Steam, the folder name in brackets is your numeric Steam user ID; keep the full folder, rather than selecting only files that look familiar. The paths are documented locations, not a guarantee that every machine uses them: operating-system folder redirection or a different storefront setup can change where the files are stored.

Storefront and operating system Save folder Modded-save folder
Steam, Windows DocumentsMy GamesRunic GamesTorchlight 2Save[NUMERIC STEAM USER ID] DocumentsMy GamesRunic GamesTorchlight 2ModSave[NUMERIC STEAM USER ID]
Non-Steam, Windows DocumentsMy GamesRunic GamesTorchlight 2Save DocumentsMy GamesRunic GamesTorchlight 2ModSave
Steam, macOS ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Torchlight II/my games/runic games/torchlight 2/save/[NUMERIC STEAM USER ID] The same path ending in /modsave/[NUMERIC STEAM USER ID]
Non-Steam, macOS ~/Library/Application Support/runic games/Torchlight II/save ~/Library/Application Support/runic games/Torchlight II/modsave
Steam, Linux ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/Torchlight II/my games/runic games/torchlight 2/save/[NUMERIC STEAM USER ID] The same path ending in /modsave/[NUMERIC STEAM USER ID]

For the macOS and Linux Steam entries, “the same path ending in” means keep the rest of the listed path—including the Steam user ID folder—and replace the final save directory with modsave. Arc recommends copying the saves or entire save folder to the Desktop for safekeeping. A separate drive or other separate storage location can also hold a copy; no particular storage device is required.

Keep the backup recoverable

  1. Make sure the game is closed before copying the folders.
  2. Copy the whole relevant folder or folders to a separate location. If you have used mods, include both save and modsave.
  3. Keep this untouched copy separate from any later test copy or restored files. Do not replace your only backup with a newer save from a changed setup.
  4. Before changing branches or mod state, confirm you can identify the backup location and the original folders.
  5. Give the backup a clear date and setup label, such as “default branch, mods A and B, October 25, 2026.” This is a practical way to avoid restoring the wrong state when several experiments exist.
  6. If you use a USB flash drive or another computer, eject or disconnect it only after the copy finishes. The important requirement is separation from the folder being modified, not a particular brand, capacity, or storage device.

The Torchlight II team’s October 22, 2026 announcement specifically recommends backing up local saves before switching branches or changing a mod setup. It gives that advice as a precaution; it does not say that a branch change necessarily deletes saves.

Verify what you copied

Open the copied folder and make sure it contains the character and recovery files you expect before testing a fix. You do not need to edit the files. The purpose of this check is simply to confirm that the copy completed and is outside the live save path. If you have played both modded and unmodded games, verify both locations independently; a character can be absent from one and still exist in the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I install a finished community fix?

For a fix available through Steam Workshop, use Steam’s subscription route and allow the client to synchronize the mod. Then review the active mod list and priority in the Torchlight II launcher/mod manager. Follow the individual mod’s stated requirements; the official sources do not provide one universal activation sequence for every third-party fix or storefront.

  1. Read the fix’s listing first. Check the author’s stated game branch or version, required dependencies, conflicts, and any ordering instructions. If multiplayer matters, look for the author’s compatibility guidance for that use as well.
  2. Subscribe through Steam when the mod is listed there. Steam Workshop subscriptions synchronize mods through Steam. Do not assume that subscription alone answers questions about whether the mod is active or correctly ordered.
  3. Allow synchronization to finish. A subscription is a request for Steam to obtain and update the item. Wait for the client to finish its normal synchronization, then open the launcher rather than assuming the item is ready because the Workshop page shows that you subscribed.
  4. Open the Torchlight II launcher or mod manager. Review the activated mods and their priority, and apply the ordering the author documents. If the listing does not explain a required order or compatibility, do not invent one.
  5. Change one mod or one clearly defined set at a time. Start the game and check whether the fix loads and the expected save is visible. This cautious approach is useful because compatibility is not guaranteed, particularly across older mods and the new beta; it is not a claim that every mod has been tested in this sequence.
  6. Test the smallest meaningful scenario. Confirm that the game reaches the expected menu or character screen, that the intended character appears, and that the fix’s described behavior is present. Avoid adding another unrelated mod during this first check, so a failure has a narrower cause.
  7. Keep the original backup unchanged. If the test fails, close the game before restoring files or changing the setup again.

Steam Workshop is the documented automatic subscription and synchronization route, and Arc says Steam installs its two official mods automatically. That does not make every community fix an official or verified mod: the listing author remains the source for that fix’s dependencies and compatibility notes.

What not to assume about non-Steam copies

The documented Workshop flow applies to Steam. A non-Steam installation may use different save paths and may not have the same subscription interface. Use the installation method the fix author documents for that storefront, and do not transplant Steam-specific folders or instructions by guesswork. Regardless of storefront, preserve the corresponding save and modsave folders before changing anything.

Do I need GUTS to install a community fix?

No. GUTS is Torchlight II’s editor and is primarily relevant if you are creating or editing mods; it is not required merely to subscribe to an existing Workshop mod. Arc support says GUTS is Windows-only.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Runic’s older wiki describes Steam users installing GUTS through Steam Library > Tools. Its non-Steam instructions refer to an older 1.22.x.x release and should not be treated as verified instructions for the October 2026 beta. If you are only installing a finished fix, use its supported distribution channel and author instructions rather than installing an editor you do not need.

Should I switch to the October 2026 beta for a fix?

Not unless the fix’s author says it supports that branch and you specifically want to use it. The Torchlight II team announced the Steam public_beta branch on October 22, 2026; it includes verified fixes and updated systems, but it is optional, and the default Steam version remains available.

The announcement says the default and beta branches share save data, while also warning that some mods may fail to load or behave unexpectedly because older-mod compatibility is not guaranteed. It also says changing whether mods are enabled can make a save unavailable to load: modded and unmodded saves are kept separately. In other words, a save not appearing after a setup change should not automatically be treated as deleted.

Use the beta as a separate compatibility decision, not as an assumed prerequisite for a community fix. Back up before changing branches or mod state. The announcement also says the default and beta branches do not currently support multiplayer with one another; players who want to play together should use the same game version. Those statements describe the status announced on October 22, 2026, and may change later.

A conservative branch-change sequence

  1. Record the current branch and active mod list.
  2. Exit the game and copy both save folders if mods have ever been used.
  3. Change the Steam branch only after the backup exists.
  4. Check the fix author’s beta compatibility statement before enabling the fix.
  5. Launch with the smallest intended mod set and check whether the expected save is visible.
  6. For multiplayer, confirm every participant is on the same branch and using a compatible mod combination.

If the character disappears after this sequence, stop launching repeatedly. The branch announcement describes shared save data but separate modded and unmodded save locations; the missing character may reflect the active setup rather than deletion.

How do I roll back a mod or recover a missing character?

If a character is missing or a save appears broken, stop launching the game until you have made a copy of the relevant save folders. Arc’s recovery guidance discusses .SVB, .restore, and backup.tmp files, but the existence of these files does not make it safe to overwrite or delete them without following the recovery procedure.

  1. Close Torchlight II. Avoid further launches while you preserve the current files.
  2. Copy the relevant save folders to a separate location. Include both save and modsave if mods have been used. Preserve any recovery-related files with the copy.
  3. Check the active setup. Note the current branch and mod state. Since modded and unmodded saves are separate, check the appropriate folder rather than assuming a character has vanished permanently.
  4. Restore only from a known-good copy. If you are rolling back a change, use the backup made before that change and restore the prior mod configuration as well as the relevant save folders.
  5. For damaged or inaccessible character files, follow Arc’s character-save recovery instructions. Keep the preserved copy untouched while working through the documented recovery-file procedure.
  6. Test after restoring. Launch with the same branch and mod state represented by the backup. Changing both the files and the active setup at once can make it harder to identify which difference solved—or caused—the problem.

Do not treat a save folder as disposable simply because the character is absent in the current launcher setup. Preserving a copy first keeps more recovery options open if a later step does not work.

How should I compare two community fixes?

The official sources do not endorse a particular third-party fix. Compare the information supplied by each mod author, and choose only when the compatibility details fit your setup.

What to compare What to look for
Storefront and operating system Whether the listing’s installation channel and instructions apply to your copy and operating system.
Branch or game version An explicit statement that the fix supports your current branch, especially if you use the optional beta.
Dependencies and conflicts Required mods, known incompatibilities, and whether the author documents a compatible combination.
Load order A documented priority or ordering rule in the author’s instructions.
Multiplayer Whether players need the same branch and compatible mod combination. The October 22, 2026 announcement says the default and beta branches do not support multiplayer with one another.
Rollback Whether you have a separate save backup and can restore the previous mod configuration if the fix causes problems.
Maintenance signals Whether the author identifies a current version, known limitations, or a response to branch changes. Do not infer compatibility merely from an old item remaining visible in Workshop.

A fix that addresses the right symptom but lacks branch or dependency information is not automatically the safer choice. A clearly documented older fix may still be unsuitable for the beta, while a newer listing may require a particular order with mods you already use. The useful comparison is the fit with your exact storefront, operating system, branch, save state, and multiplayer plans.

How many mods can Torchlight II run at once?

Arc support states that Torchlight II permits a maximum of 10 active mods at a time. That limit does not mean a set of 10 mods will work together: dependencies, conflicts, ordering, and branch compatibility still depend on the mods involved.

Arc’s merge guidance is aimed at people making a merged mod, not players doing a routine fix installation. It notes that a merged mod receives a distinct identifier, so independently merged copies are not equivalent for multiplayer. Merging is therefore not a general-purpose workaround to use simply because a fix is difficult to install.

Why fewer active mods can make troubleshooting easier

The 10-mod ceiling is a hard count, not a compatibility guarantee. If a fix fails, removing unrelated changes temporarily can make the test easier to interpret, provided you have recorded the original setup and backed up the saves. Re-enable or restore the prior configuration only after you have preserved the test result and know which branch and save folder you are using.

Multiplayer checks before you invite friends

Branch and mod compatibility matter to every player, not just the person installing the fix. The October 22, 2026 announcement says the default and beta branches do not currently support multiplayer with one another, so a default-branch player cannot assume a beta-branch friend can join. Use the same branch and follow the mod author’s multiplayer guidance for the specific combination.

When a mod is merged, Arc says the merged result receives a distinct identifier; independently merged copies are therefore not equivalent for multiplayer. That is another reason not to create a private merge as a routine installation shortcut. If the fix is intended for a group, agree on the exact branch, mod names, versions, order, and any required dependencies before anyone changes a save setup.

Common installation pitfalls

  • Backing up only one folder: If mods have ever been used, preserve both save and modsave. The currently visible character does not prove the other folder is empty.
  • Changing branch and mod state together: Make a backup first and change one clearly defined variable at a time where practical.
  • Assuming Workshop means verified: Workshop supplies synchronization; the individual author supplies the fix’s requirements and compatibility notes.
  • Guessing a save path: Use the storefront and operating-system entries above. Steam and non-Steam paths differ, and redirected folders can move the actual location.
  • Installing GUTS unnecessarily: The editor is for creating or editing mods and is not required to subscribe to a finished Workshop fix.
  • Deleting recovery files: Preserve .SVB, .restore, and backup.tmp files before following Arc’s recovery procedure.
  • Testing with a full mod stack: A single fix or clearly defined set makes a failure easier to isolate than several simultaneous changes.
  • Assuming the beta is required: The October 2026 beta is optional, and older mods may fail or behave unexpectedly on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing Torchlight II branches erase my saves?

The October 22, 2026 announcement says the default and beta branches share save data; it does not say that changing branches deletes saves. If a character is not available after a setup change, preserve the folders first and check whether the active mod state points to the other save folder.

Can I use the same character in modded and unmodded Torchlight II?

Torchlight II keeps modded and unmodded saves separately, so changing whether mods are enabled can make a character unavailable under the other setup. Back up both folders before experimenting rather than trying to move or overwrite a character file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if I find .SVB or .restore files?

Do not delete or overwrite them as a first response. Arc’s character-recovery guidance covers these files and backup.tmp; preserve a copy of the folder and follow that procedure if recovery is needed.

Where are Torchlight II saves on Steam?

On Windows, Arc lists Documents\My Games\Runic Games\Torchlight 2\Save\[NUMERIC STEAM USER ID] and the corresponding ModSave path. Steam macOS and Linux paths are listed in the table above. Folder redirection or a different installation can alter the location, so verify the actual folder on your machine.

Is a USB flash drive required for a backup?

No. Arc recommends copying saves or the entire save folder to the Desktop, and any separate storage location can work. A USB drive is optional; the important point is keeping the copy outside the folder you are changing and not overwriting your only backup.

Does subscribing to Workshop activate a fix automatically?

Steam synchronizes a subscribed Workshop item, but you still need to review the Torchlight II launcher/mod manager, activate the intended mod, and set the priority required by the author. Subscription does not guarantee compatibility or correct load order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will my existing mods work on the beta branch?

Not necessarily. The October 22, 2026 announcement says some mods may work, but compatibility with older mods is not guaranteed; they may fail to load or behave unexpectedly. Check each author’s branch guidance and back up before testing.

How many mods may be active at once?

Arc support states that the game permits a maximum of 10 active mods. Staying under that limit does not resolve conflicts, missing dependencies, incorrect order, or branch incompatibility.

Can players on the default and beta branches play together?

The October 22, 2026 announcement says those branches do not currently support multiplayer with one another. Players who want to play together should use the same game version and compatible mod combination.

Do I need GUTS for a Workshop fix?

No. GUTS is the Windows-only editor used primarily to create or edit mods. A finished Workshop fix can be installed through its supported subscription route without installing GUTS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Back up both save and modsave before changing a Torchlight II mod setup or branch. Use Steam Workshop when the fix is listed there, follow the author’s dependencies and load order, and treat the October 22, 2026 beta as an optional compatibility choice. If a character disappears, stop launching, preserve the folders and recovery files, then restore a known-good setup instead of overwriting your only backup.
