Boot Camp can install Windows alongside macOS, but only on supported Intel-based Macs. Apple’s documented workflow creates a Windows partition, runs Windows Setup, and then installs Apple’s Windows support software and hardware drivers. Apple’s current instructions cover a full installation of Windows 10, while Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Windows 11 may be possible on some Intel Macs, but Apple does not document it as a Boot Camp-certified replacement, so you must check Microsoft’s requirements and your Mac’s driver compatibility before proceeding.

This guide covers compatible models, storage and media requirements, the complete installation sequence, dual-boot controls, removal, and the Windows 10-versus-Windows 11 decision you need to make in 2026.

Can I install Windows on a Mac with Boot Camp?

Yes, if the Mac is an Intel model included in Apple’s supported list. Boot Camp is Apple’s dual-boot utility: it divides the internal startup disk into macOS and Windows areas, starts Windows Setup, and installs Apple’s support software after Windows is running. You choose the operating system at startup rather than running both systems simultaneously.

Apple-silicon Macs using an M-series chip are outside Apple’s documented Boot Camp compatibility list. That means a Mac with an M1, M2, M3, or later Apple-designed chip should not be treated as a Boot Camp installation target. Check the processor shown in Apple menu > About This Mac before downloading an ISO or repartitioning the disk.

Apple’s documented compatible Mac families

Mac family Models or introduction years covered by Apple’s list Important qualification
MacBook Models introduced from 2015 through 2017 These are Intel-era models.
MacBook Air Models introduced from 2012 through 2020 Apple’s list states M1 exclusions.
MacBook Pro Models introduced from 2012 through 2020 Apple’s list states M1 exclusions.
Mac mini Models introduced from 2012 through 2018 Use the exact model year shown in About This Mac.
iMac Models introduced from 2012 through 2020 Use the exact model year and processor.
iMac Pro All iMac Pro models These systems are Intel-based.
Mac Pro Models introduced from 2013 through 2019 Use the exact model identifier before installation.

The year ranges describe Apple’s documented families, not a guarantee that every configuration has identical Windows drivers. Confirm the particular Mac before you continue.

What do I need before starting Boot Camp?

Prepare the Mac, the Windows media, and enough internal storage before opening Boot Camp Assistant. Repartitioning changes the startup disk, so make a current backup of important files first.

  • A supported Intel Mac: Verify the model and processor in About This Mac.
  • At least 64 GB of free startup-disk space: This is Apple’s stated minimum. Apple says 128 GB or more gives a better experience and is needed for automatic Windows updates in its guidance.
  • A full 64-bit Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro ISO or installation medium: Apple’s first-install workflow requires a full version, not an upgrade package.
  • A 16 GB or larger USB flash drive: Some supported Mac models need it so Boot Camp Assistant can create Windows installation media. Newer models on Apple’s list may not require the drive.
  • Power for a portable Mac: Connect the MacBook to its charger for the entire process.
  • Current macOS updates: Install available updates before partitioning.
  • Time for Windows Setup and driver installation: The process includes several restarts and must be allowed to finish without interruption.

Keep the Windows ISO and any required USB drive available locally. Remove unnecessary external devices before Windows Setup begins; leaving only the media and essential keyboard, mouse, display, or network hardware reduces the chance of selecting the wrong disk.

Which Windows version should I install in 2026?

Apple’s current Boot Camp article documents Windows 10, but Microsoft ended normal Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 still runs, yet Microsoft no longer provides normal security updates, feature updates, or technical support after that date. Installing it therefore follows Apple’s documented path but leaves you with an operating system outside normal support.

Windows 11 has a newer support lifecycle, but the existence of an Intel processor does not by itself make a Mac a supported Windows 11 machine. Microsoft requires all of the following minimum capabilities:

Windows 11 requirement Microsoft’s minimum Why it matters on a Mac
Memory 4 GB RAM The Mac must meet the memory floor before Windows can be considered.
Storage 64 GB This is a Windows requirement in addition to the space needed for applications and games.
Firmware UEFI with Secure Boot capability The firmware mode and security settings must be compatible.
Security processor TPM version 2.0 Check the exact Mac and Windows setup rather than assuming every Intel model qualifies.
Graphics Compatible DirectX 12 graphics Graphics-driver support is especially important for games.
Processor A compatible processor Microsoft’s compatibility determination is model-specific.

Apple does not present Windows 11 as the supported Boot Camp workflow in the current guide. If you choose Windows 11, verify the exact Mac against Microsoft’s requirements and confirm that Boot Camp support software and graphics drivers work for that model. Treat any installation that fails those checks as an unsupported compatibility experiment, not as an Apple-documented upgrade path.

How should I prepare my Mac for installation?

  1. Back up your files. Copy important documents, saves, photographs, and other irreplaceable data to a separate backup before changing partitions.
  2. Identify the model and processor. Open Apple menu > About This Mac and record the Mac family, introduction year, and whether the system reports an Intel processor or an Apple chip. Stop if it reports an Apple chip, because Boot Camp is not in Apple’s supported list for those Macs.
  3. Update macOS. Install available macOS updates, then restart normally so pending firmware or system changes are complete.
  4. Connect power. A portable Mac should remain connected to its charger while the disk is divided and Windows is installed.
  5. Check free space. Open the Mac’s storage view and confirm at least 64 GB is available; plan for 128 GB or more if you want Apple’s better-experience allowance and room for automatic Windows updates.
  6. Review Secure Boot on a T2-equipped Mac. If Secure Boot settings were changed, Apple says to restore the default Full Security setting before installation.
  7. Prepare removable media when required. Have a 16 GB or larger USB flash drive ready if your supported model asks Boot Camp Assistant to create Windows installation media.

How do I install Windows with Boot Camp Assistant?

Use Apple’s utility rather than manually creating partitions. The normal workflow is sequential: select the ISO, choose the Windows partition size, let Windows Setup install to the BOOTCAMP partition, and finish Apple’s support-software installation inside Windows.

1. Open Boot Camp Assistant

In macOS, open Applications > Utilities > Boot Camp Assistant. Read the introduction and continue only after confirming that your backup, power connection, storage, and Windows media are ready.

2. Select the Windows ISO and create media if prompted

When the Assistant asks for a Windows image, select the full 64-bit Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro ISO. If your Mac requires removable installation media, insert the 16 GB or larger USB flash drive and let Boot Camp Assistant create the installer. Do not substitute an upgrade-only package for the first installation.

3. Allocate the Windows partition

Use the partition-size control in Boot Camp Assistant to decide how much internal storage Windows will receive. The allocation comes from the Mac’s startup disk, so account for Windows itself, updates, applications, and game libraries rather than choosing only the minimum. Apple’s guide says the partition size cannot be changed later through the normal Boot Camp workflow; choose carefully before selecting Install.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Let the Mac restart into Windows Setup

Continue through the Assistant and allow the Mac to restart. Disconnect unnecessary external devices before Windows Setup begins. When Setup asks where to install Windows, select the partition named BOOTCAMP.

5. Format only the BOOTCAMP target when asked

Windows Setup may format the BOOTCAMP partition automatically. If it presents a Format control, use it on the BOOTCAMP target identified by the installer, not on a macOS or recovery partition. Selecting the wrong partition can destroy data, which is why the backup and careful target check are essential.

6. Complete Windows Setup

Proceed through Windows’ account, region, network, and privacy screens. The Mac may restart more than once. Let each restart continue normally and do not remove installation media while Setup still needs it.

7. Install Apple’s Windows support software and drivers

After Windows starts, the Boot Camp installer should install Apple’s Windows support software and hardware drivers. Allow that installer to finish. These drivers provide the Mac-specific support Windows needs for hardware such as graphics, audio, keyboard, trackpad, networking, and other devices used by games and ordinary applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the Boot Camp installer does not open automatically, open it manually in Windows and complete the installation. Restart Windows when the installer requests it so the drivers can load.

How much space should I give Windows?

Apple states 64 GB of free startup-disk space as the minimum required to begin. That figure describes free space available on the Mac before partitioning; it is not a recommendation for a large game library. Apple says 128 GB or more provides the best experience and is needed for automatic Windows updates in its guidance.

Choose the partition size based on what you intend to store on the Windows side. A small allocation can work for Windows and a few lightweight applications, but modern games can consume tens or hundreds of gigabytes. Because the standard Boot Camp workflow does not provide a later resize operation, leave sufficient room at installation time rather than assuming you can reclaim macOS space afterward.

How do I switch between Windows and macOS?

Boot Camp uses a restart-based choice. To select an operating system, restart the Mac and hold the Option key (also labeled Alt on some keyboards) during startup. Choose the macOS volume to return to macOS or the Windows volume to start Windows.

How do I remove Windows safely?

Use Boot Camp Assistant to remove Windows. Apple explicitly says not to use Disk Utility or another partitioning utility for this operation. The Assistant removes the Windows partition and returns its space to the macOS startup volume through the supported workflow.

Back up any files stored on the Windows volume before removal. Once the partition is deleted, those files are no longer available from the Mac’s internal disk.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What should I do if the installation does not go as planned?

Boot Camp Assistant does not offer Windows installation

Recheck the Mac model and processor in About This Mac. If the Mac uses Apple silicon, it is outside Apple’s documented Boot Camp list. If it is an Intel model, confirm that it falls within Apple’s listed family and introduction-year ranges before trying again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Assistant cannot proceed because of storage

Free space on the startup disk until at least 64 GB is available, then restart macOS and check the storage view again. If you want Apple’s recommended experience and automatic-update allowance, target 128 GB or more rather than merely clearing the minimum.

Windows Setup shows several partitions

Stop and identify the partition named BOOTCAMP. That is the target Apple specifies for Windows. Do not format or delete macOS, recovery, or other partitions.

The Windows installer finishes but Mac hardware is missing

Complete the Boot Camp installer in Windows. Apple’s support software and drivers are a required post-Setup stage, not an optional extra. If the installer did not open automatically, open it manually and finish it before judging the installation.

Windows 11 reports a requirement or driver problem

Check the specific Windows 11 requirement involved: compatible processor, at least 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI with Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, and compatible DirectX 12 graphics. Apple’s documented Boot Camp workflow is for Windows 10, so do not assume that a successful Windows 10 installation proves Windows 11 support on the same Mac.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Boot Camp still a sensible choice for Mac gaming?

Boot Camp remains useful when you have a supported Intel Mac and need Windows to run directly after a restart. Native dual boot gives Windows direct access to the Mac’s allocated hardware rather than sharing a running macOS desktop, which can suit games that require Windows-specific software or drivers.

The trade-offs are substantial in 2026. You must dedicate internal storage, restart whenever you change operating systems, install and maintain Apple’s Windows drivers, and decide whether to run Apple’s documented Windows 10 workflow even though Windows 10 is out of support. Windows 11 may offer a supported operating system in general, but on an Intel Mac its requirements and driver behavior must be verified model by model.

Situation Boot Camp decision
Supported Intel Mac, Windows-only game, and enough internal storage Boot Camp is the Apple-documented route, provided you accept the Windows 10 support status or verify Windows 11 independently.
Apple-silicon Mac Boot Camp is not in Apple’s documented compatibility list; use a different Windows strategy.
Less than 64 GB free Do not begin until the startup disk meets Apple’s minimum.
Need automatic Windows updates and a substantial game library Plan for 128 GB or more and remember that the partition is not normally resizable later.
Need a current, fully supported Windows release Check Windows 11 eligibility and Mac-specific drivers before committing to the installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell whether my Mac is Intel or Apple silicon?

Open Apple menu > About This Mac and read the processor or chip line. An Intel processor places the Mac in the hardware category Boot Camp was designed for; an entry identifying an Apple chip means Apple’s documented Boot Camp list does not apply.

Why does Windows Setup ask me to format the BOOTCAMP partition?

BOOTCAMP is the Windows target that Boot Camp Assistant creates. Formatting that named target prepares it for Windows files; choosing another partition could affect macOS or recovery data, so verify the name before confirming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Windows 10 safe to use after October 2025?

Windows 10 continues to run, but Microsoft says normal security updates, feature updates, and technical support ended on October 14, 2025. Anyone using it on a gaming Mac should weigh that support limitation against the fact that Apple’s documented Boot Camp instructions still describe Windows 10.

Do I need the USB installer on every supported Mac?

No. Apple says some supported models require a 16 GB or larger USB flash drive to create installation media, while newer listed models may not. Boot Camp Assistant will indicate whether removable media is needed during setup.
