You can play Xbox Cloud Gaming on a Steam Deck by installing Microsoft Edge in Desktop Mode, adding Edge to Steam as a non-Steam shortcut, and configuring that shortcut to open xbox.com/play. After setup, the shortcut appears in Gaming Mode and streams games through the browser; it does not install Xbox games on the Deck.
Microsoft’s documented method is a browser workaround built around a community-maintained Edge Flatpak. Microsoft says it does not actively maintain that package and does not officially support Edge on SteamOS, while Xbox describes Steam Deck cloud play as beta. Treat the procedure as the currently documented setup path rather than a native Xbox app.

What is the Xbox Cloud Gaming setup on Steam Deck?
The setup turns Microsoft Edge into a Steam library shortcut that launches the Xbox Cloud Gaming website in kiosk mode. Installation and configuration happen in Desktop Mode, but you launch the finished shortcut from Gaming Mode like any other non-Steam entry.
Games are rendered remotely and streamed to the Deck. The procedure therefore gives you browser access to cloud-play titles; it does not download the Xbox versions of those games to SteamOS or create a native Xbox application.

What do I need before starting?
You need a Steam Deck with SteamOS, access to Desktop Mode, and an internet connection suitable for streaming. The installation itself uses the Discover Software Center and the Konsole terminal, then Steam’s shortcut and controller settings.
- Desktop Mode: required for installing Edge and creating the shortcut.
- Discover Software Center: used to find Microsoft Edge.
- Konsole: used for one Flatpak permission command.
- Steam library access: needed to edit the shortcut’s name, launch options, and controller layout.
- A Microsoft account with cloud-play eligibility: the available catalog and plan access can change, so the games shown after signing in depend on your account and current service availability.
Microsoft recommends connecting a physical keyboard and mouse while you work through the setup. They are convenient, not mandatory: the Deck’s touch keyboard, touchscreen, and trackpads can provide the same basic text-entry and pointer functions.

How do I install Microsoft Edge in Desktop Mode?
Install Edge through Discover before you create the Steam shortcut. The exact application categories matter because Discover contains many unrelated packages.
- Press the Steam button on the Deck.
- Open Power.
- Choose Switch to Desktop and wait for the KDE desktop to load.
- Open Discover Software Center.
- Browse to Applications > Internet > Web Browsers.
- Find Microsoft Edge and select Install.
When Discover finishes, Edge is available from the desktop’s Application Launcher. Do not launch Gaming Mode yet; the remaining configuration has to be completed from the desktop and Steam’s desktop interface.
How do I add Edge to my Steam library?
Adding Edge as a non-Steam game gives Steam a library entry whose launch behavior and controller layout you can edit.

- Open the desktop’s Application Launcher.
- Find Microsoft Edge, right-click it, and choose Add to Steam.
- In the Add a Game window, select Microsoft Edge.
- Close the launcher and open Steam’s desktop client so the new shortcut appears in your library.
At this point the shortcut still represents the ordinary Edge application. The next command and launch-option changes are what make it open Xbox Cloud Gaming with the Deck controls in mind.

Why does the Flatpak override matter, and how do I run it?
Microsoft’s instructions give the Edge Flatpak read-only access to /run/udev. That device-information path is used so Steam Deck controller input can be exposed correctly to the browser shortcut.
- Open Konsole from the Application Launcher.
- Enter this command exactly:
flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edge- Press Enter. A successful command normally returns you to the prompt without opening a new window.
- Close Konsole after the command has been accepted.
The --user flag applies the permission to your user account, and :ro means read-only access. This is not a command to install a second browser or modify the whole operating system; it adjusts the Edge Flatpak’s access for this user.
How do I set the Xbox Cloud Gaming launch options?
Edit the Edge shortcut in Steam and preserve Steam’s existing placeholder arguments. Microsoft’s required options must be appended after the existing @@u @@ portion.

--window-size=1024,640 --force-device-scale-factor=1.25 --device-scale-factor=1.25 --kiosk "https://www.xbox.com/play"The complete line should retain the original Edge arguments and then include the window size, scaling values, and kiosk URL. The --kiosk switch opens the Xbox site as the shortcut’s focused destination instead of presenting a general-purpose browsing session.
Check the quotation marks around the URL and the spaces between each option. A missing space, altered URL, or deleted @@u @@ can make the shortcut launch incorrectly or fail to pass Steam’s link argument to Edge.
How do I configure the Steam Deck controller layout?
Use Steam’s supplied template so the Deck’s controls work with the browser session rather than behaving like a desktop-only mouse and keyboard window.
- With the renamed shortcut selected, open Controller layout.
- Choose Browse templates.
- Select Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad.
- Apply the configuration.
This template is the one Microsoft identifies for the Edge-based Xbox Cloud Gaming shortcut. If you skip it, the browser may still open, but the shortcut will not be using the documented control mapping.

How do I launch Xbox Cloud Gaming from Gaming Mode?
Once Edge, the permission override, launch options, and controller template are in place, switch back to the Deck interface and run the new non-Steam entry.
- Open the desktop menu and choose the option to return to Gaming Mode, or use the Deck’s normal mode-switching control.
- Open the Steam library.
- Navigate to the Non-Steam section.
- Select Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta).
- Choose Play.
Edge should open directly to https://www.xbox.com/play in the configured kiosk window. Sign in when the Xbox page asks for your account, then choose a cloud-play title that your current account and plan can access.
Microsoft also documents optional custom artwork for the Steam library entry. Artwork changes how the shortcut looks in your library; it is cosmetic and does not affect streaming, controls, or launch behavior.
What should I expect when playing?
Expect a browser-based cloud session, not a locally installed game. The Deck receives the game stream and sends your controller input back through the browser, so the available titles and your ability to launch them depend on the Xbox Cloud Gaming catalog, your plan, and account eligibility at that time.

That status describes the service experience on the Deck; it does not turn the shortcut into a separately supported SteamOS application.
Because the catalog and eligibility can change, a title visible to one account may not be available to another, and a game offered today may later require a different entitlement. The setup itself remains the same when the catalog changes because it points to the Xbox web player rather than a fixed list of installed files.
What should I check if the setup does not work?
Work through the failure point in order. Most problems come from using the wrong mode, omitting the permission command, or changing the launch-options string while editing the shortcut.

Edge is not available in Discover
Confirm that you are in Desktop Mode and browsing Applications > Internet > Web Browsers. Microsoft’s walkthrough relies on the community-maintained Edge Flatpak; if the package is unavailable in your Discover catalog, the documented procedure has no second official browser package to substitute.

Return to the shortcut’s Properties and inspect Launch Options. The original @@u @@ must remain, and the appended text must include the kiosk URL exactly as shown, including its quotation marks.
The page opens but Deck controls do not respond correctly
Run the Flatpak override again in Konsole, then revisit Controller layout > Browse templates and apply Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad. The override grants read-only access to /run/udev, while the template supplies the Steam-side mapping; both parts belong to the documented setup.
Typing is difficult in Desktop Mode
Connect a keyboard and mouse if available. Otherwise press STEAM+X to open the touch keyboard and use the touchscreen or trackpads to enter the command and launch options.
The entry is hard to find in Gaming Mode
Look under the library’s Non-Steam section and verify that the shortcut was renamed to Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta). Custom artwork is optional, so missing artwork does not indicate a failed installation.

No. The documented route is Microsoft Edge configured as a Steam shortcut. Microsoft explicitly describes the Edge Flatpak as community-maintained and says Edge on SteamOS is not officially supported, so this should be understood as a browser setup rather than a native Xbox application.
That distinction matters when diagnosing changes: SteamOS, Edge, or the Xbox web player can change independently, and Microsoft’s instructions do not promise that every future update will preserve the same behavior. Keep the shortcut’s launch options and controller template available so you can inspect them if an update changes how the browser starts.

Can I use the Deck without a keyboard and mouse?
Yes. Microsoft recommends external peripherals for convenience during setup, but they are optional. The built-in touch keyboard, touchscreen, and trackpads are specifically identified as alternatives, with STEAM+X opening the touch keyboard.
A keyboard and mouse mainly reduce the effort of entering the terminal command and long launch-options string. They do not add a required permission, improve the controller template, or change the cloud-play catalog.

Can I use a different browser instead of Edge?
Microsoft’s documented Steam Deck procedure is written for the Edge Flatpak and its Steam shortcut configuration. The supplied guidance does not establish another browser as an equivalent, officially documented path, so switching browsers would be outside these instructions.
Do I need an Xbox console for this Steam Deck setup?
The setup described by Microsoft and Xbox is browser-based on the Steam Deck and does not list a paired Xbox console as an installation step. You still need an account and plan with whatever cloud-play access applies when you sign in.
What if the Xbox web player changes its address later?
The shortcut stores the destination in its launch options. If Microsoft changes the player URL, open the shortcut’s Properties in Desktop Mode and replace the quoted address while leaving the other Edge options and the existing Steam placeholders intact.
Can I keep using Edge for ordinary web browsing after adding the shortcut?
Yes. The Steam entry is a configured launch shortcut; it does not prevent you from opening Edge normally from the Application Launcher. The kiosk flags apply when you start Edge through the Xbox Cloud Gaming shortcut.
