What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Launch Project Zomboid, choose Join, then use Internet for a public listing or Favorites → Add server when someone gives you an address. Enter the server IP and port in their separate fields, use the correct game build and Workshop content, and select Join server. The commonly cited default port is 16261.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Project Zomboid servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
The first connection may pause while the world and map data load. If the server requests Workshop items, let them download before trying again. Build 41 and Build 42 are separate compatibility targets, so checking the branch before troubleshooting saves the most time.

Check these requirements before you connect
Most failed joins are caused by a mismatch rather than a bad button click. Confirm the following with the server owner or listing:
- Exact game build: your client and the server must run the same branch. A Build 42 client cannot join a Build 41 server, and a Build 41 client cannot join Build 42.
- Workshop content: servers can require a specific set of mods. Every player needs the server’s matching items and load order.
- Address and port: a direct connection needs the server host name or IP and a separate port number.
- Passwords: a server may have its own join password. You also need an account username and password for your Project Zomboid player account on that server.
- Availability: a host-based game is reachable only while the host is playing; a dedicated or managed server must have its server process running.
If you are staying on Build 41 while Steam offers another branch, open Steam, right-click Project Zomboid, select Properties, open Game Versions & Betas, and choose legacy41. Build 41 savegames are not compatible with Build 42.

Choose the right way to join
The connection route depends on how the world is hosted. Use the table to identify the correct starting point.
| Server type | How you discover it | Persistence | Setup burden | Access control | What must match |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Public server | Join → Internet browser | Depends on the operator keeping it online | None for the player | Usually public; some are passworded or whitelisted | Build, server rules, and required Workshop set |
| Steam co-op host | Invitation from the host or the in-game invite flow | The host generally needs to remain in the session | Host configures settings in-game | Invite, password, or host settings | Build and any enabled Workshop items |
| Dedicated server | Direct address in Favorites | Can stay online without a player client, if the process is running | Install server software, configure it, and handle networking | Password, whitelist, or public listing | Build, configuration, and Workshop set |
| Managed server | Address and port supplied by the operator | Designed to remain online under the service plan | The operator handles installation; players still configure a favorite | Public, passworded, or whitelisted | Provider’s build and exact mod list |

This is the quickest route when you do not already have an address.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Start Project Zomboid and select Join from the main menu.
- Open the Internet tab. Wait for the server list to populate.
- Select a listing and read its description before connecting. Check the stated build, rules, player count, password requirements, and mod information rather than choosing only by name.
- Choose Join server. If the server uses a password, enter it when prompted. Supply your account username and password as requested.
- Allow the initial map and Workshop data to load. A long pause during the first connection can be normal, especially when a server has a large map or many mods.
If the listing reports missing Workshop items, follow the download or subscription prompt, wait for Steam and the game to finish, and reconnect. Joining a server with only part of its mod set usually fails during loading.

- From the main menu, select Join, then open Favorites.
- Select Add server.
- Enter a recognizable label, such as the community or friend’s name.
- Enter the host name or IP address in the IP field.
- Enter the numeric port in Server port. The common/default port cited in multiplayer guides is 16261, but use the number supplied by the operator if it differs.
- Enter your own account username and password. If the server owner set a server password, enter that in the server-password field as well.
- Save the entry, select it in Favorites, and choose Join server.
When an owner sends an address in the form example-host:16261, split it at the colon: put example-host in IP and 16261 in Server port. Do not paste the entire string into the IP field.
The first successful join creates or initializes your player account on that server. Keep using the same account username and password for later connections; changing them can make the server treat you as a different player.

Co-op is the simplest private option for a small group because the host creates the world from the normal game client.
What the host does
- Choose Host from the main menu.
- Configure the world, player, access, and Workshop settings.
- Start the world and wait until the host has fully entered the game.
- Use Steam’s invite function or the in-game invite flow to send invitations to friends.
What the invited player does
- Accept the Steam or in-game invitation.
- Let the client load the host’s required map and Workshop items.
- Enter the requested account credentials and any session password.
A co-op world is tied to the host session. If the host closes the game or the host’s connection fails, other players cannot continue in that session until the host starts it again. For a world that should remain available while the original host is offline, use a dedicated or managed server instead.

Join a dedicated server
A dedicated server has a separate server process, so it can remain available without the owner playing through the regular client. As a player, you still connect through Join → Favorites → Add server using the address and port supplied by the administrator.
What the owner must set up
- In Steam, open the Tools section and install Project Zomboid Dedicated Server.
- Run
StartServer64.batfrom the dedicated-server installation. - Complete the administrator-password prompt and finish the server’s initial configuration.
- Keep the server process running. A closed console or stopped process means the server is unavailable even if its address has not changed.
- Allow the server application through the machine’s firewall and configure the required network forwarding. The Steam hosting guide documents UDP ports 16261 and 16262 for dedicated hosting.
- Give players the externally reachable address, port, build branch, password or whitelist requirements, and complete Workshop list.
Players should not guess whether the server is ready. A newly started instance can still be generating its world; wait for the owner to confirm that startup has completed before attempting repeated connections.
Connect to a managed server
A managed service removes most server installation and maintenance work from the owner, but it does not change the player’s connection procedure.
- Obtain the service’s server address, port, current build, password or whitelist instructions, and Workshop collection or mod list.
- Open Join → Favorites → Add server.
- Enter the address and port in their separate fields, then save the favorite.
- Install or subscribe to every requested Workshop item. Remove unrelated client mods if the operator requires a clean profile.
- Select the saved server and choose Join server.
Managed hosting is useful when the group wants a persistent world but does not want to install, patch, secure, and restart dedicated-server software. The operator remains responsible for choosing a branch and keeping the server’s mod configuration consistent.

Build 41, Build 42, and the current multiplayer caveat
Build selection is a compatibility requirement, not an optional preference. Ask the administrator for the exact branch before changing anything in Steam. “Stable,” “legacy41,” and an Unstable or Build 42 branch are not interchangeable labels.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Indie Stone’s official Build 42.13 multiplayer announcement dated December 11, 2025, states that “Multiplayer is WIP and has been released for stress testing.” It strongly recommends playing only in co-op or on whitelisted servers, says more than 20 players on a server is currently inadvisable, and advises disabling debug. Future Unstable updates may disrupt ongoing multiplayer games.
For that official Build 42.13 stress-test branch, the guidance specifically says to disable all mods, including client-only mods. That instruction is stricter than the normal rule for a configured server, where the client must instead match the server’s required Workshop set. Follow the administrator’s instructions for the particular branch you are joining.
If you need to return to Build 41
- Exit the game.
- Open Steam and right-click Project Zomboid.
- Select Properties.
- Open Game Versions & Betas.
- Choose legacy41, allow Steam to finish changing files, and launch the game again.
Do not expect a Build 41 save to appear correctly in Build 42. Keep separate saves and confirm the branch every time you switch between a Build 41 and Build 42 server.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Workshop mods: matching is mandatory
A server’s mod setup is part of its connection requirements. The client needs the same Workshop items and, where the server specifies one, the same order and configuration.
- Read the server listing or ask the owner for the complete collection before joining.
- Subscribe to the requested items and let Steam finish downloading them.
- Restart the game if Steam has updated content while the game was open.
- Remove or disable unrelated mods when the server requires a clean profile.
- For the official Build 42.13 stress-test guidance, disable every mod, including mods that claim to be client-only.
If the game displays missing Workshop items, note the item names, finish the downloads, and retry. A successful subscription is not enough if the download or update is still in progress.
Troubleshoot a failed connection in this order
Work from the server outward. Changing several settings at once makes it harder to identify the cause.
- Ask whether the server is fully started. A dedicated instance may still be generating its world, and a co-op host may not have entered the game yet.
- Verify the exact branch on both sides. Compare Stable, Build 41, Build 42, or any named Unstable branch. Switch to legacy41 only when the server is confirmed to be Build 41.
- Correct the address fields. Separate a value such as
host:portat the colon. Put only the host in IP and only the number in Server port. - Check credentials. Re-enter the server password exactly, and use the same account username and password you used when the server account was created.
- Match Workshop content. Install every required item, wait for updates to finish, and remove conflicting extras. If this is the official Build 42.13 stress-test branch, disable all mods instead.
- Check the server process and firewall. For a self-hosted dedicated server, the owner must leave the server process running and allow it through the firewall. The documented dedicated-server UDP ports are 16261 and 16262.
- Try again after the server reports readiness. Repeated attempts cannot bypass a stopped process, an incompatible build, or a missing mod.
Common symptoms and likely causes
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Useful check |
|---|---|---|
| The server is visible but joining stops during loading | Missing or updating Workshop content, or a build mismatch | Compare the branch and complete every requested download |
| The game says the password is wrong | Server password differs from account credentials, or a typo was entered | Ask the owner which password is required and re-enter both credential types carefully |
| A direct favorite cannot be found | Address and port were entered in the wrong fields, or the server is offline | Split host:port and confirm the owner’s process is running |
| A Build 42 client is rejected by a Build 41 server | Incompatible branches | Switch to the server’s branch; use legacy41 for a confirmed Build 41 server |
| A dedicated server works locally but not for friends | Firewall or router forwarding is blocking the documented UDP ports | Have the owner check firewall rules and UDP 16261/16262 forwarding |
What to expect on your first successful join
The first connection can take longer than later joins because the client is receiving map data, checking Workshop content, and creating the server-side player account. Do not quit solely because the loading screen lasts longer than a normal local game. If loading never progresses, return to the troubleshooting sequence rather than repeatedly changing account names or passwords.
Once connected, remember that server rules, whitelist decisions, character persistence, wipes, and mod changes are controlled by the operator. Save the server in Favorites so you can reconnect with the same address and credentials, and ask before changing branches or installing a new mod.
