Include the port—27015 is common, but the host’s stated port always takes precedence.

Choose the connection method
Both methods ultimately send Team Fortress 2 to the same address. The console is usually the fastest option once it is enabled. Steam’s browser is useful if you want to save several addresses in Favorites and select among them visually.

The Steam client and its labels can change between updates. The Favorites and Add server by IP workflow is documented by community guides, while the exact current in-game browser interface has not been independently verified in official Valve documentation.
What you need before connecting
- The complete address: Ask the server operator for the IP address and port. A port is part of the address, not optional punctuation.
- The correct port:
27015is a commonly referenced default for a dedicated TF2 server. A server configured on another port will require that other number. - A password, if required: Get the password from the operator. Some servers accept it in the command; others prompt after the connection attempt.
- A running server: An offline or full server will reject or fail to complete a connection even when the address is correct.
- Network permission: Your firewall must allow Team Fortress 2 to communicate. If a firewall prompt appears, permit the game on the network you are using.
Use the address exactly as supplied. Do not replace the port with 27015 unless the host confirms that is the configured port.

Method 1: Join with the TF2 console
Enable the developer console
The console is disabled by default on many installations. Turn it on through Team Fortress 2’s advanced keyboard options. The default key is the backtick/tilde key, shown as ` or ~ depending on the keyboard layout.
- Launch Team Fortress 2 and open the keyboard settings.
- Open the advanced keyboard options.
- Enable the developer console setting.
- Apply the change and return to the game.
If you prefer the console to open when the game starts, launch TF2 with the -console argument. The exact Steam controls for adding a launch argument can vary with client versions, so check the current TF2 launch-options field rather than relying on an older screenshot.

Open the console and enter the address
- Press the backtick/tilde key to open the console. If that key does not work, check your keyboard layout and the key binding shown in the advanced options.
- Type the command in this form, including the port:
connect SERVER_IP:PORTFor a server using the commonly referenced port, the pattern is:
connect 203.0.113.42:27015The example address is only a format illustration. Substitute the real IP and port supplied by the server host. Do not try to connect to the example address.

- Press Enter.
- Wait for TF2 to change levels and establish the connection. If the server is full, offline, unreachable, or protected by a password, the attempt will not finish normally.
The most common syntax error is leaving off :PORT. A bare IP does not tell TF2 which service to contact when the server is not using the expected default.
Supply a server password
If the host gave you a password, you can append it to the connection command:
connect SERVER_IP:PORT; password SERVER_PASSWORDReplace both variables with the host’s values, then press Enter. Community instructions differ on whether every server accepts the password in the same command. If the server instead asks for a password, enter it at the prompt and submit it. Keep the password’s capitalization and punctuation exactly as provided.
Reconnect without retyping the address
After a successful connection, the console provides two useful recovery commands:

retryattempts to reconnect to the last server.reloadreloads the connection to the server you are currently on.
Use retry when you were disconnected and want to return to the previous server. Use reload when the current connection needs to be reloaded without entering the full address again.
Method 2: Join through Steam’s server browser
This route avoids typing a console command each time and lets you keep a server in Steam’s Favorites list. The following labels come from community documentation and may be named slightly differently after a Steam client update.

- Open the Steam client.
- Choose View from the top menu, then select Game Servers.
- Open the Favorites tab.
- Click Add server by IP.
- Paste or type the complete server address in
SERVER_IP:PORTform. - Add the address to Favorites.
- Select the newly added server in the list and choose Connect.
- If the server is password-protected, enter the password when Steam or TF2 requests it.
Adding a server to Favorites does not make an offline or full server available. It only saves the address so you can select it again. If the entry does not respond, verify the address and port with the operator before removing and re-adding it.
Method 3: Connect automatically with a launch option
TF2 can attempt a direct connection every time it starts when the Steam launch options include:

+connect SERVER_IP:PORTOpen TF2’s current Steam properties page, find its launch-options field, and enter the command. Replace the variables with the actual server address. Start TF2 normally afterward.

That can be convenient for a private server you use constantly, but it is inconvenient when you want to play another mode or server. For that reason, community guides generally favor the console for normal use. Remove the +connect entry when you no longer want automatic connections.
Troubleshoot a failed connection

Check the address before changing settings
Most failed direct connections are caused by an incorrect IP or port, not by a damaged installation. Copy the address again from the host, make sure there are no spaces inside it, and confirm whether the server has moved from the commonly referenced port 27015. If the host says the server is full or offline, changing console settings will not resolve that condition.
Check firewall access
Operating-system firewalls can prevent TF2 from reaching a remote server. Allow the game when the firewall asks for network access. If you previously denied the request, open the firewall’s allowed-app controls, permit TF2 on the network profile you are using, and retry the same address.

Which route should you use?
Use the console for occasional direct joins
The console requires a one-time setup but gives you the shortest repeatable procedure: open it and run connect IP:PORT. It also supports retry and reload when a connection drops or needs reloading.

The Steam browser is preferable when you want saved entries and a list you can select from. Add each complete address once, then return to Favorites instead of retyping it. Because Steam’s labels can change, look for the equivalent of Game Servers, Favorites, and Add server by IP if the wording differs.
Use a launch option only when automatic joining is intentional
+connect is useful for a dedicated setup that should always start on one server. It is a poor choice for a general installation because the command runs on every launch and can interfere with ordinary menu-based play until removed.

For the shortest dependable workflow, enable the console once and use the exact address supplied by the server host, including its port. Keep Steam Favorites for servers you revisit, and reserve the launch option for installations that are meant to connect automatically every time.
