To upload a custom Minecraft modpack, first lock the exact Minecraft version, mod loader and loader version, and Java version. Then prepare a server pack containing only server-compatible mods and the pack’s configuration, install matching server software, upload the files into the server directory, start once to complete setup, and give every player the identical client pack. A client profile ZIP is not automatically a usable server pack.

What you are actually uploading
A Minecraft modpack has a client side and a server side. The client side may include graphics, menus, minimaps, keybind helpers, shaders, and other features that run only on a player’s computer. A dedicated server needs the compatible gameplay mods, their dependencies, and the configuration that controls the shared world.

CurseForge’s 2025 server-pack tutorial defines a server pack as “a specially prepared version of your modpack that allows it to be run on a multiplayer server.” Treat that as a separate deliverable rather than copying every file from a desktop profile.

Write these four compatibility values down before uploading anything. If one is unknown, stop and identify it from the pack profile or loader documentation instead of guessing.

Prepare the server pack from your profile
Use the server-pack files when the author provides them
Some packs include a separate server-pack download. Prefer it: the author has already removed client-only content and arranged the server directory. Unzip it locally, inspect the top-level folders, and keep the included startup scripts or properties files unless the host requires a different format.
Assemble a pack when no server download exists
Build a working copy from the profile rather than editing your only copy. The usual core is:

Depending on the pack, you may also include startup scripts, server.properties, worlds or maps, resource files, and a server-icon.png. CurseForge’s tutorial specifies 64×64 pixels for the optional icon. Do not add a file merely because it exists in the client profile; add it because the server software or pack requires it.
Export a private CurseForge profile for friends
CurseForge’s Share Profile feature creates an importable ZIP for private use. In the profile, choose the sharing or export action, create the ZIP, and select the content needed by the receiving players. CurseForge support’s normal guidance, when you are not distributing a world, is to include config and mods. A share code is an alternative to downloading the ZIP; the 2026 support guidance says a code remains valid for seven days.
This export is a convenient way to give clients the same files. It is not proof that the ZIP is ready for a dedicated server: review its mods and add or remove server files separately.

Do not confuse private sharing with a public CurseForge project
A public project submission has a different ZIP structure. The archive must place manifest.json at its root and use an overrides directory for files such as configs, scripts, maps, saves, resources, or mods. CurseForge’s current support guidance says vanilla profiles are not supported for project submission and identifies Forge and Fabric projects as supported. Public publication also requires project metadata and moderation approval.

Do not upload a public-project archive to a host and expect it to contain an already-installed server.
Remove client-only mods before uploading
A dedicated server cannot load many visual or interface mods. Common examples include renderer replacements, shader loaders, purely cosmetic HUDs, client keybind utilities, and minimap features that have no server component. The exact list changes by Minecraft version and loader, so inspect each mod’s documentation and its release notes.
Keep a manifest of what you removed. If a mod offers separate client and server files, use the server-capable file; if its documentation says “client only,” leave it out of mods. Also check required libraries: removing a library because it looks cosmetic can cause a different mod to fail.
The safest workflow is to test the intended mod set in a client first, as Fabric’s Windows guidance recommends, then install the matching server JAR and test the same set on the server. A successful client launch does not guarantee a successful dedicated-server launch, but it exposes missing downloads and version mistakes early.

Install matching server software
Choose the loader before creating the server directory
Install the server software for the same loader family, Minecraft version, and loader version recorded earlier. Use the official installer or server JAR for that release. CurseForge directs administrators to the official NeoForge, Forge, and Fabric installers when a ready-made server pack is unavailable.
Do not install a vanilla server and then copy Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge mods into it. Vanilla will not provide the loader APIs those mods require.
Run the installer or JAR once
- Create an empty server directory, or open the directory supplied by your host.
- Run the selected loader installer or server JAR in that directory, following its first-start prompts.
- Accept the Minecraft EULA in the generated
eula.txtonly after reading its terms. - Start the server again so the loader creates its normal folders, including
modswhen applicable. - Stop the server cleanly before copying the pack into place.
If no mods directory appears, you probably ran a vanilla JAR, used the wrong installer, or launched it from another directory. Correct that foundation before uploading mod files.
Use a host’s one-click installer when it matches exactly
Some managed hosts offer a modpack selector or a server-pack upload tool. Choose the one-click route when it supports your exact loader and Minecraft version; it can create the correct directory layout and Java setting for you. If the pack is not listed, use the host’s manual ZIP or file-panel method instead. A one-click installation does not remove the need to verify loader, Java, mod versions, and client parity.
Upload the pack to the server
Manual file-panel or FTP route
- Stop the server so files are not being changed while you upload them.
- Open the host’s file manager or connect with the transfer method it documents.
- Enter the server’s main directory—the directory containing the loader files and
eula.txt, not a nested backup folder. - Upload the prepared server-pack contents. If you upload a ZIP, extract it in that directory and check that
modsis directly under the server root rather than under an extra folder. - Confirm that
config,kubejswhen used, and any required scripts or properties files are at the same level as the loader’s files. - Start the server and watch the live console until startup completes or a clear error appears.
Craftlands’ documented manual workflow places mod JARs in /mods and restarts after upload. The same directory principle applies on other hosts, although their file-panel labels can differ.

Upload only the files the server needs
Do not upload your entire client installation, launcher cache, screenshots, shader packs, or another game instance’s saves. Keep a clean local server-pack folder so a later reinstallation reproduces the same result. If you are moving an existing world, copy it deliberately and make a backup first; a world is data, not a substitute for the mod and configuration files that created it.
Complete the first start
The first launch may generate additional directories and configuration files. Let it finish, stop it normally, and inspect the log for missing dependencies, rejected mods, or a Java error. Only after the server starts cleanly should you make it public or invite players.
Give players an identical client pack
Every player must use the same Minecraft version, loader family, loader version, mod versions, and relevant configuration. “Almost the same” is not enough: a single different dependency or gameplay setting can produce a mod-list mismatch or disconnect during login.
- Export the private CurseForge profile ZIP or provide the server author’s approved client-pack download.
- Have each player import it into the same launcher ecosystem and select the resulting profile.
- Tell players not to add visual or convenience mods until they have joined successfully; then add only mods documented as compatible with this server.
- When you change a server mod or shared config, publish a new client pack and label it with the new version.
Keep the server pack and client export in separate folders. The client export can contain files that a dedicated server must not load, while the server pack can omit files a client needs for rendering or interface features.

The practical decision is compatibility first. A convenient installer that supports the wrong loader cannot run your pack, while a manual upload is worthwhile when it gives you the required Java, loader, scripts, or file access.

Troubleshoot the first failed launch

Read the log instead of deleting random files
The first fatal error is usually more useful than the final “server stopped” line. Record the Minecraft version, loader version, Java version, and the complete mod filename named in the error. Change one variable at a time, restart, and keep a copy of the last known-good pack. Randomly removing libraries can create a second failure that hides the original cause.

Recover with a clean rebuild
If the directory has accumulated failed experiments, stop the server and make a backup of the world and configuration. Create a new empty directory, install the exact loader again, accept the EULA, and upload only the known-good server pack. This distinguishes a bad mod from a damaged or misplaced installation.
Pre-launch checklist
- The Minecraft version is written down and identical on server and clients.
- Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge is identified, with the exact loader build recorded.
- The Java runtime matches the loader and is selected in the host panel or launch environment.
- The server pack contains compatible
mods, required dependencies, and the relevantconfigandkubejsfolders. - Client-only visual and interface mods are absent from the dedicated server.
- The loader was run once in the actual server directory, and
eula.txtwas handled. - Uploaded files are directly under the server root; there is no accidental extra folder level.
- The server starts cleanly before players connect.
- Players received one controlled client export and know which profile to import.
- A backup exists before importing an existing world or changing the pack.
Keeping future updates reproducible
Version every server-pack archive and note the Minecraft version, loader build, Java version, and date in the filename or accompanying notes. When updating, test the new pack in a separate directory first. Replace the server and client exports together so players are not left with a different dependency set.
Keep the original ZIP, the previous working pack, and a recent world backup. If an update fails, restore the previous server files and matching client export rather than trying to make an old world run on a half-updated installation. This simple rollback plan is more reliable than troubleshooting a live server while players are connected.
