What makes Xbox-to-Java crossplay possible
Xbox uses Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, while most community servers run Minecraft: Java Edition. These editions use different network protocols, so a Bedrock client cannot normally join a Java server by entering its Java address and port alone.
Geyser translates the two protocols
Geyser is the bridge between the editions. The project describes it as “a program that allows Minecraft: Bedrock Edition clients to join Minecraft: Java Edition servers, allowing for true crossplay between both editions.” It runs alongside the Java server, accepts Bedrock traffic, translates it, and passes the resulting connection to the Java server.

Install the Geyser plugin or mod that matches your server platform. Supported choices include common Paper or Spigot servers, Fabric, NeoForge, and proxies supported by Geyser. Geyser does not turn the server into Bedrock Edition; Java remains the authoritative server and some edition-specific mechanics or menus can behave differently.
Floodgate changes the login requirement
With ordinary Geyser authentication, each Bedrock player must also own Minecraft: Java Edition because the connection ultimately authenticates to the Java server. Floodgate is an optional companion that allows a Bedrock player authenticated through Xbox Live to join without a paid Java Edition account.
Floodgate does not eliminate the need for a Microsoft/Xbox account, and it does not bypass Bedrock multiplayer restrictions. Choose one authentication model deliberately: keep normal online authentication when every Bedrock player owns Java, or install Floodgate and select its authentication mode when Xbox-authenticated Bedrock access is the goal.

Your hosting choice determines who controls the network port, updates, backups, and troubleshooting.

Whichever option you choose, verify before subscribing or migrating that the server can run a supported Java platform and expose a separate UDP listener for Geyser.
Self-hosted setup: complete procedure
1. Prepare the Java server
- Install and start a supported Java server platform such as Paper, Spigot, Fabric, or NeoForge.
- Accept the server’s license prompt where required, start it once, and stop it cleanly so its configuration folders are created.
- Record the Java server’s local address and Java port. Do not assume the Java port is also suitable for Bedrock; Geyser normally needs its own UDP listener.
- Confirm that a Java Edition client can join locally before adding crossplay. This separates ordinary server problems from Geyser networking problems.
2. Install the matching Geyser component
- Download the Geyser plugin for a plugin-based server, the Geyser mod for a supported mod loader, or the appropriate build for your supported proxy.
- Place the component in the server’s plugin or mods directory according to that platform’s instructions.
- Restart the server rather than relying on a hot reload. A restart lets Geyser create its configuration and bind its listener cleanly.
- Read the startup log and verify that Geyser is loaded without a dependency or version error.
3. Configure the Bedrock listener
- Open the Geyser configuration file generated on the first successful start.
- Set the Bedrock listener address to the interface that should receive connections. Binding to the intended network interface matters on machines with multiple adapters; an address that is reachable only locally will not work for remote players.
- Set the Bedrock port to 19132 unless your host requires another unused port. Bedrock traffic uses UDP, not just TCP.
- If you select another port, write down the exact value. Players must enter that same Bedrock port, and your firewall and router rules must use it.
- Set Geyser’s authentication mode to match your choice. Use normal online authentication when all Bedrock players own Java Edition; use Floodgate’s mode only after Floodgate is installed and configured.
- Save the file and restart the server. Check the log again for the listener address and port, and for warnings about a port already in use.
4. Install Floodgate only when its login model is needed
- Install the Floodgate component that matches your server platform and the Geyser build.
- Restart and confirm that Floodgate loads before allowing players to test. A mismatched build can leave Geyser running while Floodgate authentication fails.
- Keep the generated Floodgate key and related files private. They are server credentials, not files to distribute to players.
- Tell Bedrock players to sign in with the Microsoft account they use for Xbox or Windows Bedrock. Floodgate changes Java-account requirements; it does not create an account or remove Microsoft authentication.
5. Open the network path
For a server at home, complete both parts of this step:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Windows firewall: create an inbound rule allowing UDP traffic on the chosen Bedrock port for the server process or port. A TCP-only rule will not be enough.
- Router forwarding: forward the chosen external UDP port to the server computer’s stable LAN address. Reserve that computer’s local address in the router or assign it a reliable static address so the rule does not point to a different device later.
Do not assign the same UDP port to another service such as voice chat, query, or a second Bedrock listener. If the server is on a home network, remote players use your public IPv4 address or a supported tunnel. Players on the same network can normally use the server’s LAN address.
Never publish your public address together with administrative credentials. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections, ordinary port forwarding may not work; use a supported tunnel or managed host instead of repeatedly changing firewall rules.

6. Test from outside your network
After the server is running, test the actual public path rather than only connecting from the host computer. Geyser’s setup guidance recommends:
geyser connectiontest <ip> <port>
Replace the placeholders with the public address and Bedrock UDP port. Run the test with the server online and interpret a failure as a networking or listener issue before changing player accounts. A successful local connection does not prove that router forwarding or the public firewall path is correct.
How Windows Bedrock players join
Windows Bedrock includes a manual server-entry form, so it is the simplest client for validating your setup.
- Launch Minecraft Bedrock on Windows and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game.
- Select Play, open the Servers tab, and choose Add Server.
- Enter a recognizable server name.
- Enter the server’s public hostname or IP address. On the same LAN, use the server’s LAN address instead.
- Enter the configured Bedrock UDP port. The default is 19132; use your custom value if the host or configuration requires one.
- Save the entry and select it to join.
If the server appears unreachable, confirm that the Windows client is using the Bedrock edition, not Java Edition, and that the address and port are the Bedrock values. Minecraft’s help guidance documents manual server entry for computer and mobile Bedrock clients and identifies 19132 as the default Bedrock port.

How Xbox players join
Why Xbox does not show the same Add Server box
The native Xbox console build is limited to featured servers and does not provide the same direct Add Server form available in Windows Bedrock. This is a console interface limitation, not proof that Geyser is misconfigured.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use a currently maintained console workaround
A commonly used community workaround is BedrockConnect. Its official project documentation explains that its DNS method redirects featured-server lookups to a menu where a player can enter a custom server IP and port. The method relies on third-party infrastructure and can stop working or change after Minecraft or Xbox network updates.
Because DNS addresses and exact console steps can change, obtain the current values and instructions from the project’s official documentation immediately before setup. Do not copy an old DNS value from an undated guide. Treat the workaround as a convenience layer: it does not replace Geyser, Floodgate, a reachable UDP port, or Microsoft account permissions.
When a workaround is not acceptable
If your group cannot use a third-party DNS service, use a supported hosted or Realm-style route that all intended players can access, or have the Xbox player join from a Windows Bedrock device. A Java server with Geyser can be technically correct while the Xbox console still lacks a native way to type its address.

Client, account, and subscription requirements
- Compatible versions: keep the Java server, Geyser, Floodgate when used, Windows Bedrock, and Xbox game updated. Geyser emulates a Bedrock protocol version; a client that is too old or too new for the installed build can be rejected even when networking works.
- Microsoft sign-in: every Bedrock player must be signed in with a Microsoft account. Floodgate does not remove this requirement.
- Multiplayer permissions: the account’s privacy and family settings must allow multiplayer and joining cross-platform games. Child accounts may require a parent or organizer to change these settings.
- Online subscription: Xbox multiplayer requires the applicable online subscription for that account and region. A server cannot override a console account that is not entitled to online multiplayer.
- Java authentication choice: players using Geyser’s normal online mode need Java ownership; players using Floodgate follow Floodgate’s Xbox-authenticated path instead.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Checks and fix |
|---|---|---|
| Windows says the server is unavailable | Wrong address or port, Geyser not listening, or UDP blocked. | Check the Geyser log, confirm the Bedrock port, allow that UDP port in the operating-system firewall and router, then run geyser connectiontest <ip> <port> from outside the home network. |
| Java players can join but Bedrock players cannot | The Java listener works while the separate Bedrock listener or forwarding rule does not. | Verify Geyser is loaded, bound to the intended interface, and using the forwarded UDP port. Do not test only the Java TCP port. |
| Connection reaches the server but login is rejected | Authentication mode does not match the player’s account ownership or Floodgate setup. | Use normal online authentication only when the Bedrock player owns Java. If Java ownership is not required, install and configure Floodgate and verify its component loaded successfully. |
| Only local players can connect | Missing router forwarding, changing LAN address, carrier-grade NAT, or a public firewall block. | Reserve the server’s LAN address, forward the UDP port to it, test from a different network, and use a supported tunnel or managed host when inbound connections are unavailable. |
| Xbox cannot find or add the server | Expected console UI limitation or an outdated third-party workaround. | Xbox does not offer the same native manual-entry form as Windows. Follow the currently maintained BedrockConnect instructions, or use a supported hosted/Realm route. |
| Players are kicked after an update | Client and Geyser protocol versions are out of sync. | Update the Java server platform, Geyser, Floodgate if installed, Windows Bedrock, and Xbox game; then restart and read the startup log for compatibility warnings. |
| Intermittent failures or a listener that will not start | The selected UDP port is already consumed by another service. | Check voice chat, query, another Geyser instance, and other UDP applications. Assign an unused port and update the Geyser configuration, firewall, router, and player entries together. |
Maintenance and security checklist
- Back up the Java world, server configuration, plugin or mod directory, and Floodgate data before upgrades.
- Update Geyser and Floodgate in step with the server platform and client versions rather than replacing only one component.
- After every port or router change, test from outside the home network; a local test can conceal a broken public route.
- Keep the Bedrock UDP port separate from unrelated services and document which external port maps to which internal machine.
- Limit administrative permissions to trusted Java or Floodgate identities, and do not share authentication keys or server-panel credentials.
- Review Xbox and Microsoft privacy settings when a single player cannot join while others can; account restrictions are separate from server configuration.
Practical decision guide
Use self-hosting when control matters most
Self-hosting is appropriate when you can configure a router and firewall, need unrestricted plugin or mod control, and accept responsibility for uptime, backups, public-IP changes, and updates. It is also the clearest way to inspect Geyser’s logs and choose the listener port yourself.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use managed hosting when networking is the obstacle
A managed host is the better fit when you need a stable public endpoint, automated backups, or a control panel and do not want to expose a home network. Confirm in writing that the plan provides an externally reachable UDP port and supports the current Geyser and Floodgate builds. A host that advertises only ordinary Java connectivity is insufficient for Bedrock clients.
Choose the authentication model before inviting players
If everyone already owns Java Edition, normal Geyser authentication keeps the account model straightforward. If Xbox and Windows Bedrock players should join using their Microsoft identities without purchasing Java Edition, Floodgate is the relevant option, provided you can maintain its configuration and protect its generated credentials.
What a successful setup looks like
A working crossplay server has four independently verified layers: the Java server accepts Java players; Geyser is loaded and listening on the configured Bedrock UDP port; the public network path reaches that port; and each Bedrock account is permitted to play online under the selected authentication model. Windows Bedrock can then use Play → Servers → Add Server. Xbox players use a current console workaround such as BedrockConnect because the native console UI does not expose equivalent manual entry.
When diagnosing a failure, test those layers in that order. Updating the Xbox game or changing DNS cannot repair a closed UDP port, and opening a port cannot repair a disabled Microsoft multiplayer permission. Keeping the protocol bridge, authentication choice, network path, and client permissions separate makes crossplay predictable to operate.
