To join the Nine Mortal Ways in Where Winds Meet, follow the jewelry lead from San Qian in Harvestfall Village, return the marked Large Pile of Jewelry to the supposed elder who sent you, then accept the Nine Mortal Ways invitation and complete the membership dialogue. The handoff matters: this sequence can resemble Well of Heaven recruitment, but the receiving NPC and your final choice determine the branch.
How do I join Nine Mortal Ways?
- Check the Sects clue. A current independent handbook says sect clues become available at level 10. Check your live Sects panel for the clue and current requirements, since the handbook notes its balance version is unverified. (Where Winds Meet Handbook)
- Find San Qian. Go to Harvestfall Village in western Qinghe and speak with San Qian. The handbook says to buy information pointing to an elder near a village tree.
- Take the jewelry request. The supposed elder asks you to retrieve jewelry. Treat this as the start of a recruitment trick, not proof that you are already on the Well of Heaven path.
- Retrieve the marked item. At the quest marker, use Wind Sense or Celestial Seize as the available interaction permits and obtain the exact item named “Large Pile of Jewelry.”
- Return to the same elder. Give the jewelry to the NPC who sent you. The reveal that follows is the branch point: accept the Nine Mortal Ways invitation, then finish the membership dialogue. The item handoff or invitation by itself does not make the sect active.
- Verify membership. Open the Sects panel and confirm Nine Mortal Ways is the active sect. The handbook says only one sect can be active at a time; if you belong to another, complete its departure process before final acceptance.
Why the jewelry quest can be confusing
The Harvestfall jewelry objective overlaps with a Well of Heaven-looking recruitment sequence. An older walkthrough also describes the fake-elder setup and says the reveal offers a choice between joining Nine Mortal Ways and pursuing Well of Heaven through its genuine elder. (All Things How) Follow the receiver, not just the objective: returning the item to the supposed elder and accepting the Nine Mortal Ways invitation is the route for this sect; pursuing the genuine Well of Heaven recruiter is a separate outcome.
- If more than one initiation quest is active, check the exact item name and the NPC receiving it before you submit anything.
- If you want Nine Mortal Ways, do not continue with the genuine Well of Heaven recruiter after the reveal.
What joining Nine Mortal Ways gives you
The current handbook identifies Mortal Rope Dart as the immediate martial-art reward and describes disguise and trickster activities as part of the sect’s identity. It also states a weekly activity expectation of 100 Fun Points. Treat that number and the current task rules as version-sensitive: check the sect task panel before planning around them. The handbook distinguishes Mortal Rope Dart from Unfettered Rope Dart, which it says has a separate Skill Theft acquisition route.
Sect membership is optional, and the beginner guide says players can remain sectless; it also notes that martial arts may have acquisition routes outside faction membership. (Where Winds Meet Guides, Beginner Guide)

The handbook describes a separate invitation circumstance involving a Rogue Decree bought from the Harvestfall Wine Seller. Icchantika can reject it, producing a Nine Mortal Ways invitation branch. This is an alternative circumstance, not the main jewelry route. The handbook cautions that this outcome alone does not establish that you are permanently locked out of Midnight Blades.
