For recovery, set the encoder to launch after Windows starts—or after the streaming account signs in if it needs the desktop—then test whether it reconnects to the intended YouTube live event. For a stream that should continue even while the home PC is off, a cloud service such as StreamNeo is an alternative.
What Windows settings can—and cannot—do
In Windows, open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours. Set the hours when the PC is normally in use so Windows can aim routine automatic restarts outside that period. Labels and available choices can vary by Windows release.

Active hours are a scheduling aid, not an uptime guarantee. Windows updates cannot be stopped permanently through the consumer pause setting; a pause is temporary and updates eventually need to resume. Avoid disabling security updates indefinitely to protect a broadcast. See Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ.
For managed Windows editions, administrators may have additional update and restart policies, but policy availability and behavior depend on Windows edition and version. Microsoft documents these options in Manage device restarts after updates; ordinary Home users should not assume enterprise policy settings apply to their PC.

There is also a version-specific change, not a universal uptime promise: Microsoft said that updates released on and after July 28, 2026 are being grouped to align some restart-requiring driver, .NET, and firmware updates with monthly security updates for Windows 11 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1. The rollout is gradual and updates will not be held indefinitely. Details are in Microsoft’s August 14, 2026 announcement.
Make the encoder launch after a restart
A scheduled task can start an encoder after Windows boots or after the streaming account signs in. Use a startup trigger if the encoder can run without an interactive desktop; use a logon trigger if it needs the signed-in user’s desktop or session. Microsoft documents both task triggers and launching an executable at sign-in: LogonTrigger object, Starting an Executable When a User Logs On, and New-ScheduledTaskTrigger.

- Confirm the encoder’s startup needs. Check whether it requires a logged-in account, desktop interaction, a particular working directory, or a delay for network and other startup dependencies. The correct trigger depends on this setup.
- Open Task Scheduler. Create a task that runs the encoder executable. Set its trigger to At startup or At log on, as appropriate, and specify the correct executable path and working directory. If the encoder starts before the network or a required service is ready, test whether a short delay helps.
- Review the action and account. Verify that the task runs under the Windows account and permissions the encoder needs. Do not assume an encoder’s graphical interface or saved session behaves the same when launched outside an interactive sign-in.
- Check encoder reconnect options. Look for documented auto-start or reconnect settings in your encoder. YouTube offers auto-start and auto-stop options for stream workflows, but their existence does not establish that every encoder will rejoin the same event after a reboot. - Test a real reboot before relying on it. During a planned maintenance window, restart the PC and verify, in order, that Windows starts the task, the encoder connects, YouTube accepts the feed into the intended event, and the watch page is live. A task starting successfully proves only the first step; it does not prove the event recovered or that viewers kept the same live page.
Protect the YouTube connection and channel
An encoder uses a YouTube stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: store it securely and never expose it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs. YouTube explains the encoder setup and stream-key handling in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings. A custom stream key can be reused, but keep it private.

For Indian music—including bhajans, kirtan, Gurbani, and Hindi music—having permission to use the recording and composition matters. A continuous broadcast is not exempt from copyright rules. Use music you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s applicable policies before scheduling a long-running playlist. Do not assume that a recording being devotional, traditional, or freely available to listen to means it is cleared for rebroadcast.
Add and test a backup encoder
A backup encoder is a separate failover path, not a way to prevent Windows Update from restarting the primary PC. YouTube recommends testing the backup by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then verifying that the viewer player rolls over to the backup. Follow YouTube’s streaming tips and perform the test deliberately before depending on failover.

A dedicated hardware encoder is another production option, but it does not control Windows Update. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events; choose one only after checking that it fits the channel’s stream workflow and backup plan.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise a complete archive for a 24/7 broadcast. If you need a full recording, plan separate recording and archive handling, or consider splitting the broadcast only after checking YouTube’s current behavior and testing the exact workflow. Do not assume the live watch page and a complete replay are the same thing.

Troubleshoot a stream that did not return
- The task did not run: Check the task’s trigger, executable path, working directory, account permissions, and Task Scheduler history. Confirm that the selected startup or logon trigger matches whether the encoder needs an interactive desktop.
- The encoder opened but did not connect: Check its reconnect and auto-start settings, network availability, and whether the stream URL and key are still configured. Keep the key private while checking saved settings.
- YouTube received a feed, but the intended live event did not resume: Application relaunch and event recovery are separate. Verify the event’s settings and test whether your encoder can reconnect to that event; do not assume a new connection means the same watch page is live.
- The primary failed and viewers did not roll over: Confirm that a backup encoder is configured for the event and repeat YouTube’s failover test by stopping the primary or disconnecting its Ethernet. A backup that has not passed this test is not a proven recovery path.
- The broadcast ended but the full day is not archived: YouTube’s stated automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed full 24-hour replay. Use a separate recording plan and verify it before depending on the archive.
