Sometimes you can keep playing after a game’s online servers close, but there is no universal offline switch. Your result depends on what the remote service provides: optional multiplayer, account authentication, cloud saves, or the game’s core world and rules. Check the dated shutdown notice, install any supported offline update, export saves and purchased content while the service still works, then choose among an official offline mode, a supported LAN or dedicated server, a community replacement, or no viable route. A disc, digital download or backup drive preserves local files; it does not recreate missing server-side gameplay or authorization. What determines whether a game still works after its servers shut down?
The decisive question is not whether you bought a disc or downloaded the game. It is which functions the game requires from the publisher’s servers. The European Commission distinguishes games that use servers only for authentication from games whose events, anti-cheat, saves, social systems, or core simulation run remotely. - Optional online features: A local campaign or sandbox may continue, while matchmaking, leaderboards, events and cloud services disappear.
- Authentication-dependent games: The installed program may contain the game, but it refuses to launch until an account or license check succeeds.
- Server-dependent worlds: The remote service supplies missions, world state, inventory, progression or simulation. A local backup cannot replace those components without an official or technically compatible substitute.
Also identify who operates the service. A developer, publisher, platform holder and contracted server operator can be different entities, so read the exact notice and latest patch notes for your edition and platform rather than relying on a general studio announcement.
What should I do before the shutdown date?
Do the preservation work while the game’s account and download services are still available. These steps cannot guarantee future play, but they preserve every option the title actually offers.

- Save the official notice. Record the shutdown date, affected platforms, edition, and the functions that will disappear. Keep a copy of the latest patch notes and any support article that explains migration.
- Install the final supported build. Apply an official offline, LAN or compatibility update before downloads and authentication endpoints are disabled. Do not assume that putting a launcher in offline mode bypasses a game’s own required service.
- Export progression exactly as instructed. If the game has an in-game migration command, use it while online and wait for confirmation. Keep an untouched copy of the original local save before replacing or exporting anything.
- Claim purchased items. Some publishers require vehicle packs, season content or account rewards to be redeemed in a shop or headquarters before an offline conversion. Complete those claims while the account service is reachable.
- Back up legitimate local files. Preserve installers that your license permits you to retain, patches, configuration files and local saves. - Document your account and edition. Note the platform account, game version, region and add-ons associated with the save. This information helps diagnose a later reinstall, but it does not create a new authorization method.
Back up first, then test any export or migration on a copy. A publisher may keep online and offline saves separate, and a later export can overwrite progress made in the offline file.
How can I tell whether an official offline mode exists?
Search the publisher’s dated shutdown notice, patch notes and in-game mode selector for an explicit offline or local-play statement. A generic “play offline” launcher setting is not proof that the game itself can run without its own service.

Look for labels such as Offline Mode, Local Play, LAN, Host Server or Export to Offline Save. Follow the game-specific sequence, including any requirement to connect once after installing the patch. If the menu is absent in the final supported build, do not infer that a hidden switch exists.
Separate local play from online remnants
An offline build may retain the campaign, vehicles or locally stored progression while removing multiplayer, rankings, live events, user-generated content, cloud saves and online-only achievements. Treat the publisher’s exclusion list as part of the feature specification, not as a temporary outage.
Verify the result without risking the original save
After exporting, launch with the network disconnected only after making a backup. Confirm that the intended profile loads, then restore connectivity and check whether the game keeps separate online and offline files. Never overwrite the only copy of a save to perform this check.
What are the realistic ways to keep playing?

Can I host a LAN or dedicated server?
Only if that particular game exposes a local-network mode, peer-to-peer hosting, or publisher-supported server software. Confirm the edition, server download, license terms, ports, hardware and network requirements before buying a machine or changing your router.
Use official server software when available
Minecraft illustrates the model: its official site provides separate Java and Bedrock server downloads, and states that both are free to download. That is evidence for Minecraft only; it is not a general promise that another publisher’s server can be recreated. (Minecraft official server download)
Understand what self-hosting does not solve
A dedicated server may restore a match or shared world, but it will not automatically restore account authentication, a missing item catalog, official matchmaking, anti-cheat, live events or cloud progression. Players may also need matching game versions and a compatible client. Hosting a server for a game that never supported it can require reverse engineering and may violate terms or local law.
Secure a private host
Use the publisher’s documentation where possible, restrict administrative access, keep the operating system patched and avoid exposing an unmaintained service directly to the public internet. A computer purchased for hosting is useful only after game-specific support is confirmed.
Are community servers and replacement projects safe or legal?
A community replacement can restore part of a discontinued game, but it is neither publisher-authorized nor guaranteed to remain online. The Commission describes fan-run servers and reverse-engineering projects alongside concerns about security, intellectual-property rights and moderation. (European Commission report)
- Use a project that clearly supports your legitimately acquired edition and platform.
- Prefer transparent source code, signed releases and a documented maintainer history; scan downloads and isolate unfamiliar executables.
- Read the project’s terms and your local law before bypassing authentication, modifying binaries or redistributing files.
- Use a separate account where practical and never provide original publisher credentials to an unofficial service.
- Expect incomplete features, changing compatibility, volunteer moderation and sudden closure.
A replacement service can implement only what its maintainers have recreated. It cannot magically recover server data that was never exported, and it may not reproduce purchases, achievements or licensed music.

What happened to the original The Crew?
The original The Crew is a clear example of a game whose server dependency defeated physical ownership. In a December 14, 2023 notice, Ubisoft said the title would remain playable until March 31, 2024 and would then become inaccessible on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Amazon Luna and Ubisoft+. The notice does not provide an offline conversion, so retaining its disc or installed files is not a supported way around the shutdown. (Ubisoft shutdown notice)
Do not treat this outcome as evidence about every racing game or about the sequels. It shows why the exact title, platform and final publisher instructions matter.
How does The Crew 2’s offline mode work?
Ubisoft released Hybrid Mode for The Crew 2 on October 16, 2025. When connected, a player can choose Online or Offline Mode; when no connection is detected, the game launches in Offline Mode. Existing online progression must be moved with the in-game Export to Offline Save action while online. (Ubisoft Hybrid Mode instructions)
Export in the right order
- Connect to the service and open the game’s mode selection.
- Choose Export to Offline Save and wait for the operation to finish.
- While still online, claim eligible purchased vehicle packs, Season Pass content and Ubisoft Connect rewards in The House or an HQ.
- Make a backup of the resulting local save before playing offline.
Online and offline saves remain separate. Ubisoft warns that progress made offline will not carry back into the online save, and a later export can overwrite offline-only progress. Offline play excludes multiplayer, leaderboards, LIVE Summits, specified shops, user-generated content and some online-only achievements. Those are Ubisoft’s stated rules for The Crew 2, not a template for other games.
The available material establishes this October 2025 release for The Crew 2. It does not establish that The Crew Motorfest has the same released offline mode, so check a current notice for that title rather than assuming the feature carries over.
What does U.S. law allow when an authentication server disappears?
In the United States, the current text of 37 CFR 201.40(b)(19), displayed October 30, 2026, covers specified circumvention involving lawfully acquired complete games when a necessary external authentication server has ceased providing access. Its personal-use provision concerns restoring local gameplay on a PC, console or locally connected systems, not access through an online service. (eCFR §201.40)

This is a narrow rule, not a blanket right to run public private servers, distribute circumvention tools, pirate a game or reproduce absent server-hosted content. It also does not prove that a technical workaround exists for your title. Library, archive and museum preservation provisions have different conditions, and individual circumstances may require legal advice.

On June 16, 2026, the European Commission responded to the Stop Destroying Videogames citizens’ initiative. It concluded that a general legal obligation to leave every game playable after discontinuation would not be proportionate and did not propose that requested law. The initiative met the required validity thresholds, including at least one million qualifying signatures; that figure is a procedural threshold, not a count of affected players or games. Existing consumer rules can still matter case by case. Where a qualifying discontinuation fails contractual conformity expectations, a consumer may have a proportionate refund or other remedy, depending on the contract, the product and the circumstances. The response does not promise an automatic full refund, and a proposed voluntary stakeholder code would not be an enacted guarantee.
How should I evaluate a game before buying it?
For a future purchase, investigate the game’s demonstrated offline behavior rather than assuming that a physical edition is permanent.
- Does the game launch and save locally without an internet connection after installation?
- What exactly does the online requirement authenticate or supply?
- Can progression, purchases and saves be exported, and are there separate online and offline profiles?
- Does the publisher document LAN, peer-to-peer or dedicated-server support?
- Which features, achievements and downloadable items disappear if service ends?
- Is the installer available from a source that permits legitimate re-download or backup?
A DRM-free catalog can reduce client or launcher dependence, but it does not guarantee permanent access to a game’s online features. GOG describes its curated DRM-free PC catalog and optional client; verify each game’s own multiplayer and service requirements before purchase. (GOG about page)

- “Authentication server unavailable”: Look for a final publisher patch or documented local-launch procedure. Reinstalling the same build usually does not remove a server check.
- Launcher works but the world is empty: The game may rely on remote missions, inventory or events. Check whether an offline save export was required.
- Save is missing: Confirm platform, account, edition and save location; restore the untouched backup only after checking the game’s migration instructions.
- LAN clients cannot connect: Verify identical versions, supported editions, local firewall rules and the game’s documented host process. Port forwarding cannot repair an unavailable publisher service.
- A community client crashes: Stop using it until its source, release integrity and compatibility are verified. Do not supply your primary account credentials to an unofficial project.
If the game’s indispensable server-side components are gone and no authorized offline or local replacement exists, the accurate answer may be that the title is no longer playable. A storage purchase, driver utility or video-streaming subscription cannot substitute for those components.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move a shut-down game’s save from one platform to another?
Only when the publisher provides cross-save or an export format that both platforms support. A copied PC file normally cannot be read by a console edition, and platform account licenses and downloadable content may not transfer with the save.
Will reinstalling the game years later restore its license check?
No. Reinstallation restores program files, not a discontinued authentication endpoint. If the final build still requires that endpoint, you need the publisher’s offline conversion or another lawful, compatible route.
Can router port forwarding bring a closed server back?
No. Port forwarding helps clients reach a server that you are legally running; it cannot recreate a publisher’s account database, matchmaking service or remote game logic. Use it only after the game documents a self-hosted server.
How can I preserve evidence for a refund request?
Keep the purchase receipt, platform account details, shutdown notice, edition and any support correspondence. Contact the seller or platform promptly under the consumer rules that apply where you bought the game; remedies depend on the contract and circumstances.
