That switch does not automatically remove every death penalty. Durability loss, dropped inventory, and who can loot a death container are controlled by separate settings.

What the gear-retention setting does
BloodBoundEquipment is the server rule that determines whether equipment worn by a player remains equipped after death. With the value set to true, most equipped armor and weapons stay with the character instead of appearing in the death container.
The setting is about equipment, not everything in the player’s inventory. Consumables, crafting materials, resources and other carried items can still be placed in the death container according to the world’s normal death rules. A hat is also an explicit exception in the settings reference, so do not promise players that every visible item will remain bound.

In practice, this makes deaths less disruptive for cooperative PvE worlds and can prevent a defeated player from losing their primary combat kit in PvP. It does not make the player invulnerable, prevent a death container from appearing, or guarantee that durability remains unchanged.
Dedicated server: change the setting safely
Dedicated servers read gameplay rules from ServerGameSettings.json. Use the provider’s configuration editor if one is supplied; otherwise edit the file directly while the server is stopped.

- Stop the server. Do not edit a live JSON file while the process is writing a save.
- Back up the current configuration. Keep an untouched copy of
ServerGameSettings.jsonso you can restore the previous rules if the file becomes invalid. - Open the gameplay settings file. Locate
ServerGameSettings.jsonin the server’s persistent configuration or save-data area. - Add or change the property. Use the exact spelling and capitalization shown here:

- Review the other death rules. Decide separately whether durability should be lost and who may loot containers. Binding equipment alone does not answer those questions.
- Save and restart. Start the server through its normal control panel or service command, then allow the world to load completely before testing.
For a persistent dedicated installation, keep customized configuration files in the server’s save-data Settings folder. The server guide recommends this arrangement because updates can overwrite files stored elsewhere. A host’s panel may abstract this path; in that case, the panel’s gameplay-settings editor is the authoritative place to enter the value.
JSON formatting mistakes to avoid
- Use the Boolean value
true, not the quoted string"true". - Do not add a second
BloodBoundEquipmentproperty. Duplicate keys can produce unpredictable results. - Keep commas between neighboring properties, but not after the final property in a JSON object.
- Preserve the file’s existing braces and indentation; formatting is flexible, while valid syntax is not.
Local or solo save: use the save’s settings file
For a locally hosted world, the relevant file is ServerSettings.json inside that save. On Windows, the documented location is:

- Open the folder corresponding to the world you want to change.
- Open
ServerSettings.jsonin a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting. - Set
BloodBoundEquipmenttotrue, or add the property if it is absent. - Save the file, launch the same world, and test with a controlled death.
Replace <YOURSAVE> with the actual save-folder name; do not literally create a folder with angle brackets. If several saves exist, check the modification date or load each world in-game to avoid editing the wrong one.

Gear retention is separate from durability loss
A player can keep an item after death and still have that item lose durability. The settings reference identifies Death_DurabilityFactorLoss as the percentage of maximum durability removed from equipped items when equipment is not blood-bound. It lists 0.125 (12.5 percent) as the default, but that default is version-sensitive and should be checked against the live server configuration.
Setting Death_DurabilityFactorLoss to 0 disables death-related durability loss. Change this only if the community wants both equipment retention and no durability penalty; BloodBoundEquipment by itself addresses whether the gear stays with the character, not whether its condition changes.
Death_DurabilityLossFactorAsResource controls the other side of the durability rule: how much of the durability lost at death is converted into corresponding repair materials in the death container rather than disappearing solely as durability. This lets an administrator choose between a harsher loss, a recoverable materials drop, or no durability loss, depending on the value used by the world.

Who can loot the death container
DeathContainerPermission is independent of blood-bound equipment. It governs access to the items that still drop when a player dies, including inventory items and any recoverable materials produced by the durability rule.
Anyone: any player who reaches the container can loot it. This creates the greatest risk in an open PvP environment.ClanMembers: members of the dead player’s clan can recover the contents, which suits cooperative servers that want team retrieval without unrestricted access.OnlySelf: only the dead player can loot the container. This protects personal inventory from teammates and strangers but can make recovery difficult if the player dies in a dangerous area.
Changing container permission does not bind armor or weapons. To keep the equipped combat set, use BloodBoundEquipment; use the permission setting to decide what happens to the remaining death-container contents.

Choosing a complete death rule set
Server administrators should evaluate more than one switch. The same equipment rule can feel forgiving in PvE and still be too generous for a competitive PvP server, especially when dropped inventory is freely lootable.

Before publishing a rule set, confirm the world’s PvE or PvP mode and whether the world already existed when you changed the file. The dedicated-server guide warns that some settings cannot be changed after world creation, even after a restart. If a valid-looking value has no effect, world-creation restrictions are one of the first things to investigate.
How to verify that the change worked
Use a controlled test rather than relying on a player’s memory of an earlier death.
- Record the current armor, weapon, hat and durability values.
- Move a small amount of nonessential inventory into the character’s bags so you can identify the death container.
- Die in a safe, recoverable location or use the server’s normal testing procedure.
- Check which equipped items remain on the character and which items appear in the container.
- Inspect durability before and after death to determine whether a separate loss factor is active.
- Log in with a second account or clan member, when appropriate, to confirm the selected container permission.
Test again after an update or configuration migration. A server can load an older copy of the settings file, and a host panel may write its own values when the service restarts.
Troubleshooting when equipment is still lost
The property is misspelled or has the wrong type
The key must be spelled BloodBoundEquipment with matching capitalization, and the value must be the Boolean true. A typo, a quoted value, or a duplicate property can leave the game using the previous rule.

The wrong file was edited
Dedicated servers use ServerGameSettings.json; local saves use the world’s ServerSettings.json. Confirm the active save name and the server’s persistent Settings directory. Editing a template, backup, or unused save does not change the running world.
The server was not fully restarted
Stop the service, save the file, and start the server through its normal workflow. A browser-based editor may require an explicit save or an “apply” action before the restart.
An update replaced the customization
Compare the active file with your backup. Keep customized files in the persistent save-data Settings folder recommended by the server guide, and reapply the value if an update restored defaults.

Some dedicated-server fields are unavailable after the world has been created. If the file is valid, the server restarts cleanly, and the setting is still ignored, check whether that field is creation-time-only for the current game version. You may need to set the rule before creating a new world rather than changing the existing one.
The player is checking the wrong item
Blood binding concerns most equipped armor and weapons. A hat is called out separately in the settings reference, and carried inventory follows death-container rules. Compare each category independently before concluding that the setting failed.

- Decide whether the goal is equipment retention, zero durability loss, recoverable repair materials, restricted container access, or a combination.
- Identify whether the world is dedicated or local and open the corresponding settings file.
- Back up the file and verify that it belongs to the active save.

Common player questions
Does this keep armor and weapons?
With BloodBoundEquipment set to true, most equipped armor and weapons remain with the player. Hats are not covered in the same way by the settings reference.
Will I lose durability even if my gear stays equipped?
Possibly. Durability is governed by Death_DurabilityFactorLoss, which is separate from equipment retention. Check the active server value.

Can another player take my dropped items?
That depends on DeathContainerPermission. The available choices are Anyone, ClanMembers, and OnlySelf.
Is the setting different for PvP?
The key is the same, but its consequences differ. In PvP, administrators often pair retained equipment with a durability penalty or looter access so deaths still carry a risk.
Why did changing the file do nothing?
Check the file location, JSON syntax, restart procedure, persistent settings folder and whether the world locks that field after creation. Also verify that you are checking an equipped weapon or armor piece rather than a hat or carried inventory.
