The fastest way to teleport in Minecraft is with /tp, the short alias for /teleport. To move yourself to a known location, enter /tp @s 100 64 200. The three numbers are the destination’s X, Y and Z coordinates, in that order. To move another player or entity, put a target selector or name before the coordinates, as in /tp Alex 100 64 200.

The command works in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, but the available optional arguments and permission setup differ. This guide explains the syntax, selectors, relative coordinates, player-to-player teleporting, rotation, command blocks and the fixes for common errors.

What the Minecraft teleport command does

Microsoft’s Bedrock reference describes the command simply: it “Teleports entities to specific locations.” The command can move your own character, another player, a group selected with a target selector, or other entities such as animals. /tp and /teleport are aliases, so you can use either spelling in chat, command blocks and functions.

A coordinate destination always uses X Y Z order:

  • X moves east or west.
  • Y controls height.
  • Z moves north or south.

For example, /tp @s 100 64 200 sends the command executor to the world position X 100, Y 64, Z 200. Replace those values with the coordinates you want. A fixed coordinate identifies the same world position every time the command runs, while a relative coordinate uses the execution position as its reference.

Before you run a teleport command

Enable cheats or obtain permission

Commands are not available to an unprivileged player simply because the syntax is correct. In Bedrock, Microsoft documents /teleport as requiring cheats and assigns it to the Game Directors permission level. Turn on cheats in the world settings before testing, or ask the server owner for the required permission. Java worlds and multiplayer servers likewise require an operator or equivalent command permission.

Enabling cheats can affect a world’s achievement availability in Bedrock. If you are playing on a server, permission plugins or server configuration may impose additional restrictions beyond the command itself.

Open the correct input

In a normal game, open chat and begin with a forward slash. In a command block, enter the command without relying on a player’s current position unless that is intentional. The same teleport forms can be used in command blocks, repeating systems and functions, but the execution context determines how relative coordinates are calculated.

Java Edition teleport syntax

These are the core modern Java patterns:

Purpose Command
Teleport yourself to coordinates /tp <x> <y> <z>
Teleport a target to coordinates /tp <target> <x> <y> <z>
Teleport a target to another entity or player /tp <target> <destination-target>
Move the nearest player eight blocks upward /tp @p ~ ~8 ~

The destination-target form lets one entity be moved to another entity’s current location. For example, /tp @s Alex moves the executor to the player named Alex when that destination form is accepted by the current Java command parser.

Teleport yourself to coordinates in Java

  1. Stand somewhere safe and open chat.
  2. Enter /tp @s 100 64 200, replacing the numbers with the destination X, Y and Z.
  3. Press Enter. The command returns your character to the new position if you have permission and the syntax is valid.

In contexts where the command executor is already the intended target, Java also accepts the shorter coordinate form /tp 100 64 200. Using @s makes the target explicit and is easier to reuse in command blocks or functions.

Teleport another player in Java

Put the player name or selector before the destination coordinates. To send Alex to a known location, use /tp Alex 100 64 200. To send the nearest player eight blocks upward from the command’s execution point, use /tp @p ~ ~8 ~.

To move everyone to the executor’s location, use the target-and-destination form /tp @a @s when the command context and parser support it. Be careful with @a: it selects every player who matches the selector, including players who may not expect to be moved.

Bedrock Edition teleport syntax

Microsoft’s Bedrock forms include:

Purpose Command
Teleport the executor to coordinates /teleport <destination: x y z>
Teleport a selected target to coordinates /teleport <victim: target> <destination: x y z>
Explicit self-target example /tp @s 100 64 200
Send every player to the executor /tp @a @s
Move pigs ten blocks upward /tp @e[type=pig] ~ ~10 ~

The alias /tp is shorter, while /teleport mirrors the name used in Microsoft’s reference. Bedrock also exposes optional rotation, facing and block-checking arguments, so label examples that use those options as Bedrock commands rather than assuming identical behavior in every Java version.

Teleport yourself in Bedrock

With cheats enabled, enter /tp @s 100 64 200. The selector @s means the executing entity, normally you when you type the command in chat. In a command block, @s refers to the command’s execution entity or context, so use an explicit target if the block must always move a particular player.

Teleport another player or entity in Bedrock

Use a name or selector before the destination. /tp Alex 100 64 200 sends Alex to those coordinates. The official examples also show /tp @a @s, which sends all players to the command executor, and /tp @e[type=pig] ~ ~10 ~, which moves every pig selected by the command ten blocks upward relative to the execution position.

Selectors: choosing who or what moves

A selector replaces a specific player or entity name. The most useful selectors for teleporting are:

Selector Selects Typical use
@s The executing entity Teleport yourself or the entity running a command
@p The nearest player Move the closest player to a command block or trigger
@a All players Send a whole group to one destination
@e All entities Use with filters to move mobs or other entities

Selectors can include filters. The Bedrock example @e[type=pig] limits the selection to pigs, preventing unrelated entities from being moved. A broad selector such as @e can include players, mobs, dropped items and other entities, so add a type or other filter before using it in a repeating command.

Teleport to another player

Use a player name as the destination

When the destination-target form is supported, /tp @s Alex moves the executor to Alex’s current position. To move a different player to Alex, use /tp Steve Alex, replacing both names with valid online players. Names are case-sensitive according to the game’s player-name handling, and the destination must be present and selectable.

Use selectors for dynamic destinations

/tp @p @s sends the nearest player to the executor. /tp @a @s sends all players to the executor, as shown in Bedrock’s official examples. These commands are useful for meeting points, lobby return buttons and multiplayer events, but check who the selector will match before executing a command that affects everyone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Teleport to a player’s coordinates instead

If the destination-target form produces a syntax error in your edition or version, use explicit coordinates: /tp Alex 100 64 200. This does not follow Alex if Alex moves; it sends the target to the fixed X, Y and Z position you supplied.

Relative coordinates with tildes

A tilde (~) tells Minecraft to calculate a coordinate from the command’s execution position. A bare tilde means “use the current value.” A number after the tilde adds an offset.

Command Result
/tp @s ~ ~10 ~ Move the executor ten blocks upward
/tp @s ~5 ~ ~-5 Move five blocks on X and five blocks in the negative Z direction
/tp @p ~ ~8 ~ Move the nearest player eight blocks upward
/tp @e[type=pig] ~ ~10 ~ Move selected pigs ten blocks above the execution position in Bedrock

Relative coordinates are calculated from where the command executes, not automatically from the player who will be moved. A chat command normally executes at the player’s position. A command block executes at the block’s position, and an execute command can change the reference context. That distinction is crucial: /tp @p ~ ~8 ~ in chat raises the nearest player relative to you, while the same text in a command block uses the block as the reference point.

Use relative coordinates when you want an offset, elevator, launch pad or reusable mechanism. Use fixed coordinates when every activation must lead to one known destination.

Choosing safe fixed coordinates

Whole-number coordinates identify a block-centered position in Java command documentation. Decimals let you specify a more exact location, which is useful when you need consistent alignment or want to control where inside a block the entity arrives. Always provide all three coordinates; omitting X, Y or Z causes a syntax error.

Y is the safety-critical value. A destination underground, inside a solid wall or high above the ground can trap the player or cause fall damage. For a first test, choose an open area and a Y value with headroom. If a teleport leaves you stuck in terrain or falling, run another teleport to a known safe X, Y and Z location rather than repeatedly retrying the original destination.

Rotation, facing and block checking in Bedrock

Set the arrival direction

Bedrock supports optional yaw and pitch values after the destination coordinates. The documented example /teleport @s 100 64 200 0 45 sets the destination and rotation. Use these values when a player should arrive looking toward a landmark, doorway or chosen direction. The exact orientation you want may require adjusting the values in small increments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Face a position or entity

Bedrock’s teleport syntax can make the arriving entity face a coordinate or another entity. This is useful for guided tours, cutscenes and portals that should point players toward a build. Because facing arguments are optional, a basic coordinate command remains the safest starting point; add facing only after the destination itself works.

Check for occupied blocks

Bedrock documents a Boolean checkForBlocks argument. Setting it to true requests block checking and can stop the teleport when the destination is occupied. For example, /teleport @s 100 64 200 true uses the documented block-checking form. This is valuable for player-built teleporters where sending an entity into solid blocks would be worse than refusing the move.

Optional arguments are version- and edition-sensitive. If a rotation, facing or Boolean example is rejected, use chat tab completion and the command syntax shown by your current game rather than inserting Java-only arguments into Bedrock or vice versa.

Using teleport commands in command blocks

Command blocks let you turn the same syntax into a pressure-plate teleporter, repeating elevator, lobby return point or function-driven transport system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Place a command block in a world where you have permission to use it.
  2. Open its interface and enter a teleport command such as /tp @p 100 64 200 or a relative form such as /tp @p ~ ~8 ~.
  3. Choose the block type and activation settings. An impulse block runs when triggered; repeating and chain blocks can build a sequence.
  4. Test with one player before using @a or a broad entity selector.

Relative coordinates are particularly useful in command blocks because they move an entity by an offset from the block or execution context. A fixed destination is better for a permanent portal endpoint. If a block repeatedly teleports the same player, inspect whether the selector still matches after the first activation and add the appropriate filters or timing control.

Why a teleport command does not work

“Unknown command” or no permission

Check that cheats are enabled in Bedrock and that your account has the required operator or server permission. A correctly typed command still fails when the world or server does not allow commands.

Syntax error or red text

  • Confirm that you are using the syntax for Java or Bedrock, not the other edition.
  • Check the argument order: target first, then destination coordinates.
  • Supply all three values in X Y Z order.
  • Check selector spelling, brackets and filters, such as @e[type=pig].
  • Remove optional rotation, facing or Boolean arguments and test the basic form first.
  • Use chat tab completion. The official Minecraft commands guidance notes that tab completion can fill coordinates for commands that require them.

The command runs but moves the wrong entity

Inspect the selector and execution context. @p means nearest player, not necessarily the player who typed the command. @s means the executing entity, which can differ between chat, a command block and an execute chain. Replace a broad selector with a player name or an explicit filtered selector while testing.

The player arrives inside blocks or falls

Choose an open destination with a safe Y value, then retry. In Bedrock, use the documented checkForBlocks option when you want the command to reject occupied destinations. For mechanisms that send players to a fixed location, verify the endpoint by standing there first and recording its coordinates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A relative teleport goes to an unexpected place

Identify where the command executes. Chat uses the player’s position; a command block uses its own location; an execute context may deliberately shift the reference point. Replace tildes with fixed coordinates to isolate the problem, then restore relative offsets once the target and destination are confirmed.

Java and Bedrock differences at a glance

Area Java Edition Bedrock Edition
Basic alias /tp and /teleport /tp and /teleport
Core coordinate order X, Y, Z X, Y, Z
Selectors @s, @p, @a, @e @s, @p, @a, @e
Relative coordinates Tildes use the command execution position Tildes use the command execution position
Optional rotation/facing Use the syntax offered by your current Java version Documented yaw, pitch and facing options are available
Block checking Check the current Java command suggestions for available arguments Documented checkForBlocks Boolean can reject occupied destinations
Access Operator or equivalent server permission Cheats and the required Game Directors permission level

The shared core is simple: choose a target, provide X Y Z coordinates or a destination target, and make sure the command is permitted. Differences matter when you add optional arguments, rely on parser-specific forms or move the command into a command block.
