The only dependable way to keep a carried item after dying in MW4 DMZ is to place it in a backpack’s Secure Slot before you take the risk. Everything else in your loadout remains exposed until you successfully exfiltrate. A Secure Slot protects selected items, not an entire weapon build; after extraction, move the recovered loot into the FOB Stash, where it is safe between deployments.
What do you keep when you die in MW4 DMZ?
Death or a failed exfiltration removes unsecured equipment and the cash carried during that run. That includes weapons, armor, consumables, keys, ordinary loot and picked-up money. Your account-level progress is different: XP, Weapon XP and camo progress still count, and your longer-term Stash and Bank are not wiped.

| Situation | Kept | Lost or at risk |
|---|---|---|
| Successful exfil | Carried loot returns to the FOB for placement in Stash | Nothing from the extracted loadout |
| Death or failed exfil | XP, Weapon XP, camo progress, Stash, Bank and items in Secure Slots | Unsecured weapons, armor, consumables, keys, loot and run cash |
| Operator death | The Operator can be recovered as MIA, including traits and Dog Tag rank if rescued | The gear carried at death is not restored by recovery |
The system is deliberately a risk-and-extraction loop: valuable equipment and resources remain on the line until you leave successfully.
How does a Secure Slot protect loot?
A Secure Slot is a special backpack space that preserves the item placed in it if you die. It protects only the item or items occupying those designated spaces; ordinary backpack cells do not gain the same protection.

Get a backpack with a Secure Slot
The official FOB progression guide identifies the Medium Backpack as the first practical craftable backpack with Secure Slots. Its listed crafting cost is 50 Synthetics and 5 Rigid Synthetics. Windows Central reported that the Medium Backpack unlocked at DMZ Level 2 and that the Large Backpack recipe unlocked at DMZ Level 34 during the launch version; those progression requirements may change with later patches, so check the current in-game recipe.
Move the item before the dangerous part of the run
Open your backpack and transfer the highest-value eligible item into the Secure Slot immediately. Reported examples include recipes and Weapon Manuals. Weapons cannot be placed in Secure Slots, so this system cannot preserve a complete gun loadout.

- Enter the FOB and equip a backpack that displays a Secure Slot.
- In the backpack inventory, highlight the recipe, manual or other valuable eligible item.
- Use the inventory command to move it into the Secure Slot; confirm that it is visibly in the protected section rather than ordinary storage.
- Continue only after verifying the item’s location. Picking it up without moving it leaves it exposed.
- Exfiltrate when the remaining unsecured loot is no longer worth the risk.
Is a Secure Slot better than a normal backpack?
Yes, but only for a narrow purpose. A normal backpack provides capacity; a Secure Slot provides death protection for selected eligible items. Neither backpack type makes the rest of a carried run safe.
| Storage or outcome | Survives death? | Items protected | Weapons qualify? | When protection applies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FOB Stash | Yes | Everything stored there | Yes, subject to Stash capacity | Before deployment and after storage |
| Successful exfil | Yes | The entire successfully extracted run | Yes | Once extraction completes |
| Secure Slot | Yes | Only items placed in the slot | No | Immediately after placement |
| Ordinary backpack space | No | None on death | Weapons remain exposed | No death protection |
What should you put in a Secure Slot?
Prioritize an item that is difficult to replace and useful for future objectives, such as a recipe or Weapon Manual. Do not spend the slot on a common consumable when a rare progression item is available. Because weapons are ineligible, protect the item with the greatest strategic or crafting value instead of trying to save an entire loadout.

When should you exfil to avoid losing the rest?
Exfil as soon as the value of additional loot is lower than the chance of losing the unsecured gear. A Secure Slot is a safety net for selected items, not permission to keep pushing indefinitely. Once the protected item is secured, the remaining decision is whether the run’s weapons, cash and ordinary loot justify another fight, contract or map rotation.
A practical risk check
- Leave immediately if your main objective item is already secured and your armor, ammunition or squad position is deteriorating.
- Bank the run after finding high-value unsecured loot rather than searching for a perfect backpack.
- With a full squad and a clear extraction route, an extra objective may be reasonable; alone or hunted, extraction is usually the better trade.
What happens to your Operator after death?
A dead Operator becomes Missing in Action (MIA). At the FOB, you can spend in-game cash to recover that Operator and continue using its accumulated progression. Recovery preserves the Operator’s traits and Dog Tag rank when the system allows a rescue, but it does not return the weapons, backpack contents or other gear lost in the failed operation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAlso popular on Amazon
- Includes PS5 version of game
Dismissing the MIA Operator gives up those accumulated traits, so recovery is the safer choice when you have enough FOB cash and want to retain the Operator’s development.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do Stash and Bank differ from carried loot?
The Stash is the persistent storage area in the FOB and is shared by Active Duty Operators. Items placed there remain available between deployments. The Bank is also persistent, unlike cash carried in the field, which can disappear when you die. The initial official guide lists Stash capacity as 40 items and 12 weapons; later updates may alter those limits.

- Return to the FOB inventory screen.
- Move extracted items from the post-deployment inventory into Stash.
- Confirm the items appear in Stash before launching another deployment.
Can Rescue Packs or Weapon Insurance replace Secure Slots?
Do not rely on Rescue Packs or Weapon Insurance Contracts as guaranteed substitutes. A pre-launch report described Rescue Packs as expected loadout-preservation items but noted that their operation and pricing still required launch confirmation. The current official guides covered here do not establish either feature as a live replacement that saves all carried gear, so treat any later claim as unconfirmed until an official update documents it.
What is the safest loot routine?
- Craft or equip the Medium Backpack, or any later backpack that explicitly lists a Secure Slot.
- Before leaving the FOB, identify the single item you most need to keep.
- Place that item in the Secure Slot as soon as you acquire it.
- Keep ordinary loot, weapons and cash in their normal spaces, understanding that death can remove them.
- Choose an extraction route before taking another high-risk fight.
- After a successful exfil, transfer the haul into Stash so it is no longer tied to the next deployment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does XP count if I fail to exfil in MW4 DMZ?
Yes. Failed operations still award DMZ XP, Weapon XP and camo progress, even though the unsecured carried gear is lost.
Can I save a weapon in a Secure Slot?
No. Weapons are not eligible for Secure Slots. Use the protected space for an eligible high-value item such as a recipe or Weapon Manual.
Do all Active Duty Operators share the same Stash?
Yes. The FOB Stash is shared by Active Duty Operators, so an item stored there can be accessed from another active Operator between deployments.
What happens if I dismiss an MIA Operator?
Dismissing the Operator abandons its accumulated traits and Dog Tag rank. Recovery at the FOB costs in-game cash but lets you continue that Operator’s progression.
