How to Layer and Group Images in Google Docs (Step-by-Step)

To layer images in Google Docs, use Pages mode and choose In front of text or Behind text from the image toolbar. To overlap several images, control their stacking order, and move them as one object, create an embedded drawing with Insert > Drawing > New; add the images there, use Actions > Order, then select them and choose Actions > Group.

This distinction matters because Docs’ normal document canvas is designed mainly for an image’s relationship to text. The Drawing canvas is the practical solution for image-to-image compositions such as collages, diagrams, layered screenshots, and title cards.

What is the difference between layering and grouping images in Google Docs?

Layering controls which visual element appears above another. In a document, that usually means placing an image in front of text, behind text, or—inside a drawing—above or below another image. Grouping combines multiple objects so you can select, move, resize, or reposition the composition as one unit.

Google Docs has two work areas with different strengths:

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • The document canvas: best for one image alongside paragraphs, a floating image over text, or a watermark-style background.
  • The embedded Drawing canvas: best for overlapping images, precise object order, and a multi-image layout that should move together.

Use the document canvas when text flow is the main concern. Switch to a drawing when the images themselves need to interact as objects.

How do I put an image in front of or behind text?

Use the image toolbar’s In front of text or Behind text setting. These controls are available only when the document is in Pages mode; they do not work in Pageless mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the document on a computer. In the Docs menu, choose File > Page setup, select Pages, and apply the setting if the document is currently pageless. The exact menu presentation can vary as Google updates Docs, but the document must display pages rather than an endless canvas.
  2. Insert the image. Choose Insert > Image, then select Upload from computer, Stock & web, Drive & Photos, Camera, or By URL. Finish with Insert or Open, depending on the source.
  3. Select the image. The image toolbar appears. Choose Behind text for a background or watermark effect, or In front of text when the image should cover part of the text or sit over it.
  4. Place and size it. Drag the image to the desired location and use the corner handles to resize it. For exact controls, open Image options > All image options.

Behind-text placement lets paragraphs remain visible over the image; In-front placement lets the image obscure whatever is underneath it. If the image seems locked to the text line instead of floating, it is still using an inline or wrapping layout, so choose the desired floating option from the toolbar.

How do I wrap text around an image or create a break?

Choose Wrap text when paragraphs should flow around the image, or Break text when the image should occupy a horizontal band with text above and below it. Both are floating layouts and, like front- and behind-text placement, require Pages mode.

  1. Click the inserted image.
  2. On the image toolbar, select Wrap text or Break text.
  3. Choose the spacing or margin control if you need more room between the image and the paragraph.
  4. Set the image’s anchoring behavior to Move with text or Fix position on page.

Move with text keeps the image tied to the nearby paragraph. If that paragraph moves to another page, the image follows its anchor. Fix position on page keeps the image at a page location while you edit surrounding text, which is useful for a logo, callout, or watermark that should not drift as paragraphs change.

How do I put one image over another existing image?

For reliable image-to-image stacking, use an embedded Drawing rather than trying to manage several independent body images. The drawing gives each image its own object layer and provides an Order command for the stack.

  1. Place the cursor where the composition should appear.
  2. Choose Insert > Drawing > New. A drawing canvas opens inside Docs.
  3. In the drawing toolbar, click the Image tool and add the first image. Repeat for every image you need. You can use the available image sources in the drawing interface.
  4. Drag each image into position. Resize from a blue corner handle; use the outside blue rotation handle to turn an image.
  5. Click an image that should move behind another. Choose Actions > Order, then select the appropriate command, such as sending it backward or bringing another object forward.
  6. When the arrangement is ready, click Save and close. The composition returns to the document as one inserted drawing object.

The Order workflow is a practical procedure reported by a Google Docs Editors Community Product Expert. Google’s official help documents the drawing canvas and image manipulation, while the community guidance supplies the specific Order and Group sequence. Menu names can change, so if an item is not visible, select an object first and reopen Actions.

How do I group images so they move together?

Group the images inside the Drawing canvas. Docs does not provide a documented Group command for separate images sitting directly in the body of a document; selecting and grouping objects in a drawing is the dependable method.

  1. Open a drawing with the images already inserted, or create one with Insert > Drawing > New.
  2. Arrange and layer the images before grouping. Grouping changes selection behavior, not the visual order you established.
  3. Multi-select the images. Drag a selection box around them, or select objects one at a time using the canvas’s multi-selection behavior.
  4. Choose Actions > Group. The selected images become one grouped object.
  5. Drag the grouped object to move the complete composition. Resize it from a corner to preserve the arrangement, or rotate it with the rotation handle.
  6. Click Save and close to place the grouped composition in the document.

Grouping is especially useful for a collage, a game map assembled from screenshots, a diagram with labels, or a title graphic made from several visual elements. It prevents one image from being left behind when you reposition the layout.

How do I control which image is on top?

Set stacking order in the drawing, one object at a time. The object brought forward appears above objects beneath it; an object sent backward can sit behind the rest of the composition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Double-click the inserted drawing in the document to reopen its canvas.
  2. Select the image whose layer you want to change.
  3. Open Actions > Order.
  4. Choose the needed direction: bring the image forward, bring it to the front, send it backward, or send it to the back.
  5. Repeat until the visual stack is correct, then save and close.

Think of the order as a stack from back to front. A background screenshot belongs at the back, a frame or colored panel may sit above it, and labels or icons usually belong at the front. If an image appears to vanish, it may simply be completely covered by an object above it; send the covering object backward to reveal it.

What can Image options change?

Image options > All image options exposes document-level controls for a selected image. Use it when dragging alone is too imprecise or when the image needs tonal adjustments.

  • Size and rotation: enter dimensions or adjust the angle rather than relying only on pointer movement.
  • Text wrapping: switch among inline, wrapping, breaking, front, and behind relationships where the current document mode supports them.
  • Position: choose how the image is anchored and whether it moves with text or stays fixed on the page.
  • Recolor: apply a color treatment without editing the source file.
  • Transparency: reduce opacity for a watermark or a background that should not overpower text.
  • Brightness and contrast: improve legibility or balance an image with nearby elements.

These controls apply to the selected image. For several images that must share a single transformation, group them in a drawing first, then resize or rotate the group.

When should I insert images directly, and when should I use a Drawing?

Choose the simplest method that matches the job. Direct insertion is faster for a single image; a drawing adds setup but supplies object-level composition.

Need Direct image in the document Inserted Drawing composition
One image with text around it Fastest; choose Wrap text or Break text. More setup than necessary.
Image behind or in front of text Supported in Pages mode. Possible while composing the drawing, but not required for a single image.
One image over another image Body-image controls are limited for dependable image-to-image order. Use Actions > Order for explicit stacking.
Several images that move together No documented body-image Group command in the reviewed Help Center. Select the objects and choose Actions > Group.
Precise resizing, rotation, and object composition Basic image options are available. The canvas supports moving, resizing, rotating, and formatting images as shapes.

A useful rule is “text relationship in the document, object relationship in a drawing.” If your requirement includes the words overlap, stack, collage, or move together, start with a drawing.

How do I edit a layered or grouped composition later?

The drawing remains editable after it is inserted. Click the drawing object in the document and choose Edit to reopen the canvas, then select individual images or the group and make changes.

Inside the canvas, you can reposition an image, resize it from a corner handle, rotate it with the outside handle, change its Order, or adjust the selection before saving again. If you need to work on one member of a grouped arrangement, select the group in the canvas and use the available object-selection controls to reach the individual element; avoid rebuilding the entire composition unless the drawing itself has been deleted.

When you finish, click Save and close so the revised drawing replaces the earlier version in the document. A drawing inserted from Drive can also be updated or unlinked through the drawing controls documented by Google.

Why are the layering controls missing?

The first check is document mode. If the file is pageless, Docs hides or disables Behind text, In front of text, text wrapping, and page-position controls. Switch to Pages mode, select the image again, and look for the image toolbar.

  • You are in Pageless mode: change the page setup to Pages before trying to layer or anchor the image.
  • You selected text instead of the image: click the image border so the image toolbar appears.
  • You are editing outside the drawing: overlapping images and Group/Order commands are inside the drawing editor. Double-click the inserted drawing and use its Actions menu.
  • The image is hidden: another object may cover it. Select the covering object and send it backward, or move it temporarily to inspect the stack.
  • The image drifts while typing: choose Move with text for a text-anchored layout or Fix position on page for a page-anchored layout.

Google’s menu labels and availability can change. If a command has moved, select the relevant image or drawing object first; context-sensitive controls are often absent until an object is selected.

Does Google Docs preserve image layering in Microsoft Word files?

Google’s Workspace team announced on May 24, 2021, that Docs could place images in front of or behind text and preserve that formatting when importing or exporting Microsoft Word files. The announcement covered personal Google Accounts and multiple Workspace editions.

That statement concerns front- and behind-text formatting, not every possible drawing behavior or every third-party conversion path. Treat the result as a compatibility feature rather than a guarantee that every complex composition will render identically in all Word versions. For a critical handoff, open the exported file in the target Word environment and verify the visual stack.

Which workflow should I use for common layouts?

Watermark behind paragraphs

Insert the image directly, select Behind text, choose Fix position on page, and reduce transparency in Image options. This keeps the watermark stationary while the document text changes.

Screenshot with explanatory text beside it

Insert the screenshot directly, choose Wrap text, and use Move with text. The screenshot will travel with the paragraph it explains.

Two screenshots with one label over both

Create a drawing, insert both screenshots, set their order, add the label as another drawing object if needed, group the objects, and save. The complete panel can then be moved as one item.

Game-map collage or image grid

Use a drawing from the beginning. Place and resize each image on the canvas, establish the back-to-front order, group the finished set, and insert it only after the arrangement is stable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the practical limits to remember?

Direct body images are convenient but are not a full desktop-publishing layer system. Their controls focus on how an image relates to text, and the reviewed Help Center does not document grouping separate body images. The Drawing canvas supplies the missing object-level workflow, but it adds an extra edit step because you must reopen the drawing to change its contents.

Pages mode is therefore a prerequisite for floating and layered body images. Pageless mode can still be useful for flowing text, but it is the wrong mode when you need page-anchored placement, front/behind text, or wrapping controls. Decide the document mode before arranging a large set of images so you do not have to redo the layout.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a watermark readable without washing out the text?

Place the image Behind text, choose Fix position on page, and lower its transparency in Image options. Adjust brightness and contrast as needed until the text remains clear over the image.

Can I reopen a grouped drawing without starting over?

Yes. Select the inserted drawing in the document and choose Edit to reopen its canvas. If the drawing is linked from Drive, Google’s controls also provide options to update the link or unlink the drawing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my image move to a different paragraph after I edit the document?

A floating image set to Move with text follows its anchor when that text shifts. Select Fix position on page when the image must remain at a particular page location instead.

Will every Word export preserve a complex image collage exactly?

Google specifically announced preservation for images placed in front of or behind text during Word import and export. That does not establish identical rendering for every grouped drawing or every Word version, so inspect a critical export in the target application.
