To let a friend join a Minecraft world across PC and console, both players generally need Bedrock Edition, current game versions, and online accounts with multiplayer allowed. Start the host’s world with multiplayer enabled, then invite the friend—or have them open Play → Friends and select the host under Joinable Friends. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition cannot directly join each other’s games.
First, check that your editions are compatible
For the straightforward PC-to-console route, both players must be using Bedrock Edition. Bedrock supports play across compatible devices, including consoles; Java Edition uses different servers and cannot directly join a Bedrock world. On PC, check which edition is installed before changing settings or troubleshooting. Minecraft’s edition comparison explains the distinction, and its multiplayer requirements specify that players need the same edition as the hosted game.

Allow multiplayer and invite friends from a Bedrock world
- Open the world settings. Start Minecraft and select Play. Find the world, open its pencil or edit control, then go to Multiplayer.
- Enable multiplayer. Turn on Multiplayer Game. If everyone is playing on the same local network, also turn on Visible to LAN Players.
- Start the world. The host needs to be in the world for friends to join this way.
- Send an invitation. Open the in-game menu and choose Invite to Game. Select the friends to invite and send the invitations. If a friend is missing from the list, the official invite guide says you can add them by gamertag.
Button placement and labels can vary by platform or game version. If the menus look different, use the corresponding world-edit, multiplayer, or social invite control. See Minecraft’s guide to playing with others for the invite flow.
How your friend joins
- Both players should be online and friends in Minecraft.
- The friend selects Play, then opens the Friends tab.
- Under Joinable Friends, they select the host’s gamertag.
Only online friends appear in that list, and the host’s world must already be running. The host can also send an invitation instead. Follow Minecraft Help’s Bedrock world joining instructions if the friend cannot find the session.

Choose the right way to play together
| Option | Best for | What it requires |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Bedrock invite or join | Playing in the host’s current world | Friends online; compatible Bedrock versions; host has started the world with multiplayer enabled; account permissions allow multiplayer. |
| Bedrock LAN | Players on the same local network | Compatible devices on one network; host enables Multiplayer Game and Visible to LAN Players. Other players open Play → Worlds and select the LAN-marked world. |
| Realms | Friends who need access while the owner is offline | Minecraft’s hosted service; cross-play still depends on matching editions. Service details may change. |
For LAN setup, use Minecraft Help’s Bedrock LAN guide. A console may still require its platform’s online multiplayer subscription, even when players are on the same network. Minecraft Realms is the alternative when friends need the world available while the owner is offline.
Accounts, permissions, and console subscriptions
Console and mobile players need to be signed in with a Microsoft account for the described online multiplayer flow. PlayStation players need a Microsoft account linked to their PSN account for cross-platform play. Minecraft Help’s PlayStation account-linking instructions describe signing in from Minecraft and completing the link with the displayed code; one Microsoft account can be linked to a PSN account at a time.

Consoles also require the applicable online multiplayer service. Minecraft Help names Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online; check the current requirements for your platform and region, as they can change. Child-account privacy settings may block multiplayer, so check the account’s multiplayer permissions if the game settings look correct but joining remains disabled.

- Confirm the editions match. For PC-to-console play, make sure both are using Bedrock. A Java player cannot directly join a Bedrock world.
- Check the host’s session. The host must be online, have started the intended world, and have Multiplayer Game enabled. For LAN, also confirm Visible to LAN Players is on.
- Check friend status and presence. Confirm both players are friends in Minecraft and online. The host can try inviting the friend again or adding them by gamertag.
- Check sign-in and permissions. Make sure the required account is signed in, any PlayStation-to-Microsoft link is complete, and multiplayer privacy settings permit play.
- Update both games. Minecraft support recommends using the newest release. If connection errors persist, check that neither player is on a preview or snapshot version.
- Check subscriptions and connection. Confirm the console’s online multiplayer subscription is active where required, then check internet access—or the shared local network for LAN play. Custom DNS or port settings can conflict with Minecraft; do not change router settings broadly without a specific symptom and platform guidance.
