Steam has separate controls for bandwidth and disk space. Set a client-wide cap at Steam > Settings > Downloads, delay a demo’s updates from its Properties > Updates page, and move an installed demo through Properties > Installed Files > Move Install Folder. Steam does not provide a per-demo gigabyte quota, so the install dialog is the authority for each title’s size. If another computer or Steam Deck on your home network already has the files, Local Network Game Transfers can avoid downloading those files from the internet.
Choose the control that matches the problem
Download speed and storage consumption are related but different. A bandwidth cap changes how quickly Steam transfers data; it does not make the installed files smaller. Moving a demo changes which drive stores it; it does not reduce the demo’s size. Update settings determine when Steam fetches patches, while Local Network Game Transfers can replace an internet transfer with a local copy when eligible files already exist on another device.

| Goal | Steam control | What changes | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep a demo from taking all available internet capacity | Steam > Settings > Downloads > Limit Download Speed | Steam’s download and update rate is capped for the client | Downloads and updates take longer |
| Prevent automatic downloads at busy times | Download schedule or per-game update policy | Transfers wait for the permitted window or launch | A launch may require an update before the demo starts |
| Keep the system SSD from filling | Steam Library folders and Move Install Folder | Installation files are stored on another drive | The destination drive must have enough capacity and an acceptable access speed |
| Avoid repeating an internet download on a second computer | Local Network Game Transfers | Existing installation and update files are copied over the home LAN first | Both clients must be online and allowed to transfer; some file types are excluded |
| Recover all space from a demo you no longer use | Steam’s uninstall command in the demo’s Library management menu | The installed demo payload is removed | Reinstalling later requires the files again |
Set a Steam download-speed limit
Steam’s bandwidth limit is configured for the Steam client rather than for one individual demo. It is the appropriate control when a demo download, patch, or several queued transfers are competing with video calls, games, or other household traffic.

Configure the cap
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Choose Steam > Settings.
- Open Downloads.
- Find Limit Download Speed, enable the limit, and choose the value from the dropdown.
- Leave the settings page and watch the transfer in Steam’s Download Manager to confirm that the chosen limit is being applied.
Steam Support describes this control as a way to limit the bandwidth Steam uses while updating and downloading games. Because the setting belongs to the client, it affects the client’s downloads and updates rather than creating a separate quota for one demo.

Read the units correctly
Internet packages are commonly advertised in bits per second, such as megabits per second (Mb/s). Steam download rates are measured in bytes per second, using units such as KB/s or MB/s. One byte is eight bits. Steam’s own example equates 768 KB/s with 6144 Kb/s, or 6 megabits per second. The letters matter: an uppercase B means bytes, while a lowercase b means bits.
Before selecting a cap, compare the unit displayed in Steam with the unit in your internet plan. A value that looks small in KB/s may still represent a substantial portion of a connection stated in Mb/s, and choosing a number without checking the unit can produce a much lower or higher cap than intended.
Watch and prioritize transfers
Steam’s Downloads page also shows active transfers, lets you reorder the queue, and provides scheduling controls. If a demo is sharing the queue with a large game update, moving the demo ahead can make it available sooner without raising the speed cap. Moving it back can preserve capacity for a game you need immediately.

A speed limit controls rate; a schedule controls timing. On the Downloads page, Steam can restrict automatic updates to a local-time window. A window such as midnight to 8 AM allows Steam to update overnight instead of during working or playing hours.

Use the global download schedule
- Go to Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Set the automatic-update time window to the hours that suit your connection and storage routine, such as midnight through 8 AM.
- Keep the Download Manager available when you want to check whether a queued update is waiting or has been deferred.
The schedule is not an absolute lock. Steam lets you override it from Download Manager, and launching a game can force an update. Treat the window as a default policy, not a guarantee that a title can never download outside it.
Delay updates for one demo
- Open the demo’s page in your Steam Library.
- Choose Manage > Properties.
- Open Updates.
- Select Only update this game when I launch it if you want to defer automatic updates for that demo.
The same menu offers Always keep this game updated and a high-priority option. Use the first when the demo should remain current without manual intervention, or the high-priority choice when it should be handled before lower-priority items in the queue. Choosing update-on-launch saves background bandwidth, but the demo may need to download and install its update at the moment you try to play.
Keep a demo off a crowded SSD
Steam does not document a setting that limits one demo to a chosen number of gigabytes. Demo size depends on the title and its particular build, so read the exact size shown in the installation dialog rather than relying on a universal estimate. Steam also does not publish an aggregate statistic for demo sizes.

Account for more than the initial download
The base demo payload is only one possible source of storage use. Steam identifies automatic patches and updates, saved-game files, and multiplayer custom-content downloads as additional causes of declining free space. A demo that fit comfortably on installation day can therefore require more room later, even if its original download appeared small.

- Check the install dialog for the demo’s current required space.
- Leave practical headroom for patches and updates.
- Remember that saves and multiplayer custom content can consume space separately from the main payload.
- Check the Steam storage view when free space falls unexpectedly instead of assuming the demo itself changed size.
Create or select another Steam Library folder
- Open Steam > Settings.
- Choose Storage.
- Create a Steam Library folder on another available drive, or select an existing library folder.
- When installing a demo, choose that library as the destination.
Steam says Library folders can span multiple hard drives. This lets a smaller system SSD hold the operating system and frequently used software while demos reside on a larger internal drive or a portable external SSD for a Steam library. The appropriate drive depends on the demo’s size, the free capacity you have, and the access speed you require; Steam does not prescribe a universal capacity or speed.
Move an installed demo without downloading it again
- Open the demo’s Library page.
- Choose Manage > Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Move Install Folder.
- Choose the Steam Library folder on the destination drive and confirm the move.
This relocates the existing installation rather than requiring a fresh download. Moving the folder changes where the files are stored; it does not reduce the demo’s required space. If the destination does not have enough room for the current installation and future updates, the storage problem will return on that drive.
Use Local Network Game Transfers to avoid a second internet download
When another PC or Steam Deck on the same home LAN already contains the needed game files, Steam can copy existing installation and update files locally before falling back to Steam content servers. This is useful when a demo is already installed on one device and you want it on another without consuming the household internet connection again.
What must be true
- Both Steam clients must be online.
- Both clients must be permitted to transfer over the local network.
- The source device must already have the relevant installation or update files.
- The destination must have a suitable Steam Library folder and enough free space.
When those conditions are met, Steam checks for eligible local files and uses the LAN before retrieving missing data from the internet. Keep the source device available until the transfer finishes. If Steam cannot find a usable local copy, it falls back to Steam’s content servers.

Files that are not covered
Steam’s Local Network Game Transfers do not include Workshop files, Steam Cloud files, or shader files. Those categories may still be transferred through their normal mechanisms even when the main installation and update files are copied locally. A LAN transfer therefore reduces internet use for eligible game data, but it is not a complete replacement for every download associated with a demo.
Compare the practical approaches
| Approach | Bandwidth effect | Storage effect | Best use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Download-speed cap | Restricts Steam’s transfer rate | None | Keep Steam from saturating an internet connection | Longer download and update times |
| Automatic-update schedule | Defers transfers outside the chosen local-time window | Can postpone patch-related growth | Keep updates away from work, streaming, or play sessions | Overrides and game launches can still trigger updates |
| Per-demo update-on-launch | Stops routine background updates for that demo | Reduces unplanned patch downloads, but does not cap installed size | A demo played occasionally | Launching may require an immediate update |
| Move Install Folder | Does not change download traffic | Moves the installation to another drive | A nearly full system SSD | Destination capacity and drive performance still matter |
| Local Network Game Transfers | Replaces eligible internet transfers with LAN copies | Requires space on the destination device | Installing the same demo on multiple home devices | Workshop, Cloud, and shader files are excluded |
| Uninstall | Removes future update downloads until reinstall | Reclaims the installed demo’s space | A demo you no longer need installed | Playing again requires downloading it |
Troubleshoot common surprises
The cap seems much slower than expected
Check whether Steam is displaying bytes per second while your plan is expressed in bits per second. Recalculate using the eight-to-one relationship before changing the dropdown value. Also check whether several transfers are sharing the capped client; the limit governs Steam’s use of the connection, not a separate full-speed allowance for every item in the queue.
An update starts outside the schedule
Look in Download Manager for a manual override, and check whether you launched the demo. Steam permits users to override the scheduled window, and launching a game can force an update. For a demo that should not update in the background, set its individual policy to Only update this game when I launch it.

Verify that the move completed to the intended Library folder, then inspect Steam’s storage view. Automatic patches, saved-game files, and multiplayer custom content are separate sources of growth identified by Steam. Moving the base installation does not move the underlying need for update and save space; it only changes the drive that bears it.

A second computer still downloads from the internet
Confirm that both clients are online, on the same home LAN, and permitted to use Local Network Game Transfers. The source device must contain the required files, and Steam may still download portions that are missing or excluded. Workshop, Cloud, and shader files are not part of the local-transfer set, so internet activity for those files is expected.
There is no room on any preferred drive
Use the demo’s installation dialog to determine its current requirement, then choose a Library folder on a drive with enough free capacity. If the demo is no longer needed, uninstalling it is the only option that removes its installed payload rather than relocating it. Do not infer a safe size from another demo: builds and titles differ.
A practical setup for limited bandwidth and storage
- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads and set a cap whose byte-per-second unit matches your connection plan.
- Set an overnight automatic-update window, such as midnight to 8 AM, if daytime transfers interfere with other use.
- For demos that you play rarely, open Manage > Properties > Updates and choose update-on-launch.
- Open Steam > Settings > Storage and add a Library folder on a roomier drive.
- Move existing demos through Properties > Installed Files > Move Install Folder instead of downloading them again.
- If another household device already has the files, leave both clients online and permitted for Local Network Game Transfers so Steam can attempt a LAN copy first.
- When free space continues to decline, check updates, saves, and multiplayer custom content rather than looking only at the original demo download.
This combination separates the decisions: the download cap protects the connection, scheduling controls when transfers happen, library management determines which drive stores the files, and local transfers reduce repeated internet downloads. Steam’s controls do not provide a per-demo gigabyte ceiling, so the title-specific install dialog and the Storage view remain the reliable way to plan capacity.
