How to Lock Down Mature Games and In-Game Spending on PS5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch

The reliable way to stop a child opening mature games or buying digital items is to use four layers: a separate child account with the correct birthdate, an age-rating restriction, a spending control, and a passcode-protected adult profile. PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch include these controls at no extra cost. Set the console lock and the platform-account spending restriction together; either one by itself leaves a common workaround.

What should I set before anything else?

Start with the account structure, then apply content and spending rules. A shared adult profile, an incorrect birthdate, or an unprotected second user can defeat otherwise correct settings.

  1. Create or use a child account with the real birthdate. On PlayStation and Xbox, controls are attached to that child account. On Nintendo, add the child’s Nintendo Account to the Family Group and link it to the Switch user profile. A wrong birthdate changes which age band the platform offers.
  2. Keep an adult family-manager, organizer, or parent account separate. Put a password or PIN on every adult user and do not save that credential where the child can read it.
  3. Set the age-rating ceiling. Use the platform’s ESRB-based filter so games above the child’s permitted rating cannot launch or install on the child profile.
  4. Set the spending lock. Use PlayStation’s monthly limit of 0, Xbox approval requests, or Nintendo’s eShop spending restriction. Remove saved cards from every profile the child can open.
  5. Close game-specific and stored-value loopholes. Configure Fortnite or Roblox separately, protect the Nintendo console PIN, and check for gift-card or wallet balances on Xbox and Nintendo accounts.

How do I block mature games and purchases on PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4?

Create a PlayStation family and add the child before changing restrictions. The settings follow the child’s account across PlayStation consoles; if you change a rule while a game is open, the child must sign out and sign back in before it takes effect.

Set the PlayStation family and open the child’s controls

  • PS5: Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > select the child.
  • Web: Sign in to Account Management > Family Management > select the child > Edit.
  • Phone: Use the free PlayStation Family app. Sony lists iOS 14 and Android 8 as its minimum operating-system versions.

Sony’s setup requirement is explicit: “Before setting parental controls, you need to create a family and add your child as a family member.”

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Block games rated above the child’s age

In Family Management, open the child’s parental controls and choose the restriction level or customize individual settings. PS5 presets such as Late Teens or Older and Early Teens are age-based; changing one individual toggle converts the preset to Customize. The PS5 games-and-apps filter allows content whose rating is the same as or lower than the child’s age.

That matches the ESRB example: “if your child is 12, games rated T for Teen, M for Mature 17+, and AO for Adults Only 18+ will be blocked.” In the United States and Canada, ESRB is the rating authority used for this age filtering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a tighter setup, also review:

  • Age Level for Games on PS5, PS4, and PS3.
  • Age Filtering for Online Content, where that option is available in your country or region.
  • Blu-ray/DVD age level, if the console plays discs.
  • Use of PlayStation VR / VR2. Sony says PlayStation VR and PlayStation VR2 are not for use by children under 12.

Handle an exception without removing the filter

If a restricted game is selected, PlayStation blocks it and presents a request option. The child can ask for an exception; the family manager or an appointed parent or guardian receives a notification and email. Approve or reject the title in the PlayStation Family app, on the web, or on PS5 under Allowed Games. An exception applies to that approved title rather than opening the entire rating band.

Restrict chat and user-generated content while you are there

Under Communication and User-Generated Content, choose Restrict to disable text and voice chat with other players, sharing the child’s own user-generated content, viewing other players’ user-generated content, and some linked third-party communication apps. Pre-written in-game messages can still be allowed, and a child can request a per-game communication exception.

Keep the parent or guardian as the only party allowed to change Privacy Settings, and enable the option that prevents the child from changing parental controls on the console.

How do I set the PlayStation monthly spending limit to zero?

PlayStation child purchases are charged to the Family Manager’s wallet, not to a payment card the child adds. Sony says the default monthly spending limit is 0; leaving it at 0 blocks child-account PlayStation Store purchases, including add-ons billed through that store.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On PS5, go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > select the child.
  2. Open Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit.
  3. Leave the value at 0 to block spending, or enter a specific monthly amount if you intentionally provide an allowance.
  4. On PS4, use Applications/Devices/Network Features > Monthly Spending Limit.
  5. Check which adults are appointed as guardians. Those adults may be able to change the limit, so agree on one household rule.

Apply the limit to every child account, and remove stored payment methods from adult profiles the child can access. The PlayStation limit covers purchases processed through PlayStation Store; it is not a universal switch for every game’s separate wallet.

How do I block mature games on Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One?

Xbox uses Microsoft family tools for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and the child’s Microsoft account on Windows 10 or 11. The Xbox Family Settings app, the Microsoft Family Safety website, and the console expose the same family policy.

Use the Xbox Family Settings app

  1. Open the Xbox Family Settings app and select the child under Your Family.
  2. Choose Content Restrictions.
  3. Turn Filter Inappropriate Content on.
  4. Choose Allow Content Suitable for Age and confirm the child’s age.

Parents can additionally block or allow individual games regardless of their rating. Only the family organizer can change these safety settings.

Use the console or Microsoft Family website

On the console, use Settings > Privacy and online safety > select the family member > Content restrictions and choose the numeric age scale aligned with ESRB ratings. On the Microsoft Family website, open More options for the child, choose Content restrictions, then turn on Block inappropriate apps, games & media and select Allow apps and games rated for [age]. The allowed-ratings view shows the resulting band.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The ESRB’s examples make the cutoff clear: an age of 9 allows E (Everyone), while an age of 11 allows E and E10+ but not T or M. Those are rating examples, not a guarantee that every title has identical content.

How do I turn on Ask to Buy on Xbox?

Ask to Buy requires adult approval for a purchase request, but it is not a complete block when the child already has gift-card credit or other funds in the Microsoft account.

  1. Open the child’s profile in Microsoft Family. You can use the family page at account.microsoft.com/family.
  2. Select Content restrictions.
  3. Turn on Needs adult approval to buy things.
  4. Approve or deny requests from the email notification or from the family account page.

The console path in the ESRB Xbox guide is adult account > Xbox button > System > Settings > Account > Family > child’s account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox Network privacy > View details & customize > Buy & download. Turn the purchase control on and set the available limit.

Important stored-value exception: children can still make purchases with gift cards and funds a parent has already put into the account. The account holder receives an email whenever a purchase is made through Xbox Store. For a hard stop, do not leave a balance available; use approval with no stored funds and keep payment methods on the adult account.

How do I block mature games on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2?

Nintendo requires two different controls: a console Parental Controls PIN for software and communication, and a Nintendo Account Family Group restriction for eShop spending. The software PIN is console-wide, not per child, so every user on that Switch shares the same age ceiling.

Set the Nintendo software restriction

The Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app is the most flexible route and is required for some Switch 2 GameChat cases involving children under 16 and supervised accounts.

  1. Open the app and tap Parental Controls > Restricted Features.
  2. Choose a restriction level: Teen, Pre-Teen, Child, or Custom. Labels can vary slightly by console or app version.
  3. For Switch 2, Teen permits E, E10+, and T titles; Mature is outside that band.
  4. Use Custom or Restricted Software when you need a specific ceiling. In the United States and Canada, the Nintendo Account’s default rating authority is ESRB.
  5. Set a console PIN that the child does not know.

Without a phone, use System Settings > Parental Controls > No Smart Device Available > Restriction Level, then save the PIN. On the original Switch, the path is System Settings > Parental Controls > Parental Controls Settings > Use This Console > Restriction Level.

On the original Switch, the Teen band blocks Nintendo 17+ / ESRB Mature content; Pre-Teen also blocks Teen, and Child is stricter. Because the PIN governs the whole console, siblings cannot have different software ceilings on the same Switch.

Restrict Nintendo eShop and in-game eShop spending

  1. Sign in with the parent Nintendo Account and open the Family Group.
  2. Select the child account and choose Spending Restrictions.
  3. Check Restrict purchases of Nintendo eShop products, etc. and save.
  4. Confirm that the row shows Restricted.

You can reach the same Nintendo Account page from the Switch Parental Controls app through Restricted Features > Spending Restrictions. Nintendo says that, after the box is checked, children need parent permission to purchase new games and in-game content through Nintendo eShop; the account holder receives an email on eShop purchases.

Link the child’s Nintendo Account to the correct Switch user profile or the restriction will not attach to that user. Nintendo has no monthly dollar cap: spending is an on/off restriction plus whatever funds are available. Gift-card funds can therefore remain a risk, especially on unsupervised teen accounts.

Why can my child still buy things inside Fortnite or Roblox?

Console-store controls cover charges processed by PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, or Nintendo eShop. A game’s own account, wallet, or parental gate can sit alongside those controls, so configure both layers.

Fortnite

ESRB states: “For example, Fortnite’s Cabined Accounts automatically block voice chat and real-money purchases until you provide consent.” Keep the console spending lock enabled anyway, because a linked account, stored balance, or another profile can create a separate route to checkout. Review the game account’s parent-consent prompt and approve only what you intend.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roblox

Roblox has its own parent tools for chat, age settings, and Robux spending. Sony states: “No. Communications in Roblox are independent from the parental control settings you have selected for your PS4 or PS5 console.” A PlayStation chat restriction therefore does not replace Roblox’s communication controls, and a console spending rule should be paired with Roblox’s own purchase settings.

What workarounds should I check when a lock fails?

  • Adult profile: The child is playing on an adult user with a saved card. Add a passcode to every adult profile and sign out when finished.
  • Unprotected new user: A new local PlayStation or Xbox user has no family policy. Require a passcode for user creation or profile switching where the console offers that option.
  • Gift cards and balances: Xbox approval does not stop purchases from existing funds. Nintendo also has no monthly cap; remove or avoid balances you do not want spent.
  • Nintendo PIN sharing: One PIN controls the whole Switch. Change it immediately if the child has learned it.
  • Unlinked Nintendo Account: The eShop restriction only follows the Nintendo Account linked to the Switch user.
  • Wrong birthdate: Rating filters follow the date entered on the account, not the child’s actual age unless you correct it through the platform’s account process.
  • PlayStation session still active: Have the child sign out and back in after any parental-control change.
  • Separate game wallet: Check Fortnite, Roblox, and any other title that stores payment details or currency outside the console store.

What else should I configure on Switch 2?

GameChat, Play-Time Limit, and Bedtime are useful safety or routine tools, but they do not replace an age filter or spending restriction. For children under 16 and supervised accounts, GameChat can require the Parental Controls app, per-friend approval, and parent permission for video chat sessions. “Suspend Play When Time’s Up” is optional; without it, the console notifies the player but does not power off.

How do I verify that the setup is actually locked?

  1. Sign in as the child and confirm that a game above the selected rating cannot launch.
  2. Open the console store and verify that a purchase request, blocked checkout, or parent-permission prompt appears before payment.
  3. Check every local user and remove saved cards from any adult profile the child can reach.
  4. Review the child account’s balance, gift-card credit, and in-game currencies.
  5. On Nintendo, confirm the account shows Restricted in Spending Restrictions and that the PIN is unknown to the child.
  6. On PlayStation, sign out and back in after changing a rule, then test again.
  7. Check the game’s own parent dashboard for Fortnite, Roblox, and any title with a separate wallet or chat system.

How were these controls chosen?

The setup follows the failure points documented for the three platforms: account identity and birthdate, ESRB age filtering, platform-store spending, and separate game or stored-value systems. It prioritizes controls that are free, available on the console or official companion app, and capable of blocking either content or payment before a child reaches checkout.

Frequently asked questions

Can a child request access to one blocked PlayStation game without changing the whole age setting?

Yes. PlayStation presents a request option when a restricted game is blocked. A family manager or appointed parent can approve that title through Allowed Games, the PlayStation Family app, the web, or the PS5, while the broader age filter remains in place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Xbox Ask to Buy stop a child from using a prepaid code?

No. Microsoft’s Xbox guidance says children can still purchase with gift cards and funds already added to the account. Treat stored credit as spendable cash and do not leave a balance when approval is meant to be a hard stop.

Can siblings have different game-age limits on one Nintendo Switch?

Not for software restrictions. The Nintendo Parental Controls PIN applies to the entire associated console, so every user shares the same software ceiling. Nintendo eShop spending restrictions are handled through individual Nintendo Accounts in the Family Group.

Why does a PlayStation chat restriction not stop Roblox messages?

Sony says Roblox communications are independent of the PS4 and PS5 parental-control settings. Configure communication and spending inside Roblox as well as on the console.

Are play-time limits enough to stop purchases?

No. Play-time and bedtime settings control when a child can use the console, not whether a store transaction is authorized. Keep the age-rating control and spending restriction enabled even when schedules are in use.
