Enter either the account username or the email address attached to the account, then enter the case-sensitive password. If the credentials are correct but you see a 404, a cookie warning, a redirect loop, or the login form again, use the least-invasive fix that matches the symptom below.

The two standard WordPress login addresses
/wp-login.php: the direct login form
WordPress’s official Developer Resources handbook identifies wp-login.php in the site’s root directory as the login page. In a normal HTTPS setup, the complete address is:
https://your-domain.example/wp-login.php
Use the domain visitors normally use, including the correct subdomain if the site runs at one. If HTTPS is enabled, use https rather than http. Do not copy a trailing space into the address bar.

/wp-admin/: the dashboard gateway
The dashboard address is:
https://your-domain.example/wp-admin/
A logged-in user normally reaches the administration area there. A logged-out visitor is sent to the login form, so a redirect from /wp-admin/ to /wp-login.php is expected behavior, not evidence that the dashboard is missing.
What to enter on the form
- Use the WordPress username or the email address associated with the account.
- Passwords are case-sensitive. Check capitalization, punctuation, and accidental spaces introduced by copying.
- If the account email is accessible and the site can deliver mail, select Lost your password? and follow the normal email reset process.
A password-reset message cannot help if you no longer control the account email or if the site’s mail delivery is failing. In those cases, an administrator or hosting provider may need to restore access.
Identify the failure before changing anything
Different symptoms point to different recovery paths. Start with the smallest change that can test the likely cause.

Normal login: a precise checklist
- Confirm the domain. Compare the address with the domain you use for the public site. A staging site, a different subdomain, or an old domain can have separate users and passwords.
- Open the direct endpoint. Append
/wp-login.phpto the site’s canonical domain. If the site is configured for HTTPS, keep the entire request on HTTPS. - Type the identifier manually. Try the username first, then the account email address. Remove any leading or trailing spaces.
- Type the password carefully. Check case, keyboard layout, and accidental auto-fill from another site. Do not assume a browser-saved password is current.
- Submit once and observe the result. A dashboard, a clear credential error, a repeated form, a cookie warning, or a 404 each requires a different branch below.
- Use the reset link only when appropriate. The email reset flow requires access to the account email and functioning mail delivery from the site.
Fix a username or password rejection
Recheck the account identifier
WordPress accepts the account username or its associated email address. An email address that forwards to your inbox is not necessarily the address stored on the WordPress account, so try the exact account address if you know it. Check for copied whitespace and for a domain typo before changing any settings.

Use the built-in reset flow
- Open the normal login form.
- Select Lost your password?.
- Submit the username or account email requested by the form.
- Follow the reset message delivered to that account.
- Return to
/wp-login.phpand sign in with the new password.
If no message arrives, check whether the address is correct and whether the site can send mail. Repeatedly submitting the form will not repair a mail-delivery problem. If you cannot access the mailbox, contact another site administrator or the hosting provider rather than attempting destructive file or database changes.
When WordPress says cookies are blocked
WordPress authentication depends on cookies. The browser must be able to write the site’s test cookie and the authentication cookies created during login. If those cookies are rejected, the form may report that cookies are blocked or may simply return you to the login screen.
Browser-side repair
- Enable cookies for the site in the browser’s privacy or site-permission settings.
- Clear the cookies for the affected site, then clear its cached data if the browser offers separate controls.
- Close and reopen the login page.
- Retry in a private window.
- If the private-window test fails, try a second browser. This distinguishes a browser profile problem from a site-wide configuration problem.
Clear only the affected site’s data first when possible. Clearing every site’s cookies signs you out elsewhere and does not provide extra diagnostic value for this WordPress login.
Interpret the result
- If private browsing works, the original browser profile likely has a stale cookie, cache entry, extension, or site-permission conflict.
- If every browser fails, investigate HTTPS, URL, proxy, plugin, firewall, or hosting causes rather than repeatedly deleting browser data.
- If the site shows a cookie warning immediately, make sure the address used for the test is the same canonical domain and protocol that the site expects.
Stop repeated login screens and redirect loops
A repeated login form usually means the browser did not retain the authentication cookie, or WordPress and the server disagree about the site’s canonical URL. A visible redirect loop can have the same underlying cause.

Check the URL pair
WordPress uses a home URL and a site URL. Conflicts can occur when WP_HOME or WP_SITEURL in wp-config.php differs from the home and siteurl values stored in the database. Differences in http versus https, a www subdomain, or another hostname can make each request appear to come from a different site.
- Choose the single domain and protocol visitors should use.
- Check whether
WP_HOMEandWP_SITEURLare forcing different values. - Check the database’s
homeandsiteurlvalues for the same consistency. - Check proxy, CDN, and server redirect rules for an HTTP-to-HTTPS or hostname cycle.
During troubleshooting, the WordPress handbook documents forcing the expected URLs in wp-config.php. Make a backup before any database search-and-replace operation; a broad replacement can alter serialized data or links beyond the login problem.

Use a private window after correcting a URL or redirect rule so old cookies do not obscure the result. If the login succeeds there, close the private window and clear the affected site’s old cookies in the regular browser before testing again.
Fix a 404 on the login page
Consider a hidden-login security plugin
Some security plugins intentionally replace the standard login slug. When such a plugin is active, both /wp-login.php and a logged-out request to /wp-admin/ may return a 404 by design. That response does not prove that WordPress files are missing.

Use the custom login slug configured by the plugin. Check the site owner’s documentation, setup notes, or administrator records for that address. Avoid guessing many URLs, because repeated failed requests can trigger additional security controls.
If the custom address is unknown
Ask a user who still has dashboard access to confirm the configured slug. If nobody can reach the dashboard, use the host’s file manager or SFTP/FTP access to identify the active security plugin and consult its configuration or support documentation. Preserve a backup and do not delete the plugin or its files merely to make a URL respond.

Isolate plugin and theme conflicts safely
A plugin or theme can interfere with authentication, redirects, cookies, or the login form itself. Isolation is appropriate only when you have a recovery path through the host and can restore the original names.
Temporarily disable plugins without deleting them
- Create or confirm a current backup.
- Open the host’s file manager or connect through SFTP/FTP.
- Locate the WordPress plugins directory.
- Rename that directory temporarily, rather than deleting it. This prevents WordPress from loading the plugins while preserving the files.
- Test the login.
- If access returns, restore the directory name and reactivate plugins one at a time, testing after each activation until the conflicting plugin is identified.
The exact directory name and file location can vary with the host’s layout, so use the site’s document root shown by the host. If you are unsure which folder is the live site, stop and ask the host rather than renaming files in another installation.

Test the active theme
A support example for WordPress troubleshooting also uses the same reversible method for a theme: rename the active theme’s directory temporarily through file access, then test the login. Preserve the original name so it can be restored. If the login works with the theme unavailable, restore it and investigate the theme’s authentication, redirect, or customization code before reactivating it for visitors.
Check firewalls, WAFs, CDNs, caches, and hosting rules
When browser fixes and reversible plugin tests do not help, a request may be blocked or rewritten before WordPress can process it. Possible control points include a firewall, web application firewall, content-delivery network, server cache, or host-level rule.
- Look for a block page, timeout, unusual status code, or redirect to a different hostname.
- Temporarily review cache and redirect rules for the login path, without disabling protections broadly for longer than necessary.
- Ask the host whether a security rule is blocking POST requests to the login endpoint or preventing authentication cookies from being set.
- Provide the exact URL, time of the failure, browser and operating system, WordPress and PHP details, database details, and server or proxy arrangement.
Hosting or WordPress support is the appropriate next step when the fix requires server, firewall, database, proxy, or file access that you do not control. Include what you already tested so support can avoid repeating browser-only advice.
Choose the least-invasive recovery path

What not to do while troubleshooting
- Do not delete the plugins or theme directory when a temporary rename can provide the same test.
- Do not perform a database search-and-replace without a backup and a clear understanding of the affected domain values.
- Do not assume a 404 always means a missing WordPress file; a hidden-login configuration can produce it intentionally.
- Do not keep changing passwords when the visible symptom is a cookie failure or redirect loop.
- Do not disable every firewall or proxy control permanently. Identify the rule affecting the login request and restore normal protection after testing.
When to ask for help
Escalate when you lack the account email, cannot reach the host’s file or database tools, see a server error or timeout, or have conflicting URL settings you cannot safely change. Send support the canonical domain, the exact login URL, the symptom, the time it occurred, whether another browser behaved differently, and the relevant WordPress, PHP, database, browser, operating-system, proxy, and server details. That information lets support distinguish credentials, cookies, redirects, hidden-login settings, application conflicts, and infrastructure blocks.
