To lose warmonger status in Civilization V, stop declaring wars and capturing cities, then let your Warmonger Amount decay; liberating a city or city-state captured by another civilization can reduce it faster. There is no single status shared by every opponent: in Brave New World, the score and reaction are calculated separately for each leader.
What warmonger status means in Civ 5
Warmonger status is the diplomatic effect of accumulated aggression, not a switch that peace negotiations instantly turn off. The community-maintained Civilization Wiki’s warmongering mechanics reference describes actions such as declaring war and capturing cities as contributors to a Warmonger Amount. In Brave New World, that amount is applied to civilizations you have met and adjusted into a separate Warmonger Score for each leader. One leader may therefore regard you as a greater threat than another.

The interface and rules depend on your edition. Vanilla Civilization V and Gods & Kings use a penalty when a leader-specific tolerance threshold is exceeded. Brave New World has named threat levels and more intricate scoring. Do not treat a visible label or number from one edition as a universal threshold for all versions.
How to lower your warmonger score
1. Stop adding aggression
Avoid further declarations of war and city captures while you want the accumulated amount to fall. The official Civilization V manual describes declaring war and negotiating peace as distinct diplomacy actions; it does not say that peace itself erases warmonger points.
#1 Best Overall
- Successful diplomacy will depend on players carefully managing relationships with other leaders
- Expanded visuals and immersive audio invite would-be kings to take up the reigns of power and forge a mighty empire
- An intuitive interface eases both new players and Civ veterans into the game
2. Let turns pass
The Civilization Wiki reports natural decay of 5 Warmonger Amount points per turn. This is a community-documented, version-sensitive game mechanic, not a guaranteed rate for every edition or patch. Decay reduces the amount; each leader’s score and response still depend on that leader’s modifier.
3. Liberate a captured city or city-state
If another civilization captured a city or city-state and you later liberate it, the reference says the corresponding warmonger calculation is reversed, reducing your score. This can be a more direct reduction than waiting for decay, but liberation is a strategic military decision, not a free diplomacy action. Consider whether you can afford to give up the city and whether doing so makes sense for your position.
Rank #2
- ENDLESS REPLAYABILITY: Play as one of 43 historical leaders and wage war by land, sea, and air, conduct diplomacy & espionage, establish religious beliefs, and discover new technologies in your quest to build the most powerful empire the world has ever known.
- HUGE BATTLES: Wars between empires spread across land and sea. Ranged bombardment challenges you to develop clever strategies to guarantee victory on the battlefield.
- DIPLOMACY: Negotiate with some of history’s most cunning rulers, each with a well-crafted plan for victory. City-states present a diplomatic battleground on which the major powers of the world will vie for supremacy.
- RELIGION: Cultivate Great Prophets and create a religion you can customize and enhance.
- ESPIONAGE: Send your spies into foreign cities for surveillance, to steal advanced technologies from your competitors, or to interfere with city-state alliances.
4. Check the specific leader and edition
Check which opponent’s attitude you are evaluating and whether you are playing vanilla, Gods & Kings, or Brave New World. The latter’s per-leader score means that one opponent’s reaction does not tell you exactly how every other leader sees you.
How long does warmonger status last?
There is no fixed number of turns that applies to every player or opponent: the remaining amount depends on how much aggression you accumulated, and reactions are leader-specific. For Brave New World, the community reference’s reported decay rate of 5 points per turn gives a rough way to think about passive reduction, but it is not a reliable countdown to a particular leader changing attitude. The reference also reports that new warmonger points are scaled by era: 50% in Ancient, 60% Classical, 70% Medieval, 80% Renaissance, 90% Industrial, and 100% in later eras. These are version-sensitive mechanics figures, and the page notes an era-dependence change in a patch dated 27 October 2014.
Rank #3
- Biggest revamp in Civilization's history improves everything from graphics to artificial intelligence, with a game that's easier to play than ever
- Major interface changes make a more believable game world and easier game to navigate, with hex-based movement and naturally growing city borders
- All-new battle system makes combat quicker and more tactical than ever before. Cities can now attack units directly and weight of numbers is no longer guarantee of victory
Brave New World threat levels and reported values
The following figures are reported by the undated, community-maintained Civilization Wiki mechanics page for Brave New World. They are in-game reference values, not official-manual figures, and may vary with edition or patch.
| Mechanic | Reported value |
|---|---|
| Threat bands | None: 0–19; Minor: 20–49; Major: 50–99; Severe: 100–199; Critical: 200+ Warmonger Score |
| Declaration of war | 250 Warmonger Amount |
| Denunciation | 35 Warmonger Amount |
| Natural decay | 5 Warmonger Amount points per turn |
| Era modifier for new warmonger points | Ancient 50%; Classical 60%; Medieval 70%; Renaissance 80%; Industrial 90%; later eras 100% |
These values should not be read as a universal “status disappears at X” formula. The threat bands refer to Warmonger Score, while decay and the listed actions affect Warmonger Amount; leaders’ modifiers connect the two.
Rank #4
- EXPANSIVE EMPIRES: See the marvels of your empire spread across the map like never before.
- ACTIVE RESEARCH: Unlock boosts that speed your civilization's progress through history.
- DYNAMIC DIPLOMACY: Interactions with other civilizations change over the course of the game.
- COMBINED ARMS: Expanding on the “one unit per tile” design, support units can now be embedded with other units.
Does making peace remove warmonger status?
Do not rely on signing peace as an instant reset. The official manual covers peace negotiations as a diplomacy option, while the mechanics reference identifies natural decay and liberation as ways the amount falls. The manual does not publish the hidden warmonger formula or confirm that peace clears an existing score. The digital manual is listed by Civilization’s official support site; that listing establishes manual availability, not additional scoring rules.
